Lotus Carroll1,778,490This is the Event for our March Self Portrait Challenge: "Scanography." What this means is your image must be captured using a scanner of some sort. We can make beautiful art using all kinds of different tools - this should challenge you to use something a little different than what you usually turn to when making images, which is fun and informative to your creative process. :-) If you don't have a scanner of your own, ask a friend or use one at your workplace (with permission, no getting in trouble at your job) or public library. *Be careful* - _don't hurt yourself or damage the scanner!_ Get creative and have fun - these images can be very striking and have a great quality to them that lends itself to creative posing, styling, and processing. Here is where you enter your ONE "Scanography" Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST March 31st, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* I've curated a gallery of really interesting scanography self-portraits that you can check out for inspiration. Check it out here: https://goo.gl/81S5TH If you'd like, you can see an album of my own scanography here: https://goo.gl/sXCiW8 Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/W69Ohj and ask away! We have a category for discussion and questions and are happy to help with anything.  *Prizes* ~1 Year @118357019708110162087 Business Account http://www.smugmug.com/features (or comped value on current account) ~$150 Gift Certificate (restrictions apply*) for @108289626026839048870 http://www.borrowlenses.com  ~@100266938567862344330 Digital Holster 20 https://goo.gl/OTECbM ~ @101789561086090624750 Gift Code in the amount of $42.95 http://www.capturingcouture.com  *Please circle these sponsors* - we love their products and services and it's great that they support our learning and growing together. Having them circled is a requirement to be a winner. :) There will be 4 winners. 1st place winner selects choice of 4 prizes, and also has their image take the place of the current Avatar for The Art of Self Portraiture Community. 2nd place selects choice of 3 remaining prizes. 3rd place selects choice of 2 remaining prizes. 4th place receives the remaining prize. Winners must respond within 24 hours of being contacted or new winners will be chosen. At the end of the month, the Owners and Moderators of The Art of Self Portraiture Community will vote on the submissions and choose 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th place winners. The image on this post was taken near sunset in Port Aransas, TX, but the water wasn't yellow, and the sky wasn't green. I enjoyed making it appear that way, however. :-) I used Lightroom to make all the adjustments on this photo; the jumping off point was a Trey Ratcliff preset called "Turkish Blast." I made several adjustments after that, including additional graduated filters and spot brushing to achieve the final effect. I know the big thing this weekend was to shun black Friday and to ‪#‎getoutsomewhere‬ or whatever the hashtag was but the reality was for me was that my daughter came home from college and we were busy doing what we pleased. We saw family, hung out with friends, ate some good food, and really just enjoyed being together... inside or out. Honestly, I ‪#‎getouttherealot‬ so this weekend wasn't that special to get out "there" for, family and friends came first. My hope is that you enjoyed your weekend with your peeps, yourself, or whomever you hang with and did what makes you happy.

Here's a shot from a weekend I spent with my son and some friends. This is Proxy Falls near Sisters, OR.

SQUIRREL!!!

We have a very active backyard. Since we back up to a wooded area I keep a variety of bird feeders out to attract the local wildlife. Yesterday while filling one of the feeders I had a major spill of some seed, this has benefitted the squirrel population today. Much to Owens dismay the squirrels are having a feeding frenzy today. Here's a shot of one of the lucky critters stuffing her face.

I edited this shot, taken with my Sony a7rii, on my iPhone 6 Plus using Lightroom mobile while watching the Civil War game.

Camping Under the Stars

The night sky at the Alvord Desert is absolutely fantastic, I've not seen that many stars since standing on the top of Mauna Kea on Hawaii.

This weekend I played a little more with star photography and some light painting. The tent is lit from the inside by my SolarPuff and the +Jeep  is lit with my headlamp both inside and out (that took a little running around).

Proxy Falls

I'm so glad Alex and I made the side trip to see Proxy Falls. This is a three shot pano. The crop isn't standard but I wanted to show a bit more of the surrounding trees to give an overall sense of the view from the middle of the stream. I can't wait to go back here sometime in the Spring.

This rain is fabulous! This scene pictured here will look totally different from the day I shot it. I was ankle deep in the water here, today it'd probably be up to my knees.

This is not my usual waterfall shot. Most of the time my goal is to capture the scene set before me and share with you the grandeur of the whole falls in all its magnificence. This time I decided to move in and capture this batch of fern that was growing in the most precarious spot in the midst of this waterfall. Despite the trials it must face during high flows it continues to grow on the perch its seed landed on. You go little fern!

