Benjamin Wimmer3,022Back in 1983 the ZX Spectrum classic *Manic Miner* by _Matthew Smith_ was released. 30 years later, it's the game to be played in the 4th _Retro Gamers Challenge_. h/t to @106168709712720711347 for picking this gem. While the targeted platform is ZX Spectrum, feel free to play it on whatever hardware you want and submit your score. As before, the event-feature is misused to define a deadline, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are welcomed - right away till Sun, Mar 10 (7:00 PM, CET). How to participate in this challenge: ○ Fire up your copy of _Manic Miner_ ○ Grab all the items ○ Jump over all the enemies ○ Clear as many levels as you can ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Repeat Lastly, although it's an event of the _Retro Gamers Community_ (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe), sharing it with other gamers out there is of course welcomed. Past challenges #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLi  #2: Chuckie Egg (Amstrad CPC) goo.gl/Yqwcl  #3: Time Bandit (Tandy CoCo) goo.gl/3E6pDRetro Gamers Challenge #4: Manic Miner2013-03-10 19:00:0015
Ghostbusters @ Gartenbaukino.at2013-02-21 20:30:002
Benjamin Wimmer3,022With all the snow and ice outside, why not stay inside and join *Retro Gamers Challenge #3*? This time, it was +John Hattan who had the honor to select a game and he came up with the legendary TRS-80 CoCo classic *Time Bandit* (trs-80.org/time-bandit). As before, the event-feature is misused to define a _deadline_, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are welcomed - right away till *Sun, Feb 3 (7:00 PM, CET)*. How to participate in this challenge: ○ Open the CoCo Java Emulator available at haplessgenius.com/mocha/ ○ Click "Setup" > Tab "Bin" and chose the program "Time Bandit" ○ Press "K" to start a new game ○ Arrow keys to move and Space to fire ○ Shoot enemies, steal treasures, collect keys, jump into the teleport fields and clear as many worlds as possible ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Repeat You can of course also play on your original hardware or any other emulator. Regarding other ports (e.g. for _Amiga_ or _Atari ST_): these ports differ in various aspects, so while I look forward to see screenshots and scores of these versions as well, mixing these and the CoCo won't really be possible. Depending on the number of submissions, there is however a chance to compose a second highscore table :-) Lastly, although it's an event of the Retro Gamers Community (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe) it is defined as a public event, therefore feel free to share and to invite other gamers. _Past challenges_ #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLi  #2: Chuckie Egg (Amstrad CPC) goo.gl/Yqwcl Retro Gamers Challenge #3: Time Bandit2013-02-03 19:00:0010
Benjamin Wimmer3,022There’s nothing better than starting a new year with a little challenge, right? The game to be played for the *Second Retro Gamers Challenge* was picked by +Jamie Gunn and he opted for *Chuckie Egg* on the _Amstrad CPC_. While the various ports do differ slightly, I would say that all platforms are welcomed although try to go for the _Amstrad CPC_ one if possible. Again, this event is misused to define a *deadline*, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are possible - right away *till Sun, Jan 13 (7:00 PM, CET)*. How to participate in this challenge: ○ Setup your gear (original hardware or emulator) ○ Start a fresh game (Difficulty level 3 on C64) ○ No cheating (cheat codes, use of save-stats) ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Play again ;-) Lastly, although it's an event of the *Retro Gamers Community* (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe) it is defined as a _public_ event, therefore feel free to share and to invite other gamers. _Past challenges_ #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLiRetro Gamers Challenge #2: Chuckie Egg2013-01-13 19:00:0011

OK, Episode III was definitely better than the Episode II and my wife would even argue that it's the best out of the four Star Wars movies that we've watched so far. Me, I liked it although it started with another boring as hell chase sequence and ended with an a tiny bit too long light saber duel. Anakin's final transformation was top notch however.

Next up, Return of the Jedi which we can't wait to see :-)

Oh, wow!
Battlespire and Readguard are now available via gog.com.

Edit: Double WOW!
They've included high quality .pdf copies of Codex Scientia and Daggerfall Chronicles with TES: Arena and TES: Daggerfall.
Those books are very hard to get and are changing hands for >100$ for CS and >50$ for DC over at eBay.

PS: I love how my Portal to Hell photo has accumulated 80k so far.

