Jo Mills3,913Did you not mark your calendars? Shame, shame. Last year +Scott Cramer dared me to sit under my desk at work and share a picture; I did, he reshared and viral chaos ensued ;P It was so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event, so get under your desk (or kitchen table or coffee table), take a pic and post it on G+ with the ridiculously long hashtag #InternationalTakeAPictureUnderYourDeskDay ! And, mind your noggin. Last year some companies even got their whole office involved; along with kids and pets - sitting under your desk is for everyone ;P It's Friday. You aren't really working anyway. Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych465,188It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160

Drunkblog - Little Dead Rotting Hood

After last week's debacle, the drunkblog is going a dark, probably bloody, and potentially schlocky direction with the horror flick Little Dead Rotting Hood, as suggested by fabulous Blisstopia Patron^1 +Karen Conlin. (I hope that tagged the right Karen; Google is refusing to serve up userpics for me in the plussing popup list, IDFK why.)

New to the Drunkblog? No worries! I have a bottle of wine and a movie that is usually considered some flavor of bad (even cult classics have their flaws) or simply unknown. One way or another, it's something I have not yet seen. So I drink. I watch. And I live blog all reactions, including yelling at characters who are made of the dumb and serving up choice quotes.

Good mornthing!

The air is so humid it feels like I am swimming through it, so I put on my bathing suit.

Actually, the bathing suit is because I am making attempt #2 at helping my father launch his boat. High tide is late morning, today, so as soon as the kids are enschoolenated I am going to boogie over there to help him do the thing.

On the way home I need to hit the grocery store. Eggs, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract. This is my mantra.

Tomorrow is Eldest's 12 birthday. He is having a party with definitely two kids coming but possibly 3 or 4, and the main theme is squirtguns. I belatedly realize that filling up water station buckets is going to be a pain in the ass because, without access to the basement, we do not have access to the switch to turn on the water to the exterior hose.

Looks like I am going to be carrying a lot of buckets of water down 3 flights of stairs today. :-/

But! My big To Do today is the cake. The lad has requested a chocolate cake with vanilla icing, and I have found good recipes for both.

In the face of all this... my throat feels strange. Not the usual headcold coughing pain strange. It feels like it did when I had bronchitis 6 years ago. It feels.... I'm not sure I have a word for how it feels. It feels rutilated, but is not stone. It feels the way a whale's baleen looks. It feels like Stretch Armstrong.

Please let this just be humidity wonk. Please.

I don't know who I'm asking. #APrayerToGerms

Good mornthing!

Strange dreams were strange. In one, I was with the lads looking for a desk in IKEA and suddenly was naked. There is not a lot to effectively cover yourself with in an IKEA. Then instead of IKEA, I was near home, but instead of being my little suburban town it was an amalgamation of Boston and Mystic. I wandered downhill. I found a Dunkin'. It got dark, the lads vanished, and a cousin who is family only by accident of blood and marriage appeared from a nearby building. Something dangerous was happening and I encouraged her to come with me, but her high school best friend appeared and they ignored me to walk away in the wrong direction, in dark wool and fur coats with their hair in perfect tight curls. I had to walk home alone, and it was uphill, and I was naked. At one point the only way up was through a building which had been wide open on the way down, but now there... more »

Something dangerous was happening and I encouraged her to come with me, but her high school best friend appeared and they ignored me to walk away in the wrong direction, in dark wool and fur coats with their hair in perfect tight curls. I had to walk home alone, and it was uphill, and I was naked. At one point the only way up was through a building which had been wide open on the way down, but now there was a closed door every 3 steps. I had to open each one and close them behind me, and the doors and stairs were all wood painted white. By the time I reached the uphill-most door and emerged onto the sidewalk again, the sun was coming up, and the streets were getting busy, and I was naked. The police officer did not notice me, and the pedestrians did not notice me, and Matthew Gray Gubler only noticed me because I warned him that he was going to lose an eye if he kept bouncing a pencil off that public bulletin board while standing so close to it. Then I was in front of a building that was somehow home even though I have never seen it before, and I woke up and was not naked.

IDEFK what any of that means except maybe that I am feeling exposed?

