Jo Lane3,994Did you not mark your calendars? Shame, shame. Last year +Scott Cramer dared me to sit under my desk at work and share a picture; I did, he reshared and viral chaos ensued ;P It was so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event, so get under your desk (or kitchen table or coffee table), take a pic and post it on G+ with the ridiculously long hashtag #InternationalTakeAPictureUnderYourDeskDay ! And, mind your noggin. Last year some companies even got their whole office involved; along with kids and pets - sitting under your desk is for everyone ;P It's Friday. You aren't really working anyway. Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych449,273It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00161

Good mornthing!

So, I'm not gonna lie - last night? I was kinda bummin'.

Now, don't get me wrong - I earned a great honor, which was confirmed and accorded to me last night. Too, the Zod of Commencement Seating smiled upon me and I ended up seated between my two favorite ladies in the Graduate English Program, which meant there was lots of snark (including comparing one of the speakers, visually, to Emperor Palpatine, and pointing out how much the Mace looks like Thor's Hammer and thence speculation on whether the podium was worthy). Yet when the ceremony was done and we walked the gauntlet of faculty and were released to our family and friends... I was alone.

Now, on the one hand this is very okay. I worked hard, I earned the thing, I did it by myself (in a manner of speaking; no one ever creates something in entire and perfect solitude, but that is a... more »

Good mornthing!

I don't know if it's heat or the swirl of prepubescent hormones, but man all the Spawn have been moodswingy today and yesterday! I cheer filled and reasonabled my way through enschoolenation, and am definitely hitting the store for pickles, tomatoes, and precooked microwaveable bacon so I can make myself a damn good BLT.

I have a meeting with the school today regarding Youngest. I need to get them up to date on having started the lad in therapy, and figure out how to reinforce to them that frequently his acting out when he feels he had been wronged but doesn't think he is going to be listened to. I must also keep in mind that they are trying to manage the daily care and education of several hundred other kids.

A BLT and French press coffee over ice, yesh.

Good mornthing!

The problem with reading part of +Chris Hayes-Kossmann's Rust: Three in the little bit of extra time I scraped up before getting the kids to school is that I always want to read just a little bit more. Part of the problem is having to close the bedroom door and just silently flail because NO NO NO GULL DON'T DO THAT DON'T DO THE THING

Ahem. Rust: Three: http://amzn.to/1TKK6Xc #GEDDIT  - and the two before it.

Me? I'm waiting till my workday is done and dammit, I am reading tonight.

For now, though, I suddenly have a fresh stack of Edit This ASAP from MDP, so I am all with the computeryness and the word wrangling today. I'll pop open a Productivity Hangout, if anybuggy wants one.

Good mornthing!

Today is TACO TUESDAY!!! I should check and see if SALM got us the meat for it. Omnomnom.

Today is also fix parts of my car day; I now have all three wipers and one of the two air filters that need replacing. I also also need to call the car place and push back my tires and inspection to Friday, because Thursday I have a meeting at the school about Youngest.

FYI +Murphy Jacobs I will be late to writing on Thursday. Maybe we can start late on purpose?

I'll be on time today, though! WOO, WRITING THIIIIIIIINGS!

But now: Enschoolention. Zoomzoom!

Dang. If I had the iPhone 6, I would probably get a case like that. Although I do really like how much the one I have looks like a little leatherbound book.

Good mornthing!

Definitely lost like 10lbs. Definitely do not recommend that weight loss method.

Still a but headachey, but I think that might be caffeine withdrawal rather than dehydration. I'm not really feeling up to coffee though; my throat is still pretty tender. Acidic beverage just seems unwise at this juncture.

This morning is erranding, then edits. This afternoon, when. My throat has had more time to warm up, recording the next audio chapter of Bra of Holding for Nobilis Reed; it's something his Patreon subscribers get, so if you want to hear me reading fun and funny erotica, get right on that!

And it makes me want to work on Yarnmen again.

Good mornthing!

I am fully rested and the world is marvelously safe. And will probably get saved again later.

