Jo Mills3,992Did you not mark your calendars? Shame, shame. Last year +Scott Cramer dared me to sit under my desk at work and share a picture; I did, he reshared and viral chaos ensued ;P It was so much fun that we decided to make it an annual event, so get under your desk (or kitchen table or coffee table), take a pic and post it on G+ with the ridiculously long hashtag #InternationalTakeAPictureUnderYourDeskDay ! And, mind your noggin. Last year some companies even got their whole office involved; along with kids and pets - sitting under your desk is for everyone ;P It's Friday. You aren't really working anyway. Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych475,537It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00161

Good mornthing!

Parking lot selfie, as proof that I finally got out of the house and did something alone in a public place. Granted, that thing was returning cans, and just as I was finishing up the doors slid open behind me and a man came in. My heartrate is finally pretty much back to normal, but it startled me.

Now, he's totally not the guy from Sunday. He was clearly just there to return cans. He didn't menace me; didn't even acknowledge me. Plus he was no taller than I am and half as wide, and if I had to I probably could have taken him.

This is all rational, reasonable stuff. Things I recognize with my smart, deliberate, thoughtful brain.

But at first it was just Sudden Unexpected Presence Of Stranger, and the irrational part of my brain, the preservation all part, the instinctive learning-from-recent-event part... That part threw a bucket... more »

mornthing

I don't normally get up as early on a Sunday as I did today, but there were doings to be done - which is to say, SALM is headed to Jersey to help out his mom for a few days, because she's having knee surgery, so I needed to drop him off at the train station.

I caffeinated, and I hit the grocery store, and now it is time for cookery. I've pulled down the crock pot, in which I am going to slow-cook a batch of coconut chicken soup.

I definitely forgot to get a can of chicken broth while I was at the story, but guess how much I actually give a crap? >.>

I can pull the chicken flavr'd powder from one of my ramen packs and use that to make broth, I suppose. That works well, actually, since I want to use the noodles from a ramen pack to make a cheesey lemon pepper pasta quick-recipe thing I saw in gifs on the Tumblrs.

Accidental fortuitousness for the win.

Aside from that, today will include a shower, some laundry-folding, and a whole bunch of weaving. I am suddenly very motivated to zoom through this project to get it off the loom because I have realized that there is literally no reason for me to not try weaving a scarf for SALM.

Anybody want to Hang while I'm doing food prep?

Went on a Pokèwalk with SALM tonight. Guided him through using a Lucky Egg.

We walked along the length of sidewalk where the incident took place last weekend. I felt - still feel - nauseous, to the extent that at one point I had a rather awful burp. My back feels as if someone with many strong hands reached through my flesh, took hold of all the muscles down one side of my back from collar to waist and just squeeeeeeezed, and still hasn't let go.

Irrational Brain got panicky. Wanted to run away.

Rational Brain pointed out that I am fine. I was with SALM.

That didn't loosen my back or make me feel less sick, but I won the war of my brain. Did not panic.

Tea before bed, I think. And I have put a Pokèmon in a Gym for the first time, so that was neat.

mornthing

Stayed up late and slept in, because we could. I continue accompanying SALM on his watchthrough of Burn Notice, and we are now up to the point where they start working with Jesse.

I am posting from bed, but I swear I got up. I brushed the flocking off my teeth, and ascertained that Youngest is happily curled up in my chair watching Curious George. I gave the ferret his medicine, and his vitaminsquish and water, and let him run around Middlest's bedroom. Then I put him away and picked up the poop and sprayed the pee spot with Lysol. Poor li'l guy. He is old.

What will today involve? Definitely a Pokèwalk once Middlest and Bestoe are here. Possibly several. Probably some weaving. Undoubtedly some grocery shopping.

Maybe we'll save the world. Hopefully I won't cry.

Do want!

Having a hard time talking to a partner about breaking the routine in the bedroom? This map of human sexuality lays out fetishes and sexual interests over a landmass, allowing you to stick a pin on the places you've been, places you'd like to live and places you're keen to visit -- and maybe even cross out places you never want to think about again!

A clever way to turn a fraught conversation into a fun activity. Oh -- and the map comes with a glossary, just in case you don't know all the lingo (don't feel bad! I didn't know a lot of it the first time I used the map, either! Also, people are fascinating. It's a lot less weird to bring up your sexual interests when the map has at least 80 far, far weirder things on it 👌👌👌).___Do want!

- Paying those bills wiped out bank account, gas in car is super low, supposed to drive to Spawnfather's tonight
~~ there's $9 in purse, $2 on nightstand, and $6.42 in change in the change bucket. That should be enough to get gas in the tank to get there and still cover tolls. Worry, but not too much.

