Peter Vogel44,233Sharing a circle of terrific ICT educatorsHere in British Columbia we are about to head back to school. What better time to share this circle of people who share their expertise in Information and Communications Technology or Educational Technology if you prefer another label.I've been a Google+ user since day 1 and in fact I began using it, appropriately enough, while on a three-week stay at the birthplace of the World Wide Web, CERN, perhaps better known as the home of the Large Hadron Collider. I began building this circle of plussers while there. Now I must admit I haven't been good about culling dormant accounts of late so don't expect everyone in the circle to be a gem. Also, if you happen across this post and circle and wish to be included (on the basis outlined above) just send me a note.  2014-08-29 22:11:48451101

Peter Vogel24,368ICT / Ed Tech CircleIt's a long weekend here in Canada (we celebrate Thanksgiving well ahead of our neighbours to the south). Here is a circle of people with a passion for technology in education and who have shared that enthusiasm here on Google+. And that makes for an ideal group to share their energy with others perhaps just starting to explore the rich environment of G+. Consider this a Thanksgiving gift from Canada. 2012-10-07 00:18:36420315

Peter Vogel18,019New to Google+? Interested in Ed Tech? Are you a teacher? It's the end of the work week (well, here in Vancouver it is). Adding this circle to your Google+ presence will surely see your stream filling with content that you may be able to put to use next week. The people in this circle are passionate about what they do in their working lives. They share that passion through their presence here on Google+.2012-04-13 23:05:25408815
Peter Vogel17,847Tech Ed CircleI am sharing the circle below for those who are looking for educators and those who actively write about education with an emphasis on information and communications technologies (let's call it tech ed for short). Just prior to posting this I used the Uncircle+ Chrome extension to comb the circle for inactive G+ accounts, resulting in the removal of around 60 from an initial set of 470. However, it appears that Uncircle+ is not completely reliable. At least one account remains that is apparently non-existent and a few accounts remain that were inactive during the period I specified. I wanted Uncircle+ to identify accounts with no activity since January 1.2012-04-09 01:23:424056313

Big thanks to +Jennifer Magiera +Ziggy Dziegman +Ann Lemmer +Alice Keeler +Renee Henderson +Stacie Ryan +C. Tondreau +Justin Brink and others for beta testing and offering feedback.

Though there are not yet any available APIs for Classroom per-se, I was able to use the Google Drive APIs to get a "light" integration of Doctopus / Goobric to work with Google Classroom assignments.  Looking forward to taking this even further once the Classroom team gets some APIs out the door!

Here's what the integration does at present:

A) Auto-discovers whether the Doctopus user has any Google Classroom classes and offers an additional option in Step 1 of setup called "--Ingest Google CR Assignment."

B) Lets the user select from CR classes, and then assignments within the selected class.  It discovers these from Drive, so it can only find files for students that are actually available in that folder in Drive.  This means that students who haven't started the assignment will not have their files listed...

C) Pulls these Classroom submissions into a Doctopus sheet and queues them up for use with "Refresh last edit," "Attach Goobric" and "Send feedback email" tools that Doctopus users are used to.  No student folder keys are pulled in because these student folders are not made viewable to the teacher in Classroom.  "Look for new submissions" button allows teacher to pull in any student files that may have been launched after step 1 was originally performed.

Owing to the lack of APIs, here's what the integration doesn't do:

1) Touch sharing privileges on any of the files in Classroom.

2) Can't see student assignments that haven't been launched from a template or standalone (non-template) Drive files that haven't yet submitted.

3) Doesn't submit rubric scores back into Google Classroom.  Instead, scores go to Doctopus spreadsheet.

4) Doesn't "return" the assignment to the student - e.g. emails student rubric score but doesn't transfer ownership back to student or change their assignment status in Google Classroom.___

The add-on version of gCF seems to have a random issue that is preventing folders from being created.   If you create a copy of the production spreadsheet the issue does not seem to be present.   I have included a link in the About this community to the spreadsheet.

New update:   I have launched an update that should allow people to reset the folder creation lock if there is an error.   The entire folder creation process needs to be rewritten, as it was the one portion from version 2 that has not been touched, other than to remove the old API that Google is going to discontinue.   As a note the new API is buggy and more restrictive.

