Jean-Marc Luna36,938My buddies (432/1)of the G+ villageI am happy to share (finally) my first big circles (432/1 and 432/2) with you. It is also a way to thank you and to inform you of my consideration. You will find in these two circles all the people I follow regularly since my first steps on Google+ and which accompany me for soon two years in this beautiful adventure, bringing every day, by their sympathy, their humor, their knowledge, their generosity and their open-mindedness, a bit extra to my everyday life.I do not know everybody, I have crossed the path with some, I communicate more with some and many people became friends, thing which I did not expect by landing here. When I began, I was lucky enough to discover new interesting people, thanks to the system of circles sharing, and I hope that these both will be for you of the same utility. If you add a “plus”, maybe it will have an impact on climate change,if you share this circle, maybe Putin is going to get married with an ukrainian women in 2014,if you include me in your circles, maybe it will solve the problem of hunger in the world,Maybe ... but in fact, nothing is sure ;)A good day to all :)With a special thought for #dirktalamasca   #sharedcircles   #circles   #circlesharing  2014-03-31 15:25:36432632958CC G+

The Fires of Hatred

This is one of those posts that I'm not sure I should publish, because it's personal, and the topic is complicated, and I don't feel that I have the historical/political expertise to do this any justice. But staying silent is harder so...here goes.

Pulling a Fast One on Cancer

There is a report making the rounds on social media that really needs to be explained, because as usual the media hype is distorting the findings. The article in question was published in the Cell Stem Cell journal, and is #OpenAccess (http://goo.gl/pnoiwa). I will explain the background, what these results mean, and more importantly, what they don’t mean.

✤ Traditional chemotherapy is toxic to cells. The only reason traditional chemotherapy works is because it kills cancer cells faster than it kills normal cells. The side effects from chemo often happen because normal cells are also affected. One such side effect is the suppression of the immune system. This happens because chemo damages adult stem cells too, which impairs tissue repair and regeneration.

✤ Blood stem cells (known as hematopoietic stem cells) arerespon... more »

Can Dogs Detect Cancer?

+Nick Kai Nielsen  tagged me about a recent article on the Guardian about a story where a woman's assistance dog detected her breast cancer (http://goo.gl/WXkfJj). The story is remarkable.

"One evening in November 2011, I was at my computer when Mia leapt on to my lap and nuzzled into the flesh at the top of my left breast. She closed her eyes and licked furiously. That frightened me because it's what she does when I have a bruise or cut. I had an ultrasound within a week and, sure enough, there was a lump that a biopsy later confirmed was grade 2a breast cancer"

Cancer detection through dogs is not unheard of. What is the theory behind this approach? We know that dogs have extremely sensitive noses, and it has been reported that bloodhounds have upto 4 billion olfactory receptor cells, compared to just 5 million in a human.... more »

French Apple Tart

I've been craving apple tart for quite a few days now so a relatively free Sunday was an ideal opportunity to get baking again. The recipe is fairly straightforward, and the results are worth the wait. Best consumed with some vanilla ice cream, or some custard, while watching the football :)

The Cancer-resistant Blind Mole Rat: Clues from the Genome

Although the Naked Mole Rat and the Blind Mole Rat have similar sounding names, they are not close relatives. The two species diverged over 70 million years ago, and blind mole rats are more closely related to rats and mice than to naked mole rats. But both these species are resistant to cancer; in over 40 years of studying blind mole rats, not a single spontaneous tumour was recorded among thousands of captive animals. Intriguingly, the two animals have evolved this resistance independently. Studying the mechanisms for cancer resistance in these two animals can therefore provide a deeper understanding of how cancer arises at the cellular level. The recent publication of the blind mole rat's genome sequence (http://goo.gl/CxlnDH) provides some intriguing hints about these mechanisms.

The Boring Parts of Science

A recent conversation with a friend brought up a topic I've been thinking a lot about - science communication using social media. It was sparked by seeing a tweet from a science communicator who asked the question "are science communicators who only discuss science that boring in real life, or is it a choice?".

140 characters isn't nearly enough to discuss this topic, but it did make me consider how I feel about this. Bear with my jumbled thoughts as I attempt to sift through them.

First, scientists are real people - this means we have personal lives outside of our work. We have hobbies, interests, pets and families. We frequently write about our gardens, our culinary adventures, our personal trials and our accomplishments. Part of the challenge that comes with making science accessible to the public includes making... more »

The Hallmarks of Cancer: 8 - Tumor-Promoting Inflammation

After a too-long hiatus, here is my eighth article in this series :) The Hallmarks of Cancer are ten anti-cancer defense mechanisms that are hardwired into our cells, that must be breached by a cell on the path towards cancer. The Eighth Hallmark of Cancer is defined as "Tumor-Promoting Inflammation". All seven previous Hallmark articles can be found here: http://goo.gl/IDGfLp

"Tobacco Killing Cancer": Say it Ain't So

There's a new research finding making the rounds on sensationalised mass media with breathless headlines about how a molecule from the tobacco plant can 'explode' and kill cancer cells. The work is actually very interesting, but as usual the #ScienceMediaHype  is not warranted. So what is it all about?

