Is there a shortage of Computer Science/STEM grads here in NZ? We always hear about this issue from a US perspective, but what about from a NZ point of view? I know there is a big push lately to "upscale" the high school computing class, with new NCEA standards that are more about programming/CS than "how to use Word".  But is the job market ready for all these new grads?  Would love some insight.

My young son is doing a 20-hour fast to raise money for the hungry children of Bangladesh.  He knows how blessed he is to have enough to to eat, and though 20 hours is long time to fast when you're a growing boy, he's hoping his effort can make even a small difference to the lives of other young boys (and girls) in Bangladesh.  He'd really appreciate your support!

In our local paper today, there was a story about traffic around schools and it said:  "Police are reminding drivers a permanent 40km/h reduced speed threshold remains in place within 250m of school boundaries."   What??  I've never heard this before, as a blanket rule. I checked the road code and it only mentions that if there is a School Zone 40 sign, then the limit is 40km/h ... but no mention at all of a 250m school boundary permanent reduced limit.  Does any one know when this came into effect?  Or did the paper misquote the police?

That's the new entry level requirement for students wanting to go to university"  NO! NZHerald, that's not correct.  According to the report,

* In 2013: 79.2% achieved Level 3 and 70.6% achieved UE.
* In 2014: 78.6% achieved Level 3 and 58.3% achieved UE

Yes, UE now requires Level 3, but you can see from those numbers that a very large number of students who got UE in 2013 also got level 3.

This is why I think the rules around school bus stops in NZ are inadequate.  In the US, drivers must stop for a stopped school bus dropping off children when it's flashing its lights.  Here, you have no quick/easy way of knowing if a bus is stopped because it's dropping off or stopped temporarily for some other reason.  And in a 100k zone?  Good luck getting folks to slam on their brakes just in case ...  I've been almost rear-ended on SH2 when I slowed down for a stopped bus before.

I really hope that the Times-Age apologises to the family of Cheyenne Ihaka.  It published this strong-hitting editorial last July after Ihaka's death.  Now, it turns out that the passenger in the car may have actually been the driver and has been charged with faking the scene (rearranging the body of his friend, etc.) to escape blame.  Of course, the Times-Age editor had no way of knowing at the time that this was the case, but he knows now.  Should the paper apologise now and retract its earlier assertion that Ihaka was "a ticking time bomb"?  I think some statement is in order.  Anyone agree/disagree?

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that this woman is holding the camera strangely?  What is she looking through??

Maybe Nikon's have different ergonomics?

Another "kin" story from the Port Townsend (WA) newspaper in 1905.  Seems my ggg-uncle was a bit of a detective as well.  I've attached a photo of the ship mentioned.  I can see why they'd need blankets!! :)

MRS. M.I. POSTUM ARRESTED

Woman Confesses that Goods Were Stolen by Her Brother, Earl Spaulding, Who is Now in Seattle -- Spaulding May Be Placed Under Arrest Today

Councilman Mutty has deserted his ordinary avocations and has gone into the detective business, and judging from the success of his first efforts, he will not do badly. On last Sunday the information reached him that the house of D.B. Veasie, who now lives at Douglas Island, Alaska, had been entered and about $300 worth of property taken. When Veasie left here for Alaska, he packed his household effects securely and left them at his home in the Fifth ward. Many of the things were valuable, such as blankets, clothing, bedding of all sorts, linen, clocks, etc., in fact everything that went to make up a complete list of household effects.  The doors hand been securely fastened and the windows boarded up.
   Some days ago a letter was received from Mr. Veasie, asking that certain of the effects be sent to him, as he was furnishing a new home at Douglas and could use them to advantage. But when the party went to look for them he found that the house had been robbed. He applied to Mr. Mutty for advice, knowing that he was an old friend of Mr. Veasie. It was a lucky though, as Mr. Mutty knew many of the things and was aware of the fact that there was a mark by which he could tell them if he once saw them. Many of the blankets and other things had been bought at the sale of the effects of a vessel that had been wrecked a number of years ago and bore the mark of "Cutch."
The thing then was to locate them. After studying the case over carefully he decided that the missing property might be at a certain house in the Dundee addition, but the difficulty lay in getting an entrance to the premises without arousing suspicion.  He finally conceived the idea of going to the premises with the agent, ostensibly with the purpose in view of purchasing the property. It worked to a nicety and while the agent was showing him through the place he took good care to examine every nook and corner. He was soon rewarded by finding a blanket that looked familiar and, sure enough, upon examination, the word "Cutch" was found on it. This settled the matter in his mind and his further search was made in a different manner an with the knowledge that he had struck the right spot. He confronted the woman of the house with the evidence and found that she was not the least surprised. She even stated that he would probably find the other things around and told him where the room of the probable thief was, stating at the same time that he was in Seattle at present.
To make a long story short, within a little while they had unearthed the entire batch of stolen goods, the house where they were found being occupied by Mr. and Mrs. M.I. Postum. The woman stated that the person who had stolen the goods was her brother, Earl Spaulding. While she made no attempt to conceal the name of the thief, yet while the search was being made she attempted to hide a number of sheets and linen of different kinds by placing the articles beneath the bedclothing.
F.W. Hastings was the agent of the house and the two lost no time in notifying the sheriff and swearing out a warrant for the arrest of Mrs. Postum. The sheriff went out to the place with a wagon and after a thorough search brought a wagon load of the stuff to the city with him, together with the woman who is now in jail. A warrant was also sworn out for Spaulding and an effort will be made to get him this morning in Seattle.
Entrance to the building had been gained by removing a window pane and then reaching an arm in and removing the door fastenings.

"...it is a well known fact that some people only think they think."

Came across a newspaper article from July 1904 (from the Port Townsend (Washington) Leader) about one of my kinfolk who had raised money for a livestock fence.  Loved the last line of the story:

"Councilman Peter Mutty who was had in charge the raising of a fund for the purpose of building a fence about the new city park, reports very flattering success, having drawn in dollars to the number of 186.
It is estimated that this amount will be sufficient to put a very decent fence around the park, a thing which has been found necessary owing to the inability of the poundmaster to keep livestock thoroughly corralled.

If it were possible to compel the people of the city to keep their livestock off the streets there would be little use of a fence, but so far all attempts of this kind have failed.  One fellow, who owns a Jersey cow down near the courthouse even going so far as to use the sidewalk for a hitching post for his cow, thereby making it a worse offense than if he had turned her loose, as she wandered across the street and her taut-drawn rope was dangerous to cyclers or drivers.  But it is a well known fact that some people only think they think."___
