Benjamin Wimmer3,014Back in 1983 the ZX Spectrum classic *Manic Miner* by _Matthew Smith_ was released. 30 years later, it's the game to be played in the 4th _Retro Gamers Challenge_. h/t to @106168709712720711347 for picking this gem. While the targeted platform is ZX Spectrum, feel free to play it on whatever hardware you want and submit your score. As before, the event-feature is misused to define a deadline, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are welcomed - right away till Sun, Mar 10 (7:00 PM, CET). How to participate in this challenge: ○ Fire up your copy of _Manic Miner_ ○ Grab all the items ○ Jump over all the enemies ○ Clear as many levels as you can ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Repeat Lastly, although it's an event of the _Retro Gamers Community_ (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe), sharing it with other gamers out there is of course welcomed. Past challenges #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLi  #2: Chuckie Egg (Amstrad CPC) goo.gl/Yqwcl  #3: Time Bandit (Tandy CoCo) goo.gl/3E6pDRetro Gamers Challenge #4: Manic Miner2013-03-10 19:00:0015
Ghostbusters @ Gartenbaukino.at2013-02-21 20:30:002
Benjamin Wimmer3,014With all the snow and ice outside, why not stay inside and join *Retro Gamers Challenge #3*? This time, it was +John Hattan who had the honor to select a game and he came up with the legendary TRS-80 CoCo classic *Time Bandit* (trs-80.org/time-bandit). As before, the event-feature is misused to define a _deadline_, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are welcomed - right away till *Sun, Feb 3 (7:00 PM, CET)*. How to participate in this challenge: ○ Open the CoCo Java Emulator available at haplessgenius.com/mocha/ ○ Click "Setup" > Tab "Bin" and chose the program "Time Bandit" ○ Press "K" to start a new game ○ Arrow keys to move and Space to fire ○ Shoot enemies, steal treasures, collect keys, jump into the teleport fields and clear as many worlds as possible ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Repeat You can of course also play on your original hardware or any other emulator. Regarding other ports (e.g. for _Amiga_ or _Atari ST_): these ports differ in various aspects, so while I look forward to see screenshots and scores of these versions as well, mixing these and the CoCo won't really be possible. Depending on the number of submissions, there is however a chance to compose a second highscore table :-) Lastly, although it's an event of the Retro Gamers Community (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe) it is defined as a public event, therefore feel free to share and to invite other gamers. _Past challenges_ #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLi  #2: Chuckie Egg (Amstrad CPC) goo.gl/Yqwcl Retro Gamers Challenge #3: Time Bandit2013-02-03 19:00:0010
Benjamin Wimmer3,014There’s nothing better than starting a new year with a little challenge, right? The game to be played for the *Second Retro Gamers Challenge* was picked by +Jamie Gunn and he opted for *Chuckie Egg* on the _Amstrad CPC_. While the various ports do differ slightly, I would say that all platforms are welcomed although try to go for the _Amstrad CPC_ one if possible. Again, this event is misused to define a *deadline*, so you can start posting your scores - yes, multiple submissions are possible - right away *till Sun, Jan 13 (7:00 PM, CET)*. How to participate in this challenge: ○ Setup your gear (original hardware or emulator) ○ Start a fresh game (Difficulty level 3 on C64) ○ No cheating (cheat codes, use of save-stats) ○ Take a photo/snapshot of your score ○ Share your scores with this event ○ Play again ;-) Lastly, although it's an event of the *Retro Gamers Community* (you can join us here: goo.gl/ttIOe) it is defined as a _public_ event, therefore feel free to share and to invite other gamers. _Past challenges_ #1: Tetris (GameBoy) goo.gl/FGTLiRetro Gamers Challenge #2: Chuckie Egg2013-01-13 19:00:0011

Visiting Barcelona (2011)

I blame the new Google Photos for me sitting here digging and sorting through old, not yet shared albums. Below, a couple of photos taken on our trip to Barcelona in March 2011.

