Nerds, geeks, gamers... this may be one of the toughest things you read today. Men, I ask that you stand with me and if you  EVER see any behavior like what the gal in this article outlines, you call out the offender right there on the spot. Pardon my French but I defy some dipshit to try any of that in my presence!

From the post:
"In every discussion of online harassment you will find men telling women to call the police. What you don’t hear is the police telling women to stay away from gaming communities for their own safety. What would gamers say if they knew that police told women to avoid game stores the same way they avoid frat houses?

“Why is this so important to you, anyway?” The officer is blunt, but I appreciate it.

“It’s my hobby. I love it. I’ve been doing this for twenty years.”

Her response cuts me to my core, “Findanother hobby or... more »

Claustrophobia is getting some love. In the attached screenshots, I'm slowly working the environment toward the look and "feel" I see in my head, as well as prototyping some initial room interaction behaviors with Unreal Engine 4's visual scripting interface before translating that to C++. I definitely have a long way to go, but I'm getting more comfortable with the tools UE4 provides :)

[Suicide Squad: Review]

Spoilers ahead!

Last Friday I went out with the wife and kids (tweens) to go see Suicide Squad. As a long-time fan there were plenty of points where I could easily be disappointed, but despite my disappointment, I had a lot of fun.

Here are a few things which left me scratching my head:

1. All that hype on The Joker and he wasn't the primary villain. Really, you read that correctly. Enchantress is the primary villain, with her brother, who is essentially there as muscle and as a way of subverting Amanda Waller's "I WIN" button by somehow "powering-up" Enchantress despite her missing "heart." The narrative of Enchantress breaking free of Waller and then seeking revenge was not lost on me, but it's not a primary story, it actually rates as a side-plot and should have been treated... more »

Enchantress is the primary villain, with her brother, who is essentially there as muscle and as a way of subverting Amanda Waller's "I WIN" button by somehow "powering-up" Enchantress despite her missing "heart." The narrative of Enchantress breaking free of Waller and then seeking revenge was not lost on me, but it's not a primary story, it actually rates as a side-plot and should have been treated as one. On top of that, the creators of the movie didn't actually explain what all those fancy visual effects in the sky were meant to do beyond "that looks bad" and "looks like she's trying to destroy the world." It could have been a great scheme from an interesting character, but without David Ayer's full-range of directing chops at work, it fell flat. The villain we wanted to see (The Joker) was given roughly 20 minutes of screen time, maybe, if you round up. What a waste.

2. We get it, the girls are hot, now let them act. In typical Hollywood fashion, in an effort to cater to 12 year-old-boys and dirty old men everywhere, good luck finding a shot of Enchantress (not her alter-ego, Jun Moone) in super revealing attire and sensual poses. Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) was made to show off her butt as often as possible, just to drive the point home that "Hey! She's got booty shorts on!" The problem with all of that was, they spent so much time focusing on (painfully obvious) visual sensuality that nobody noticed that Harley's thick Brooklyn accent was non-existent through most of the movie, which is okay if that's what they're going for, but then they have her toss it in there for a few key lines (jokes) as if to remind us all that yes, this is actually supposed to be the Harley we know, love, and pity. In the meantime, save possibly for Harley, there were maybe a total of 5 minutes of female character dialogue, with the stark exception of Amanda Waller, who stole the show (more on that later).

3. Inconsistency in Rick Flag's motivation. On the one hand, he's Amanda Waller's top operative, on the other, she's manipulating him into being her top operative, and then somewhere down the line, he had no idea any of that was going on. At one point in the movie, Waller talks about how she recruited him and keeps him on a tight leash. Throughout the movie he knows who she is and is taking orders from her, then, toward the end, it's like he's surprised that he's been working for her at all. The Rick Flag of the comics is not an idiot and knows precisely why he is doing the things he does. This incarnation of him seemed to forget what he was doing at times, and why.

4. I couldn't understand what Killer Croc was saying. I didn't expect much out of Killer Croc's character in the film, being as how he's meant to be a meat-head, but you know the film prosthetics are too much when you can't hear individual words save for one scene in which he declares "I'm beautiful", I think.

5. Harley was the most sane of the bunch. Yep. The one character next to The Joker whom we would expect to be utterly insane was the voice of reason through much of the film (save for a few jokes and one-liners). She literally made the most sense of any of the characters next to Amanda Waller. It's like the writers hadn't grasped any of the source material for the character and rolled with it. Bravo, writers, bravo.

6. It was rated PG-13 Take some of the darkest characters in all of comics, put them in a group known as the Suicide Squad, in a movie named the same, and then gimp what you're allowed to do by honoring a PG-13 rating. That's what the team did and because of that, I set my expectations about ten notches lower.

Okay, enough with all of the negativity, let's talk about what made the movie fun, because despite those five points above, there's lots to enjoy.

1. Viola Davis was born to play Amanda Waller. She stole every scene for me. Amanda Waller (for those who don't know) is essentially DC's version of of Marvel's Nick Fury. She puts Nick Fury to shame. She is a total badass and has been known to shut Batman the fuck up. This is a woman who is so manipulative and subversive in order to achieve her goals, without conscience, that if there's a fear you can think of, she's probably exploited it in heroes and villains alike somewhere in the comics. She makes Nick Fury look like a child. Viola Davis absolutely nailed the role and gave me chills several times. It was awesome to see such an awesome portrayal of such a ruthless character.

