Second stupid Google+ question of the day, having been here for two years now: how can I restrict my search to circles? For example, the search events in san francisco from web builders would instantly fill the gap left by Plancast / Upcoming for me.

I think there's still a place for great open source social networking platforms that people can build on top of. That's why I've been building #Idno  - it's an attempt to create something that works on any device with a web browser, but that can be used as the basis of any web community. You can install it on your own servers, or there will be an easy, turnkey service, just like there used to be with #Elgg.

It's come along well this year. It doesn't have an installer yet, but if you've got the time and inclination, you can grab the latest code from the GitHub repository. All you need is PHP 5.4+, Apache, and MongoDB. Think of it as a modern take on the LAMP stack - I'm using MongoDB for a reason, and have thought very carefully about it. We'll probably add Postgres support later on, though.

"I'm not mourning XMPP, I'm mourning [..] working-togetherness."

It's been hard to wrap my head about Google dropping XMPP and find the right words about why I think this is sad and (at least for me!) a pivot in terms of what Google is.

Let's start from the beginning. The thing I love about Google is that it's a company built around engineering. A company that proved that once you built an amazing technical solution and made the world better, then, yes, it will collect vast amounts of profits. I barely remember the early days of Google, but I remember that, at first, Google did not care much about "business" decisions. They only worked on making the very best web crawler and indexing algorithms in the world. Once they were there, with a dominating (yet still growing) market share, they introduce adwords and they became the hugely successful company we all know.

In other words:
1) solve the problem
2) conquer the world
3) make profits

I believe it has been the same for a lot of other very successful Google products, like Youtube, or Gmail, or Android... etc. Of course, I also believe this is still the case for some current projects inside Google, like Chrome OS, Google Glass, Google Fiber, or even the space lift (!).

A couple years ago though, Google realized they were missing the "social" wave. This had obvious consequences for the data they index and organize: people are pretty good at signaling what's worth finding. The problem at the time (and still today!) is that this "social" web is silo'ed: the data is not visible outside of the social networks.

And that's where i believe Google changed: rather than fixing this problem, Google decided to reject the world as it was and created their alternate reality. Rather than fixing (or at least trying!) the problem, Google decided to avoid the problem by putting the web into Google, rather than Google in the web. This is probably a good 'business' decision, but it also lead to some kind of schizophrenia as it looks more and more that Google thinks that it's the web, and that anything outside of Google is not worth interacting with, or cooperating with.

This brings me to my XMPP point. I don't care that Google abandons XMPP. This is a technical solution. Of course it's far from being even a good solution: it's a weird protocol, it uses XML... but it solved the "let's chat together on the web" problem quite well. Removing it and replacing it by something that has HD video, audio, works on mobile or even spills money does not matter if it's only a "let"s chat together on google".

I'm not mourning XMPP, I'm mourning federation, interoperability, working-togetherness.

What's even more striking to me, is that Google is the single most web company on the web which depends on the web still being interoperable, federated and 'computer-accessible'. How will they index content if slowly every website moves into the same direction? What if Wikipedia suddenly becomes inaccessible to Google Bot because they decided to image only content, because they can render it better?

I am writing this here because I know that's the only thing a lot of Googlers now read. I won't blame them as I know they're frustrated their bots can't access the data inside Facebook or Twitter... but I'll blame Google because, rather than fixing a complex problem, decided to create one they alone can fix.___"I'm not mourning XMPP, I'm mourning [..] working-togetherness."

Second stupid Google+ question of the day, having been here for two years now: how can I restrict my search to circles? For example, the search events in san francisco from web builders would instantly fill the gap left by Plancast / Upcoming for me.

I've been describing open, ownership-aware software as "respectful software" for a while. Here's my attempt to define that.