It's of course full of Gaudí: Sagrada Família (which I failed big time capturing its lighting on photos), La Pedrera, Parc Güell, Palau Güell and Casa Batlló. Each a stunning piece of architecture on their own and definitely mind blowing when having seen it all within 72 hours.

Wait a minute... Yoda is an offspring of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy? You know it's true if you close your eyes and listen to his voice. I would have thought Frank Oz could have done something more different than just merging his and Henson' Muppet voices.

Then again, maybe having watched the 2011 Muppets movie last week before jumping into the Star Wars saga wasn't the best idea.

Anyway, Pulp Empire is definitely the better version of Episode V.

PS: Obligatory Clerks link is obligatory https://youtu.be/dGOVbXF7Iog even though we've not seen Return of the Jedi yet

Nice article about how Lemmings came into existence. I also have to agree that the first one was just perfect which sadly reduced all the sequels and spin-offs to being just mediocre games.

Remastered games are quite common these days, but how about remastering a game from '86? And how about sticking to the same platform it was first released on?

Thanks to Nostalgia (nostalgia.c64.org/) these kind of remasters do happen too \o/

Chris Butler's classic Ghost'n Goblins for C64 just got the following improvements:

- Two completely new levels added.Level 6 has an additional final room.
- Existing 4 levels are expanded to be twice the size of the original.
- All levels have completely new graphics and level designs applied.
- All levels have unique new tunes added which were newly composed.
- New Sound Effects added or changed.
- New sprite multiplexer coded, which will minimize glitches.
- Intro sequence added where Satan abducts the Princess.

- Game Map added, which shows your progress when you are killed or you reach incoming level.
- Game Complete animation added.
- Game Over sequence added.
- Two new Bosses added for levels 5 and 6. They are bigger than any existing enemies in the original game.
- Added a new Jumping Skeleton enemy in levels 5 and 6.
- Moving Clouds recoded so they can be used on level 5.
- Arthur now can turn around when he jumps and he can shoot backwards.
- Added an improved Title/Loading screen with new tune.
- Weapons are now improved and all of them now actually make sense.
- Enemies have improved AI - not perfect but much better than original.
- Levels 1-4 are done in 2 parts now, but transition between them is fully seamless.
- Flying Knights at level 2 can only be shot from behind as in Arcade.
- Zombies first dig out some dirt so you can spot them before they kill you.
- Collision detection is drastically improved - you won't get killed when a bullet flies over your head anymore.
- Dragon Boss covers more of the screen area now and you need to shoot his head three times, and he won't shoot so many bullets anymore.
- House Ogres are easier to kill now.
- 'Sparkles' are now visible when you hit an enemy.
- Weapons that are dropped depend on the level you are playing, so you cannot get the shield in the beginning.
- Pause Game and Quit Game added, which can be activated by Run/Stop key.
- Arthur can jump over obstacles now even if he touches them. In the original he only jumped up.
- Time limit is now different for each level.
- 7 Trainers added for your pleasure.

Oh boy, back to square one for a big chunk of my scanned/photographed big boxes.

When I first started out digitizing them, I used our DSLR camera due to not owning a scanner. Quality was secondary as I would have to reduce them in size anyway. White balance? Pffff... it's just for a quick, nerdy share on the web, so who cares, right?

Well, in fact, I do care. Now, years later, while working on bigboxcollection.com the rubbishness of my early scans/photos does show big-time. The solution? Back to scanner with me for capturing 90+ boxes once more but this time in high-res.

This also reminds me of John Carpenter's Dark Star from 1974 were all the pin-up posters visible in the background on the walls of the sleeping chambers had to be blurred out too :-)

American censorship is hysterical. The first two images and tons of other blood are unedited in #Hannibal online, but Primavera by Botticelli is blurred for nudity lol

Behold the power of stop-motion!

As you know, I no longer have to store my big box collection in moving boxes stored down in the cellar but finally have enough shelf space to properly put them on display. In regard of the virtual world though, it's all just simple scans, which kind of fall, well, flat and therefore needs to be improved.