Today:
• enschoolenation
• breakfast
• pay two bills
• bring Eldest's inhaler to the school
• celebrate losing ten pounds by continuing to do the same stuff
• make dough for pizzas
• clean up stuff that has been (ma)lingering on my bedroom floor
• laundry
• writing sprints with +Murphy Jacobs
• pizzas for dinner
• go for a walk or something with SALM
• this Space intentionally left blank

Clue tells me I am coming up on PMS this weekend, which dovetails nicely with the end of school and Eldest's birthday party. My brainspace is weird.

Hi. Are you okay?___

Good mornthing!

Work at Ms. N's today is apparently going to include mending. She asked me to bring blue thread. I went through the basket into which I have been throwing all my various small sewing notions while unpacking, and pulled out pretty much all the blue thread, a pin cushion of pins, a pin cushion of needles, and a small pair of thread clipping scissors. It fills a handkerchief. I am not saying that I have a problem; but I am possibly saying that perhaps I need to be stopped.

Later, I hopefully get to be supermom and help Middlest retrieve her login information for origins so that she can play Sims three.

Later still, more Circular Gallifreyan.

Good mornthing

The van was late yet again, so I drove Youngest to school. We had a lovely time; I had cued up a Wintergatan playlist on my phone to listen to while making breakfast, and he liked it so much that we carried on listening all the way to school and talked about the ins and outs of building new musical instruments.

We were not the only ones doing a late dropoff. As I walked him in, there was an older Asian man walking several kids in. We held the door open for each other, and he watched the kids sign the Tardy list after I signed my lad in and sent him off to class.

Back in the car I sat for a few moments checking notifications. As I did, the man came out and climbed into his truck, which was parked in front of me - and as he did, I saw that he still had a new tag still hanging onto the back of his collar.

I turned on my car and pulled up next to him, waving for him to do the same, and called out, "your shirt still has a tag on."

He misunderstood, and called back, "they are my friend's children, I was dropping them off."

"No, your shirt." I grabbed my own shirt, and he mimicked me, looking puzzled. I reached back and patted the back of my neck. "You have a tag."

He mimicked my gesture again, and his eyes got huge. He popped off the tag, stared at it, and burst out laughing. We laughed together and waved, wishing each other a great day, and I pulled out to head for home.

As I got to the road, though, I realized my neck was kind of itchy, and I rubbed it. I felt something just before I pulled my hand away. A tiny bit of lint? Sand? A flake of skin? I put my hand back and plucked put away to look at, and lo and behold!

A tick.

A teeny, tiny tick no bigger than the point of a pencil lead, sickly green with wiggly little legs. I pitched it out the window, came home, and showered like woah.

I regret, a little bit, pitching it. There was a little pinch when I pulled it off my neck. I'm going to have to have SALM check me for circles for the next few days, because I cannot see the back of my own neck.

Do you believe in fate, coincidence, karma? Higher powers, helpful spirits, guardian angels?

I wonder if I would have found the tick if I hadn't taken the moment to help that man.

Poor Eldest. He feels like crap, still coughing, not sleeping well, but I really can't keep him home from school when he is so behind. So off he went, and Youngest enschoolenated not long behind. The littler lad and I killed time waiting for his van by sorting some of the rocks that SALM and I brought back from Marblehead.

We have a plan for creating a little garden in a particular spot, with a rock walkway and separating lines, and I have this visions of different sections being different color rocks. Which is going to mean lots of sorting.

That is not a task for today, though. I am trying to look at some of the needs I have in front of me, which includes tires for the car and finally getting a proper replacement laptop that can handle all my shenanigans at reasonable speed; I'm going to be putting together a reduced-price Circular Gallifreyan... more »

Good mornthing!

I don't know what my hair is doing. I do not think that it knows what it is doing, either.

SALM and I are getting breakfast and going for a Pokémon walk in a state park, and then coming home and sitting in front of fans to draw and write while it gets muggy with the 80-degree heat and the post-rain moisture.

I said that bit about the fans to him and he said, "well that's not fair. You have the whole of Blisstopia; you have more fans than I do."

"You have me."

"Oh." His face blossomed into a huge grin, and softened into a fond smile directly at me. "I win."

I cannot express how incredibly disorienting it was to be standing on something shapes like the prow of a boat while the water lapped around it and my legs wanted to go soft, to be sea legs gently piston-bending to accommodate the movement of the deck as the waves slid by, except it was the ground and did not move and I became dizzy firmly on the edge of solid ground.

