Traci Loudin6,119This is an online event! Since we can't give out candy via the interwebz, myself and some writer pals are going to give out some free and discounted ebooks. As of now, I think the count is at least a dozen books FREE or heavily discounted. On October 31st, M. Todd Gallowglas will post all the books to:  http://www.mtoddgallowglas.com/promo-event/ Scifi and fantasy books by these authors will be *discounted or free!*  @106858314406418832122  Traci Loudin (event host) @101389749046867412548  @110052026801749634977  @111052686160519060933  @111047500792106685252  @105442555442281864482  @109008109666778239512  @100265954833343764048  @113260817417939508467  @114486080890799451835  & Joe King @105229472495595582348  @105906027867306495546  @105902439664561190852  (Please also feel free to circle us) Join this event so G+ will remind you when it begins! Halloween Jack's Genre Goody Grab Bag2015-10-31 16:00:0094

Jo Mills3,936Did you not mark your calendars? Shame, shame. Last year +Scott Cramer dared me to sit under my desk at work and share a picture; I did, he reshared and viral chaos ensued ;P It was so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event, so get under your desk (or kitchen table or coffee table), take a pic and post it on G+ with the ridiculously long hashtag #InternationalTakeAPictureUnderYourDeskDay ! And, mind your noggin. Last year some companies even got their whole office involved; along with kids and pets - sitting under your desk is for everyone ;P It's Friday. You aren't really working anyway. Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych467,275It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160

Drunkblog: Boogie Nights

It was a toss up between this and Night of the Living Dead and, while I think Boogie Nights Of the Living Dead would be amazing, it doesn't exist. Soooooooo get your beverages, queue up the film, and patronize the shenanigans at http://www.patreon.com/Drunkblog - we will be rolling on this at 9pm EST!

I will be watching! I will be live blogging! My filters will have been washed away by cheap wine! So remember: #HereThereBeSpoilers

::stage whisper:: The curls are coming baaaaaack.

The leg hurts. Like, woke me up in the night. It's less bad this morning, at the moment. Less pain, more... IDK. Thing.

Enschoolenation is happening, and I am going to stop and get trash bags on the way home. Today is going to be for going room by room, mostly throwing what remains in the trash, and occasional trips upstairs with stuff that lingered too long.

Still haven't figured out where the hell the stained glass window is going. At least I know where the 3x4-foot mirror is going to end up.

Need to remember:

The nice glasses
The mixer
The crock pot
The small slate table (I know where I want it to go but there are boxes there)
The home-canned stuff
The recycling bin

And to sit my ass down and put my leg up regularly.

I really pushed it yesterday. +Lisa Cohen was totally the MVP and did a lot of the carrying up so I did not have to, but I still went up and down three flights of steps at least a dozen times, plus walking around on the stone basement floor. The top of my arch; my Achilles' tendon, the outside of my foot and calf all the way up to the knee. Argh.

I probably shouldn't do any moving stuff but at the same time feel compelled; we are supposed to be completely moved by the end of Sunday. I will probably spend time bringing things to the shed in small, light trips.

Mostly I just want to write.

I don't want to think; I'm bare functionally awake. But the world is moist and temperate, and there are liminal spaces to explore.

The Speculative Literature Foundation's Diverse Worlds and Diverse Writers Grants were launched in 2013 after an initial fundraiser covered the grants for three years. Help us keep both grants going for five more years!

The $500 Diverse Writers grant is intended to support new and emerging writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups, such as writers of color, women, queer writers, disabled writers, working-class writers, etc. — those whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing / publishing process.

The $500 Diverse Worlds grant is intended for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background.