Coincidentally, there's an urge to build something burning in me, so let's see what options we've got here:

○ building a light-box and snap photos instead of scanning
○ building a virtual shelf with 3D boxes (that might be interacted with)

Thoughts?

Update time!

OK, huge delay on my side as the ciders listed below have been bought back in January and I've somehow managed to postpone writing an update for month now. I'll blame moving for that.

Anyway, there's a quick rundown of the single ciders and an update of my ranking. Due to the delay, I've decided to buy another bottle/can of some of them, so consider their spot in the list as not set in stone yet.

Goldkelchen: Another Austrian cider and boy, it's good and with that, we've got a new entry in the Top 5 of my ranking!

Cornish Orchards Gold Cider Well, that's a solid cider I'd say, and in fact, that's all I can say due to my 4 month long delay of updating my ranking. I should revisit it another time to double-check; as of now, it's placed 14th.

Hornsby's Crisp Apple Cider An American cider? Not sure what I had expect here but it was good, like, real good. Again, with a 4-month delay of updating my ranking, I can't really give a precise verdict, and therefore I'm gonna revisit it with my next update, but as of now, it's scratching of entering my Top 10.

Cornish Orchards Farmhouse (still) Cider Nope, nope, nope. What was I thinking! A still cider? Really? Me, who loves bubbles? Two sips was all I could take and let's be honest here, there's no way I could add this one to my ranking or in other words: if you like sparkling ciders, do yourself a favor and avoid still ciders :-)

Carling British Cider Again, a cider that I'm gonna revisit in the next couple of days. I do remember though, that I really enjoyed this can of Carling British Cider. That said, another hit & miss ranking until I've drunken another can of it.

Cider (Hofer/Aldi) Cider has become more and more popular here in Austria the last couple of months and getting one at the local supermarket isn't impossible anymore. Bad thing is though that it's either the (really, really, really bad) continental Somersby or this who-needs-a-brand-anyway-let's-just-call-it-cider stuff sold at Hofer (aka Aldi).

Merrydown Medium Dry Cider I've had a Merrydown cider before and with 18th and 23rd place, they weren't really that well received. This medium dry one was however quite OK. That's a spot somewhere in the middle I'd say.

My ranking so far:
1: Olde English Medium Dry Cider
2: Westons Premium Cider
3: Aspall Crip Draught Suffolk Cyder
4: Bulmers Original
5: Goldkehlchen Cider
6: Stella Artois' Cidre
7: Westons Medium Dry Cider
8: Strongbow Original
9: Krahu!
10: Kopparberg: Apple
11: Hornsby's Crisp Apple Cider
12: Brothers Bittersweet Apple Cider
13: Thatchers Gold Somerset Cider
14: Cornish Orchards Gold Cider
15: Carling British Cider
16: Savanna Dry
17: Merrydown Medium Dry Cider
18: Carlsberg's Somersby (UK/IRE)
19: Merrydown Vintage Dry Cider
20: Blackthorn
21: Aspall Premier Cru Suffolk Cyder
22: Mont St. Michel Cidre Brut Dry
23: Woodpecker
24: Merrydown Vintage Medium Cider
25: Inch's: Stonehouse Strong & Dry Cider
26: Westons Wyld Wood Premium Organic Classic Cider
27: Bulmers/Magners Original Irish Cider
28: Cider frisch & spritzig (Hofer/Aldi)
29: Carlsberg's Somersby (Continental)
30: Kopparberg: Naked Apple
99: Westons Old Rosie Cloudy Cider___

5 times 320kpbs out of 6 when using my AKG K912 headphones with no real difference to hear but only trusting my gut here.

5 times WAV out of 6 and I only needed the first four or five seconds of each sample to get hear a real difference using our BOSE headphones.

