Frank Gainsford39,299A share of this circle within the public space will be appreciated as these are truly a great flock of influential and helpful folk, and the more places their profiles are found, the better the GOOGLESPHERE will become.A circle of people who are known and trusted for their advice and help in getting things done here in the Google sphere. If you are stuck and need some advice this is the team that can help you solve your problem.  These folk are all friendly, and active within the PLUSOSPHEREAdd this circle to your profile for a bunch of friendly and helpful advice on ALL THINGS GOOGLE with a very clear and distinct flavor of Google plus as the best social media platform to use for either social or business.PS you will not be added to this circle unless I have made personal use of a tip or advice that you have offered within your personal or business profile.  this is not a free for all circle, but a curated circle of those who have helped me, either knowingly or unknowingly with their  public posts being the source of the help I used.2014-08-27 11:11:30252425

Correa Mirti0This is a group of individuals that has personally shared four of my best circle sharing circles in the last month (or so).  They also include a mix of new circle sharers and some that are just trying to learn it for the first time. :) :) :0)They are individuals, to a large degree, that are very interested in not just circle sharing (which is great), but also engaging with you in a meaningful way (which is awesome)!!!Guidelines for Core Multipliers- Share the circle to stay in the circle- Have some fun!- If you are new and want in the circle, share the circle. This is a great group.  Enjoy this circle and have an awesome Thursday!*if you were somehow missed/ not included in the circle, please let me know and it will be corrected on the next share. My apologies ahead of time! :)**For those coming from multiplying circle, we are not inviting new folks here, you can privately message them or ping them when you share the circle on your public feed. Markos Giannopoulos13,655Engagers VI: Christmas edition // It's a festive season so my monthly "round-up & thank you" circle is on the right mood!First some stats on people who engaged me (gathered via +Circloscope) and on my posts (tracked by +CircleCount):September: 620 plussers, 93 commentators and 86 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 745 +1s, 74 re-shares and 117 comments October: 395 plussers, 33 commentators and 39 sharers on 43 posts for a total of 1057 +1s, 80 re-shares and 165 comments November: 616 plussers, 114 commentators and 176 sharers on 32 posts for a total of 1109 +1s, 234 re-shares and 227 commentsA great month fuelled by two posts: 6+1 WordPress initial-setup plugins  (http://bit.ly/1bKXVgX 359 +1s, 59 comments, 183 re-shares) and Ode à Eiffel (http://bit.ly/1heptNZ 46 +1s, 4 comments, 5 re-shares). If I wanted to get "analytical" about it, it was two posts with some decent value (helpful list of plugins in one case on a every-day issue for a WordPress developer and an album of 18 original photos of night Paris on the other) :) So on to the circle: the formula for this month is - Plussers who are on over 3 engagers circles (so basically who have engaged with me in previous months as well this one)  - Sharers and commentators - A few kind highly-engaging people who have shared original circles including me. - People with over 300 in G+'s "relevance score" (as reported by +Circloscope), e.g. the people Google considers that I interact more and post similar content to mine (or of my interest)All in all, this came to a healthy group of 340 content creators and real engagers interested in technology and photography. Feel free to add them! As usual, stats and circle creation for this post were only made possible thanks to +CircleCount and +Circloscope. #engagers   #circleshare #circlesharing   #circleversary #milestone #googleplus #circleoftheday #circleplus #public #publiccircles 2013-12-16 17:49:57340441178

