Jo Mills3,897Did you not mark your calendars? Shame, shame. Last year +Scott Cramer dared me to sit under my desk at work and share a picture; I did, he reshared and viral chaos ensued ;P It was so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event, so get under your desk (or kitchen table or coffee table), take a pic and post it on G+ with the ridiculously long hashtag #InternationalTakeAPictureUnderYourDeskDay ! And, mind your noggin. Last year some companies even got their whole office involved; along with kids and pets - sitting under your desk is for everyone ;P It's Friday. You aren't really working anyway. Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych462,744It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160

Drunkblog: The Madness of King George

It took me a little longer than expected to settle out the Spawn for bedtime, because Summer Vacation, but huzzah! They are down! The film is queued up, and my wine glass is filled!

Grab your own beverage, and queue up your copy if you have one. (Mine is on DVD, on loan from Ms. N.) If you don't want to know what happens, stay away! Because #HereThereBeSpoilers

"But Bliss! This movie has been out for 23 years, and is about a historical figure from the 18th century! How can there possibly be spoilers?!"

Well, I haven't seen it. I'm sure I can't be the only one.

Spoiler: I've been wanting to see this since its original run, and never got round to it.

I am super interested in making this, but not so much interested in using corn syrup. Is there anybuggy more experienced with baking that can tell me what its purpose is so I can figure out some substitution?

Good mornthing!

Wow, yesterday was a mess. I really wish Urgent Care didn't close at 4pm on Saturday - I ended up spending as much time in the ER waiting area as I usually do on an entire visit to the UC. On the upside, I got to explain Seinfeld a little to Eldest, because that's what was on the waiting room tv?

When we got home my phone seemed to promptly brick itself, but it's working this morning. Despite having a 70% charge it was still in lower power mode and apparently just opted to peace out fully until it reached full charge? Idk. Makes me uneasy.

There is absolutely nothing planned for today until after Eldest is up and I can see how his eyesight is doing. If still blurry, then according to the ER doc last night I should plan on at least 6 hours involved in seeing an ophthalmologist at Mass Eye & Ear.

There is absolutely nothing planned for today until after Eldest is up and I can see how his eyesight is doing. If still blurry, then according to the ER doc last night I should plan on at least 6 hours involved in seeing an ophthalmologist at Mass Eye & Ear.

The ER doc was great. Calm, informative, made sure I knew what the next step was every time he left the room. He, in turn, was delighted by me and kept telling me how great I was. I guess he doesn't see a lot of moms in the ER who keep their kids calm, happy, and occupied, and who quickly understand what he is saying, and can be trusted with applying numbing agents instead of just watching the nurse doing it. So yay me, good in a crisis situation.

An EMT/Firefighter dad plus a few years as a Red Cross lifeguard and then a college RA will do that for ya.

So hey, yeah. I still have the post-adrenaline feel of existing like three inches outside my own skin to the left, and no definite plan for today because I don't want to start things that will get interrupted when the boy rises.

Note to self: contact dad and ask to borrow his weedwhacker.

Hi. Tell me a nice thing. Take a picture of something pretty.

Re: "white supremacy" rally next week @ Chrissy Field (August 26): National Parks are open carry zones. The most helpful direct action SF residents can take is to park a car in EVERY parking space in Presidio from Saturday am until this is over. Leave your car there for the day. Militia members (& the Nazis) will have to park in San Francisco proper, where open carry is illegal. This will give SFPD a chance to intervene before militia members arrive for rally. (Pls signal boost)

Good mornthing!

What a ruddy mess last night was. If I look rumpled and frazzled, it is because watching The Babadook - a movie about a harried single mother with a non-neurotypical son who acts out in socially unacceptable ways - was interrupted by over an hour's worth of time by my own kid, including a meltdown that had him screaming obscenities at me and telling me he hated me for a good 20 minutes. So I was up till like 2am. I woke at 7am, and the kid was already up. Gave him meds and went back to sleep till ten. So I have technically had eight hours' sleep, but in two 4-hour chunks. My feels are as tired as the rest of me.

On the upside of things, Eldest is pretty great this morning. He stuck to the screens ban I imposed when I caught them with screens at late o'clock last night; when I got up at ten he was reading a Hardy Boys book. Just now, he cooked himself... more »

He stuck to the screens ban I imposed when I caught them with screens at late o'clock last night; when I got up at ten he was reading a Hardy Boys book. Just now, he cooked himself a birds nest for breakfast and is also having a banana, and has suggested a game of Apples To Apples.