Hey hive-mind, request from +Adam Fromm, who says:

Can someone find me a copy of the complete, uncut clip for Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly"? The version that every source I can find has is the one that MTV played the snot out of, featuring a Native American man who tucks some feathers into his armband, leaps off a cliff, and turns into a red-tailed hawk in an uncomfortable bit of sidelong cultural appropriation. The complete version, however, which MTV aired first for a very short time (possibly only one or two airings), used the Native American footage along with other examples of finding personal freedom through flight—a mechanic becoming a pilot, a boy diving into a lake—which gives the hawk story more of a context and makes it feel less like half-digested New Age nonsense. I have very clear memories of a few of the additional shots, but there is so little online evidence of the long version's existence that if it weren't for one line on the song's Wikipedia page I'd assume I hallucinated it. Does anyone else remember this thing? Does it exist in the world in an accessible form?

It is a really lovely spring day here, in that it is rainy and overcast and cool. The pressure is low, and I want to be flat. I want to slip back into the cocoon of my blankets and pull them up under my ears 1-2-3 and gently bicycle my feet into comfy positions, and doze away the morning to the sound of the train station bell and the rumblehiss of tires rolling on the wet pavement.

Instead, enschoolenation must happen, and I must make it so.

Post-enschoolenation, there is a window in the middle of my day during which somebody from Sears is meant to show up and install the washer dryer unit, or at least find an explanation for why my install attempt didn't work.

Today is also a Writing Hangout Day with Murphy Jacobs, (who I cannot seem to tag in this morning WTF Geeploos?)

Anyway.

The quotation marks around "real life" are deliberately ironic. All life is real life, but this shift is back into the daily, the usual, the mundane, in the wake of more exotic and interesting affairs. The quotation marks around "real life" are deliberately ironic. All life is real life, but this shift is back into the daily, the usual, the mundane, in the wake of more exotic and interesting affairs. Each of us is manifesting our dissatisfaction in particular ways. Youngest had a meltdown last night because his attempt to make a slice of bread bend around his hot dog bun wasn't working because the bread kept breaking. Eldest is simply being argumentative and contrary; I, therefore, am having to exercise a LOT of patience/self-control.

Now he is off to school, and Youngest is slowly waking and will soon go as well. I am breakfasting on chicken tikka masala, which was clearly deliberately purchase and left in the fridge for me. It is my favorite, which SALM well knows.

Sometimes the manifestation of love is quiet yet clear.

I feel motivated in the wake of #porncamp. I have the result of a writing exercise to tart up and submit to Circlet'a Microfictions editor. I also have a character to write about in a genre that, frankly, is not my forte, so I need to figure THAT all out. However, things being how they are the back of the police station is out I cannot simply spend the day writing. The moving is not done, and we are so behind. I am going to have to push it with my ankle to get done in time.

Time for the SMARTS system: a plan that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely, Sustainable.

I don't have an ENTIRE apartment left to move, at this point. What remains:

- a half dozen bags and boxes of mine from bedroom
- SALM's bureau
- 3-4 boxen and a stack of books from the lads' old room
- various art/posters from bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms
- the whiteboard calendar from the kitchen
- cleaning supplies from kitchen (those will come up last)
- 3-ish boxen of books from the basement
- 3 boxen of Xmas stuff
- 3(?) air conditioners
- bikes need to get moved to shed, or at least to back patio
- perhaps 7-12 boxen of assorted things, which need to be gone through and sorted
- some paintings

I cannot and will not attempt to move all this today. What I will plan, with SMARTS in mind, is this:

- I will get the remainder of my things moved up from the bedroom
- I will have the lads assist in what little remains in their old room
- All Spawn will be enlisted in the movement or throwing out of wall art/posters
- I will bring up the calendar and hang it in the kitchen
- I will carry up and shelve the books

If I get through all that, moving the bikes and carrying holiday stuff up to storage is a bonus. I will employ the Pomodoro Method - 45 minutes working, 15 minutes rest. I will take an hour at noon. I will eat lunch and I will write a flash/microfiction - drop interesting phrases or pictures in the comments for prompts, please.

All this is subject to change depending upon how my ankle holds up.

I slept over at #porncamp! (I have coffee and ibuprofen and quiche and excellent reminders to write Sterling Behrens into something.)