Markos Giannopoulos3,766197 interesting People // If you're into technology, the Web, photography and science, here's a circle to consider. Methodology: out of 3200 people that I follow, using +Circloscope I ordered them according to relevance score (calculated by Google depending on whose posts I engage the most) and filtered for a value over 30, then filtered for whether they are active (when was their last post) and finally filtered by whether they were in my "must read" circles. matthew rappaport147,898499 +Google+ ers that are RELEVANT to me according to the PLUSarithmThis MEGA +Shared Circles on G+ is literally the 1st 499 names that are listed when RELEVANCE is selected and 'Your Circles' is clicked under https://plus.google.com/circles (very close to it!)There are 15 that I didn't include in the circle but made the cut that are celebs or pages that I will list below as I wanted to share more users overall in this #sharedcircle  which is almost entirely full of WIN.It is interesting that the first couple of rows are a mix of people I spent more time with in the beginning and with people I spend more time with now (which has interlap!) and of course how does one define 'spent time with' when talking about a social network place but the stream, hangouts, gtalk, +H.I.R.L., etc. The algorithm is not there yet to take note of all the data let alone measuring offline interaction but I tend to +mention people (a page in the Top 499, left out of this circle) a few people now and again, it seems the more you do that with a person or page, the more relevant they are to you in this list. I wonder if that data showing how many times you tagged someone and them you will be available in the future and if so, everyone can expect that number to be high for most from me!I do find it curious that +G+ Interviews which is a page started by +Peter G McDermott that I was helping with takes up my number 3 spot when I haven't tagged it in so long or done much with it in a bit nor felt I ever interacted with it to any level compared with those surrounding it. It's not a perfect system for sure and we all might have ones that slip through the crack that make us go, "Why is this person more relevant or WHO is this person?!"I am the +1 in this circle but everyone else is the +1000 zombies that +byron rempel will turn UNDEAD  +1000 that rocks the PLUS. When I first collected the Top 500 Plussers on Google+, I spend a lot of time weeding out the people whose posts in which I didn't particularly have an interest (e.g. almost all of the photographers - nothing against people who post photos to G+, it's just me: this is Google+, not Flickr; people who only ever promote themselves - so quite a lot of the pop musicians). The list that is left are people who, I think, actually contribute to the stream. You may find some surprising choices (Dolly Parton?! Actually, yes!). I wish I could send this article to the outraged woman sitting at the table next to me, going on about the NYT article about Burning Man, techies, and shark jumping.

I've done my fair amount of Burning Man kvetching, but I also went. And I'm very glad that Burning Man exists, regardless of my own take and need for it, and that it brings happiness to so many people.

Take your hatorade elsewhere; there's almost an infinite number of things is this world more deserving of it.

In grade school, you probably learned about the average, also known as the mean. You may have learned about other numbers, like the median and the mode, which also characterize how things are distributed. These numbers, however, tend to conceal more than they reveal: when you really want to understand something, you look at a curve called the distribution instead. That curve is simply a plot of how often each possible outcome occurs, and all of the numbers above -- numbers called "measures of central tendency" -- can be calculated from that curve, and summarize various aspects of the curve.

The reason that professionals care about the curve more than the numbers is that the curve is full of secrets of its own. One of the most interesting secrets is what's called "universality:" it turns out that there is a very small set of shapes, and almost every distribution curve you... more »

One of the most interesting secrets is what's called "universality:" it turns out that there is a very small set of shapes, and almost every distribution curve you actually encounter in the world, whether you're measuring the frequency at which people use words, or the time it takes to get through a checkout line, or the number of marmots in a field, turns out to have one of these shapes.

(Or more specifically, real distributions are almost always combinations of these shapes, say a bump of one shape here and a curve of another shape there. That always means that two distinct things are going on, each contributing a single shape, and it can be one of the fastest ways to understand how the system is really working.)

Why are distributions more interesting? Apart from being able to read the secrets of their shapes, the problem with just looking at numbers is what they hide. There's an old joke about two guys in a bar in Seattle, grousing about how broke they are, when Bill Gates walks in. One of them pauses for a sec, thinks hard, then jumps up and yells "Drinks are on me, everyone!" His friend asks him, "Are you crazy? I thought you said you were broke!" "No, I just did the math! On the average, everyone in here is a millionaire!"

So let's talk about these shapes a bit more. There are four particularly common shapes. (There are a few others as well, but 99.5% of the time what you see are combinations of these four)

The first is the Gaussian, or bell curve. Gaussians generally happen when there's something that happens roughly the same way every time, and the deviations from that "same way" are completely random and uncorrelated noise. For example, if you measure how long it takes you to walk down the same hallway every day, the distribution curve will probably be a Gaussian. The position of the center of the bell curve tells you the average, and its width tells you how frequent random disruptions are.

