Benjamin Wimmer3,010Back in 1983 the ZX Spectrum classic *Manic Miner* by _Matthew Smith_ was released. 30 years later, it's the game to be played in the 4th _Retro Gamers Challenge_. h/t to @106168709712720711347 for picking this gem. While the targeted platform is ZX Spectrum, feel free to play it on whatever hardware you want and submit your score. As before, the event-feature is misused to define a deadline, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are welcomed - right away till Sun, Mar 10 (7:00 PM, CET). How to participate in this challenge: ○ Fire up your copy of _Manic Miner_ ○ Grab all the items ○ Jump over all the enemies ○ Clear as many levels as you can ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Repeat Lastly, although it's an event of the _Retro Gamers Community_ (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe), sharing it with other gamers out there is of course welcomed. Past challenges #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLi  #2: Chuckie Egg (Amstrad CPC) goo.gl/Yqwcl  #3: Time Bandit (Tandy CoCo) goo.gl/3E6pDRetro Gamers Challenge #4: Manic Miner2013-03-10 19:00:0015
Ghostbusters @ Gartenbaukino.at2013-02-21 20:30:002
Benjamin Wimmer3,010With all the snow and ice outside, why not stay inside and join *Retro Gamers Challenge #3*? This time, it was +John Hattan who had the honor to select a game and he came up with the legendary TRS-80 CoCo classic *Time Bandit* (trs-80.org/time-bandit). As before, the event-feature is misused to define a _deadline_, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are welcomed - right away till *Sun, Feb 3 (7:00 PM, CET)*. How to participate in this challenge: ○ Open the CoCo Java Emulator available at haplessgenius.com/mocha/ ○ Click "Setup" > Tab "Bin" and chose the program "Time Bandit" ○ Press "K" to start a new game ○ Arrow keys to move and Space to fire ○ Shoot enemies, steal treasures, collect keys, jump into the teleport fields and clear as many worlds as possible ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Repeat You can of course also play on your original hardware or any other emulator. Regarding other ports (e.g. for _Amiga_ or _Atari ST_): these ports differ in various aspects, so while I look forward to see screenshots and scores of these versions as well, mixing these and the CoCo won't really be possible. Depending on the number of submissions, there is however a chance to compose a second highscore table :-) Lastly, although it's an event of the Retro Gamers Community (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe) it is defined as a public event, therefore feel free to share and to invite other gamers. _Past challenges_ #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLi  #2: Chuckie Egg (Amstrad CPC) goo.gl/Yqwcl Retro Gamers Challenge #3: Time Bandit2013-02-03 19:00:0010
Benjamin Wimmer3,010There’s nothing better than starting a new year with a little challenge, right? The game to be played for the *Second Retro Gamers Challenge* was picked by +Jamie Gunn and he opted for *Chuckie Egg* on the _Amstrad CPC_. While the various ports do differ slightly, I would say that all platforms are welcomed although try to go for the _Amstrad CPC_ one if possible. Again, this event is misused to define a *deadline*, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are possible - right away *till Sun, Jan 13 (7:00 PM, CET)*. How to participate in this challenge: ○ Setup your gear (original hardware or emulator) ○ Start a fresh game (Difficulty level 3 on C64) ○ No cheating (cheat codes, use of save-stats) ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Play again ;-) Lastly, although it's an event of the *Retro Gamers Community* (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe) it is defined as a _public_ event, therefore feel free to share and to invite other gamers. _Past challenges_ #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLiRetro Gamers Challenge #2: Chuckie Egg2013-01-13 19:00:0011

