What started as a "don't spend too much time on it" project for learning Unity has turned into a finished product. Not the most spectacular of games, but it does what it's supposed to do :)

Currently extending one of the game projects from the book "Unity In Action" by Joseph Hocking. It's already received a facelift, additional cards, and basic UI buttons. Right now I'm working on adding persistence (game saves) and adding my own little twist into the mechanics.

The book has helped solidify some concepts I was struggling to understand in other engines, as well as spoiled me with lots of tips on how to get into a more comfortable workflow quickly.

Anywho, we'll see where this goes. I have two other projects to make some progress on as well, so I can't spend too much time on this one :)

Some interesting data. The easy guess is that if new graduates are having an easier time finding work, that the economy (as we private citizens think about it, not in stock market terms) is improving.

Here's hoping the numbers continue to rise :)

This was definitely hard to read. Games are supposed to be fun for all involved. ALL involved, not some select few, not some "special class" of gamer. ALL. It's sickening to read/hear about people being mistreated during activities which are supposed to be building communities and making people feel good.

Gamers of all stripes shouldn't need to resort to bringing a posse of security to make sure people keep their hands and other body parts to themselves. If your gaming community is only safe for one group, then it's not safe and it's most definitely not a gaming community worth being a part of.

Thanks to +Tshaka Armstrong for sharing, hopefully more people step up to try and keep their gaming groups safe and fun for everyone.

[Batman vs Superman: No spoilers]

Yesterday I was able to get to the theater to see Batman vs Superman and it took me about a day to process it. When I left the theater I didn't regret having seen the movie, but I was definitely disappointed. Here's why:

1. It felt like several TV shows taken at once: This was "Batman Reboot: HBO edition", "Man of Steel 2: High-end Netflix edition", "Where is Wonder Woman?",  and "Cinema Sins Trailers: Justice League intros".

2. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor was not given the screen time to really show those chops: I actually was on my way to being impressed with this Lex Luthor portrayal, about 5 more minutes of his dialog would have sealed the deal, but really, you don't see much more of him than you see in the trailers.

That's sad considering his plans and their execution were really good, but then it's like the heroes completely missed anything he did save for two points in the movie. I've said it once, I'll say it again, heroes are only interesting if their villains are interesting. Lex Luthor is one of the most interesting DC villains, he should have had more of the center stage.

3. Wonder Woman: Same issues here as with Lex Luthor, except to the extreme. In fact, you could have scrubbed her from the movie completely and not lost anything except needing to use another character to take up the 3 minutes she did on the shoe-horned JL intro. What I did see of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was good, but save for her use as the CGI model, there wasn't any substance there because they didn't give her the screen time.

4. The key to ending the fight between Batman and Superman: There was this scene which could have been much better if less lighting effects were used that revealed a key point. It was completely ignored and instead there was a really ham-fisted approach used to getting Batman and Superman to team up which came out of left field.

5. Doomsday's origin. What a waste of yet another awesome villain. I can't say more without spoiling it, so I'll just leave it at that.

Okay, so there are a lot more things that were disappointing, but I can't really get into them without spoilers, so I'll end on what I thought went well.

1. Ben Affleck has sold me on his portrayal of Batman: Holy crap he was awesome! Not only did Ben sell me on the fact that Batman is older and more jaded (and he didn't need a cane to do it), he managed to include that bad-ass attitude that I absolutely loved in "The Dark Knight Returns". Batman is angry, his methods are more extreme, and he's consuming Bruce Wayne. Well before the end of the movie I was a fan and thinking "This is the Batman I've been waiting for in live action!"

2. Jeremy Irons as Alfred is awesome! I got the feeling that he was more of a former body-guard turned dedicated friend rather than butler turned father figure. The banter between Irons and Affleck appeared to be natural which sparked an instant connection that I cared about. There's a particularly well done scene between the two which shows just how much Bruce Wayne respects Alfred, it would not have worked if Alfred were "just a butler" or even a father figure. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this character now.

3. Lex Luthor: I grew up watching Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor and of course reading the comic books. Gene Hackman's Lex was campy, comedic, confident, brilliant, but ultimately limited in how ruthless he could be (probably because of ratings). The comics show Lex Luthor to be every bit as ruthless as you'd expect for a human villain to stand up to a god-like hero and instill fear into him while doing it. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex is a mix of the two. He is both menacing and comedic. His quirky speech-pattern that we see in the trailers is about as "light-hearted" as it gets, Lex is menacing in a "kill-em with kindness" sort of way. It's the content of his dialogue that is menacing, not so much how he says it, but there are times where how he says it lets you know immediately "You're fucked!" Hopefully he gets more screen time in later movies, because he definitely deserves more screen time to prove himself.