- Grad student loan bill is in 2 weeks

- Grad student loan bill is in 2 weeks
~~ Unless Spawnfather's severely underplays support again (because still unemployed), that plus money from current editing gig plus money from recent voice recording gig should cover it

- But what about the next undergrad bill?
~~ sigh will figure this out. Will write up a brief précis of skills, education, experience; will post that many places offering self for editing, copy editing, proofreading, etc.

- Feel bad about telling awesome person I can't beta their book, even though it is in a series I love, because I can't afford to do for free what I do for work
~~ Oh my Zod get over it, you already told them and they said to totally never do for free what you do professionally

- But...
~~ No.

- Have new editing task in front of me.
~~ ...not a problem, actually. Down payment has been made, book is already known to be interesting, and author is known to accept edits and critique from me with grace.

- Have to make a phone call today.
~~ Yes. Yes you do.

- To a lawyer!
~~ Yes. And you will breathe deep to keep your heartrate down. Have a tissue on hand in case your eyes leak. And remember that this is for the good.

....that actually helped a lot to write all out. Like the Nightmare Fuel project - it gets things out of my head where I can look at them.

Speaking of the NF project... It is nearly time! We begin in 8 days. Are you ready?

I am.

The season is changing. Mabon marks the time of harvest - gathering, feasting, abundance. It also marks the time when I switch to Autumnal perfumes. Sadly, my favorite combination will be soon suffering from a lack of abundance. Jack & the Devil, and Harvest Moon (pictured in the second photo), are both from Solstice Scents. J&tD is below the label, now. Its profile of caramel sweetness and spiced wood combines perfectly with the pumpkins, apples, and woods of HM. Bring on the chill and hand me my shawl - I am ready to revel in the culmination of my works and watch the world go dark. #solsticescents #autumn #fall #perfume #perfumeoil #youwishyousmelledlikeme

That part threw a bucket of unnecessary adrenaline down my tubes.

This is what PTSD is. This is what it does. It is not my rational mind saying "that one guy (and his friends) tried to do something to me, and made me afraid somewhere I thought I was safe, therefore all men are a clear and present danger to me," because rationally I know that isn't true. I have so much wonderful evidence to the contrary. No, PTSD is the irrational part of the brain asserting control to preserve my one-person system of body and self, insisting "it happened once where you thought you were safe, therefore it can happen anywhere that you think you are safe. It could be any man you don't know in any place that you think yourself alone and safe."

It is my irrational brain trying to protect me, to keep me safe, and thereby making every place feel unsafe.

I hate it, because that pushes me toward someone I do not want to be. I do not want to be constantly vigilant - aware, certainly, which is why Sunday wasn't an even worse incident, but not vigilant, not constantly on high alert, guarding against all possible threats regardless of probability. I don't want my first reaction to any potentially awesome person I meet to be one of irrational, reactive fear that isn't even their doing.

My rational brain totally knows, not all men. But my irrational brain butts in first and insists, potentially all men.

I want to be my best self, and I don't want that fear, that self-protective irrationality, to be a driving part of my self. I love people. That is how Blisstopia had come to be, and that is why I will not be getting a gun, or a mace - either kind - in spite of well-intentioned suggestions. Blisstopia has a reclining army, recall. We stand down and ask questions and act through thoughtful compassion.

Once upon a time I latched onto the litany of fear from Dune, and I am going to spend some time meditating on it today. Maybe by way of shitty calligraphy.

Fear is the littledeath. Not the petite mort, which I would gladly die repeatedly unto the end of days; no, it is the death of the thousand cuts, carve and slicing and snipping away my sense of safety, my capacity for joy. Fear cuts off the opening to myself by which I let the Other in and find how we are the same, and revel in or differences. Fear pares down my energy, slashes my ability to be vulnerable.

Fear makes it hard to love, and without love, much love, many loves big and small and in between... Without that, there is no Bliss. Fear will make me Not Me.

I don't want that.

So I am talking about it, and it is hard. But it is true, for me, for right now.

I am afraid. I struggled to just go out, today, and I was afraid again. A car honks outside my house, and it had nothing to do with me, but I jump. I keep checking the locks.

I keep checking the locks.

But I still want to let you in.

So... I went to the store today, and it was kind of a big deal for being such a little thing. And I was afraid, but I am not letting the fear steal my smile.

Here is my selfie. I will still be me, dammit. This is proof.