Autumn is upon us and I couldn't be happier. Okay, maybe I could be... let's hope father Winter nails us with some big snow! That'd be awesome.

This is a scene from the stream that feeds the Cedar Creek Grist Mill near Woodland, WA from a couple weeks ago.

Today I was beyond stoked to see the rain fall. The rain brings growth, green and heavy water flow in places like the Gorge. I know for some it's a downer but for me it's energy and brings on a sense of adventure and inspiration. I live in the Northwest for a reason and the rain is a major part of that reason.

This is a shot of the Cedar Creek Grist Mill just outside of Woodland Washington taken last weekend. If you haven't been you should go, it's a mere hour outside of Portland and well worth the drive. They'll also grind you up some grains while you're there.

Panorama of the inside of a Nuclear Cooling Tower. I must say, it's a pretty cool experience to stand inside one of these and see first hand the immense nature of such a man made structure. Plus, the sound in this thing is one of the most incredible things I've ever heard.

This is the combination of three separate shots merged together with Lightroom with slight tweaks for exposure and tone.

Moulton Falls Bridge

This weekend after visiting the Cedar Creek Grist Mill we headed to a new location nearby that +Amy Heiden found on a Google search.  The water was dark, deep and still which provided a nice subtle reflection of the bridge and surrounding trees.  This is a two shot pano stitched together in Lightroom with just a few small tweaks for color balance and light.

I don't post many selfies but when I do it's from the top of a cooling tower.

I've not been on that's ever been afraid of heights but the older I get the more they unnerve me. Don't let the smile in the photo fool you, I was sweating bullets.

Yesterday I headed to the coast to check out the Tierra Del Mar area to do some shooting but ended up finding nothing of interest. Since I was close to one of my favorite spots on the coast I popped on down to Pelican Brewing for a beer and bite to eat and waited for sunset. I'm glad I stuck around, it ended up being one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen on the coast in quite sometime.

This long exposure was taken from the rocks on the south end of Cape Kiwanda as the tide was receding. I was straddling the gap in the photo and took a few big splashes as the waves came crashing through. The wet pants, soaked shoes, and coldness was totally worth enduring to watch this scene unfold.

Enchanted Larches

A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to hike into The Enchantments for the first time. What a place! I am already looking forward to going back. The weather was hit and miss and never my ideal for shooting but I tried to make the best of it. My ultimate goal was to see the Larches turning color and capture them in there amazing Autumn color but when we got there they were in mid turn. This is a shot of them at one of the upper lakes reflecting in the cold mountain water.

Dutchman Falls

Located along the Larch Mountain trail above Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is a series of smaller falls named Dutchman Falls. This is one of the three: lower, middle or upper - which one I'm not sure.

My bones ache for some time out in the Gorge. Honestly this summer has sucked for me regarding photography. I know I should be out shooting no matter the conditions but the reality is, I'm spoiled. I'm used to perfect conditions, no crowds, and lots of free time. This summer has not afforded me that. I assure you that I will make up for it this fall. I've got a permit for the Enchantments in September that I'm super stoked about and if what "they" is saying according to those around me it's going to be a cold and wet winter. Fingers crossed! This heat, the blue skies, the lack of rain... really? I live in Oregon... I want cold, clouds, and lot's of wet. Bring it on! Now!

I've got much to learn about night photography.

Last weekend I went out to the Peter Iredale to play under the stars. Most of the time I was there people had fires, flashlights, and kids running everywhere so I just played around with different settings to see what I could get. Most of those shots included light trails, odd glows, and a lot of light pollution in the background. In the end my biggest challenge was focusing the camera, even with my bright led light it was a major challenge. This shot was taken after a police officer came and cleared out the people parked in the lot that closes at 10PM. He was super kind and let me and another photographer stay for another hour. He did mention that parking on the beach does not close... noted for the future.

Yesterday my son and his friends took my dads canoe out on the Yamhill river for some adventure. They had a great time exploring and swimming. It was great to see them excited about doing something outside and that didn't involve electronics of any kind.

This is a shot I took of them from a foot bridge with my iPhone on their return to the car. Most of my iPhone shots are shared on Instagram; you can follow me there at https://instagram.com/brian_bonham

While my wife and daughter are away traveling the United Kingdom, my son and I have been left home to hold down the fort. I decided to take today off and have some fun with him and the pup. We ended up at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon Coast; one of my favorite places. Here's an iPhone shot of him and Owen on the rocks that I posted to Instagram. It was a great day!

