Art through the Aperture Photography (Paula)12,300There are so many of us out here that have image issues and are our own worst critic.  I challenge you all to take a picture of a body part (and please keep it somewhat clean everyone) that you think is your best attribute.  Take a picture of your arms, hands, feet, knees, hips, etc. that make you feel beautiful.  If you think your whole body is beautiful that’s wonderful, just pick one part. I know you all are beautiful so get busy and shoot. You can do your shot in whatever style you want this is all about your depiction of your beauty, so try abstract, B&W, HDR, whatever tickles your fancy.  Mostly have fun and invite anyone you want.  Please add at your leisure up to the date and only one photograph please! Thank you @118149685580234696847  for so graciously letting me use your shots from last year for our banner.2nd Annual "You Are Beautiful"2015-02-22 04:00:00296
Bette Kauffman25,911And it won't be so cold in December, right? Well, regardless, +Bette Kauffman is coming to town--God willing and some nut doesn't set fire to the infrastructure again! So it's photowalk time. Calling all Chicago and vicinity photogs. Hope you can join me. We'll gather at the Bean for the obligatory group shot there, and I want to check out what has transpired with the construction that was underway in Millenium Park last time I was there. After that, I'm easy. We can go anywhere y'all are inspired to go, including back up to this beach where Tom and I were freezing our tushes back in March 2013.It really was cold that day....2014-12-20 17:00:002
Bette Kauffman25,911@115907986192399529711 is coming to Chicago! Will arrive some time Friday Sept. 26 and be ready for a photowalk Saturday. I have us meeting at The Bean, but if anyone has a better idea, I'm game. I'll be staying in Club Quarters Hotel in The Loop, but I'm comfortable using CTA to get about anywhere I want to go. If you can't join in until lunch time or after, we can make that work too. I'll have to head back to my hotel room by 4 p.m. to get ready for the opera. Y'all get this on your calendar, now!Chicago in September!2014-09-27 17:00:003
Bette Kauffman25,911Yes, Bette Kauffman is coming to Chicago! Opera Friday and Saturday evening, photowalk Saturday, home Sunday. Meet me at The Bean (Cloud Gate to the purists). If the weather cooperates, I plan to be out until about 4:30 p.m. If the weather is nasty (seems a real possibility this year), we'll head up to the conservatory and feast our lenses on orchids and such. Or go anywhere else protected from the elements y'all might suggest. I'm easy to please! Join me for all or part of the day. (Yes, that's @107400819855192601582 in the photo.)The Chicago-in-March photowalk is on!2014-03-08 17:00:007

American Lotus (Nelumbo lutea)

The lovely lotus waves her arms at us riding through the swamp in a flat-bottom boat. I love the slightly "wild woman" look of a fully open American Lotus, with it's huge yellow petals at all angles surrounding a regal golden urn that will become an attractive pod loved by florists everywhere.

Tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday and your opportunity to wax poetic about your fave wildflower! Or scientific. Or wordless. Whatever! I do enjoy the stories and information you post with your wildflower shots.

This is from my latest tour of #LakeMartin in the #AtchafalayaBasin near Breau Bridge, La. It was back in late July and I began going through these shots just a few days ago!!

For a mere $20, you can get a ride through the swamp in a flat-bottomed boat with a few other folks and a guide who will charm you with his knowledge of the flora and fauna, shared with humor in a Cajun accent and tongue-in-cheek reassurances. A fascinating flower and information from +John Munt for #wildflowerwednesday. Such a pretty cornflower blue!

Closed Gentian - Gentiana andrewsii

The flower petals do not open so it looks like a bud
may have two whorls of flowers

Wet places, prefers partial shade
look for it at moist woodland borders
1 - 2 feet
Aug - Oct bloom time

Closed Gentians are almost exclusively pollinated by bumblebees. The bumbles are strong enough to work their way into the flower.
mutualistic association
- the bumblebees have a "private" source of nectar
- the plant has a "loyal" pollinator insuring cross pollination

Sitka Valerian (Valeriana sitchensis)
shared with #wildflowerwednesday curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: There are 15 native species in the Valerian family; this particular plant is restricted to the Pacific Northwest (Brandenburg 2010). Originally described by German botanist Gustav Heinrich von Bongard probably from specimens collected near Sitka, Alaska (Wikipedia).