...okay, perhaps I can.

Good mornthing!

After basically 6 hours in the car yesterday for driving the boys to the Spawnfather^1 and back, I got home last night, hugged SALM, was in bed at 10 and pretty sure I was out like a light by quarter past.

I proceeded to have a long night of much dreaming.^2 Now I am up and sipping warmed-up cold brew and watching Criminal Minds while SALM sleeps in. It is chilly and rainy today, so I am not sure what our day will contain^3, but I am super happy to let him sleep in. I haven't bothered getting dressed, but I did my morning ablutions^4 and am pleased by the snuggly warmth of my bathrobe with the windows open on the rainy day.

And some Kitchen Scramble. Lots of Kitchen Scramble this morning. I like that game.

Hi. <3

~~~~~~~~~~
1: Eldest is on a Z-pack (antibiotics) for his upper respiratory thing, and is experiencing the unfortunate fallout in the GI tract that is inevitable with antibiotics; we had to stop at rest stops twice. Plus traffic, because people are still driving to various vacationy places despite the weather. Ah yes, and the weather. Pouring rain, sometimes to the point that I was white-knuckling it at highway speeds.
2: Dreams included being in something that was partly a convention of the +Jeff Mach variety, and partly being inside a video game somehow which was part World of Warcraft and part flash game which, yes, was every bit as bizarre as it sounds, and then part waking up this morning (within the dream) with SALM, starting to plan our day alone together, only to have coitus interruptus before we even started of my brother walking into the room to sprawl on the floor to nap, and then all the children coming home and invading our bedroom as well, and going downstairs to find the Spawnfather on a bed in a room that doesn't exist with his migraine face on telling me that "no, they're yours this weekend." I woke up, reached for my phone, saw it was 7:51, and decided that approximately 10 hours of sleep was more than enough and being awake is less stressful than dreaming.
3: Saving the world, probably.
4: Brushed my teeth and brought up a little bile in the process. #TMI I know, but WTF, gag reflex? I had to brush my teeth (and tongue) again, dammit! Floofed my bedhead a little. Stepped on the scale and discovered that I am 1/5 of the way to my weight loss goal. Am being logical and reasonable about it; I know at some point I am going to plateau, and that I also need to keep in mind the gains/losses of water weight, but that's only ever been 3 pounds in either direction around my anchor weight, and this is more than twice that below the low end of that range, so I am rather pleased.
Good mornthing!
Breakfast experiment is a HUGE SUCCESS! I used the hand shredder like a real adult! Shredded pan-fried hash browns, seasoned with adobo and paprika, topped with some sour cream. Awyiss.
Oh. Mostly success. I need to cook them longer next time, they're still too stickyspongey in the middle.
Anyway, hats off to Youngest who actually tried it even though he didn't like the look of it because it was not cubed breakfast potato, and refused it politely in favor of oatmeal. He is learning the social graces, slowly but surely.
After the boy is enschoolenated, I get to shower and then drive to where Eldest is on a field trip to administer his inhalant and check on him. Then a solid 3-hour clean at Ms. N's, to be possibly followed by another shower depending how dusty/dirty is our task, and then the drive to Spawnfather's.
I had nightmares last night about the drive. About the boys' medication, and being stuck for time, and being late for a very important piece of theater, and +Lisa Cohen was driving my car, and we had a bunch of people in the back seat but then I got into the car to discover that The Missing Stair from the Troybany area had talked his way in and I just lost my shit screaming that he needed to get out and knowing that I had to choose between transporting medication or getting to the important theater event where a lot of people were counting on me and I only only only had time for one not both
And basically I woke up mentally/emotionally wiped. I need hugs.
But I have a bellyful of good food, at least.
This is why people emotionally eat. We are starved for touch, so we feed ourselves another way.
ends post and opens food tracker app to log the breakfast
Good mornthing
I'm kind of uncertain about it, but I am letting Eldest go back to school today. He is going to be required to check in with the nurse twice for inhaler use, and she will be giving him a wee checkup.
Middlest's phone has gone bork. It is no longer taking a charge. It is less than a year old, however, and therefore should still be warranteed by Apple Care.
Youngest is great. Therapy appt. for him today, which means chess with the Doc.