I have no specific plans today, beyond looking over a short story for somebody, and finishing going over another story for somebuggy else.

I need more coffee but this was the last cupful in the jug.

Good mornthing!

I migrained my way into sleep last night. The upside is that I actually slept some; I only woke 6 or so times, and eventually fell into deep enough sleep to dream. I don't remember most of the Dream; I know it was very narrative, but all I have now are flashes.

Today I am doing a helpful for my mom. It is dropoff day for county fair entries, but all during hours when she is working. I am going to schlep Eldest along so he can swim in the pool at the Cove, and I get to take my pick of homegrown cucumbers and zucchini to bring home with me.

When I get home, I am either going to ensconce the children in quiet pursuits or kick them out of the house so I can catch up on recording. Later, I'm making an early dinner so that when SALM gets home we can go do Pokémon Go raids.

I am hoping that part of that will include some decent walking around. I and still too sedentary. I should look into one of this FitBit stylie hoobiedos to track my exercise. Does anybuggy have one of those they don't use any more?

In other news, I downloaded WhatsApp, and am now trying to figure out who I know who uses it.

Good mornthing!

My hair was very Keanu Reeves Circa Bill & Ted yesterday. Today it's more dark-Doris-Day-without-a-plan, I think. Feel free to suggest your own comparisons.

I slept horribly again. Lots of tossing and turning. On the upside, I was awake to say goodbye to SALM when he headed off to work. Sometime shortly before 6 I fell asleep and stayed that way until almost 10, in the thick of odd dreams.

I'm knitting a little. I'm going to grab Eldest and take him on a walk with me up to Middlest's school to drop off paperwork, and then just... around. The pediatrician was concerned by how much weight he's gained in the past year, so we're going to do some daily out-and-about together to help with that. He is a woefully sedentary child.

For now, I'm watching the second half of Odd Thomas; I have seen it before, so it's not a candidate for a drunkblog. I started watching it yesterday and stopped halfway through to go to bed because I was too tired to focus on it.

I just discovered that I've bitten almost all the nails on my left hand and two of the nails on my right down to the quick. I'm not okay but I don't know why.

Oh man, Middlest is in full teen attitude swing. Didn't want to get out of bed, get dressed, or eat breakfast. Buuuuuut she had to, because dentist appointment. We are now sitting in the waiting room, where she is complaining about Clifford The Big Red Dog on the tv, and the sunbathing snowman Olaf painted on the window. She has a point about Olaf - he does seem to be staring right at you, and it is creepy.

"All I wanted to do today was stay in my room, draw the blinds, and look at cat memes on the internet!"

Oh honey. I feel ya.

Good mornthing!

Holy smokes. I have had this dull, tight, angry pain in the lower left side of my back for like a week. Last night I asked SALM to work on it, and he did. I tranced out during the process, except for when the muscles went painfully wonk because as things started to shift and release my buttock and thigh went weird. (Sometimes I regret my shoddy knowledge of the musclar system. I'm sure all these muscles have names.) Islept so hard, y'all, and I don't think my dreams were nightmares.

Wait, they kind of were, wtf. I was sort of in prison, and then I was part of the BAU team from Criminal Minds. I got left behind at a crime scene but couldn't stay there, even though JJ was (she was flat-out laying down to take a nap there), but the plane had left without me, and I was somehow in danger from the unsub.

What the hell, brain?

Anyway, it's a quiet morning at home here. Youngest is watching Home on Netflix. Eldest is still asleep; his little brother revealed that they were up past midnight on screens in his bedroom. It's summer. I'm-a let him sleep a while longer.

Later there's pediatrician visits for them both. I hope that things go better this time than last time - last time, there were shots, and we discovered that Youngest goes into a straight-up panic attack about getting needlepoked. It was awful. This time I am prepared to just restrain him from the get-go.

I have some knitting. And a cowboy hat. Summertime, hooooooooooo!

Stayed up past my bedtime but it was good times. Marathoned a bunch of Orphan Black season 1, and when I went to bed at stupid o'clock in the morning SALM woke up and we saved the world. Good times.

I'm showered, I'm fed, I'm caffeinated.... time for more Orphan Black, I guess.

I went to the thrift store with SALM today as part of our out-and-about Spawnless time. We went to get him sneakers, but alas, earwax! there were none in his size.