Youngest is home with us, Middlest is with Bestie, and Eldest is with his father. I have some gardening to do today, but first I want to get some weaving done while my hands are still clean.

Right now, I'm just being happy about the email I got from Amazon. It's all, "Based on your recent visit, we thought you might be interested in these items."

And what did it list?

Not bad for $2, especially in light of how much this goes for on ABE Books: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bi=h&kn=handweaver%27s+pattern+book+marguerite+davison&sortby=19&wassortselected=true I have the 1951 revised reprinted without a dustjacket.

A previous owner left a plan for a stole in there! I've only glanced over it, but it looks pretty. And man, the photos are great - all black and white, good contrast to see the patterns of the threads.

SO MANY PATTERNS!

Good mornthing!

I still don't know what was up with my phone refusing to post to public the last few days, but I tried turning it off and and et voila! Here we are!

I put the order in for my various car parts this morning, so early next week you'll see me bitching about unscrewing the glove compartment and wrangling stiff plastic clips in the engine compartment. I will also be delighted because I've saved a hundred bucks doing it myself, which really just means I will be able to actually put gas in the vehicle.

Also, I am using this to justify going to the library sale before heading home to work. Maximum to spend: $5.

I've got to do laundry while I work today, but that isn't so bad.

Hey. Hey you guys. I have been keeping a secret. But I think you should know....

...today is +Andrew Head's birthday.

Mostly I tell y'all to throw cake and rocks at people on their birthdays but if you throw rocks at Andrew I shall stab you.

Andrew is the Paladin of Blisstopia. I have known him for ::mumble:: years and he has been a staunch friend through thick and thin. He supported me through divorce and countless other emotional failings and flailings. He puts up with me when I flake out on conversations because meatspace drags me elsewhere.

He throws himself on trolls like Captain America on that bogus grenade, and I am not sure I have ever known anybody so ready for blood and guts and veins in his teeth if that's what it takes to keep his friends safe and happy.

It's his birthday today, and I have been silent about it all day because I couldn't think of anything to say that felt like it was good enough for him, because even though he argues that it isn't true... he is a good dude, and one of the best friends I have ever had.

Please wish him a happy birthday. My own wishes aren't enough. He deserves all the wishes for the good and the happy, today and always.___

Good afternoonthing!

And apologies to anybuggy who missed the Mornthing post! I posted from Mobile, which apparently decided that I wanted to post to a circle instead of defaulting to Public like I'd expected. Whups.

So here's a bonus post and selfie, in which my hair has apparently decided to go a very Helena Bonham Carter route, which, frankly, pleases me.

I spent all day somewhat on tenterhooks after this morning, waiting for a call from the school; enschoolenation blowups frequently lead to temper imbalance and misbehaviour at school. Call never came, which is a relief. I imagine it is partly due to today being a standardized testing day.

Anyway, this is the breakdown of my car shenanigans:
- The source of the rattle-loud has been identified! As expected, it was the muffler/exhaust system; specifically, the flange that connects the pipe to the front side of the muffler had rotted out. They replaced it, and did an oil change, to the tune of nearly $300.
- My tires are horrifying; the rear ones, anyway. They're sub-1 on the 1-10 scale, and my car won't pass inspection until I replace them. Expected cost: $170 for the tires, $60 for the alignment that I should get with the replacement.
- All the wipers need replacing - 2 front, 1 back - in order to pass inspection. Expected cost: $48.70
- The engine air filter needs replacing. Expected cost: $39.95
- The cabin air filter needs replacing. Expected cost: $61.50

I'll be bringing the car back next week to get the tires done and the car inspected, but... I did some poking around on Amazon, and on YouTube, and if I purchase the parts and do the work myself, it'll only be $45.87 plus time spend to handle the wipers and filters, rather than $150.74. The cost difference there, $104.37, is worth a little over five hours of working time for me. I've replaced wipers before, and while doing the filters is new to me, it definitely looks doable on my own. I'm pretty sure I could get it all done in an hour at absolute most.