Robert Misner2,172Hey folks, this is a bit of a circle share put together through +Michelle Marie's post today for "give me interesting people to circle."I don't normally do circle shares but I was going through it and adding a few people here or there, and figured I might as well just grab everybody - people were recommending loads of people I already have circled and find interesting.Upon putting it together as it's own circle it looks really good. Just give it a try and pull some people out of it. And if you're not going to grab the whole thing, at least grab:+Sarah Rios +Bliss Morgan +Halfdan Reschat +Linda Lawrey and of course +Michelle Marie herselfThese folks all have "lively" streams loaded with active comment threads. Max Huijgen8,441Europe calling: the old giant wakes up and calls on its peeps!now that Europe shows up as the largest continent on G+ self awareness goes up and initiatives to get together flourish. It all started this Monday with my request to post your country if you were European. I offered to circle the first 500 who would do so without any obligation to circle back. Result: we needed a part2 as we hit the 500 comments limit. The original post was shared 225 times. You can find it here:https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/CdhmHGbYjgiPart 2 is still open and can be found here:https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/NDAhG4fP2a7If you didn´t do so already, post there and as long as I have spots free, I will circle you as I want to see my streams come alive during European hours. There was a shared feeling that it would be great to get some attention from G+ for Europe with official hangouts from the community managers during European times, feature roll-outs from Google no longer restricted to the US, having some central point to share European circles and last but not least the desire to have hangouts without having to burn the midnight oil. To help solve this and get Europeans together on the same page I created +Europeans on G+ It already has three managers out of the community but feel to offer a bit of your time as it must be a community project. Circle the page if you didn´t already do so. The first post can be found here:https://plus.google.com/100160648652252546872/posts/QXAJ1DFma68The community of Europeans responded and we got the following new initiatives:An compilation of the who is who in the EU countries:The Euro 200 Circle by +Euro Maestro Who are the most followed in Europe ? Who have the highest Klout score ? This circle helps to answer those questions. This is sort of a Who's Who list of Europe.https://plus.google.com/107040353898400532534/posts/YPv8bzRwYXDNext the even more exclusive circle of the most followed Europeans from all over Europe as compiled by me thanks to assistance of +CircleCount the best profiler site there is and they happen to be European as well :) The Euro Top 50 Circle: Europeans with the largest follower countNo pages, just people based in geographic Europe who were already famous or got their followers through relentless efforts on G+ https://plus.google.com/112352920206354603958/posts/QUEP9UT9iVTAn attempt to crowd source the most valuable Europeans on and for G+ by +Gabriel Vasile MAKING A "BEST OF EUROPEANS" GOOGLE+ CIRCLEYou can still cast your votes there.https://pl2012-01-26 20:15:085009912179

Last time, I shared a link about how Nintendo's password system for Punch Out!! on NES worked (goo.gl/MGSV5X).
This time, it's all about cameras in side-scrollers.

Here's +Itay Keren's detailed research about the pros and cons of the various scrolling concepts that had been implemented over the last decades starting all the way back in the early 80s:

docs.google.com/document/d/1iNSQIyNpVGHeak6isbP6AHdHD50gs8MNXF1GCf08efg/pub

Definitely an interesting read even for non-programmers but gaming enthusiasts like me :-)

Great, now I've got the Clerks soundtrack stuck in my head.
All of it. For the rest of the week. On repeat.
Which I am actually OK with.

I'm gonna pick up a big box tomorrow containing:
○ 12 games
○ on 4 CDs
○ with a 370 pages manual
○ and 3 code wheels

A compilation that I've owned before but somehow have lost when moving the first time back in '99.

And I'm done with Broken Age.

I enjoyed the first act (goo.gl/UqEJIT) but honestly, the second just didn't deliver. The first half an hour was fun although it was exclusively dialogue (started with Shane) the rest was quite a mess. Including puzzles where you need to take notes is OK, but repeating one and the same mechanic over and over again isn't. Also, it didn't really make any sense story wise as ...

[SPOILER ALERT!]

... Shay and Vella don't really communicate with each other, so there's no way of them knowing how to wire those bots. Also, it really was a let down, that there wasn't a third act with both working together.

That's either an UFO landing behind the house next door or the technical rehearsal for the Vienna Philharmonic's Summer Night Concert at Schönbrunn this Thursday.

PS: Excuse the poor picture quality, it's 9:45 PM and I'm way too lazy for searching my DSLR.

