Moderators' posts (and comments) now labelled in communities

It can sometimes be a little hard to spot the moderators that help keep communities up, running, and healthy. So, today we're happy to introduce a new label on moderators' posts and comments that identifies their important role.

It'll roll out today on the desktop version of the site when viewing a community's stream. Hope you enjoy, and let us know what you think!

I think a few community mods will be excited about this one!

Pinned posts are useful for more than just announcements - they also make it easier to establish the norms of a community, by demonstrating what a "good" post looks like.

#NoLongerAtGoogleButStillCheeringTheTeamOn

Moderators can now pin posts in Communities

By popular demand, Community Moderators and Owners will now be able to highlight a post in their Community by pinning it to the top.  The “Pin post” option can be found on any post in your Community.  The post will then be marked as “Pinned by moderator”, and Community members will see the post at the top of their Community stream until a Moderator unpins it.   This feature is rolling out gradually over the course of the day.

Three awesome new upgrades from the Google+ Communities team - enjoy. :)

Communities improvements: more notification & moderator controls

Today we're rolling out two of the most highly-requested Google+ Communities features:

1) In settings you can now turn email notifications on or off for community posts: google.com/settings/plus.

2) We're introducing a new moderator view that puts flagged posts in an out-of-sight "spam folder." This way moderators can enjoy their communities without distraction, then manage flagged content only when it's convenient.

Finally, a quick PSA: starting today you'll need to pick a category when posting to a community. This'll help direct content to community members who will be most interested.

As always, keep the feedback coming! #googleplusupdate___Three awesome new upgrades from the Google+ Communities team - enjoy. :)

Moving on to the next adventure

It's been almost 6 years since I joined Google, and yesterday was my last day. It's hard to describe just how much I've enjoyed the experience of working with (and learning from) amazing colleagues and good friends. While I'm excited about what comes next, I'm going to miss Google immensely.

In my time at Google, I've been privileged to have worked on a number of meaningful things: Launching Google+ Communities, birthdays, managing YouTube's watch page and player, social strategy, homepage, channels, and more. I'm incredibly excited about Google+'s future and the company as a whole, and can't wait to see what's next.

Next for me: I'll be trying my hand at starting a company. It's something I've been excited about for a while, and it's a great time in my life to give it a shot.... more »

Another new launch I think you guys might like. :)

Communities can now enable or disable the “Ask to join” button

One popular request has been to allow communities to change whether members need to be approved before they can join a community. Today, we’re happy to announce that we're giving moderators the ability to make that change - even after the community has been created.

Public communities can now change between “anyone can join” and “ask to join.” Private communities can now change between “hide it from searches” (invite-only) and “people can find it and ask to join”. (It’s important to note that this doesn't allow communities to change between private and public.)

To see it in action, click on the gear icon on the desktop’s community page, select 'Edit Community', and scroll to the bottom.

Let us know what think!

Fantastic tips from the G+ community about how to use G+ Communities - especially for businesses.

Google Plus Communities Tips And Resources For Businesses!
#googlepluscommunities

What makes G+ #communities  such a great idea for #smallbusiness  is the fact that these intranet based tools are like Forums and Facebook Groups but better... way better!

Some of the main features that really pop are:

1. About section with links to your website, G+ Page, or profile.
2. Easy to set up categories.
3. G+ Event integration.
4. Community Hangouts. Awesome add on!
5. Search engine friendly when the community is public.

I recommend all entrepreneurs and marketers to join communities relevant to their interest and industry, if not create your own one.

If you want to grow your community don't just try to invite as many people as you can, instead focus on:

- Posting high quality content.
- Stay on topic.
- Show your post by re-sharing it on your Page or profile.

The quality of the content will attract more members with the same interest or passion.

When communities were introduced to G+ (http://goo.gl/lQwnFY) many people, including me, got exited. Because this was another way to keep in touch with what we really love or have interest on learning more about.

-----
Here is another great article by +Social Media Today that have some very good points:

1. Posts with a Google+ community can receive 'plus ones' from other members and can also be reshared to circles or other communities.