4. The struggle is real: Henry Cavill got a chance to show some depth to his character. He showed us a god struggling with what it means to be human and vice versa. My wife always says "It's easy going up, it's hard going down", Cavill delivered that sentiment in a big way.  You could tell that mentally, Superman was just trying to survive because while he might be bullet-proof and able to fly, he's still just a person with feelings and is just as prone to mental trauma as the rest of us.

5. The fight scenes between Batman and Superman, as well as with Batman and a group of people were really well done. For everything that wasn't a CGI-fest, that choreographer should be commended.

I do recommend that, despite the disappointing parts, you see the movie. It's a good experience. It doesn't live up to all of the hype, but that doesn't make it bad, just mediocre compared to the expectations.___

I'm so excited despite being utterly exhausted, that I don't know if I'll be able to go to sleep. I got to meet my cousins on the Tomlinson side online. Here's a really cool part to all of this: almost all of them speak Spanish too! I learned Spanish because my mom was born in Argentina and that's what her side of the family spoke while I was growing up. Since I was raised primarily on her side of the family, that's the side I know the most about. My cousins speak Spanish because their father (my aunt's husband) is Mexican and kept his side of the family close. They actually knew that me and my brothers existed because my aunt made sure to remind them of their uncle (my dad) and his kids.

Needless to say, it's been an eventful late night/early morning for me :) ___

It's 2016 people, can we please just put Flash to death already?

If you're using Flash, please upgrade your system(s). 23 more security vulnerabilities are being exploited by hackers. This is affecting Windows, OSX and Linux systems. Kicking Flash into touch is really waaaaaaay overdue. HTML5 is the way forward. Kill Flash once and for all!!

[The rumors are true]

Some of you may have noted that I was outed as moving back to California after 3 years of living and working abroad in Norway. Well, it's true. Here's the gist of what's happening:

1. The wife and kids are already living in Anaheim, waiting for me to get things sorted out here so that I can get home to them.

2. I'm starting my own software company (an LLC) with a trusted friend, business partner, and serial entrepreneur, Jeff Skinner (+Fawnlake1).

3. My company is being hired by my current employer to startup, manage operations, and develop for the soon-to-be US arm of my current employer's company (at which point the employer/employee relationship ends and the customer/contractor relationship begins).

3.a. That means I'll be operating and managing two companies at once, one of which I (co-)own!... more »

3.a. That means I'll be operating and managing two companies at once, one of which I (co-)own!

4. I'll be heading out to California in June at which point I'll take a couple of weeks of vacation so as to get situated at home before starting work again.

5. I haven't mentioned the name of the company or precisely what within the generic term "software" we'll be doing because I'm waiting on the state of California to send back all of the required certificates first. If it isn't in writing with a state seal, it's not real!

To answer some of the questions that will undoubtedly come up:

1. Yes, I've thought this through. I've been thinking about and studying how to go about running companies ever since my mom mentioned the concept to me when I was a little kid still struggling to remember how to untar source archives.

2. Yes, Jeff and I have talked about everything and trust each other to do the right thing so that the company can work. We both have the same goals with regard to running a business and we both very much agree on how to go about achieving those goals.

3. Yes, my boss agreed to this. I won't go reciting international tax codes, but suffice it to say that everybody saves and makes money under this arrangement as opposed to being an employee of a foreign company (long-term) living in the US. California has an excellent corporate tax rate and a bureaucracy that I can easily navigate, which helps quite a bit with day to day operating costs versus the alternative of being double-taxed by two countries (for me and my boss). This works for all involved.

4. No, I'm not ready to go hiring people at this point. The second I am ready to do so, the relevant people will be contacted and if more people are needed, I'll be loud about it.

5. Yes, my wife is totally okay with this. One of her dreams is to see me realize my own dream, especially when it could finance her other dreams :)

6. We chose California because we have family there, I have lots of connections, and we don't have to feel depressed about living close to the beach but being unable to go because it's freaking raining, snowing, hailing, or otherwise too cold all of the time (even in the "summer"!!!). Me and my family are California natives, we require a coastline and an ocean in which we can actually swim and surf.

So, yeah, that's the gist. More details will be coming as it gets closer to June. Until then, I have tons of work to do, starting with getting this logo looking the way I want it to.

Wow, my company's registration in California isn't even final yet and I'm already getting "new business" spam. I guess that's a good sign? :)

Three conversations in three different languages simultaneously o.0

I'm probably butchering the grammar of at least one of those, but things are being understood well enough :P

[I Highly Recommend This]

I've been using the +Vivaldi Browser for a few months and am very impressed, so much so that in all of that time, I've neglected to open Chrome at all.

There are lots of features to mention, but that's what their website is for, so I won't go rehashing it all here. Suffice it to say that it's worth taking a look at. There are of course some integration features that the team hasn't been able to implement yet (such as email), but those things are on the roadmap and the team has been very open about their progress and how they are prioritizing work.