Stopped by a #comicbook  store today for searching new reading material and that's what I ended up with:

Locke & Key I quite enjoyed this series so far but with the waiting time between the fifth and this sixth TPB being over two years(!) its release last October did slip by completely.
Before Watchmen Another case of a TPB hard to come by with it being available in hardcover only for a frikkin' year before the paperback edition came out. Same as above, it disappeared completely from my radar until today and no, there's absolutely no memory of me having read any reviews of it whatsoever left, so I'm actually glad I forgot about it as in I will be reading it without having all the hype around it behind my back.

The Goon Now, a complete new series for me and all I know is, that there has been a Kickstarter for a Goon movie and that's it. Only had a quick flip through the first TPB a minute ago but I think I'll like it :-)___

Fooling around with 320x200 screenshots for correcting aspect ratio and adding a minor CRT effect. I'm not really sure if the latter is worth the trouble, huh?

Steps:
* Capture screenshot in original resolution 320x200
* Upscaling to 1600x1200 for pixel perfect 4:3 correction

Additional steps for the – IMHO rather subtile – CRT effect
* Adding scanlines
* Adding bulge effect

Big Box Update

There are three new boxes on my shelves:

Bad Mojo: Ready for a strange game? Well, in this one you're a cockroach crawling around in dirt and through sewage pipes solving riddles. And it's worth playing. For an easier installation, go for the Redux version available over at e.g. gog.com

It's an adventure mixed with RPG elements as well as labyrinths and riddles. I was on the hunt for this game for months and even though it sells for triple figures when it pops up on eBay. Grim Fandango With Broken Age being quite a disappointment, I'm very happy having gotten my hands on one of Schäfer's older titles and having only paid a tenner for it \o/

The first Katakis (C64, disk version) that I've spotted on eBay. It's not the boxed version like the one I have but still.
Let's see how far up the bids will go; as of now it's at €40 with 2 hours left.

Update €71? I was sure it would go triple figure.

OK, I give up.
It's time to sit down and finally watch Star Wars sometime later tonight BUT I'm the one ruling over which version to choose:
The latest special version by Lucas? Nope.
The despecialized one? Nope.

But what else is out there?
The funky one. By njvc (goo.gl/nKHSwB)

Edit: Oh, that's actually Empire Strikes Back but who cares ;-)

Last time, I shared a link about how Nintendo's password system for Punch Out!! on NES worked (goo.gl/MGSV5X).
This time, it's all about cameras in side-scrollers.

Here's +Itay Keren's detailed research about the pros and cons of the various scrolling concepts that had been implemented over the last decades starting all the way back in the early 80s:

Definitely an interesting read even for non-programmers but gaming enthusiasts like me :-)

OK, folks, here's what I've come up with in regard of Collections: color coded slices of my (public) on-/offline life.

I have to admit the temptation of creating overly defined sub-streams was there but after starting to think in old school blog categories the so far defined eight collections are IMHO more than enough for a) me, streamlining my posts and b) you, for ticking off stuff you don't wanna see anymore.
Also, by wading through and moving around my posts of 2015 those categories did hold up very well, proofing that I can't be that far off with them.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Questions?

Playing: Clive Barker's Undying

I've finally found some spare minutes to sit down and wade through my screenshots taken nearly a month ago (goo.gl/k5fRX).
Being a big fan of Clive Barker's books and movies, it was a no-brainer to jump into this game when it was released back in 2001. By using the same engine that powered Unreal (see goo.gl/ULLW2), visuals as well as directional sound FX were and still are very impressive. Thanks to .ini tweaks the game can be played full screen at any resolution and available texture packs enhance it even further (see links below).

Anyway.

The game is one of the most atmospheric FPS I've played so far with a well-thought-out level design guiding you through the world. The character design is great – well, it is Clive Barker we're talking about – and the scenery is spooky as hell. Or hellishly spooky. Or terrifying and unsettling.