✤ Scientists were looking at a molecule isolated from the flowers of the ornamental tobacco plant Nicotiana alata. This molecule, named NaD1 derives its name from Nicotiana alata defensin 1. NaD1 is part of a group of molecules known as defensins, which are really interesting in their own right.

✤ What are defensins? They are small protein molecules found across many different species of animals and plants. As their name implies, these molecules function as part of theh... more »

"Exploding Cancer Cells" Explained

By now many of you may have seen reports of a new 'breakthrough' in cancer research resulting in 'exploding cancer cells' (http://goo.gl/MT1j7z). These reports are in reference to a new study published in the journal Cell. What exactly does this mean, and how realistic is it to expect this treatment to reach patients anytime soon?

✤ In this study, scientists focused on a very aggressive, essentially incurable type of brain cancer known as glioblastoma. Glioblastomas typically have a lot of things wrong with it, meaning most of our inherent hard-wired cellular defense mechanisms (http://goo.gl/fFw7xP) have been overridden. Even worse, glioblastomas tend to harbor a subset of cells known as 'cancer stem cells' that are resistant to treatment and can repopulate the tumor following treatment(... more »

Cancer Signalling: The Wnt Pathway

We are multi-cellular animals, and as such, our cells need to communicate with each other, so they can act in a coordinated manner in response to the environment. The basis of this communication comes from a process known as cell signalling. Various signalling molecules surrounding the cellular environment can stimulate cells to grow and divide at the appropriate time. When these carefully regulated cellular processes go wrong, cancer happens.

✤ The Wnt Signalling Pathway (pronounced 'wint') is one of the most studied signalling pathways in molecular biology.  Discovered over thirty years ago, it is also a pathway that is frequently disrupted in cancer, particularly colon cancer. What is this pathway and how does it work?

✤ In Wnt signalling, the key effector is a molecule known as beta catenin. Undernorm... more »

Our team is sharing our inspiration for becoming involved in STEM. In this post, Buddhini tells how her passion in molecular biology began in a somewhat unlikely place - after reading a wildly popular novel about DNA cloning... written by an anti-science author no less! (Can you guess the book?)

Buddhini’s tale shows the importance of popular culture in igniting the scientific spark amongst young people. She also demonstrates the central role that parents can play in supporting young girls who have an interest in STEM. Rather than following narrow cultural expectations, Buddhini has turned her scientific curiosity into a career dedicated to research and public outreach.

The Science of Slinky Drops

Watching QI is, without fail, a great way to learn new things that make me go... "Hah that's quite interesting!" (yeah, you saw that coming!). This time Stephen Fry was talking about slinky drops, specifically how the bottom of the slinky does not move when it is released from the top. See the image below.

How does this happen? Unsurprisingly, gravity is involved. When we drop an object, we remove the force supporting it that balances the weight of that object, so that it accelerates towards to ground due to gravity. So far so good. But there are additional forces at play when it comes to a slinky.

The hanging slinky is 'stretched out', or under tension, because of its own weight. The slinky is in equilibrium, so the tension equals the weight. When released, the tension changes, disrupting the equilibrium. This change... more »

Why Don't Naked Mole Rats get Cancer?

Naked mole rats are the most fascinating of creatures. There are many reasons I say this, but today I want to focus on one particular feature about them that is just an amazing example of how weird and wonderful they are. Naked mole rats are extremely resistant to cancer - tumors have never been observed in them. How on earth do they manage this?

✤ Before I explain the exact mechanism, we need to go over some basics. A tumor is an aggregation of cells. Cells generally don't like to be too close to each other - in the lab, if a petri-dish has too many cells on it, the overcrowding makes them stop growing. We call this contact inhibition. The cells sense that they are too close to each other and secrete signaling molecules into their surroundings known as anti-growth factors. These molecules signal the cells tos... more »

Mantis Shrimp and the Technicolor World

Pretty much everyone has seen the fantastic Oatmeal comic about the Mantis Shrimp by now (http://goo.gl/ZgX7pZ). Because the mantis shrimp has such amazingly complex eyes, we assumed that they would see the world around them in an unimaginable array of colors. A publication in the journal Science indicates that this is not the case.

✤ Mantis shrimp eyes have between 16 and 21 different photoreceptor types - in contrast, we have only 3 (green, blue and red). Why does the mantis shrimp need so many photoreceptor types, and what do they do?

✤ To answer this question, scientists designed an experiment to test the mantis shrimp's color discriminating abilities. They used a two-way choice test to train the animals to specific wavelengths with food rewards. They presented the choice to the animal using a pair of optical fibersand... more »

Outing as a Weapon: Don't be a Dick

I've been on the fence about whether I should write this post or not, but decided to do it because it feels a bit cowardly not to. I have a lot of thoughts about this topic so it's a bit of a muddle; bear with me if they appear jumbled.