...I'm trying to decide if there's really any reason for me to not take on this part of my car maintenance and save the hundred bucks.___

I used to watch figure skating a lot as a kid, with my mom and her mom, but I didn't know the names for most of the moves. Today, linkhopping on Wikipedia after being involved in a discussion of Surya Bonaly on Tumblr, I learned that one of the moves that always makes me hold my breath is, in fact, called the Death Spiral.

Good mornthing!

Due to vomitus, Youngest is at home today. The school has a 24-hour policy about teh pukes, and he did the technicolor yawn late afternoon yesterday. So I'm edit-plugging today with a little dude snuggled under my armpit, watching Pound Puppies on Netflix.

I have to call the car place today and get an appointment to have the thing looked at it. I think something is loose/disconnected somewhere in the muffler/exhaust system. It's gone loud.

I may end up with Middlest home tomorrow; this morning she was complaining of bellyache and a sore throat, and has a little cough. Her temperature seemed fine though, and her cough was a little thick but could be attributed to the weather. Still, I'm planning on pulling together a chicken soup tonight, and hitting her with honeyed tea. If she's still feeling yucky at bedtime, I'm going to see... more »

Today has been largely spent in bed. I even - hugely counter to instinct - spent some time laying down and simply listening to the traffic.

Otherwise, I've been watching-ish Nurse Jackie on Netflix, and working on the Draco shawl.

I borked and had to frog 15 rows.

Anyway, here's Wonderwall.

Good mornthing
Migraine Edition

It feels like someone has taken the Canberra Centennial Sky Whale, pasted rocks all over it, gently inserted it on the left side of the base of my skull, and begun to inexpertly and irregularly inflate it in fits and starts. No outright nausea, but smells and flavors are STRONG.

When SALM got home from the store yesterday, a bucket of chicken livers fell out of a bag onto the floor under the table. Nobody noticed except, it seems, the cat, who manged to worry it open and several livers partway out before so much blood has spilled across the linoleum that it was more trouble than it was worth to her. He was starting to wipe it up and described it as "a crime scene" so of course I looked. And caught a whiff of stale freshly disturbed blood.

I have managed to get some food in me - very well cooked steak cut into tiny bits to manage textural weirdness, and some bacon. I have taken ibuprofen and have coffee with minimal diary in.

Today is being written off as a loss. I might paint something meaningless just to have something to do. I might crochet as long as the light is good, if my eyes will focus on the sock yarn. Mostly, my eyesight hasn't been a problem.

I am not going to attempt to drive, though, which means I have to text +Anthony Deaver to let him know I can't make the game. This blows. I was really looking forward to it. >.<

I can't seem to regulate my temperature yet. Whee.

Today I will edit, and then I will be getting started on a beaded crochet project. I'm going to do the Draco Shawl using the chocolate brown Malabrigo yarn and pinkish Blue Moon beads shown, and trying out the crochet hooks I got from +Happily Hooked Magazine.

I will also muck about in Minecraft just because I can. And assess my cabinets for biscotti makings, because I am out of biscotti! But it was so good! I want more!

I have a skein of chocolate brown Malabrigo sock yarn ( http://amzn.to/1X5GdwT )that has been kicking around for like a year and a half. I finally dropped three bucks on the Draco shawl pattern ( http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/draco-shawl ) and then hit +Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores  where I snagged two hanks of these gorgeous pink-ish beads for 50% off ( http://amzn.to/1Wtrq0F ) because I am going to try crocheting with beads finally, dangit. But I can't find my ball winder.... so here I am, winding by hand. #lollipop  !

Yet when the ceremony was done and we walked the gauntlet of faculty and were released to our family and friends... I was alone.

I worked hard, I earned the thing, I did it by myself (in a manner of speaking; no one ever creates something in entire and perfect solitude, but that is a bigger rumination for another post) and, moreover, for myself. I am very good at being solitary (believe it or not) - I hold that someone, anyone, must be a whole and stable person to the best of their ability in and of themselves. But with everyone peeling off to hug their moms their sisters, their significant others, grandparents, babies... I was alone, and I felt kind of lonely.