While the gameplay mechanics are rather basic with keys and items to collect as well as armory and spell book to power up over time as seen in hundreds of other FPS before, it's the game's setting and atmosphere that pushes it above average. In short: Play it if you dare ;-)

Playing: American McGee’s Alice

Jep, his name is indeed American McGee and jep, you might have seen his name in the credits of Doom II, Ultimate Doom and Quake as he worked at id Software back in the 90s but let’s get to the point here: his opus magnum Alice

Using the advanced and potent Quake III engine, McGee and his team recreated the the famous Wonderland including all beloved characters from the White Rabbit over the Queen of Hearts to the Cheshire Cat but not as we all know it, but in a more darker and twisted way. The story is set ten years after Through the looking Glass and our heroine has spent those years institutionalized in an asylum. Why? Well, her parents’ house burnt down by accident killing her family and leaving her all alone with a trauma that she couldn’t handle. The game starts with her being called back to Wonderland by her stuffed rabbit (see the intro in the gallery).

Although offering a third person view and being focused around wayfinding and killing enemies, the game isn’t really a classical action adventure like Tomb Raider but somewhat different by using artistic level designs and changes of common gameplay mechanics for creating novel puzzle rooms. Further, the well designed and very detailed world adds a lot to the level of immersion, so wandering through Wonderland itself becomes a key aspect of the overall experience; I don’t wanna spoil anything here, but standing in a room breaking apart or being forced to move like a churchman (being cryptic on purpose here) are IMHO a welcomed change.

As always, lots of screenshots of the first hour of the game in the gallery below. While I tried to avoid any spoilers, starting the game right away would be the better option, especially as it’s a definite recommendation. XBox and PS3 gamers should find it in the online shops, while PC gamers have to find a used copy via eBay as it’s no longer offered via EA’s Origin store.___Reshare due to moving posts from a (deleted) community isn't possible.

Playing: Nebulus

Sure, there was Zaxxon with its isometric view and Elite with its wireframe gfx and the various Freescape games with their fancy but slow first person renderings but for me it was Nebulus that awed me the most with its stunning pseudo 3D gfx that I thought wouldn't be possible on a humble C64. Even today, 26 years later, I'm mesmerized how smoothly the towers rotate and how perfect the 3D illusion is.

The game was developed by John M. Phillips and published by Hewson in 1987 and features one of the cutest character sprites ever. The gameplay is also fantastic: eight towers need to be destroyed and to do so, we have to climb them while avoiding enemies and traps. The 2D platforming is enriched by doorways allowing to pass through the tower to the other side of it. Further, there are disappearing floor tiles as well as elevators and slippery stones.

Last but not least, the single towers are connected by short shoot'em up sequences with – again – a stunning graphical effect: multi-parallax scrolling.

Below, the gallery collects screenshots – using the micro64 emulator – of the first 2½ towers but due to the visual design of the game, I highly recommend to go and play it yourself. If you own a Wii or WiiU, you can download the C64 version of the game via the Wii Shop Channel (Here's a review: goo.gl/L4tbr)

Bonus trivia: John Romero was hired for porting the game from C64 to Apple II but it was never released (see planetromero.com/games)___Reshare due to moving posts from a (deleted) community isn't possible.

Will this be useful for you?
edit still trying to figure out that thing / how to use it properly. If I understand that correctly Collections are a way to organize all your posts so that your followers can only follow certain topics? Right? Sounds actually really useful. So I guess the right way to use it would be to put nearly everything in Collections (like say - Android, Chrome (OS), Linux, nerd culture - whatever)? Or am I getting this wrong?___Look what we've got here: Collections!

Be on the lookout for an email from Humble Bundle with special instructions for getting the game early on Steam. Then play Broken Age! Your old save game will work, but I personally recommend starting over from the beginning. Now, now, no grumbling. You don't HAVE to. I can't force you. YET. But you really should, and after all, it won't take you long since you know all the puzzles. :) There are just so many hints and story set ups that happen in Act 1 that you need to remember for Act 2 to make sense. Plus, achievements! Anyway, whatevs. You don't have to start over. That's just my recommendation. I'm like that waiter that tells you how to eat your food. Aaaahhh... well... I don't know... meh... nah... nope... I don't think so... don't want to, actually. I don't even find motivation for reading a recap of part one as a matter of fact. Or digging up a summary on YouTube. I'll just jump right into it and if it doesn't work out story-wise, let's blame the developers for making us me wait that long. I know, this (youtu.be/DIIIpOZX4ck) and that (goo.gl/dmh10J) but then again, it wasn't me who set the deadline and scope and extras and everything.