I want to apologize to everyone for not getting back to people in a timely fashion, I like many of you are getting ready for school.  Which includes rolling out 500 Chromebooks to all students and staff.  Our school went with Hapara, so I am not personally using gCF anymore.  I will do my best to continue to support gCF as I still believe in it's value, especially over Google Classroom.

There appears that many are having an issue with the folder creation already working.    I have not been able to replicate this in any of my tests so it is very hard for me to troubleshoot.   If anyone has some steps I can take that will help me please share.

If there is any advanced users that want to take a look at the code and help that way I would be willing to share.

+Andrew Stillman  or other.   Does anyone have a solution for sharing out documents that end-users are supposed to make copies of?   I am trying to come up with a solution for all the forms in our front and business office (PO request, Leave Request, building use form).

I was thinking a webpage that all the end-user needed to do was click a single link and it would automatically make a copy for them.   I know that there was a way in the old sheets by modifying the url, but I would like to have something for all types of google docs.

Beta testers wanted!
The add-on version of the script "MCQ tests: email score & correction" is available thanks to the hard work of +laszlo de brissac

Our motto: "Grade reporting doesn’t get easier than this."
For now on, you won't find it in the add-on store. It's available to anyone with the link until we are sure it is perfect, so please try and give feedbacks. The best is to start from an empty sheet and just follow the instructions in the sidebar.

+Kyle Horst If you can help with a nice logo we would be very happy!

For now on, you won't find it in the add-on store. It's available to anyone with the link until we are sure it is perfect, so please try and give feedbacks. The best is to start from an empty sheet and just follow the instructions in the sidebar.

Does anyone know of a way I can run a Chrome Browser extension on a Chromecast?   Not as a cast but directly running on it.   I want to use it for a http://www.risevision.com/ digital signage player.

I am pretty sure it cannot do it out-of-th-box, but I didn't know if there was a mod or a way to flash the chromecast to make it possible.

Texthelp’s Highlighting Tools add-on in Google Docs lets you highlight key areas of your document to collect, group and learn from later. By “collecting highlights” you can extract them into a new document for students or educators to review. http://goo.gl/qfvyrb

I think Google Classroom is going to be a hit, however I finally got to take a long look at how it works and was disappointed by the workflow.    The turn-it-in feature was something I think education needed, and the swapping owners during the process seems like a great way to do things, but it does raise some concerns for me:

1. The workflow attempts to mimic the paper model of the classroom.   This is what irks me the most, because it is counter to the collaborative nature of google docs.   The current GC model does not encourage live collaboration, in fact it seems to discourage it.    One of the best things about Google Docs is that it allows for redefinition of paperless workflow.   GC turn-in workflow is nothing more than substitution.    When looking at GC from a SMAR model approach.

2. No file/folder management.   GC is designed that the students no longer need to learn proper file and folder management.   This is another pet-peeve of mine as I see how much bad folder management effects productivity later on.   Again Google has a great redefined workflow with file and folder management, where people can put things in multiple places, and set sharing individually.   I don't see a Classroom using GC even accessing the folders in the back-end and therefore no longer providing teachable moments for proper organizational management.

My prediction is that this product will get used and gClassFolders, Doctopus, and others may fade away, not because GC is better, but because it is Bigger.    My hope is that teachers will stand-up for the redefinition that the authentic Google Apps provides and continue to use products like gClassFolders, or at least demand that GC step-up and become a truly redefining product.___

Has anyone figured out a way to protect a Form from being shared with other users?

1. I can use pages and text validation to force a password to be entered, but sharing a password with a link is just as easy as sharing the link.

2. I know I could require sign-in to the domain to access the form, but they would be sharing it with others in the same domain so it doesn't matter.

Can other users who have used this please let me know if they have been able to recreate this issue or have been able to create folders with 75+ entries.

Hey all! First time gClassFolders user and loving it. One slight problem: after creating about 50 or so folders, I now get the following error in every status box: "Assignment Folder created, Error with Student email: folder created but not shared." The folders are there, but I must manually share them all with my students. When I do so, I get one of those annoying Word Verification Captchas. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!___Can other users who have used this please let me know if they have been able to recreate this issue or have been able to create folders with 75+ entries.

For those that have done large 1:1 roll-outs.   Is there tricks that you have learned that help.   I am thinking that a bar-code scanner would be beneficial.