I have a Hangout with +Murphy Jacobs today for wordsing. I will try not to spend the whole thing ranting about how effing frustrating Eldest is.
Apparently this is me now. My life revolves around my kids.
Good mornthing!
I and my coffee and my fabulous bedhead are hanging out on the steps enjoying a moment of a morning that does not feel like a thick wet blanket that has been microwaved. It is so nice.
The younger two are off to school in their various ways. I have to contact Youngest's teacher to give her the heads-up that the lads both slept in the living room last night and he claims he didn't sleep a single minute due to his older brother's coughing.
I am keeping Eldest home and, when he wakes, taking him over to Urgent Care. The temp, the coughing, the runny nose and congestion... it might just be a nasty summer cold, but it could be a sinus infection. The kid is also prone to bronchitis, so.
Therefore, To Do Today:
• sort and stow the stuff at the bottom of the stairs
• listen to and edit my first recorded chapter for the audiobook of the extremely patient +Nobilis Reed 's Monster Whisperer
• type up the fairy tale thing
And that is enough, I think, considering the UC trip will be somewhere in there.
Eldest failed to get up and himself to school this morning so I had to drive him, AND I caught him lying about his homework. ::angerflail::
The younger two kids were pretty good though. Middlest has Field Day today, and only put up minimal stink about my insistence that she wear sunscreen. Good mornthing!
Happy #MugshotMonday, errybuggy.
I had the rude sweet but untimely awakening of Eldest gently tickling my shoulder this morning. "Mom, my alarm clock didn't go off. Mom, I need you to drive me." And also the small matter of Mom I Have No Shorts That Fit. I sent him off to school in a pair of men's shorts I like and my Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy tee shirt, which he was delighted to borrow.
It is going to hit the low 90s again today. I have windows open at either end of the house, and the street-facing windows closed. The door to the 3rd floor is closed too, which will hopefully keep my bedroom from getting sweltery.
Tasks Today:
• go to Savers to exchange the plastic jug I got for making cold brew for a jug that doesn't have a crack at the seal point that blended in until I opened it to wash
• go to the post to mail a thing for SALM and to see if Eldest's mail-order shenanigan has arrived
• figure out a way to rig a curtain at the top of the stairs down to the first-floor door, so that the stairwell does not totally become a chimney roasting the hall and living room
• write, maybe?
• record some Monster Whisper, definitely
• pick up Eldest from school
• take Youngest to the psychopharmacologist
• and if I am really lucky, I will figure out a good safe display space for SALM's grandfather's service flag. I'd had it in the kitchen atop the curtain rod, but now there are curtains.
I'm trying this today, with a bonus addition of cocoa nibs for a little chocolates goodness.
Coffee, Avocado and Banana Smoothie
I know, I know, you’re probably raising your eyebrows at this mix. It’s the coffee and avocado, isn’t it? I must confess, when I first thought about this concoction, I wasn’t too sure about it either. Coffee and banana, yes. Avocado and banana, yes. But coffee and avocado? You just need to drink it to believe it!
Let me describe the flavour to you. Interestingly enough, you can taste all three of them, individually, as well as in symphony. It’s a thick, creamy drink, given the avocado in the mix. Beyond that, there is a very strong smoky flavour, and what’s intriguing, is this comes not just from the coffee, but also the banana. Have you ever noticed a touch of smokiness about the good old banana? Well, in this drink, the coffee emphasizes that aroma.
Caffeine in the drink is a great metabolism booster. Pre workout, it’ll help you get just that much more out of your routines and post, well, we might as well get that metabolism up for as long as we can.
You'll find the 5 minute recipe here:
Good mornthing!
It's a great day for a #mugshot .
So it is supposed to hit 90 today. SALM and I are differing on how to keep the house cool. We are in a 2nd-and-3rd floor apt above an unoccupied 1st floor apt. All the windows down there are closed and have no curtains. In your opinions, should we:
• close all the windows?
• open all the windows?
• close windows and draw curtains in sunny areas, open in shady?
• same as above but also put an outward-facing fan in a window?
• or?
This is our first summer in this place, and all suggestions on how to best minimize our heat are welcome.
Today is going to be a Doing Not Much kind of day, I think. SALM has made breakfast for everyone. I need to take the tent down in the backyard so Middlest's godmother can borrow it.
Laundry will get pushed through.