Video game collector moment

I've shared my collection of Last Ninja games before (goo.gl/3lg984) but due to having doubled the number of games since 2013 I sat down and shot another series of photos.
While I thought of never ever coming across of a) the European disk version of Last Ninja, b) the boxed US version of Ninja 2 and c) a copy of Ninja Remix (jup, I know, it's not the cartridge but the tape version, but who's looking that closely, eh?), well I did came across all of them with monitoring the usual trading/selling sources over the last two years. Patience is everything, I guess.

Below, photos and scans of the boxes as well as the included posters. The latter can be found in high-res on my GDrive over here: goo.gl/An9ZoM

Enjoy :-)

Nice write-up about aspect ratios and why capturing screenshots isn't always that easy.
For C64, I'm all in for using micro64.de with its fantastic filters and CRT/TV FX giving me screenshots in 1440 x 1040 inkl. borders and 1200 x 800 for screenshots with most of the borders removed, see c64screenshots.com/titles.
For MS-DOS games, I actually don't know. After going through my +Playing... albums, most of it is either in high-res via options/hacks or in 640 x 480 which is correct 4:3 aspect ratio. The only one with a lower resolution is Gobliiins (goo.gl/dNhOFe) and here I went for the wrong 320 x 200. I hope, I'll remember this article next time and scale them up either to a) 1600 x 1200 or b) first up to 640 x 1200 and then back down to 640 x 480.

Big Box Update

Well, I haven't really found the time lately for sharing all the additions to my big box collection, so here's a rather big update:

The Last Ninja Jup, I think this post here (goo.gl/3lg984) needs an update because all six(!) boxes are sitting on my shelf meanwhile.
Alone in the Dark 2 Another classic trilogy ready to be put in the spotlight as a #BenjaminsGameCollectingMoment Before you comment, yes, there's more installments but who cares about The New Nightmare and the 2008 reboot?
SimCity IMHO, the first SimCity was the best, especially when played in the Enhanced Edition. With SimCity 2000 sitting right next to it, I'd say I've covered all the relevant installments of the series, right?

Blair Witch Trilogy Boy, three trilogies within one post? That's crazy! Anyway, the games fit in as they followed in AitD's footsteps and well, I did fall for the two movies big time. The controls are a bit wonky and there's of course a couple of really bad camera angles but all in all, having them in their big box editions on my shelf does look fantastic; they were a steal too, see goo.gl/eOlLlt
Might & Magic I and Might & Magic II: Jup, big boxes. Jup, complete and in mint condition. Jup, payed only $10 each. And jup, those are for Apple ][ and not PC or C64 but who's that picky? Also, only two more boxes (goo.gl/trQA4U) and the complete series is mine! Muahhaha!
Down in the Dumps One can't have enough point-and-click adventures, right? Even if it's a dated-looking 'cause pre-rendered one like this one. I'll report back if I can get it to install/run.
Return to Krondor I've got no clue whatsoever what this game – or the Krondor series actually – is all about. Got it for a couple of Euro and the cover looked nice. Has anybody played it or it's previous installments?

I'm thinking of spicing up my stream – stealing borrowing +John Lewis' idea to uncover new faces here on G+ does look like a working approach, so let's give it a go, shall we?

Rules are the same as stated below.

Social experiment.

1. Without effort (impulsively), quickly scan your circles for the coolest person you follow who has less followers than you
2 Plus them into this thread without further comment

Comments that don't follow the rules will be deleted... later.___I'm thinking of spicing up my stream – stealing borrowing +John Lewis' idea to uncover new faces here on G+ does look like a working approach, so let's give it a go, shall we?