I drove home in the dark, mortarboard on the seat beside me, singing along to the best of the 90's courtesy of 92.9 The River. It was a liminal space in which I managed to not think about much of anything, except perhaps to debate myself on one of my seatmates' offer to get me some classroom time teaching (Can we say yes? How about a HELL YES?!). I stopped for gas. When I got home, I sat in the driveway to finish listening to the song, not remembering now what it was, and then gathered my things and went into the house.

...where I was greeted by an enormous banner. (See second picture)

While I was out, the kids all spent time in the basement with paint and markers and a huge roll of paper, making a banner for me. There was also a chocolate and caramel brownie, and freshly cooked bacon courtesy of SALM. Too, Youngest made me a card (see the remainder of the pictures) featuring me (you can tell by the nametag over my head that says "Bliss") blowing up some TNT.

And, despite the fact that it was 11pm, they were recently in bed and still wide awake, and came creeping out in 1s and 2s to get huge hugs and smooches and thank yous, after which they went to bed. SALM and I caught up on the evening, and giggled about the fact that the fancy folder the school gave me does not hold the diploma, but an alumni sticker for my car. We debated over whether the little flecks on the screenprinted scene of the main campus building on the interior of said folder were supposed to be M-birds (because you can't have a landscape without M-birds) or rips in the fabric of reality. I ate the brownie, and the bacon, and poured some St. Germain into a wine glass full of seltzer and had that too.

We saved the world, and then we slept.

This morning enschoolenation dragged a little, and there were spots of temper here and there from the wee'uns, who are unused to staying up quite so late. I gently pushed here, and gave five minutes of stretch-and-sad time there, and soon enough everyone was ready to go. I sat down with them in the living room and thanked them for making me such an awesome banner, and I got a little verklempt; Middlest rustled me up a tissue. I also pointed out to them that they have had less sleep than usual, and that pretty much everybody, when running on less sleep, tends to be more quick to get angry, or sad, or hyper, and asked them to please be gentle and patient today, not just with everybody around them but also with themselves. They were all bright and cheerful once we got to school, so I think they took it to heart.

I was lonely, but I am not alone. I simply have a situation that does not fit the general narrative. My life is nonstandard.

It's also rather wonderful.

I recently got invited by +Happily Hooked Magazine to try out some new crochet needles and all I had to pay was for shipping. It seemed like the price was right, so I jumped on it. They came this week.

There's a full dozen of them, ranging from 0.5mm size to 3.5mm size. I haven't used them yet, so I can't speak for their comfort. I can, however, comment that when I opened the package they smell like an applewood smoked cheddar cheese that I like, and I can also express my disappointment in the 1mm hook. If you look at the second picture, the 1mm hook is in the middle, with the 1.25 hook on the left and the 0.75 on the right. The 1mm hook should be neatly between them in size; instead it is borked. Basically nonexistent. I'll get more use out of this as an awl or a shiv than as a crocheting tool.

This is my Hello Yes I Am Coping With My Pain face. The injury isn't much to look at - I have an inch-long red bruise line that crosses that vein that runs down the top of the foot into the big toe, with a tiny patch of blue bruising around it if you look at it in the right light. Man, it hurts though. Not a sharp and stabbity hurt, but a constant low-grade ache, which ramps up if I am walking around. It gets stabbity with pressure, so I found a pair of flats that don't come up past the first toe knuckle. Technically they're supposed to be slippers/houseshoes, but... more »

I've also got an earache that I am trying to decide if it's residual pressure angst from the weather, or an ear infection, or what.

So today is getting geared around keeping off my feet:

This is good, because it's a Field Trip Day which means big change from his routine, so it was important to start him off on the right foot by getting him to school on time and in a good mood.

And thus the evening was capped with accidental self-injury:

It was time for bedtime prep and stories, but as SALM was still in a long-overdue phone call with his grandmother, I rustled the Spawn into general living room pickup. This was all well and good until I went to pick up something from the table that, as it turned out, was partially underneath the back side of my closed laptop, which promptly slid off the table....

