The rate of death from terrorism in the United States was higher in the early 1970s than it is today. And since 2002, more Americans have been killed by right-wing American terrorists than by Islamic terrorists. It’s true that the rate of violent crime went up between 2014 and 2015, most likely a consequence of the retreat of active policing since Ferguson. But it’s a small uptick in the context of the massive downward trend since 1992.

Futurama now. I want those eyes, chloroplasts, iridocytes, and a network of vessels to catch the glucose. Who will do it for me? How much more will gills cost? Will I look good with them? Sexy? Can you see it? One second I'm green and fuzzy looking, the next, purple and shiny with "W" eyes, slurping up your goldfish before you can say "Jack Robinson."

Cephalopod Pupils

Octopus and other cephalopods seem to use colour, including in some cases to match their skin colour and pattern to their backgrounds, and yet they only have a single-type of monochromatic photoreceptor in their retina. Other animals, like us, perceive colour thanks to photoreceptors tuned to different frequency ranges of light. In the past researchers have proposed that mechanisms in the skin of cephalopods may detect colours, but only one type of opsin has been found in the skin, even via the recent octopus genetic sequencing effort, nor has a method of filtering that single known opsin response been found.

UC Berkeley graduate student Alexander Stubbs and others believe that they have a possible answer; the strange dumbbell, u- and w-shaped pupils of cephalopods may be used to allow light to reach multiple areas of the retina simultaneously, to create a blurred image with chromatic aberration or colour fringes which can be interpreted by the cephalopod to perceive colour at the expense of sharpness.

“We propose that these creatures might exploit a ubiquitous source of image degradation in animal eyes, turning a bug into a feature,” Stubbs said. “While most organisms evolve ways to minimize this effect, the U-shaped pupils of octopus and their squid and cuttlefish relatives actually maximize this imperfection in their visual system while minimizing other sources of image error, blurring their view of the world but in a color-dependent way and opening the possibility for them to obtain color information.”

Video (YT ~4 mins.): https://goo.gl/7QeiyC

[...]
As a specific example, we constructed a computer model of the visual system of cephalopods (octopus, squid, and cuttlefish) that have a single unfiltered photoreceptor type. We compute a quantitative image quality budget for this visual system and show how chromatic blurring dominates the visual acuity in these animals in shallow water. We quantitatively show, through numerical simulations, how chromatic aberration can be exploited to obtain spectral information, especially through nonaxial pupils that are characteristic of coleoid cephalopods.

He made headlines Sunday for tweeting that PizzaGate — an unfounded conspiracy theory that Clinton aides are operating a child sex ring out of a pizza parlor — “remains a story” until it’s “proven to be false.”

The spectrum of nutball on the right is characterized by Tea Party types and on the left, worshippers at the "Altar of Whole Foods". But it's not difficult to see why the normal people on each side mistake the narrative of the other side.

Why? Because of Google's popularity ranking.
If you use a social network graph to represent sentiment (popularity) and frequency (social power), you can see how a particular bit of news is pushed to the top of a popularity list.

Conflict will drive it even further upward with both groups fighting over the topic. To the extent the far left and far right topics are of interest to the middle ground person, it becomes visible. I have to admit that my anecdotal experience shopping at Whole Foods for a sick neighbor shaped my opinion. They have special foods for eveny conceivable reason. No matter how innocuous the substance, there is a "healthy alternative" that doesn't contain fearsome ingredients. Water for instance.

This guy's vote counts. Yours doesn't.

In less than three weeks, Republican and Democrat electors across the country will gather in their state capitals and make their formal — though symbolic — votes for president and vice president. Among them in Missouri will be Republican elector Tim Dreste, a former militia organizer and anti-abortion absolutist who in 1999 was found liable in federal court for making threats to "kill, assault or do bodily harm" to abortion providers.
...
(From embedded link:)
The defendants, two anti-abortion groups and 12 individuals, including Dreste, were not charged with any of the 40 clinic bombings or seven murders that took place in the U.S. between 1983 and 1999, but they were accused by two abortion-rights groups and four abortion providers of setting off some of that violence through the use of Web sites, literature and posters. Dreste, in the middle of it all, was implicated in highly coordinated campaigns and conspiracies that the court found to be "true threats" not sheltered by the First Amendment. ___Here's your Electoral college.

Some early insights from my factsquad.com fake news collection study (less than a day old):

- No obvious trolling on the form so far
- So far, responses tend to split pretty evenly right-wing, left-wing
- Some fake news is horrifically depraved
- Some fake news is sourced from sites that are already flagged by Google as malware infested
- Considerable meta-confusion by users is evident. In one case, a user has reported (as falase) an ABC News story saying Clinton won the popular vote, pointing to stats at a Snopes link. At first glance, due to rather poor layout by Snopes, the page does appear to give stats that match the users' (incorrect) assertion. This argument is specious and disingenuous. Pregnancy and childbirth are both far more dangerous to women than medical abortion is, with a tremendously higher rate of death¹, injury, and disability. Any woman who suffers any of those outcomes is obviously harmed, as is her family. Any woman who wants but is unable to get a safe, legal medical abortion because of political or terrorist actions by anti-choice activists is harmed by being forced to go through with a pregnancy she did not want and may not survive.

As for ‘threatening the lives of women and families,’ no legitimate pro-life activist has ever harmed any pregnant woman.

Well, not directly at least. But Sullenger is being disingenuous in the extreme. “Pro-life” Anti-abortion activists don’t target pregnant women; they go after the clinics and doctors that provide services to those women. And one of those “legitimate” activists who has been convicted of plotting an attack on an abortion provider is none other than Cheryl Sullenger.

¹ Medical abortions in the US result in about 1 death per 7-8 years, making abortion literally thousands of times safer than pregnancy.___

Can we please call whatever news filter we end up with the "Rhinegold Filter" in honor of Howard? The logo would have to be colorful like one of his jackets. ;-)
I'm not sure who originated the phrase, but Howard is the model most of us use who use the term in our teaching.

Just leaving it here.
It would be nice if 70,000 Evangelical preachers in the US would denounce violence among their own.

I've been #podcasting  4 years now. Here are some recommendations I have for new podcasters. I hope it helps. I'll probably update this from time to time.

Long, but good. Lots of perspective on the origins of the phrase and how to use it appropriately if necessary.

A good article on the connections between well funded misinformation organizations and Trump's team.

Excerpt: "I could fill this newspaper with the names of Trump staffers who have emerged from such groups: people such as Doug Domenech, from the Texas Public Policy Foundation, funded among others by the Koch brothers, Exxon and the Donors Trust; Barry Bennett, whose Alliance for America’s Future (now called One Nation) refused to disclose its donors when challenged; and Thomas Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, funded by Exxon and others. This is to say nothing of Trump’s own crashing conflicts of interest. Trump promised to “drain the swamp” of the lobbyists and corporate stooges working in Washington. But it looks as if the only swamps he’ll drain will be real ones, as his team launches its war on the natural world."

Good links and stories that bring together the man's story. For those that think a group of doctors couldn't be nuts, it's proof you can find nuts in unexpected places. Rich links.