Fun fact: If there is not enough space given beneath a problem for doing the math, because the provided space is wide but not tall... there's totally NO RULE against turning the paper sideways to use the space more efficiently.

I'll bite on this thing; there's n interactive meme going around where people post three fictional characters that describe themselves. I've poked around and picked three that I think suit me really well. Before I post them, though, thereby muddying the waters of your perception.

What three fictional characters do you think describe me?

Mornthing

I got the enschoolenation done and ensconced myself in the basement for a while. I needed to get out of my head.

I wove well over a half a foot, and watched two episodes of Criminal Minds while I did it. I continue to have feels for those make believe people. I continue to be pleased at how well the evenness of my beating is coming out, and how my selvages are drawing in less and less. Once this piece is done and off and bound and washed, it's going to be a really lovely piece. A wide scarf, maybe. Or a table runner. Both, if whoever buys it is adventurous with their floating definitions of item identity.

I cooked some tasty goodness; leftover chicken ripped into strips, pan-cooked with rosemary, paprika, ginger, garlic, and black pepper, with a splash of lemon juice and some mixed veggies, all over brown rice. Technically I made two servings, but... more »

I slept poorly and nightmared again. I don't like waking up tired. Like, what was the point of all that prone unconsciousness, otherwise?

Enschoolenation went well. Eldest and I had a talk about needing to find a common understanding for homework expectations so that he doesn't feel nagged and I don't get anxious. Youngest has his first lesson with the new trombone today, and he's super excited about it. Middlest has chorus, and loves it.

Me? I'm going to head downstairs after I make this post, and record an episode of Bra of Holding for +Nobilis Reed.

After that, I'm going to call my dad to see about him introducing me to his lawyer.

This afternoon, I have a meeting for the literal purpose of meeting someone face to face at Youngest's school.

I may be taking pictures of some random fiber art projects that I have, which are completed but just sort of sitting around. I need to sell them off.

Mornthing

I'm tired. My eyes are burning even though I haven't cried since yesterday. I slept poorly; my dreams were vivid, nightmarish, and sometimes both. I still haven't eaten. I've been drinking a lot of water, so I know that the headache I woke up with isn't dehydration. It might be a caffeine-dep headache. I have coffee in the french press.

I need to figure out what to do with my day. I need to find a balance for what needs doing versus what I can actually handle.

• Dishwasher emptied
• Sink emptied into dishwasher
• Eldest laundry washed and dried
• Youngest laundry washed and dried
• My laundry folded and put away
• Shower
• Go to the PD to speak to the Chief in person to tell him how great his officers were yesterday
• Figure out what to do with the information I now have about myharasser

• Figure out what I even want out of the situation at this point
• Record another episode of Bra of Holding

Some folks have been reaching out to me privately since yesterday. That helps. Thank you.

Some folks want to help and don't know what to do. So many of you are just so far away, what can you really do? That sensation of helplessness is frustrating.

What you can do is this: Do not catcall women. Do not harass them on the street. And (this is the harder part) stand up to your friends, like Neville Longbottom did in the first Harry Potter book, and insist that they cut that shit out, if you're with someone who tries something like that. Be like Neville Longbottom. #NevilleIsOurKing___

Sunday Street Harassment

TL;DR I got honked at and almost accosted by a group of drunks on the way home from a football game, but am physically fine yet emotionally shook up.

Some drunk jagoffs on the way home from the Pats game thought it was funny to circle the block several times, honking as they drove by me as I was having a nice walk on Main Street, and then pull over, get out of the car, and try to sneak up on me. For what, I don't know, because I have decent situational awareness and turned to face the guy and he shook my hand and laughingly apologized for his drunk friends in the car (himself smelling like a brewery). The driver called out to him, "Aw man, you were so close!" I don't know what he was trying to do, but clearly he didn't do it. He got back in the vehicle, and they pulled a yooie and headed off up the road.

I had the presence of mine to note the license plate, and used Siri to record it in my phone, because my hands were shaking too much to type. I went down to the lake to calm down, and then went to the Sharon police station.

Because I had the plate number, color, and type of vehicle, they were able to pull up in the system the license of the guy who owns the car; it was the guy who had gotten out and tried to sneak up on me.

The cops in his town are going to go knocking on his door tonight, and he's going to be instructed to call the station here, where the officer to whom I spoke is going to put the fear of God into the man.___

Good mornthing!

No D&D game today, apparently, which on the one hand is a bummer, but on the other hand I'm glad to not be getting back in the car after all the driving yesterday.

