Jo Mills3,965Did you not mark your calendars? Shame, shame. Last year +Scott Cramer dared me to sit under my desk at work and share a picture; I did, he reshared and viral chaos ensued ;P It was so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event, so get under your desk (or kitchen table or coffee table), take a pic and post it on G+ with the ridiculously long hashtag #InternationalTakeAPictureUnderYourDeskDay ! And, mind your noggin. Last year some companies even got their whole office involved; along with kids and pets - sitting under your desk is for everyone ;P It's Friday. You aren't really working anyway. Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych469,842It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160

I hydrated really well yesterday, I slept really well last night. This morning, out of nowhere, I have a migraine so bad I was trying to not throw up before I finally gave up and threw Sumatripan at it. Happy birthday to me!

Because I was lazy yesterday and only shopped and cleaned but did not prep dough, I am going to fumble my way through making pizza dough until the drug kicks in. If it kicks in.

Then the cake.

Then I will lay the hell down.

....after I drive Middlest to her friend's brother's party to hang out.

Also, there's snow pending. Which has people asking me if there even IS a party.

Off to an interview. Got my face on. Am caffeinated and fed. Have a list of good question. Looking like a combo of two of the Ghostbusters, I think.

Wish my calm and success.

So there I was, in the grocery store, picking up some stuff, and while I was checking out the cashier complimented this pin, which is on the lapel of my coat.

"Oh, thank you," I said. "I got it from a writer friend, who made them as part of promoting her books at a convention this weekend, and she saved one for me."

"Yeah? It's real pretty!"

"Yeah! I love it. And it's perfect for the book - it's this great Young Adult space opera, where this sort of ensemble of teenagers living in a space station are struggling with family relationships and what they want to do with their lives-"

"Oh that sounds great! There should be more books like that. Teenagers are always struggling with things like that."

"It's called Derelict, and it's by L.J. Cohen."

"OH! Derelict! I've heard of that!"

"Yeah?!"

"YEAH! My friend Carol was telling me about it. She has more time to read than I do, and she was telling me all about it and that I should read it, and I remember the title, it's so unique."

"You totally should read it. It's SUCH a great book!"

And, aside from her saying that she hopes that the author maybe gets to be on the Today Show or something (XD), that's the story of how I bumped into someone in the wild who had heard of Derelict without me having told them about it. And you should get it too, because it's so great. http://amzn.to/2iEXX1M

It's a Monday-flavored Tuesday. I woke from strange dreams in which the dead ferret, Jesus-like, arose from the dead several day after the fact.

Awake is marginally better, although I forgot to put Eldest's snack bag in his backpack before he went off to school. I'll drop it off presently. Right now I am managing the younger two. Youngest need a LOT of prodding to get out of bed. Middlest got herself, but nothing was satisfactory for breakfast except pancakes, which I didn't reasonably have time to make because Youngest wasn't getting up. On the upside she finally settled on carrots, which are better for her starch-addicted little self anyhow.

I have a writing Hangout today, and need to gather a text prompt or two to bring to the (virtual) table. Got any suggestions?

I need to remember later to ping my Patreon Patrons about planning the viewing for the next two Drunkblogs. At least one is probably going to be Captain America: Civil War, because it's free on Netflix and I haven't seen it... but now I have enough Patrons funding my shenanigans that once a month I can actually do a movie that costs monies! OPTIONS UNLOCKED!!!

I have several body-things going on, but I think I won't talk about them here. Perhaps in another post, after I'm caffeinated enough to properly make that judgement call.

In other news, planning is in high gear for a monthly game night at my place, which may also involve one person coming over early so we can experiment with baking. Need to poke my mom for her recipes for banana bread and zucchini bread.

I compiled a list of possible graphic novels for Middlest's grandmother to get her for a late holiday gift. I thought it might be fun and useful for a lot of folks who also have or will have kiddos of the same age.

A lot of it comes on the recommendation of friends who have daughters around the same age and who have similar interests as Middlest, from a discussion that arose on FB about Drama ( http://amzn.to/2iyHxb9 ) by Raina Telgemeier. Other graphic novel books by the same author are:

Ghosts http://amzn.to/2jrttEf which looks like it deals with facing ones fears about ghosts/death and negotiating ones owns wants with that of siblings.

Smile http://amzn.to/2jrvBMv which is about a girl who falls and breaks her teeth, therefore having to deal with braces and a retainer plus usual sixth grade stuff.

Smile http://amzn.to/2jrvBMv which is about a girl who falls and breaks her teeth, therefore having to deal with braces and a retainer plus usual sixth grade stuff.

Raina Telgemeier also got tapped to adapt the Babysitters Club books into graphic novels! They start with Kristy's Big Idea http://amzn.to/2jQBdwT which is, of course, the one in which Kristy and the other girls set up the babysitters club.