I have some mixed feelings about the Gorge right now. I love it and I hate it at the same time. You ask, "but Brian, how can you hate such a beautiful place?". The answer isn't a simple one, and it can also be a selfish one. The Columbia River Gorge is an extraordinary marvel of Creation. The river, the waterfalls, the trees, the vast amount of natural beauty in one place, and the serenity that it can offer makes it a desirable location to see and experience... it's the serenity where the hate comes in.

Imagine if Disneyland offered you a one day pass to their park and said that only you and a few of your friends would be allowed in during your visit. Tempting? Heck yes it is! Who wouldn't want the Happiest Place on Earth to them selves for a day? Well that's how I feel about the Gorge. Selfish, I know and am the first to admit it. Believe me when I say, I want everyone to see the Gorge, I want everyone to enjoy it's beauty, and I don't want it to be a private sanctuary (well maybe a little). But as of late it has become, what my fellow photographer buddy TJ Thorne calls, Disneygorge (check out some of his recent posts to see what he means).

As of recent days all of my outings to this wonderful place have been met with the utmost of disappointment. Dog poop in bags left on the side of trails, graffiti etched into sign posts, initials etched into the lichen, plastic bottles floating down once pristine streams, cars parked in the bushes, and people... oh so many people. I fear that the generation of kids that I'm raising will not be able to enjoy this beautiful place with their kids one day.

This photo attached to this post is of the log jam that you have to climb over to get into the Oneonta Gorge, one, if not my favorite places in this area. I post it because I overheard one of the visitors exclaim "I wish someone would come in and cut these logs out to make it easier to get in!" Well I for one hope that the logs make it harder.
I write this because I know many of you love this place too. I also write this for those that haven't been but want to go. It's a plea, a plea to sense and understanding. What you are going to see or what you want to go see is nature. Nature. Not dog poop stuffed in a bag, not someones initials carved in a stone or tree, not the Pepsi bottle floating in the river, nor the remnants of somebody's lunch left by a tree stump. Please, please, please treat this place with respect, compassion and courtesy for the next visitor.

It feels like forever since I've been out shooting in the Gorge, or anywhere for that matter. As nice as it is to have the sun out and the Jeep top down it's not my favorite weather for shooting. This image is from a trip this past spring to Ruckel Creek. I'll have to make up for time lost this coming Fall when the clouds return and the leaves start changing.

My first shot of the hummingbird that has been coming to my new feeders. I was inspired by +Alexis Coram and her recent and amazing hummingbird shots to try to attract some to my small backyard. After a month I've had this one returning regularly for two weeks. I finally got out there to get a shot of it.

Let me be frank.  I dig the new Photos feature on mobile but hate it on my PC.  It took me way too long to figure out how to add this to one of my albums that I started before Google put out Photos.  //shortrant

I've spent a lot of time in the Columbia River Gorge, and will spend a ton more exploring new places. So far, of the places I've been Gorton Creek near the Wyeth Campground is one of my favorites. This is Emerald Falls just up the trail on an easy hike. This cascading creek is filled with beautiful and picturesque spots for any level of hiker to enjoy.

Falls Creek Falls

This was from my second time hiking up to this falls last week and I assure you it won't be my last. The next time I'm going to hike up to the top to see the falls above more closely.

+Colby Brown was in town and +Brian Matiash and +Nicole S. Young wanted to show him some of the sweet spots in the PNW and although we only hit one of the three on the list for the day it was still a good time. The sun and clouds were battling it out and we sat patiently waiting for the few moments the clouds were winning. After a bit we called it good and headed home, the sun was winning a bit too much.

Spent the last two days celebrating the birthdays of these two awesome kids. 18 and 14, time flies when you're having fun, or when you have two kids who keep you on your toes and entertained. I love them both and look forward to what the future holds for them. This coming Fall my daughter will head off to college and my son will enter his first year of high school, I'm excited for them both.

I took these photos of the two of them with my iPhone on our way to dinner downtown Portland. I love the atmosphere and backdrops the city offers.

Big M in B&W

Sometimes a photo just screams black and white. I don't do many but on this morning the clouds were sweeping by the falls and when I looked at the photo in color it was okay but the contrast of the trees, water, and rock prompted me to convert it to black and white. I shot this from the parking lot off 84 with my 70-200mm because when I walked up to the falls the clouds were hidden against the sky and it was hard to tell their proximity to the falls.