2. This is The Joker I was waiting for! Jared Leto is The Joker. With Jack Nicholson we had a menace to society dressed in dark comedy. With Heathe Ledger we had an agent of chaos. With Jared Leto we have chaos, we have a menace, a sadist, a gangster, and a truly out of control criminal genius just waiting to steal the show. Ten more solid minutes of screen time and I'm sure that more people would have been convinced. He was awesome and in every scene where he appeared I found myself asking (in a good, excited way) "Holy shit what is he going to do next!?!" I really hope that Suicide Squad's failures don't squander this golden opportunity to see The Joker in all of his gory glory in another DC movie.

3. Will Smith was on point as Deadshot. I went in thinking "Great, Will Smith is going to re-hash 'Bad Boys' again..." He didn't, he absolutely delivered and while the more noble Deadshot is different from the comics and animated movies I'm used to, that's not a bad thing. He was just the right kind of arrogant, just the right kind of obstinate, and despite only 2 minutes of screen time in the mask, was just the right kind of cool. I really hope to get to see this Deadshot again.

4. Jokes galore All of the jokes were well written and well executed. The humor was perfect, including the ones which didn't require character dialogue, such as the opening credits when Amanda Waller is being introduced to the tune of Sympathy of the Devil by The Rolling Stones. I had a good chuckle at that one. That type of humor helped to offset the darker parts of the story nicely.

5. The fight choreography was excellent There were a lot of fights in the movie (duh!), and all of them looked great and were easy to follow. No "shakey cam", no "cut so fast you miss what's happening", just the right amount of chaos and acrobatics sprinkled with each character's individual flavor.

6. Each character had a decent amount of time to be introduced. Of course some characters received more attention than others, but so far as introductions go, no newcomer to these characters was lost so far as who the characters were. My wife has heard some of the names thrown around the house a few times, but she's not read the comics and could be counted among the newcomers. She kept up just fine and at the end of the movie said "I feel like I know these characters now!" Essentially, she became an insta-fan.

In conclusion, while a lot of die-hard fans will have plenty of reasons to be disappointed, the movie is still worth the price of admission and there's fun to be had. It's impossible to be 100% true to the source material for every character, and while there were some missteps, overall the cast and crew did a great job. Did they use my preferred villain? No. Did they fail in a few areas with regard to the story? Of course, but there's fun to be had and of fun there was plenty in this movie. Do yourself a favor, take the hype of the pre-release, drop it, and walk into the theater with the understanding that this isn't going to be this year's Guardians of the Galaxy or Deadpool, and allow yourself the right to laugh with the Suicide Squad.

Also, there's no additional scene after all of the credits, just one after the initial animated credits. This isn't a Marvel movie.___

My D&D (5e) books arrived today!

It had been several years since I played even semi-seriously before this passed Saturday. My daughters have been interested in D&D for a while now and we started playing last week, but I was really slow at DMing for them because it has been so long. Now, I've found a group which I can play with comfortably (Adventure League play at the same shop where I play Magic: The Gathering) so as to get used to playing again, and I have the books for reference and to get up to speed on the rules and mechanics again.

That means that I'll get to DM one day out of the week for my kids and actually play at least one day out of the week in order to satisfy my own need to get out and do something.

Good times!

Currently extending one of the game projects from the book "Unity In Action" by Joseph Hocking. It's already received a facelift, additional cards, and basic UI buttons. Right now I'm working on adding persistence (game saves) and adding my own little twist into the mechanics.

The book has helped solidify some concepts I was struggling to understand in other engines, as well as spoiled me with lots of tips on how to get into a more comfortable workflow quickly.

Anywho, we'll see where this goes. I have two other projects to make some progress on as well, so I can't spend too much time on this one :)

Some interesting data. The easy guess is that if new graduates are having an easier time finding work, that the economy (as we private citizens think about it, not in stock market terms) is improving.

Here's hoping the numbers continue to rise :)

My daughter has been using this app for a while and last night I decided to give it a shot. So far we've made a few little videos together (despite being in different countries) and it's been a blast.

This is quickly going to become the "go to" app for parties if it hasn't already :)

Here's my response to the case going on between "Spirit" for their song "Taurus" and "Led Zeppelin" for their song "Stairway to Heaven".

Go ahead and try every single artist that ever used that chord progression. Just try it.

My next tattoo :)

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.

This was definitely hard to read. Games are supposed to be fun for all involved. ALL involved, not some select few, not some "special class" of gamer. ALL. It's sickening to read/hear about people being mistreated during activities which are supposed to be building communities and making people feel good.

Gamers of all stripes shouldn't need to resort to bringing a posse of security to make sure people keep their hands and other body parts to themselves. If your gaming community is only safe for one group, then it's not safe and it's most definitely not a gaming community worth being a part of.

Thanks to +Tshaka Armstrong for sharing, hopefully more people step up to try and keep their gaming groups safe and fun for everyone.

Her response cuts me to my core, “Find another hobby or you’re going to die.”___This was definitely hard to read. Games are supposed to be fun for all involved.