As for books by other authors:

Amulet is a 7-book series starting with Stonekeeper http://amzn.to/2iDQenM in which two kids rescue their mom from mysterious monsters.

Gunnerkrigg Court is a 5 (I think) book series starting with Orientation http://amzn.to/2jX3fL2 in which a girl is in her first year at a weird boarding school with robots, demons, gods, and other mythic creatures; it seems mildly Harry Potter-ish.

Nimona http://amzn.to/2iyzsDg is one I read when it was a webcomic, and it's wonderful; Nimona is a shapechanger who decides to become the assistant of a guy who seems like an evil overlord, but he's more interested in maintaining the status quo of good vs. evil as opposed to actually winning of the golden-haired hero guy.

A Wrinkle In Time http://amzn.to/2jQB1O7 is the graphic novel adaptation of the absolutely amazing book by Madeleine L'Engle

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 1: Squirrel Power http://amzn.to/2iyEWxZ is the first of a 4+ book series. She's a super hero in the Marvel universe (with The Avengers - Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, etc.) with the proportional speed and strength of a squirrel, and a giant squirrel tale. Reviews say that kids like it who also like the Zita The Space Girl graphic novels, which I know she does because she's gotten it out of the library at least twice.

Princeless http://amzn.to/2jQCiEP is a series about Princess Adrienne (a princess of color, no less!) whose parents lock her in a tower to get rescued by a prince, but she gets bored, fed up, and rescues herself before going on swashbuckling adventures.

Ada Twist, Scientist http://amzn.to/2jX64vC is about a little black girl using science to understand the world around her.

The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage http://amzn.to/2iyKMzs is about Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage, but in an alternate universe where they actually do build the Difference Engine (the first computer) "and then use it to build runaway economic models, battle the scourge of spelling errors, explore the wilder realms of mathematics, and, of course, fight crime."___

I peopled so much this weekend! Holy shit, I have been an extrovert in exile for far too long. I came home last night exhausted and practically vibrating.

Today is a chill day of fukkits and nuthindoin. Middlest is off to the Museum of Science with her bestie, and the lads are videoing and gaming. SALM is conquering the world in Civ IV. I just spent time compiling a list of graphic novels and links into an email to Middlest's grandmother, who wants to get her some as a belated Christmas present. I'll post that list in its own post, for ease of resharing.

I was hoping I could also maybe tap y'all on a related thing. She asked all the kids what they want for Christmas, and Eldest said he wants a phone. Soooo she wants to get him a prepaid/pay-as-you-go type phone of the sort where you can access the internet using available wifi and play games and... more »

Which I welcome, but also am not sure where to start? Are there, like prepaid Galaxy phones or something like that?

Party Day Redux was a HUGE SUCCESS! There's always some inherent nervousness and uncertainty when bringing together friends from various areas and eras of your life. Will they get on? Will they NOT get on? Last night I hosted a friend from middle school, a friend from my post-undergrad B&N days, and two friends from grad school in addition to me, James, and two of our kids plus a bonus kid.

It. Was. AWESOME.

Everyone totally gelled from minute one. The pizza came out excellently, and I need to figure out how to tweak the crust. We had a blast with games, of which two of my guests brought some so we never even dipped into my own game piles. We played (and lost) a game of Oregon Trail: The Card Game ( http://amzn.to/2jMCtRB ) and then a round of The Great Dalmuti ( http://amzn.to/2izsP76 ) with tons of conversation in between and afterward.

By the time we were winding down for the night, folks were talking about making this into a monthly game night. I am SO into that. ( +Lisa Cohen, +Anthony Deaver, +Shaun Thomas - take note! )

Even clearing up has been minimal and gone well; I still have my developed habit, it seems, of doing periodic clearing up as a gathering goes, so at the end of the night all I had to do was shrink the table, cover the cake, put away the two remaining slices of pizza, and.... that was pretty much it. I took care of all the dishes this morning because it required emptying the dishwasher first, and I was tired and well-beered and just noped.

There's no need for hair of the dog, but I am treating myself to a breakfast beer while SALM makes bacon happen and the coffee brews in the press. I took care of all the dishes. The kids are happily Minecrafting in the living room. Eldest will be home later.

I spent some time on the phone with my mother this morning; among other things, we talked about this thingum: http://amzn.to/2izu7Ph Once I am employed and have the spare monies, I am going to look at replacing our cheapie wire industrial shelving TV stand with this thingum.

Morning Warning! West coast salmon might be infected with Japanese tapeworm. Take note and all appropriate caution: http://wsvn.com/news/us-world/us-salmon-may-carry-japanese-tapeworm-scientists-say/

Resharing for the morning crowd. <3

Now on Redbubble - the Lord of Time clock! Or, if you prefer, the basic Circular Gallifreyan clock. Each glyph at each number location is unique because each is, in fact, that number translated into Circular Gallifreyan.