Ok, folks, who's responsible for the 140k views I've got since yesterday?
Especially as I haven't been doing/posting/commenting/... anything the last couple of days and my notifications haven't exploded either?

Or is it a glitch, +CircleCount?

PS: It caught my eye as I've surpassed 4m total views

Ugh :-/
System 3 is thinking about a HD remake of Last Ninja [1]? Really?

You all know I'm a huge fan of the trilogy [2], but that's me loving the original games with all their faults and let's be honest here, they're far from perfect games. Keeping the games' mechanisms while upgrading GFX is IMHO pretty pointless, as there's no benefit in it; the games would still be flawed and - when compared to modern titles - very, very disappointing for new players.

Fixing the games' issues would look like the right way to go but when sticking to the originals' levels and puzzles – puzzles as in find the three hidden objects of each level – and would just show that there isn't much "game" to be found in the once revolutionary titles. Fighting one enemy after another with three different attacks does wear off quickly even with HDGFX... more »

Last but not least, let's remind ourselves that we're talking about System 3 here, a company who infamously weren't capable of getting the original Ninja 3 working correctly via emulation back in 2008 but sold it anyway [3].

Holy moly. My wife convinced me to get new headphones – which arrived today \o/ – and while I've been quite happy with the various (cheaper) AKG ones that I've been using so far, the sound quality of my new Bose Q25 (more on the pricy side as in frikkin' expensive) beats them all. Tenfold.

OK, folks, RotJ was a real downer and I'd guess that's completely independent of the order (release date, episode, or – like we did – Machete* order) you're watching the movies.

Frikkin' Ewoks all over the place and a main story being worth for an one hour TV movie tops.

All in all, it's 5>3>4>2>6 for me and yes, I know, You're wrong about that one!!! The original trilogy rulez! and all that but hey, it's just movies we're talking about here. And to not adding more fuel to the fire, I won't tell you that my wife's final ranking is in fact 3>5>4>2>6 :-p

Next up, The Force Awakens, on the silver screen later this year :-)

Me, I liked it although it started with another boring as hell chase sequence and ended with an a tiny bit too long light saber duel. Anakin's final transformation was top notch however.

I've added a lot of stuff and features to bigboxcollection.com over the last couple of days and I'm actually quite pleased with the result so far.
As of now, the before mentioned Box Fight mode is up and running which means results are saved and used for generating an overall ranking, so finding out which box art is the best is now only a matter of time :-)

We watched Episode II as the third movie in our Star Wars nights yesterday and it was not only the first time for both of us seeing it but it's also one that we did know absolutely nothing about.

Did we like it?
Aaaahhhmmmmm... the first minutes were quite a downer due to the overly long and therefore boring and stupid chase sequence at the beginning, but it then got more and more interesting... for about an hour... before it gets all ruined again with bad slapstick comedy, dull let's-drag-this-sequence-out-for-another-minute action scenes and really, really, really bad CGI.

All in all, it was OKish, but IMHO it would definitely benefit from being trimmed down to ~100min.

Next up: Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi

Hmmm... although Baldur's Gate is one of the best games ever made, its European big box is definitely one of the worst boxes ever made. Seriously.

Just look at this mess: bigboxcollection.com/#BaldursGate

The original box art (goo.gl/fXPkG3) was designed to look like a book, but here, the leather texture is gone and there's weird Word-Art-like texts all over it. Also, what's the deal with the character portraits? To make things worse, they are the same on the back, but mirrored.

Pffff...

PS: Check out Heretic for comparison of a book-like box: bigboxcollection.com/#Heretic

Wait a minute... Yoda is an offspring of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy? You know it's true if you close your eyes and listen to his voice. I would have thought Frank Oz could have done something more different than just merging his and Henson' Muppet voices.

Then again, maybe having watched the 2011 Muppets movie last week before jumping into the Star Wars saga wasn't the best idea.

Anyway, Pulp Empire is definitely the better version of Episode V.

PS: Obligatory Clerks link is obligatory https://youtu.be/dGOVbXF7Iog even though we've not seen Return of the Jedi yet

Nice article about how Lemmings came into existence. I also have to agree that the first one was just perfect which sadly reduced all the sequels and spin-offs to being just mediocre games.

Bonus content:
○ Box art: bigboxcollection.com/#Lemmings
○ A different take on the Lemmings' journey: goo.gl/PLNlxQ
○ DHTML Lemmings: elizium.nu/scripts/lemmings/