Gorton Creek Falls - Part II

As you begin to make plans for the weekend maybe you're considering a trip out to see some waterfalls. May I make a suggestion? Go to this one.

This is one of the lesser known falls off Hwy 84 in the Columbia River Gorge. I'm not sure if it's because of its location, the fact you can't see it from your car, or that the hike isn't a casual one. It's not that the hike is long, it's just filled with obstacles you have to climb over, under, or around. If you're up for a little adventure park at the Wyeth Campground and just follow the creek until you can't go any further and this is what you will see. Along the path you will also see Emerald Falls which the path skirts along as you come to the more difficult part of the hike.

Oh, so you haven't visited Gorton Creek yet? Well you should. If you want to experience the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge but don't want to hassle with the crowds, then this is your spot. Just walk through the campground after parking off the Wyeth exit off Hwy 84 and you'll soon see a meandering creek. Follow this creek towards it's source as far as you can go, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Skunk Flower

The first day +Ana Andres was in town I decided to take her on an adventure to see Abiqua Falls. Those that have been know that it's more than just a quick trip down. I've been a few times and know the joy of seeing the falls for the first time when you round that last bend, it never gets old for me. When we got to that spot along the river I had to stop and see Ana's reaction to seeing the falls for the first time. Totally priceless. Her reaction was why I love taking people to places like this.

We walked into the falls and started to scout where we would take our shots. I immediately noticed the small patch of skunk cabbage up on the right rim and knew that's where I was heading. After wading through the very cold creek I had to climb the unstable hillside making sure that with each step I didn't dislodge the large loose rocks. Once at the top... more »

After wading through the very cold creek I had to climb the unstable hillside making sure that with each step I didn't dislodge the large loose rocks. Once at the top I found that most of the flowers were either broken off, facing the wrong way for a good shot, or not fully developed. But there was this one. After a few shots I had to make the nasty climb down, fortunately I to ford the creek to get back which allowed me to wash all the mud off that I collected on the way up.

Mmmm... Coffee

Today was weekend thirteen for the coffee dates my wife and I are doing. So far we are having a lot of fun getting out and seeing more of Portland and its cozy neighborhoods. The coffee culture in Portland is as impressive as the craft beer one. We have so many more shops and roasters to try that it will be years before we duplicate a spot.

Multnomah Falls

Spring growth is just starting to hit the Gorge.  Soon the dead looking trees will be filled with life.  This was Multnomah Falls yesterday afternoon as seen from the parking lot off 84 westbound.

Abiqua Falls

Last weekend my daughter and I ventured down to Abiqua Falls.  It's not the easiest place to get to but one that is well worth the journey.

Upper Ruckel Creek

Despite the crowds in the Columbia River Gorge this weekend I was still able to find a place that only a few people visited while I was shooting. Literally a few, I only saw three people in the area I shot this picture outside of Brian who was with me. As we drove along and saw the crowds parking alongside the iconic spots deep down I knew this spot would be unaffected. This is Ruckel Creek, it doesn't carry the majesty of Multnomah Falls, but it is no less beautiful in its pure natural beauty. I have recently come to knowledge of this place and look forward to exploring it more as upstream there are treasures that few have seen and few will ever see with their own eyes.

Ruckel Creek in the Columbia River Gorge from this weekend.

The sun was out and so were the crowds. Except here. I didn't see another person, besides the few in our group, the whole time I was shooting here. The sun was tucked behind the south side of the gorge leaving the creek bathed in a nice even light.

Today I set off for adventure with +William Woodward and +Britta Gissler for some good hiking and exploration. We left our big cameras behind and just enjoyed the Columbia River Gorge. We made a last minute change of plans and ended up at Ruckel Creek in hopes of finding the Mossy Grotto. A you can see in this Photoshpere we found it. It is spectacular so it took this to share it with you.

Often when I go shoot a waterfall I aim to capture the main event, that is, the big waterfall itself. This past weekend I was out with +Brian Matiash, +Nicole S. Young, +Hudson Henry, and +Matt Kloskowski shooting at Little Zig Zag Falls and just felt totally uninspired by the scene around me. The water was low, the snow was melting and dirty, all of the small trees looked like dead twigs, and there were so many things that blocked the wonderful view of the main falls. For almost an hour I didn't take a single shot. Eventually I crossed the creek and made my way downstream away from the group and came across this scene. The moss on the logs laying across the stream was my first attraction but then I noticed I could frame in the main falls as a highlight in the background of these crossing logs.