Here is me in front of one of my favorite piece of art here.

I am nomming breakfast and listening to Dan Kimmel talk about the Yiddish coding for gay side piece in The Maltese Falcon. it's a little slice of fabulous.

Did you know that a hammerhead shark is made of cartilage and angry fuckyouness?

Tell me an idea for an anthology theme.

It is Day 2 of Porncamp and I am excite! Last night beautiful women told me that the one who was new was prepped for me by being told I am like champagne.

"Really? How?"
"Rich and lush and, y'know, bubbly."
"Fun to have in your mouth at parties?"
"Hee!"
"Too much of me and you have a headache the next day?"

Despite my joking, I loved it and they could see how delighted I was by the comparison. It may be one of the most lovely compliments someone has given me when I wasn't even there.

I have driving to do and must go zoomzoom, but I wanted to drop these pictures here for +Sarah Rios - the eyeshadow and liner are actually both eyeshadow. Both are loose powders from Aroma Leigh cosmetics, apples with a dry wee brush.

As always, follow @callmebliss and #porncamp... more »

Prometheus Unmasked

I just realized! Mad scientist stories aren't about scientists.

The archetypal mad scientist is this guy working alone, making something that's going to prove to the world that he isn't the kook and loser everybody said he was--that's going to show his old teacher and his ex-girlfriend what fools they were to doubt him. He's isolated, obsessed, frantically tamping down all slivers of self-doubt as his creature (or death ray, or time machine, or transmogrifier, or...) fails, is disassembled, is tweaked, tuned, reassembled, while his meager inheritance inexorably dwindles.

The villagers point and mumble behind their hands when he makes his infrequent trips to the Winn-Dixie for cases of ramen and two-liter bottles of Mountain Dew. The only people who seek him out are his creditors, a class of humanity he views with mounting terror.

And then...one ecstatic, terrible, transformative night, genius, foolishness, and miracle come together and his creation acquires an uncontrollable, uncontainable life of its own.

This is not a scientist, people. This is not what scientists do. This, my friends, is a novelist.___#Porncamp

Still don't love the hair, but working on it.

#Porncamp starts today! Are you excited? I'm excited. I get to see several of my favorite Canadians, talk erotica, writing, and small press/self pub. Also, I'll be liveblogging/livetweeting the panels, as will other attendees, so I suggest you follow me on Twitter ( @callmebliss ) and/or start watching the #porncamp hashtag there.

Until Porncamp, though, there's work to do!

SALM awesomely helped me bring some boxes up from the basement last night, and I have four sorted down to two plus two boxes and two bags to go.

Also, must shower/get dressed.

Still don't love the hair, but I don't completely hate it today either. I tried to do interestingness with gel, and I can't figure out if it is thwarting me because it wants to imitate Superman, or +James Cronen. I'm enjoying the tiny deals in front of my ears, at least.

I am being experimental today! I am not wearing the wrap on my ankle, and I am doodlebopping around without the cane. I have taken no meds. We'll see how this goes.

Last night we went to hook up the washer/dryer. Got it all connected, moved it into place, pushed a go-button, and suddenly!!!! ...nothing happened.

I have confirmed that yes there ARE wires connected to the back of the dryer socket. Next step is to determine whether there is power to the socket, which means a trip to the Home Despot for a power-detecting tool.

I am also feeling rather fukkity about all this, so once I have handled that and determined whether there is power but something else is wrong, or there isn't power and so we have to return the grand new unit in exchange for a gas one... I am blowing the balance of my day on heddle-threading.

And maybe the writing I never got to yesterday.

Things Found While Sorting The Basement For Which I Have No Use

One of the first weavings I did. Bamboo fiber, tabby weave. It's like a foot long plus tassels, 6 inches wide, so soft, startlingly good selvedges, and I can't think of a damn thing to do with it.