...and landed, edge-first, on the top of my right foot. I did not scream, but Eldest was treated to a really interesting series of pain-swallowing faces before I finally gave in to the tears. I limped to the bathroom, with him offering to support me, because the light there is brightest. My foot at that point had a hard red impact line and some discolouration.

Eldest and Middlest (who came to see what was going on) hit the kitchen and performed great teamwork to get me ice in a baggie with a paper towel wrapped around, and they each got a big hug and kiss of gratitude for their troubles.

Youngest, when he found out what had happened, made sure I had a pillow to put my foot up on during reading time. He also went to the bathroom to get a bandaid, ostensibly for his own knee, and tried to put it on my foot which hurt. like. hell.

At my very strong suggestion he peeled it off and relocated it to my shoulder, so I can still benefit from Bandaid Magic without it actually worsening my pain.

It is not hugely swollen, so I don't think anything is broken, but it hurts like a long slow throb, and moreso when I stand on it.

#StoryFodder

Monowi's peak years were in the 1930s, when it had a population of 150. Like many other small communities in the Great Plains, it lost its younger residents to cities that were experiencing growth and offering better jobs. During the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2; only one married couple, Rudy and Elsie Eiler, lived there. Rudy died in 2004, leaving his wife as the only remaining resident. In this capacity, she acts as Mayor, granting herself a liquor license and paying taxes to herself. She is required to produce a municipal road plan every year in order to secure state funding for the village's four street lights.

Middlest and BG are watching YouTube videos.

YouTuber: something about hipsters, plays an audio clip from Shakira's Hips Don't Lie
BG: Scoffs He doesn't even know what a hipster is.
Middlest: What's a hipster?
BG: It's somebody who takes a lot of pictures around town. Like, a really weird tourist.

Good mornthing!

To those of you who are mothers in any respect - birth, adoptive, long-distance, whose children are small, or grown, or never came to be - I hope that there is some beauty in today, for you. I hope that you are not granted pain by the Myth Of Mom - everyone is individual, and no one's parenting experience fits perfectly to the social narrative.

And that goes double for those of you who have problematic moms; the social narrative today is of enforced, unflattering gratitude to half your ancestral DNA pairing, but some of you have mothers who are abusive, neglectful, or cruel. You are not obligated to be in contact with your mother if it hurts you. You are not. And this does not make you a bad child, and if anybody gives you shit about it you point them at me, and I will be your Internet Mom, because you are good and valued and loved and I am proud of you.... more »

~~~
My Mother's Day, from the mom side of things, seems to be falling somewhat in line with the narrative, and somewhat not. 2/3s of the Spawn Collective are in another state right now, visiting their paternal grandmother and hopefully spoiling her with hugs. Middlest is home, and her bestie slept over, so they with SALM did teamwork and presented me with a lovely breakfast on a tray, complete with a flower. Middlest and bestie put on dresses, too, which is especially interesting because Bestie is really not a dresses sort of girl, but she loves Middlest and lets herself get talked into things. She's also a child of recent divorce, so there's probably a lot going on there under the surface.
In addition to breakfast in bed (which was way less awkward than I thought it would be, since we found the good tray so things weren't woobly and the coffee only spilled once and only a splash) I was presented with a poster, and man, was this a big deal. She handed it to me, told me she felt dopey, and hid her face under the edge of my covers. The front is a giant portrait - of her or me? I am not sure - telling me in the glasses lenses that I will get a flower and food in bed.
The best part is the flip side, though. First of all, look at all the speckle dots. That is a lot of work! And then, in the middle, is the poem:
My mom is like a pen
She is always wrighting hard
My mom is like a pen
My mom is like a storm
Loud & Strong
My mom is like a storm
My mom is like a jukebox
Always full of songs
My mom is like a jukebox
My mom is like a Bee
always Hard working
My mom is like a Bee.
I read it out loud, and then happy leaked out of my eyeholes and I hugged her so tight. I love her so much.
So there isn't much I really have to do, today. I going to make biscotti, which I never got round to yesterday. When I've done that, I promised the girls we can make oatmeal cookies. So today is baking day. We are going to give the new mixer a workout!
And at some point, I will call my mom, who is totally on vacation in Key West.