2. Posts within a community are indexed by Google and will be found in organic search results. The posts can also gain and pass page rank.

3. A really nice feature of Google+ posts to a community is that you can edit them at any time.

4. You can use hashtags within a post content to tie posts to specific searches on the platform.

5. By default everything you share with a community is also shared to your main public page but you can change this setting, to enable you to share something with a specific community that doesn't appear on your profile page.

6. With Google+ communities you can view posts in a specific community stream rather than your main stream. These posts are much more focused as you would expect, often I switch to a community stream rather than my main stream to focus on say the latest Google+ news posts.

7. In Google+ communities there is also the ability to create categories and allow posts to be allocated to these specific categories. These categories can then be displayed individually.

Community member pages now show who's in your circles

Hey guys, a quick upgrade to Google+ Communities based on your great suggestions and feedback: Now you can easily spot who in a community is in your circles, and who isn't. (This especially makes it easier to add everyone in a smaller community to your circles.)

Just visit a community's member "see all" page, and look for the icon in the lower-right of each member's card.

Hope you enjoy, and let us know what you think!

Community tip: Use category counters to track what you've read

Once you've joined a community, the counters on the left hand side help you keep track of how many new posts are in each category since the last time you've visited.

Previously, if you started on "All posts," these numbers would reset once you chose a category to dive into. Now, based on your feedback, we're happy to say that these will stay active as you click through to new categories (until you leave the page and come back again).

This looks like so much fun - a 40 minute zombie obstacle course at San Diego Comic Con - where you can choose to play as either a survivor ($60 with discount), or a zombie ($80).

I'm a little surprised that the zombie tickets are more expensive - does that mean they're in higher demand? Sure, you get to stay on the course for 2.5 hours instead of 40 min, and you get a sweet profile pic of you in professional zombie makeup, but aren't zombie flicks popular because you get to imagine how you'd survive a zombie apocalypse?

(I suppose they probably need relatively few zombies to service the entire course at fixed points, and then they can pump a ton of survivors through at intervals.)

Exciting launch going out over the next few days: Find great new posts on Google+ based on what your friends +1.

Discover posts that your friends have +1’d

Many of the best photos, articles and videos we find online are the ones recommended by friends. So we're making it easier to discover these recommendations in your Google+ stream. Starting today:

- We'll occasionally highlight posts that were +1'd by people in your circles
- And if you +1 a post, we may highlight it to your friends as well

Circles help you control who can see your activity, as well as what appears in your main stream. So with today’s launch:

- You can visit your settings to decide who, if anyone, might see your +1s highlighted in the stream: http://goo.gl/CtZXk
- In all cases: friends will only see +1s and posts they already had permission to see, we’re just calling extra attention to them
- And of course: if you’re seeing too much activity from a given circle, you can always turn down its volume, or exclude it from Home entirely: http://goo.gl/EFLOy

We're rolling out this feature over the next few days, so look for the new “+1’d this" header, and let us know what you think!

Communities: You can now use notifications in 10,000+ member communities

To help stay on top of your favorite communities, you can receive a notification for every new post - just toggle the notifications bell within a community (see photo below). But, when we first launched G+ Communities, this bell was only available for communities with fewer than 10,000 members.

Now, we're happy to remove the 10,000 member limit; if you want to start receiving notifications again for larger communities, today's your day!

Astronaut +Chris Hadfield performs in Ottawa on Canada Day

I'm so thrilled to have just seen former I.S.S. commander Chris Hadfield perform live during the Ottawa Canada Day celebration concerts.

He performed, among other songs, Chris Hadfield and Barenaked Ladies: I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing) along with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies. He performed Space Oddity earlier in the day, too.

Happy Canada Day!

We just rolled out brand new profile, page, and community badges along with an embeddable Follow button for your site that are designed to express and connect to your Google+ presence.

They come in several different form factors and two themes (dark and light) and better yet — are Retina-ready by cleverly relying on SVG for the G+ logo.

Add them to your sites now and post a link in the comments so +Raj Iyengar (the PM) and I can take a look!