Available with a black, white, or bamboo frame, and with black, white, red, or aqua hands.

Variations will be forthcoming, featuring relevant words, phrases, and quotations as larger glyphs in the center of the clock, but if you just can't wait and have to have it now? #GEDDIT

Mornthing!

It is Party Day (Redux), and the world is safe! Also, I am freshly clean and moisturized, and caffeinating, so basically I am feeling pretty awesome right now despite being up till 4am. How're you doing? Am I seeing you later? :D

Thanks to last week's big push on apartment cleanup and food prep, I haven't really got a lot to do today; the cake is pretty well defrosted, and the frosting is out on the counter coming up to room temperature so I can frost said cake. I have to do a little picking up in the living room, which is mostly just a matter of straightening the piles of board games and tidying away the bin of LEGO.

I have to make replacement pizza dough, but that can wait until this afternoon; it doesn't take long.

I have to do a little picking up in the living room, which is mostly just a matter of straightening the piles of board games and tidying away the bin of LEGO.

I have to make replacement pizza dough, but that can wait until this afternoon; it doesn't take long.

Just finished watching I Am Not A Serial Killer on Netflix. I'm glad I didn't save it for a Drunkblog because I probably would have missed some things and TL;DR'd out. Overall I really liked it.

In brief: Teen boy in rural-ish town is diagnosed as a sociopath pretty much the exact same time people in his town start getting killed. Boy investigates killings; finds killer. Killer is not human, but appears to be. Cat-and-mouse shenanigans, missteps and some wonderfully tense interpersonal negotiations, and then climax and fade to credits while Spirit In The Sky plays. I like that song.

They definitely saved their special effects budget for just the right point.

Not a gorefest, but includes funeral parlor corpse-prep scenes, so not recommended if you get squicked by blood, organs, or people being opened at the front like a bag of chips.

Photo #3: your address here! Project Weekly Snailmail is a continued success. Week 2 mailing is going out to my grandmother.

When I was in Target before Christmas with one of the lads, there were boxes of white cards in the Dollar Spot section for $3, so I grabbed one as a stocking stuffer for me. I'm going to use them for my correspondence until I run out, and since they are plain white I get to decorate the fronts. Week 1 Friend got their name in Circular Gallifreyan. Grandma gets a lotus flower. ^_^

Today is a day of laundering and packing so I can bring Eldest to his dad's. And then party prep! Because my previously postponed party is tomorrow. Woo! You comin'? ;-D

I need to figure out at what point to start the short row heel.

Now we are six I am home, and there is no water. The Landlord (adorable little old Russian man) is working on the upstairs apartment, and today's task apparently includes replumbing part of the kitchen to move where the sink is so that when he puts in the new counters he doesn't have to cut the counters or cabinets. Therefore, the water is shut off. Luckily I ran the dishwasher already this morning, and I had time to fill up a pitcher and the teapot on the stove before the shutoff. It'll only be a few hours.

I also got to do some adulting in terms of calling up the Town Clerk with questions about the Street Address Listing/Census that SALM and I both got in the mail yesterday; his only has him on it, and mine has me and ALL the kids. Some discussion got it squared away, and I've done everything except signing where SALM has to sign. I even entertained myself by not just including a note with the forms, but writing a fully formatted letter. I'm not counting it as my Week 2 outgoing mail, but as bonus mail.

No word back from the job interview yet.

I'm looking forward to my Hangout with +Murphy Jacobs this morning.

And I have coffee with homemade vanilla syrup in.

I think, for once, I have the hang of Thursday.

The Beast of London

By the 15th century, the Templar Knights had disappeared, but deep in the bowels of the British Museum in a case well sealed and protected lies a strange memorial to their impact on the city of London.

London of the early 12th century was on its way to becoming an impressive city, but its life and its blood was the Thames River. Without the river commerce would grind to a halt as the people of London discovered to their horror in 1216...

The first ships seemed simply to have disappeared, but the monster wasted little time in this caution. Soon, many Londoners had seen the gaping maw licked by flames dragging a hapless crew to its death. It was a fire salamander, and in the Autumn of 1216 it was estimated to be 40 feet long with jaws that gaped 10 feet wide.

By the spring of 1217, the monster was no longer a nuisance, it was a deadly plague. No boat could navigate the Thames... no raft was small enough, no ship was large enough to resist the demon of the Thames. Worse, the beast was growing! The latest reports called it 70 feet long with jaws opening 15 feet. Our instinct is to discount this absurd growth, and yet few could impeach its source.

