Fraser Cain992,159I'd like to invite everyone to enjoy the *Perseid Meteor Shower for 2013*. This is one of the best meteor showers of the year because it's very active - with upwards of 60 meteors/hour - but also because you get nice warm summer weather in the Northern Hemisphere. http://www.universetoday.com/103826/the-2013-perseid-meteor-shower-an-observers-guide/ The shower peaks on the morning of August 12, 2013, but you can see plenty of meteors for a few days before and after, as we pass through the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. Take some time right now to make plans with your friends and family to enjoy this wonderful meteor shower.  Find a place nearby with dark skies so you can really appreciate the meteors against the backdrop of the Milky Way. Pack some comfy camp chairs, a few blankets and bring snacks and drinks. A pair of binoculars would be nice, but they won't help you see meteors - you just need your eyeballs. Here's a great tool that shows you where there's light pollution: http://www.jshine.net/astronomy/dark_sky/ Find a spot that's at least green on the map if you can. I'll post more details to this event as we have more organized, but at the very least, click Yes to this event. Start planning your enjoyment of this once a year activity. Thanks to +Randy Halverson for the beautiful picture.Perseid Meteor Shower - 20132013-08-12 06:00:00417

Happy #NationalAviationDay  ! This is a Boeing B-47E Stratojet at Castle Air Museum (http://www.castleairmuseum.org/) in Atwater, CA. It's a great place to stop and spend a few hours if you going up/down Hwy 99. They have a huge display of aircraft many of which are either restored, or in the restoration process. Since I last visited they've even added a former Air Force One aircraft!

On Sept 3 they're having their next Open Cockpit Day with all sorts of special activities for young and old.

Check out +John Chvatal , +Gazing Skyward TV , and the #NationalAviationDay  hashtag for more aviation posts!

This Day in Aviation History
August 7th, 1963
First flight of the Lockheed YF-12.

The Lockheed YF-12 was an American prototype interceptor aircraft evaluated by the United States Air Force. The YF-12 was a twin-seat version of the secret single-seat Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft, which led to the U.S. Air Force's Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird twin-seat reconnaissance variant. The YF-12 set and held speed and altitude world records of over 2,000 mph and over 80,000 ft (later surpassed by the SR-71), and is the world's largest manned interceptor to date.....

Rocket plumes are pretty hard to film, because they're not only very bright, but different parts of the image have different brightnesses, so filming at a single exposure doesn't work very well. Fortunately, NASA has been developing a camera specifically for this kind of thing: basically a slow-motion video camera with built-in HDR, so it can film simultaneously at several exposures and combine the result.

And the result is pretty great to watch. It's fun as a video, of course, but extremely important as a way to see the flow of superheated gases leaving the nozzle: critical to improving everything from safety, to power, to fuel efficiency.