Lazy Sunday is mostly going to be lazy; I think I might spent some time squatting in the basement weaving, which I haven't done in a while First, though; I'm going to shanghai SALM into helping me haul the cabinet up to the boys' room. I can set them to sorting out their big stupid plastic bucket of useless mess toy bin into what they want to keep, in the cabinet, and what is old/broken/too young for them and therefore ready to be donated/thrown away.

I am also going to have A Talk with one of my children, because according to browsing history it is definitely time. >.>

Now that it is in the Birthday Girl's possession, I spoil nothing by posting pictures! I knit my niece this shawl as part of the present for her fourth birthday.

Pictures also include: Lilycakes hugging Middlest a thank you for the Socktopus stuffie she handsewed her; Youngest contemplating the possibilities offered by a Rapunzel LEGO set; and Youngest and Lilycakes trying out the skiing princess setup they then created together.

Today was a good day, y'all. SO good. All the kids were totally well behaved. They played together. They shared. They are too much cake. They did hide-and-seek. And I got to hang out with family, and chat, and play with a baby, and enjoy myself. Good mornthing afternoonthing!

Proof of life: not dead! Just in Connecticut.

It is Lilycakes' 4th birthday party, and I road tripped with the whole Spawn Collective. The drive wore on them a little, but they mostly didn't have meltdowns despite the heat and the disagreements about what music to listen to.

This is my only To Do for today.

Okay, I love this? I want a whole series of novellas or an anthology of short stories in a world where this is real? And that's what the Moon looks like? And and and and and?

( Via +Amanda Rachelle Warren )

16 September 1835, #onthisday the newspaper “New York Sun” had to acknowledge publicly that their revelations about the alleged discoveries of life on the moon by the renowned British astronomer Sir John Herschel was a canard. The Great Moon Hoax was over.

The first two years of the penny paper “The Sun” of New York were anything but successful and their idea to supply the public daily with news so cheap that everybody could afford them did not really catch on at first. Then Richard Adams Locke took over as editor and thought that something must be done about it and when Sir John Herschel set forth to the Cape of Good Hope with his 21’ long telescope to chart the Southern Skies and the illustrious “Edinburgh Journal of Science” brought an article about it, the scion of the “Father of Classical Liberalism” John Locke came up with a very bright idea: posing as Dr Andrew Grant, the made-up sidekick of Herschel, he decided to spice up the boring scientific reports with a bit of drama and elaborate on the tall tale of Franz von Paula Gruithuisen from Munich who had claimed to have discovered moon men and their buildings in 1824.

Good mornthing!

Y'know, I would be a totally awesome dwarf.

Bonus pictures: the duck at the Lake yesterday. We named her Waldo. IDK what is up with her beak - SALM thinks turtle, which seems a fair guess.

The throat is still angry today; I think it might be the air conditioner that we run in the bedroom, so today I am going to run it during the day and then shut it off before we go to sleep.

Man, I crashed last night. SALM makes a good pillow, real talk.

There is so much to do and I don't want to do any of it. Dishes, I guess.

AFTER the garlic rosemary eggs. Which may be a successful omelette.

Words. I will put them in order. Flash sprint Hangout today?

When you wake up feeling like you have been gargling thumbtacks, the only thing for it is a big dose of Fukitohl.

I am hearing water for a pot of Throat Coat tea with honey.

I am making myself an egg and toast.

I will clear up breakfast things and run the dishwasher.

I have sorted and put away all the socks.

And... That is it. Idk what to do with myself today, but I really need to chill. Watch some Netflix horror and browse stock photos for cover art things, maybe? A silent Hangout? Idk.

IDK.

AdBlock Plus will start selling ad space - but you can still opt out
Ads sold via them that they deem "acceptable ads" will be shown. The thing is they let you opt out of that... but 90% of users don't since that setting is enabled by default when you install the extension. So... just turn that off and for now you still won't get ads even if sold through them.___JFC LOLwut

So I downloaded a game from Big Blue Bubble today. They are a fun game company; you might know some of their other work, like Thumpies or My Singing Monsters or Burn the Rope.

This one is Invaders From Uranus.

It is basically Asteroid (heh, ASSteROID) except your ship doesn't move. It's a mission to Uranus. You have to wipe out Danglors.

Poops! In! Spaaaaaaaaace!

Also, cows. And toasters. Your guess is as good as mine, which is that it is a call back to some super old-school Mac screensavers.

Also, there is a song in a Rusky accent. I say Rusky because it isn't Russian so much as it is the accent someone would put on trying to sound Russian if their only point of reference was 1980s movies.

Also! The pew pew and explosion sounds? Someone making the noises by mouth.

Good mornthing!