The second is the exponential curve. This looks like a sharp spike followed by a decay. (Specifically, a decay shaped like F = e^−(ax), where x is the value that we're measuring, F is the number of times we saw x, and a is a constant) This is most often a sign of queues. For example, if you measure how long it takes to read a small file from a hard disk, and do it over and over again, the frequency distribution of times will look like a Gaussian added to an exponential. Why? Because the time it takes to read from an idle disk is a Gaussian -- there's a random amount of time it takes the head to seek to the right position, and then it takes a constant amount of time to do the reading. However, if the computer is busy, then you have to wait in line before that can start, and it turns out that the distribution of the time it takes to wait in line is almost always an exponential. (That fact is something we regularly use in computing to identify when the problem is that things are getting stuck waiting in line)

The third shape is a power law. This looks sort of like an exponential, but it has a much heavier tail. (The formula is F = (x/x0)^−a, and if you plot it on a log-log chart, it looks like a straight line) Power laws turn out to be extremely universal whenever humans are involved: for example, if you look at a large body of text and ask "what fraction of words show up frequently versus rarely," the shape is a power law, no matter what language. (In that case, a is about 1.8, in case you're curious. Syntax words like "and" and "the" are the most common, obscure nouns like "zymurgy" are among the rare ones, and there's a long tail of words that basically appear only once in a corpus) But power laws show up all over the place: look at the number of pictures people take each week. Look at the number of friends people have. Look at the size of cities.

It turns out that there are some fairly deep reasons that power laws are so common. For example, imagine you're looking at a network -- say, the phone network, or the network of people's friends. If a network formed by "random attachment," that is, any new node that shows up is equally likely to attach to any other node, then the distribution of how many neighbors everyone has is a Gaussian. But if it forms by "preferential attachment," that is, a newcomer is more likely to attach to someone who already knows a lot of people, then you can show mathematically that you get a power law. Lots of real networks do this: new people in a social group, for example, are more likely to start out by meeting the really gregarious person at the middle.

(This is really important for practical applications, too, because preferential-attachment networks have all sorts of other interesting features. For example, a random-attachment network doesn't become disconnected (no longer joining everyone) until you blow up a lot of links. A preferential-attachment network, on the other hand, can disconnect very quickly if you lose the very central nodes. If your network is the Internet, then you really want to keep things from being disconnected, so it's important to know what parts are the most critical. On the other hand, if your network is the graph of people who were in physical contact with each other (a preferential-attachment network), which also happens to be the graph along which contagious diseases spreads, you might be very interested in making this network disconnect: that tells you that investing your money in making sure that contagious diseases don't spread through the people with the highest number of connections is a much better bet than trying to protect everyone equally. It turns out that immunizing a hermit doesn't do nearly as much as immunizing, say, the janitor of a large building.)

And then there's a fourth common shape, the Tracy-Widom Curve. This one looks sort of like a skewed bell curve, Gaussian on the left and exponential on the right. It shows up all over the place as well, especially when studying systems with a lot of strong interactions amongst themselves. However, we don't really understand why it's so common yet: it's proven a tougher nut to crack than the power law.

However, there's been some recent progress: it turns out that this curve may be happening whenever there's a certain kind of phase transition behavior in the system, similar to ice melting or water boiling. And this article will tell you more about that.

The key takeaways are:

* Distributions matter! Averages and so on lie, because they hide things. If you really want to understand something, always demand the distribution.

* Distributions always seem to be combinations of a handful of standard shapes. If there's more than one shape in a distribution, you're seeing several different physical processes at once, and each shape tells you a story.

* There are four standard shapes, and we understand three of them pretty well and know how to read stories from them: Gaussians telling you about random events, exponentials about something waiting in line, power laws about humans or biology being somehow involved, or about preferential attachment, or a few other similar things. There's a fourth one which we're only starting to understand, but it keeps showing up, too.

* Statistics is cool, because it reveals the secrets of the universe and helps you fix problems.

According to Mr. Olson's parsing of some recent research on married couples:

1. Date for multiple years before the proposal
2. Make a lot of money
3. Attend religious services together
4. Don't value your partner for their looks or money
5. Have as many people as possible attend the wedding
6. But spend as little as possible on the wedding
7. Don't skip the honeymoon

Obviously these aren't causal but probably represent deeper values or causes.

Yesterday I rode the Levi's King Ridge Gran Fondo, a 100-mile bicycle ride here in California. I've ridden in this event for each of the last 7 years (minus one year I missed). This ride has become a tradition, a way to see cycling friends who I don't get to see very often, and a force to keep myself in "century shape."