Sooooo still not loving the hair, but am reminding myself that it is still in the post-snip freak out stage where I look like the ::hand-motion:: aliens guy from the History Channel and I must be patient. And while I wanna do a side-shave, I'm not sure it would rock with the hair this short.

#heyinternetlookatmyfood I am mildly obsessed with the curried chicken salad from Whole Foods. This is my first run at it and it's pretty good. It still needs chives, currents, and crushed peanuts... but yum! And it goes really well with my leftover salad from last night's dinner.

Today's doings! I have to attach the cord to the dryer, and then not attempt to move it into place on my own. I need to spend an hour or two in the basement sorting things. And there's weaving that needs threading on the loom.

There are no Spawn. There are no Spawn until Sunday. SWEET!

(I am sure I will be hella missing them by Friday)

Today hopefully includes hooking up the stacked washer/dryer unit, as long as the dryer cord actually comes today. It was supposed to come by 8pm yesterday and I am wondering if I should bother complaining to Amazon about that.

Aside from that... a Hangout with +Murphy Jacobs maybe? It's been a while. Also, I have heddles to thread.

Also also, I need to spend time looking at pictures of short haircuts. If we have to check me for lice, doing so with ass-length hair seems like a punishment set by the Greek Gods.

Find me pictures of medium to short (shoulder-length and above) haircuts you think would look good on me thankyoupls.

I am now sitting in said car waiting for SALM and Middlest to get down here. Middlest is currently washing the lice killing medicine out of her hair so I can go over her head with a fine-toothed comb in the literal sense. SALM has fed everyone a fine breakfast and is napping. I have water heated up to boiling to put in a bowl for cleansing the nit-comb.

We have yet to check my own hair. I am strongly considering shaving my head again if we find lice because it will be simpler. Or at least doing a drastic short-and-sassy cut.

I've stopped telling my son "that's not a word", but instead say "that's not a word in common usage."

I realized that when my son says:
Comfortability is not important, but rather function.
...that he has, indeed, conveyed meaning and more importantly he has conveyed the meaning he intended to convey.

So while the word is not in common usage, it is a word by my definition of "what is a word."

Also, it lets me get by with words like "gription" which is a synonym for traction in cars.

Have some messy curls and a tongue-in-cheek shirt. And a tongue!

Friday is upon us, and oh my Zod I slept. Except for the pain waking me at stupid o'clock in the morning, I slept straight through from 10pm to 8am.

SALM has a day of running around and travel; first taking Middlest to a well-visit, and then taking her on a train ride to her grandmother's in NJ.

My day? Mostly spending time with my foot elevated. The new washer dryer stacked unit is being delivered in a 4:30-6:30 slot. I need to remember to have SALM fit the hand truck in the trunk of my car so I can bring it back to my parents tomorrow - a trip I need to make there and back before 2pm, because the cable company has a 2-4pm window to come move the cable from downstairs to upstairs.

Sleep came in three hour increments. The first time I woke up, the Tylenol3 was wearing off, so I took another, fit as comfortable as I could, and went back to sleep.

The second time I woke up, two and a half hours later, the pain was so bad I sat bolt upright and made some kind of nose that woke up SALM. I managed to get my wrap off, but had to ask him to put it back on because I kept fumbling it. He got me water and I took an ibuprofen.

Apparently the acetaminophen with codeine is about as effective for my as hydrocodone was after my car accident a decade ago, which is to say... it isn't, really. Apparently my nights are just going to blow for a while.

Today SALM has off for parent-teacher conference reasons, and so he is awesomely doing the driving to drop kids at school so I don't have to.

Walking is harder today. I am glad I set my alarm earlier than usual as a just-in-case.

Eldest has been awesome this morning about fetching things from other rooms so I don't have to. Driving is going to be awkward and awful, but I will do it because I have to.

When the Spawn are enschoolenated I will be parking my ass on the couch and won't move for just about anything, I think.

Maybe there will be writing Hangouts to distract me? Anybody up for it?