He, our source, enters the story in August of 1217. London had begged, prayed, blasphemed, and killed in desperate attempts to exorcise or appease their curse; to no avail. On June 14, four men painted themselves with the Devil’s Cross and proclaimed themselves the Dark Priests of the Beast. They built a ship and doused it in oil; then, they sailed it down the river. Dark Priests they may have been, but they died screaming like any man. On July 28, London sent three virgins (the youngest not yet 13) down the Thames to the monster. It was thought that this would appease the evil god: the monster’s hunger exceeded even this atrocity.

On August 23, our source received his summons. His given name is lost in his chosen name: Honorus. He was a Templar Knight and possibly a saint. That morning, he was commanded to destroy the beast.

London in fear and desperation had turned to their most jealous weapon, the Templars... warrior monks who fought with the fierce, perhaps fanatic, frenzy of the devout. The city had exhausted all other options; the monks were its last hope, and Honorus was the greatest of the Knights.

The battle was truly a footnote to his preparation... Honorus ventured into the woods upstream from London. He forsook shelter, clothing, food, and sleep for four days, meditating on the coming struggle. When the four days ended, he stalked and killed a stag without weapon or aid. With the skin of the stag he made clothing; from its flesh he regained his strength; and with its guts, he lashed five logs into a raft fit for his purpose.

Honorus set the raft in motion. He had outfitted himself with the only item he would use in this fight which had not come out of the forest with him. A sword of Spanish steel, blue with the sky, lay in his lap. Soon, he felt the swell of the water disturb his raft: the monster was coming, yet he sat unmoving.

The beast broke the surface.

No human is perfect; a splinter of the collapsing raft clipped Honorus’ left foot as he leapt into the water. He had timed his jump slightly too late, but no matter, the injury will not be important until after the battle.

The monster was above the water only momentarily; time enough for Honorus to drive his sword between two of its scales. The monster thrashed in pain, turning its exposed flesh from the steaming water. Honorus was lifted from the water as the beast rolled. He gauged his stroke and leapt, striking the monster’s eye.

Angered and half blinded, the beast threw Honorus into the river and grasped him in its immense jaws. Honorus swam quickly past the teeth into the monster’s mouth. Inside, the questing tongue scalded his feet as he searched for purchase again, and we shall ignore this injury for now.

Once he had braced himself inside the beast’s mouth, pushing with all his strength against the slowly rising tongue, he took aim. Honorus had time to make only one thrust.

When his journal recalls these events, it attributes Honorus’ “luck” in this battle to aid from the Divine. We do not wish to detract from the glory of God, but surely He will not envy His servant. Is it coincidence that Honorus’ blade struck true to the brain? Honorus had already studied carefully the anatomy of the salamander a week before he was summoned to fight the beast. Did Honorus not know that the water’s rush against the beast’s exposed flank would cause it such pain? In his journal, “August 24: And once I am atop the beast and it has rolled from the water, where then to strike?”

Two weeks after Honorus was told to lift the curse of London, the beast was dead. The next day London celebrated Honorus; the town would live because of him. Three days later, gratitude had disappeared.

The body of the beast had lodged itself firmly in the mire less than half a mile downstream of London. Although it was yet intact (perhaps due to its incredible armor), it would surely soon rot. While not so great a terror, the rotting beast would be almost as dangerous as the live beast, attracting disease and scavengers. No ship could move the carcass. The people of London called upon Honorus.

Honorus’ solution was difficult but practical, and he began as soon as he had retrieved his sword. He fasted for two days; then, he ate the cooked meat of the huge salamander and fasted for a third day. When he suffered no ill effects, Honorus began dissecting the beast. With the help of London, Honorus soon had all the usable meat and intestines of the dead beast transformed into sausage.

A bizarre solution it was, but a good one. The sausage was soon discovered to be excellent and to keep easily for very long periods of time. Even more important, the sausage fast became incredibly popular throughout England and much of Europe. It began to reestablish the fame of London’s trade after the Hiatus of the Beast.

Still, Honorus has one final contribution to this history... It became vital that everyone knew from whence the incredible sausage of London came, and thus we return to Honorus’ injuries.

After the battle with the live beast and the crisis of the dead beast, Honorus took time to recover. Six weeks after he was first summoned, he was dressing the injuries on his feet. The problems of London were known to him. As he dipped a strip of paper like gauze into a healing salve, he had a thought.

One week later, each sausage shipped from London carried a fascinating new development: a label. Just as the gauze dried and closed on Honorus’ foot, the parchment around these sausages was attached; and all would know the fame of London from each link she sold.

In the end, despite all his other feats, it was this idea, the product label, that survived Honorus. In tribute to this advance, the British Museum houses the only known surviving label from Honorus’ sausages. And although even the tough gut of the Beast has long since faded to dust, the label may still be read. If our reader could go to the Museum and enter the Medieval wing’s most treasured collection, she could still read, in faint letters, the Label of Honor: It Was The Beast Of Thames, It Was The Wurst Of Thames...___

mornthing