Within that, I've ridden just for fun, ridden to help others, and ridden for a good time. I had never ridden the course in less than 7 hours. But this year, in the back of my head, I wanted that. Within that, I've ridden just for fun, ridden to help others, and ridden for a good time. I had never ridden the course in less than 7 hours. But this year, in the back of my head, I wanted that. The day came, it was really hot, my training had been OK, and I rode slowly in the beginning to socialize with friends. But I kept up a good pace on the climbs, managed my heat, kept my rest stops short.

After the final big climb, the goal was still within reach. I dropped like a stone over the potholed Sonoma county descents, kept up my pace on the flats, and then, as I faced the final 10 miles of flats in the 95-degree Santa Rosa sun, my strength started to leave me. I was SO hot. I had more or less stopped sweating. I could only manage about 16 miles per hour on the flats with a significant effort (180 heart rate). I needed to average at least 15 mph to make my time. And then, with less than 3 miles to go, my legs started to cramp. I pounded on them with my fist to unlock them and kept going. A random cyclist gave me a few sips from his water bottle (thanks so much!). The finish finally came. I sprinted for it, hitting my highest heart rate of the day. 6 hours 56 minutes!

I was zonked. I stumbled through the finish area, a baking hot parking lot. I located and walked to the water tent at the bike festival at the end. I guzzled some water, poured more over my head, and my eyes stung from the salt. I parked myself in the shade by a recycling bin and waited to start feeling OK. +Alexandra Kenin came and took care of me and we hung out there while we ate three order of fries, more food, and beer. What a good day.

Thanks to Ali for supporting my training and to the organizers and to all the volunteers and riders in such good shape along the way.

+Debbie Leight and +Baris Baser, I'm so glad we have this tradition together. See you next year!

Tips for +Android Wear developers on getting your graphics to look great.

Developing for Wearables: 3 quick tips to get crisp graphics

After developing for the rich ecosystem of Android devices, wearable developers sometimes wonder how to handle images.  It’s tempting to think that developing for one type of Glass unit or one or two watches means you don’t need to worry about different devices.  But remember, wearables are still Android devices, meaning size, screen density, and form factor can vary.  Develop your apps thoughtfully on today’s products, and they’ll run — and run well — on a diverse range of devices in the future.

Here are three quick guidelines to help you produce crisp, scalable graphics on wearables:

1.  If your app runs directly on the wearable device (a micro-apk for Wear, or a GDK app for Glass) use density buckets!  Put your drawables in at least res/drawable-hdpi.  Our Wear samples also include -xhdpi.

2.  Using Android Wear notifications?  Use density buckets.  Put non-bitmap assets for notifications (icons, etc) in at least the phone’s res/drawable-hdpi folder.  If you use these icons for notifications on Android phones as well, follow regular mobile app best practices [1] and supply them in -mdpi to -xxhdpi.

3. The only exception — for the background of an Android Wear notification, put your bitmap in the res/drawable-nodpi folder.  When creating the notification, use the WearableExtender class, and then the setBackground() method [2].  A bitmap size of 400x400 (or 640x400 for horizontal parallax) will produce a great-looking image.  Anything larger will currently get downsampled, causing extra work.

Because I have two daughters, and how could I say I'd been a good father if I didn't try and change the world to make it better for them.

Because I have a mother. Because I have a wife. Because I have friends who are women. Because I work with women. Because I know a whole lot of wonderful women that I care about, and I'm horrified that any environment exists where they would be so reviled and harassed simply because they were women.

Because I have friends. Guy friends. Gay friends. Drinking friends. Designer friends. Geek friends. Game friends. Even some who don't play any games. I can't think of a single one of them whom I wouldn't be ashamed to look in the eye if they asked me, "If you thought this was wrong, why didn't you stand up? Why didn't you say something?"

Because no one should be treated this way. ___Amen.

Interesting bit of cultural history here in San Francisco. Personally, I'm surprised that more places aren't named for the Native American tribes that once populated the area.

My friend made this awesome app where San Francisco people can see the Muni next-bus time just by shaking their iPhone on the lock screen!___Clever use of gestures for time-sensitive information.