Given that my bust-waist-hip measurements have shifted sharply in the last 2.5 months, I decided to play Dress Rack Roulette. I went through the approximate range I know in theory I should fit now, picked out four dresses, and hit the dressing room. I did not really expect any of them to fit.

Blisstopians, they all fit me.

Not only did they all fit me, they all looked really good. I took pictures of three out of the 4; I did not love the construction of the I pictured one.

I went into it just wanting to see how I actually size out.

I came out of it with two new dresses.

Here are the pictures, and me with my windblown Saturday fukkit hair.

Good Mornthing!

This is still one of my favorite mugs that I made. There is a coffee spider on it, but I always squish it so it doesn't steal my coffee.

We had a lovely late night; by the time I got back from my too-long drive (with stops at a grocery store and transition time at Spawnfather's included, I was basically out and driving and whatnot from 3pm to 10:30. Traffic was bad, y'all.) it was, as parenthetically mentioned, half past 10. This did not keep us from taking in the latest episode of The Mist on Amazon Prime (are any of you watching that? I have theories.), and then carrying on into several episodes of Doctor Who.

We started right up with the first episode of the Eccleston season a few weeks ago, because he has seen two or three random New Who episodes, but hasn't actually watched them all in order. While I appreciate that as being quite... more »

We started right up with the first episode of the Eccleston season a few weeks ago, because he has seen two or three random New Who episodes, but hasn't actually watched them all in order. While I appreciate that as being quite in tune with the spirit of The Doctor, dipping in and out of time and place but overall rather disconnected from the narrative, I feel like the man is missing out, and he's game for it since we don't have any new Blacklist or Zombie Nation to watch. We got as far as one of the episodes that I tend to forget exists, with the companion I forget exists.

I had a terrible, terrible dream of my mother telling me about an awful thing having happened to me as a child and then dreamed my way through living/remembering that thing. I have awakened sort of twitchy, thanks to that, and rather then stay curled up in bed with a warm SALM I came downstairs to make coffee happen and, while it brewed, I emptied the dishwasher and then emptied the sink into the dishwasher. I've been trying to get that done before bedtime every night as part of my effort to keep the recently-tidied kitchen clean. Last night I just sort of noped out of it.

There are no specific plans for today as yet; at bedtime last night we talked about getting up, breakfasting, watching a DW ep while our food settled, and then saving the world for a while prior to going for a walk somewhere. I am totally game for this very general plan but, except for the coffee, am not going to initiate it until the man gets up.

Now is the time for coffee and quiet contemplation, and attempting to rescue my Fallout Shelter game from itself because I had it running with the sound off last night while we were watching shows and I wasn't really paying attention to it because I was having conversations elsenet which means I completely missed it when there was an eruption of Radroaches that spread through the Vault and killed almost thirty of my thirty-five Dwellers. Yeesh!

Radroaches sound like that should be awesome, like, totally tubular, man, but I assure you they are not.

Oh world, the safeness of you!

The Spawn have been set to cleaning tasks at home while I go clean at Ms. N's. I put Eldest's laundry in the dryer when I left, so he will have clean clothing at Spawnfather's this weekend.

My forehead is still kinda borked. I tried the charcoal sugar scrub before this morning's shower, and followed it up with a moisturizing creme usually meant for eczema. We'll see how that works out.

Good mornthing!

My forehead is angry and I have no magic fix. Literally or figuratively.

I am also grumpy and short-tempered this morning, and am trying to figure out why. Time of the cycle, perhaps; I shall check the app. It also may be externalization of a personal matter that should not be making me angry but is because of relationship PTSD.

The unexamined life may not be worth living, but the examined life is ruttin' exhausting sometimes.

Today is not going to be exhausting, but certainly busy. I'm going to Ms. N's to clean for at least 2-3 hours but she asked me to leave it openended so it could be as much as 4-4.5. I have to be done by 2, at any rate, so I can zoom home and scoop up Youngest for an eye appointment at 3 and therapy at 5.

Good mornthing!

I was up past midnight and set my alarm for half past seven. Why was I bam awake at quarter past six? It is a mystery.

Today is going to be split among dogsitting, Fallout Shelter, and trying to read the rest of the way through an author's revisions for a second pass of edits/suggestions.

Also there is a niggling little bit of potential story in the back of my brain. I'm-a let it percolate and ferment.