Conclusio? IDK, lossless would of course be fantastic, but then again, I seldom sit still with eyes closed listening to music via headphones, so 320kbps is more than enough right now. I do cry out in pain when stumbling upon an ultra low quality '00s Napster era .mp3 hidden in my music collection.

Interesting Test... Can you spot the difference between MP3 (128 or 320 kbps) and lossless WAV?___5 times 320kpbs out of 6 when using my AKG K912 headphones with no real difference to hear but only trusting my gut here.

Conclusio? IDK, lossless would of course be fantastic, but then again, I seldom sit still with eyes closed listening to music via headphones, so 320kbps is more than enough right now. I do cry out in pain when stumbling upon an ultra low quality '00s Napster era .mp3 hidden in my music collection.

Big Box Update

A bunch of games have piled up ready to be put onto my shelf:

Forgotten Realms Archives: As pointed out before, I had this compilation already but have lost it when moving. Mainly gotten it for Eye of the Beholder and Hillsfar. Jep, that odd little AD&D game nobody liked when it came out back in 1989.

Star Trek: Judgment Rites: You all know I'm a big fan of Kirk & Co and it was only a matter of time for me jumping into a Star Trek TOS adventure game. I also know, a couple of you folks have very fond memories of this game, so I do hope, I soon find the time for giving it a spin.

The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall: What? Again? Jeez. There's not much to say, really, but Daggerfall is my favorite game. Ever. And I set out to get a copy of all different big box variants. This here, is the French onepubli... more »

The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall: What? Again? Jeez. There's not much to say, really, but Daggerfall is my favorite game. Ever. And I set out to get a copy of all different big box variants. This here, is the French one published by Ubi Soft.

The Elder Scrolls: Anthology: The scan is a bit blurry, but I have not yet decided if I'll open this box or not. The games included, well, I've got them all already and buying this compilation actually was more of an accident or - to be more precise - an offer too good to refuse.

Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon: The only Tex Murphy game I've ever played was Mean Streets on the humble C64 which means hours of loading between short gaming sequences; the digitized portraits were killer though. This one, I guess it's worth trying, diving into all the FMV slash interactive movie slash mature entertainment thingy that popped up in the late 90s.

Kleiner "Hack" um die Gesichtserkennung im neuen Google Fotos zu aktivieren.

Gesichtserkennung in Google Photos aktivieren, so geht's:

While pondering whether or not to open my sealed box of The Elder Scrolls Anthology I picked up the other day I came across this (complete) map of Daggerfall's game world.

Jup, each and every colored dot is a place that can be visited, may it be a long forgotten cemetery, a witch coven, a dungeon, village, town or city. Due to almost all of them having been randomly generated during development they are quite similar but nevertheless I'm still in awe about the sheer number of places hidden in this 19 years old game: according to Wikipedia the "gameworld [is] twice the size of Great Britain, filled with 15,000 towns and a population of 750,000."

Neat, huh?

Edit: Wow, image quality suffered big time due to Google compressing the uploaded file another time :-/

Ah... a kilogram of dead trees on my table :-)

Can't wait to start reading Scarlet Gospels and a new book by Gibson is worth checking out too. WASD is a great subway companion; it's a German bookazine collecting essays about various aspects of video game culture. The lates issue is all about love & hate (wasd-magazin.de) as far as I can see.

A collector's dilemma

Ugh! I hate to be the guy placing a bid only seconds before the eBay offer ends. Especially when there's only one other bidder and s/he went for the opening price of €1 without securing it with a maximum bid.

Yay! I love snagging a big box game I've been looking for some time now for €2 only. Especially when the game's box is in good condition and it's usually offered/sold for 10 times the money.

Visited my in-laws yesterday and letting them explore our new flat via Photospheres and +Google Cardboard was priceless.
All the spinning and bending and leaning in and giggling due to this being their first VR experience :-)

Now, that was definitely worth the $2.55 spent.
Best thing, we can already enjoy the view from our future balcony thanks to the magic of Cardboard [1] and Photospheres :-)