Choosing to write under a pseudonym can allow you to write more candidly, but it also gives people power over you, and sometimes this power gets abused. Let me explain.

I used to pride myself on how when I'd Google my name, nothing would show up. However, I've followed science bloggers for years, lurking in the sidelines, consuming their content voraciously all the while never commenting, never dipping my toes in the actual content-creation side of it. "Sticky Balls" and Cancer Therapy

There have been several reports (http://goo.gl/JkyXkL) of a new 'breakthrough' cancer therapy that uses nanoparticles tagged with cancer killing proteins. What exactly does this mean, and how realistic is it to expect this treatment to reach patients anytime soon?

Let's go over the findings first.

✤ Scientists at Cornell University first created nanoparticles (in this case, tiny lipid droplets that were measured to be just over 100 nm diameter). Next, they attached two proteins to these nanoparticles.

✤ The first was a protein known as TRAIL. TRAIL is basically a "DIE RIGHT NOW!" signal to any cell that comes in contact with it; it induces a cellular suicide program known as apoptosis (http://goo.gl/AhV95g). The second protein was E-selectin, which is a cell adhesion molecule.Thin... more »

The Mutant Lobster

Last night the BBC had an interesting documentary (Nature's Weirdest Events) which featured a really bizarre creature; the two-colored lobster, split right down the middle where one half was bright orange, and the other half was muddy brown. How does this work?

✤ To understand this, first we need to go over how lobster pigmentation works. Normal lobsters are colored muddy brown. They get their color from their diet as they grow and develop.

✤ Lobsters feed on a diet of shellfish and other organisms, containing the red pigment astaxanthin, an antioxidant compound. It is also the same pigment that gives salmon and flamingos their pink color. So why are lobsters a muddy brown, instead of pink like a flamingo?

✤ When the red pigment is absorbed from the diet, it is laid down into the muscles that lie beneath the shell. Over aperio... more »

The Value of Repair

This is an extremely thought provoking piece from Aeon Magazine that I read over the holidays. It's about how the ability to repair our material possessions used to be the norm, and added value to them. Now we're moving away from that culture, to a place where 'opening up' a machine can void its warranty. Things have become 'single use' and disposable. I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

"Equally detrimental to a culture of mending is the ever more hermetic nature of technology. DIY fixes become impossible either physically (the unit, like your MacBook lead, is sealed) or technically (you wouldn’t know where to start). Either way, the warranty is void the moment you start tinkering. Insanely busy streets packed full of shoppers but it's still very pretty here!

Kings College

Frosty winter afternoon at King's College in Cambridge. The town is fairly empty of the usual tourists.

Project 365 Update

12 days of adjusting to life in the UK. Fewer daylight hours mean many of the photos are indoors with bad lighting. Guess I need to make more of an effort in the mornings!

The Hallmarks of Cancer: 7 - Genome Instability and Mutation

The Hallmarks of Cancer are ten anti-cancer defense mechanisms that are hardwired into our cells, that must be breached by a cell on the path towards cancer. The Seventh Hallmark of Cancer is defined as "Genome Instability and Mutation". All six previous Hallmark articles can be found here: http://goo.gl/IDGfLp

Even though a tumor begins with a single mutant cell in our body, the cells of that tumor eventually end up differing from each other. Not all cancer cells are equal. They vary, they compete with each other, and the fittest survive to pass on their mutant genes to daughter cells which continue to vary, compete and survive. This is because cancer cells evolve. How do they do this? What is the source of all this genetic variation? As always, the full length article published on +Scientific... more »

Richard Lenski: Actuary
Richard Lenski's E. Coli Long Term Evolution Experiment is famous. He was lucky. Down the trouser leg of another more probable timeline he'd be an actuary advising insurance companies on their premiums.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escherichia_coli_long-term_evolution_experiment

In 1988, 25 years ago, Lenski's lab imprisoned 12 populations of identical E. Coli in a nutrition-starved environment and painstakingly watched them evolve. Their results were amazing. They measured rates of evolution, saw convergence among distinct populations and, conversely, saw one group technically evolve into a new species. Evolution in a bottle: every step observed, every transitional step preserved in freezers for future analysis.

Gosfield Hall Photosphere

Yesterday I attended a wedding at Gosfield Hall in Essex, UK. It was a gorgeous day and this Photosphere captured the English countryside that is so famous here :-)

Bras and Breast Cancer

I recently came across an 'interesting' article by a Sydney Ross Singer who claims that there is a link between bras and breast cancer (http://goo.gl/WSf5oh). The name sounded familiar, and a quick Google search confirmed that he is indeed the infamous quackademic co-author for the book 'Dressed to Kill' published in 1995.

These claims are ridiculous, but rather than just dismissing them, I want to explain why they are ridiculous. First, let's go over exactly what Singer's claims are. He claims that bras are the 'leading cause of breast cancer', because they 'constrict and interfere with circulation' and therefore since lymph fluid cannot 'easily drain from a bra-constricted breast', the stagnant lymph fluid 'concentrates waste products', building up 'toxins' that ultimately cause cancer. Just... more »