Never keep your giant on the second floor

This is actually a piece of art by Mario Mankey. When a 5-story abandoned bank in Berlin was slated for being replaced by condos this year, some artists decided to do crazy things with it before it gets torn down. As word spread, more and more joined, and now about 175 artists are involved. The project is called The Haus You can see more of it here:

http://www.brooklynstreetart.com/theblog/2017/03/16/rocking-the-haus-a-5-floor-berlin-bank-is-transformed-by-artists/

But this piece is my favorite. It's called "Ego Erectus". For some more photos of it, go here:

http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2017/08/a-pair-of-giant-feet-plunge-through-the-ceiling-of-an-abandoned-german-bank/

Why do I like this piece better than the other pieces in The Haus? That's a bit tricky, but maybe it's this: it consists of just one idea, and a simple one, but an audacious one, worked out with obsessive attention to detail and meticulous craftsmanship.

Good mornthing!

It is a dim and rainy sort of day here, overcast and cool. I sent Youngest off to his summer program with his trusty hoodie to help keep him warm. I also had to do battle be calm and reasonable Mom at the van driver, because there was an incident yesterday that he says my kiddo started but the lad already told me about and it was apparently predicated on the other kid telling my boy that he looked like a dweeb because of his broken glasses. Like, granted, my kid landed the first punch, but that shit doesn't come out of nowhere.

I'm not super impressed with Van Driver Guy, and I hope he doesn't end up being the driver this year. I will request a change or drive the kid myself if that happens, because he was unnecessarily combative. Anyway, the kid is off to what I hope will be a good day.

Eldest set an alarm to get up and come with me to pick up our doggo guest, but shut it off and promptly went back to sleep.

Middlest is enmeshed in a sewing project - apparently V!Bestie has some sort of stuffed animal crafting extravaganza going on, and she's joining by making an elf and a dragon by the end of the summer. I need to pull out my red cloth for her to use for dragon-makery, but she's making the elf starting from a base of her doll of Agnes from Despicable Me; she snipped off the pony tail and is sewing the hole closed, and has been working on a purple robe/cloak thingum all morning. She also snipped the doll's ears to be small and pointy.

As for me, I am fed and caffeinated and about to retrieve the doggo. Once we're back here, I have an author's rewrite to read through for our next meeting, and need to reach out to another author to schedule a meeting to talk about the rough draft they sent me to review/assess.

That's it. That's all I'm planning for my day, today. I mean, I'm also going to scrub the toilets and try to get the Spawn to help clean up the living room, but I am low energy.

Oh, Fallout Shelter. I downloaded that on Steam last night and have started playing it. I diggit so far. Resource balancing and whatnot.

After I have blown through notifications it is shower time, and then I am heading over to Ms. N's to feed and walk her dog. I will maybe take a picture; his name is Peanut, and I swear the name is longer than he is. Tiny little sweet thing.

I need to be back in time to have my Hangout with +Murphy Jacobs , but hopefully will be able to shove a load of laundry in the washer first.

Other To Dos:
• clean the toilets
• put away Laundry
• scan two things... at the library maybe?
• There was something else here and I can't remember what

I also need to find out what kind of cable and/or software I need to connect my old laptop to the new laptop to see if I can rescue my partially-written Inner Workings sequel. Which, at some point, is going to need a name of its own.

The intro of this also hints at some bigger news which I'll get into later. :)

Good mornthing!

We stayed up till midnight, and got ten hours of sleep. SALM is now indulging in video games, which I heartily encourage after all the crap he had to put up with over the last few days.

Me, though? I've hit the ground running. All my receipts gathered into a pile for sorting/scanning. Child medicated. A dried load folded and put away. A washed load put to dry. A laundry basket retrieved from the porch. A load set to wash.

Now I am erranding. Our bathrooms on scale is from Ikea and is old, and if I step on and off it five times I get five different readings and take the average. I'm kinda done with it. Conveniently, a 20% off coupon came in the mail, so I am hitting Bed, Bath, and Beyond for a digital replacement.

Well, I haven't seen it. I'm sure I can't be the only one.

Spoiler: I've been wanting to see this since its original run, and never got round to it.

Apparently when I took the microfiber
turban towel off this morning my hair was in tight curls against my scalp like Betty Boop. Unfortunately, youngest did not get the chance to tell me this before I shook my head, and therefore shook the curls out. Oh well. Perhaps next time.

Breakfasting ran long because against all expectation both boys woke up before I left, and I had to get them settled. Gotta run to go housecleaning. TTYL.