Not only was today a post-Spawnfather weekend (those tend to throw Youngest off his game for at least a day before going and coming home) but the transportation van that normally takes Youngest to school didn't show up this morning. I ended up driving him in and then giving them a call. Despite all this, the lad was in really good spirits when I dropped him off, which was a really pleasant surprise; the kid is very tied to his habits and routine, and so things that deviate from that usually get him edge and a little aggressive. He seemed to look on it as an adventure, though; I think it helped that he got to spend the drive teaching me about Pokemon ("Mooooom, it's not "Pokemons!' Just like the plural of 'sheep' is still 'sheep,' the plural of 'Pokemon' is 'Pokemon!'")

Eldest has learned an important lesson about what happens in Middle School when you don't write down your homework... which is to say that you forget that you even have it until the end of the weekend, and then you forget which math problems you were supposed to do. I had him at least do some math problems anyway, and encouraged him to make sure he starts writing down his assignments right away, to reduce his stress about assignment forgettings.

Middlest has discovered that the reason her dad and I keep encouraging her to put things in the same place every time is valid, and not just 'cuz we're mean or controlling. She tried to head off to school wearing her father's bike helmet instead of her own, which she could not find. I stopped her, and produced her helmet from her room, reminding her that if she always keeps it with her bike then it will always be right there when she needs it, and the helmet sized for her is MUCH safer than the one sized for an adult.

They are all ensconced at school, and I am sorting out my day/week.
• Print out contract for use of previously recorded audio
•• ...and sign it
•• ...and mail it
• Dig out files for two anthologies that have been languishing
• Make sure they're appropriately edited, laid out, ready to go to proofreaders
• Find suitable art for covers for both of them
•• Briefly consider asking folks about interest in cover artistry
•• Remember that the per-anthology art budget is only $25, and nobody's gonna do the job for that
•• Start poking through stock art sites
• Tea. Because seasonal change, throat scratchies, and the threat of sniffles
• Put another layer of paint on the front of Youngest's birdhouse
• Spend 1 solid hour (or two half hours, or three twenty minute sprints) writing.
•• ...in a Hangout, maybe? Anybuggy up for it?
• Take Youngest to the thrift shop to hunt up a zip-up hoodie
• Leftovers for Dinner
• Keep kiddos occupied so SALM can homework.

Looks like I've got a pretty full day ahead of me. Whazzap, Ploos? Anybuggy up for a Hangout in a little while? Write stuff? Kill blockages? The family business?

Good mornthing!

I now have a phone that can run Pokemon Go, so.... yes! Tips? Tricks? What do?

Sunday SUNDAY Sunday! The world is safe (and will be resaved in a little while), and SALM has acquired bacon with which to feed us. I made the coffee happen.

Today is not intended to involve much. I have a new contract in my email to print and sign, which I will do, and throw it in the mail tomorrow. I have some knitting. I imagine there will be some combination of Burn Notice or Criminal Minds watchery.

And I promised Middlest I'd help her get Pokemon Go set up on her phone, and we'll go for a creature-catching walk. It should be a good time.

I also weeded out a bunch of old makeup, and am trying to centralize what is left; it has tended to be spread amongst 3 or 4 random boxes and drawers throughout the house. Makeup-wearing peoples, how do... more »

Good mornthing!

A full night's sleep is a beautiful thing, and I totally can haz.

We're kicking off the day (post coffee-making, dish-putting-away, and ferret-medicating) with some Burn Notice, after which I need to wrangle some clothes and go do errandythings that include setting up a piece of tech that was unexpectedly gifted to me.

Later... some kind of party thing with some of the folks from SALM's work, maybe?

Also, knitting.

Good mornthing!

Enschoolenation has really hit its stride this week! I am pleased. And if Middlest forgot her Students Taking Academic Responsibility folder again... well, it gave me a chance to have a chuckle with the ladies in the office over the irony, when I dropped it off.

It's Friday! It's a Driving Lads To The Spawnfather day, which means mostly my day is going to be spent on doing some laundry for them so they have clean clothes, and tidying up the living room so that SALM can come home and chillax instead of coming home and cleaning, or being uncomfortable in untidyness.

I also want to spend some time writing; I have a few Calls For Submission that I am eyeing with interest. Is anybuggy interested in a Writing/Productivity Hangout?

I got a message in my Jobhunting email this morning from someone who thinks my resume is impressive! And wants to talk to me about jobs in IT. Nnnnnno? I mean, I could, and it would be a paycheck, but... not the direction I want to be going with my career at this point. But paycheck. But. But but but.