Characteristics: This perennial spreads by rhizome in moist soil of mid-elevation mountain sites (Lesica 2012). Grows as high as 4 feet (Turner and Gustafson 2006). Flowers are colored mostly white with pink tones bunched in a rounded dome. ___I really must go to Alaska. I am certain I unfairly stereotype the climate! Venus Looking Glass (Triodanis perfoliata)

Aaannnnnddddd.... tomorrow is #wildflowerwednesday! So I hope you will share a shot from your wildflower adventures.

Question: Would you have reached in there and plucked off the dead bloom just above and to the right of the open bloom before taking this shot??

I ask because I debate with myself about how much to "tamper with the evidence," so to speak. I'm sure that is, in part, due to the fact that my photography came about via journalism. But add to that, my botanist friend is also a little troubled when he sees me reach into a frame I'm about to shoot to remove, say, pine needles that are going to look like gleaming swords in the OOF background of a shot. "Cleaning up nature," he calls it, and in his opinion, nature does not need cleaning up, not even for a "more beautiful" shot by... more »

"Cleaning up nature," he calls it, and in his opinion, nature does not need cleaning up, not even for a "more beautiful" shot by some other set of standards.

Be sure to tag #wildflowerwednesday and me, +Bette Kauffman, you curious curator, with your images. And insights. And so forth.

BTW, I should mention, in this case going to a different bloom that does not have spent petals in the near background was not an option. This was the freshet bloom on the one plant we encountered that day. The out of focus bloom in the bottom background was too far gone.___

Nice ink, I said!

"Make stories, not photos," Levi Sims said.

And this is day 5 of #fivefavefaces for me and this might be the first 5-day challenge I have finished in a a year or more! Such fun. Thank you, +Paul Howard. I am inspired to go looking for lots more faces to make stories with. Anybody else out there have some faces to share?

The Rainbow Bridge

For Buck, Tess and Brandy, who wait for me on the other side. For Chloe (+Don Spenner). For Tripod, my friend's cat, who isn't there yet but is probably on his way. And for all the beloved animals who have gone ahead.

My friend texted me this morning that Tripod is not doing well and very possibly will die. I spoke of the Rainbow Bridge; she had never heard of it. So I explained that it is where our beloved animals go to meet their loved ones and scamper over to the other side. There they play and wait for us.

And then I was a little sad all day myself, especially remembering my sweet German shepherd Brandy, who was my consolation after my husband died. Late this afternoon working in the yard, I looked up and saw this.

Yes, fur babies, I see and I'll join you one day. In the meantime, have fun!

Me and My Son

Ok, this is not a two-fer. Although I can tolerate my own face most of the time reasonably well, the fave face for my #fivefavefaces today is the one in the little frame over my shoulder, and I'm missing the shit out of him right now. So there. +Paul Howard

+Bob Danley, my botanist friend would call this kind of flower an "LYN." That's "little yellow number"--his answer to those many hard-to-differentiate flowers that come in yellow in Louisiana! They sure do warm the landscape. Thanks for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday.

Hillside Arnica (Arnica fulgens)
shared with #wildflowerwednesday curated by +Bette Kauffman

Natural History Notes: Oh boy, this genus is a bear when identifying some 26 native species restricted to the western U.S. (Brandenburg 2010). There is an additional difficulty, hybridization occurs between three species :-)

Characteristics: Hitchcock and Cronquist (1991) describe location for this plant at low to mid-elevation in the mountains. Lescia (2012) is more specific; look for this plant in woodlands, meadows, steppe and grasslands. ___+Bob Danley, my botanist friend would call this kind of flower an "LYN." You just never know! Had no idea smartweed was edible. So I don't need to worry about starving after I retire since we have lots of it in Louisiana! Thanks to +John Munt for sharing with #wildflowerwednesday.

Swamp Smartweed - Polygonum coccinetum

In general smartweeds are edible, some are mild tasting while others are too bitter to eat.

The thickened joints and sheaths where leaves are attached to the stems along with the spiked flower clusters make smartweeds easy to recognize. There are over 40 types and many variations but you’ll know a smartweed when you see one. You just might not know which one though.

Swamp Smartweed has both a terrestrial and aquatic form and in fluctuating water levels it can be both. Considering it’s name it’s not hard to figure out the habitat. It grows in swamps, ditches, along shorelines and anywhere there is shallow water. It covers a wide range and can be found throughout the north eastern states.