My buddy Brian has put up a post today on his blog and subsequent social media pages today about embracing such obstacles while shooting. If you don't follow him, you should. His insights are spot on and he's not such a bad shooter either wink emoticon Check out his post at: http://brianmatiash.com/2015/01/13/embrace-obstacles/ and sign up for his newsletter and/or follow him here on Google+ for the latest.

Waterfalls... I can't help but to love them. Thankfully Oregon and the rest of the Pacific Northwest are full of them.

I don't care what season it is, waterfalls are just amazing. The cascade of the water and the sound draw me in. It's winter now and I keep hoping for some snow and ice covered falls and this waterfall along with Abiqua are two that I will take a vacation day to get out and shoot. I've got snow ready tires on the Jeep and a pair of Kahtoola MICROspikes in the ready. If you look closely to the right side of the falls you will see an icicle hanging off the ledge. I was a day too late for the freeze, however, soon the weather will bow to my bidding and give me what I want and I will be there to capture to glowing white essence of winter on the waterfall.

This is my last night of vacation before returning to the grind tomorrow. Gotta say I had a great time having my good friend +Amy Heiden in town and getting to meet +Tran Mai and Kris in person for the first time. This shot was from an excursion out to Ecola State park along with the incomparable +Brian Matiash and +Nicole S. Young.

This shot was taken among the cliffs on the South side of the park where I wandered off to get a better vantage point of the keyhole rock seen to the left of the shot. I felt that a black and white conversion was a good option as the colors were pretty flat but the contrast was high. More exploration of this area during a nice sunset is definitely in the plans.

The last time I tried to get to Abiqua Falls I failed miserably. Today I finally made it back and found the falls. Since +Amy Heiden was around I dragged her with. We were hoping that the ice that was on the walls yesterday stuck around for us to shoot today but our luck fell short. It was still an amazing place and I'll be making some return trips. Here is a photoshpere of the falls.

Lower Lewis Falls, Washington

The first time I saw this waterfall was this past summer in the early morning. The light was magnificent and lit up the trees around the falls in bright greens and yellows. This past weekend I ventured up for a second visit with +Brian Matiash  and +Nicole S. Young  for their first visit.

Due to the recent rains the water flow was significantly higher and changed the look of the falls a bit. A bunch of the details that I enjoyed in the summer were lost in the high flow. The high flow also prevented us from being able to get down to water level for other vantages of the falls. Ultimately we were stuck with a singular view of the falls from the main lookout point.

This go around at the falls didn't provide as many shots as the last but I always enjoy getting out in nature to explore this wonderful area we live in.

I've shared +Don Komarechka's work before but he bears repeating. Don's photos of snowflakes are just incredible, and I don't use that word lightly. Not only does he take and share incredible images of individual snowflakes, he shares the background and interesting information on the type, shape, etc. of each flake. Circle him up and check out his work, trust me, you won't regret it.

Snowflake-a-Day #18
No, I did not inject any neon dye into this snowflake. The colour is quite natural (and even more awesome because if it) and illustrates the crazy and unexpected beauty found in snowflakes. View large!

I’m sure I’ll be posting more colourful crystals through the rest of this project, but I’m always in awe of the way these colours and shapes form. Thin film interference is the cause (read more about it here: http://skycrystals.ca/pages/optical-interference-pages.jpg ) and the variations in colour are produced by changing the thickness of the ice. Almost always situated around bubbles that form naturally as a snowflake grows, but not all snowflakes hold these colours.

We’ve had one storm so far this year that has given me some vibrant crystals to play with. Last year we had a handful, and I’m hopeful to see a few more this year. It’s not as common as my photo stream might lead you to believe, but under the right conditions you can see a glimpse of these colours with the naked eye. Next time you see incredibly small hexagonal snowflakes falling from the sky, take a closer look – you might see some colour in the light reflected off of them.

You’ll also notice that this snowflake has an inner triangular shape and three-fold symmetry around the center, but the outer edge of the crystal has reformed into a more standard hexagon. The way a snowflake tumbles through the air can force the leading edge of a crystal to gather more water vapour than the trailing edge. These aerodynamic properties and a bit difficult to understand, but it’s responsible for the triangular shapes that are sometimes seen within snowflakes.

For such a tiny crystal (1mm diameter) it certainly has a lot to offer. For more snowflake science and all of the photographic techniques used in creating this image, check out Sky Crystals: http://www.skycrystals.ca/ - 304pg hardcover book perfect for any macro photographer in winter. :)___I've shared +Don Komarechka's work before but he bears repeating.
