It hasn't been reported in American media yet (4pm PDT, 4/17/2017), but the BBC just held an interview with the deputy foreign minister of North Korea. This is huge - two militarized nations threatening each other with nukes. Can we stop WW3 before it gets under way?

The Deputy Foreign Minister of N. Korea plainly said "If the US is planning a military attack against us, we will react with a nuclear pre-emptive strike by our own style and method."

I'd say Trump/GOP just had their bullshit called. How will the impulsive bullying president handle this totally predictable escalation? Will the aircraft carrier group be regarded as an "aggression"? Seoul, capital of S. Korea is about 25 miles from North Korea. People living there should be very, very nervous about where Trump's... more »

Bullets and Bodies

The American public has a grotesquely unreal understanding of bullets and what they do to people. And, in a country that fetishizes firearms, that's both a problem of our own making and a profound barrier to doing anything about it.

This nation grew up with firearms. But while a significant number of people own them, not a lot have actually ever used them on another person (or had them used on themselves), esp. as the proportion of the American public that has ever served in the military, let alone in an actual war zone where there's gunfire, continues to shrink.

And when movies, then television, came onto the scene, we decided societally that we didn't want to see it. "Think of the ladyfolk!" "Think of the children!" "Why would you dwell on something so grotesque!" Rules on violence on TV, from the...

"Think of the ladyfolk!" "Think of the children!" "Why would you dwell on something so grotesque!" Rules on violence on TV, from the censorious Right and the censorious Left, coupled with lazy writing, made gunfire and gunshot wounds into cartoon images. Bang! The hero clutches a slightly bloody bicep, but staggers on, a day later back to normal. Bang! The villain doubles over, collapses to the ground, instantly dead, with but the briefest glimpses of any blood.

A simple flesh wound. A bloodless, quick, probably painless (or briefly grimacing) death. That's what we see a dozen times a night on TV. It seems so easy, so clean, so simple. Throw in that it's the "bad guys" who usually die, and the gun debate seems so straightforward. Freedom! Sure, some people die. But they're bad. Or most of them are. But the ones that aren't bad -- well, it's quick. It's a flesh wound. Or it's instant death. So, freedom!

But that's not what trauma surgeons see in ERs. And that's not what the survivors of gunshot wounds who survive the operating table know about gunshot wounds, or what it means to survive them.

This isn't an easy article to read. But it's an important one, to the extent that it's tough to have a real public policy argument when our understanding of the arguments is limited to philosophy, polemic, and TV shows.

Golden Gate at Night Banner (San Francisco) Sitrep

Back in August of 2016, I was looking at all of the amazing megabanners around the world and wondered...how cool would it be for San Francisco to have one of its own??? Quite a few of the major cities of the world have large banners...why can't San Francisco represent? This idea was discussed among the SF ENL Mission community and yada yada yada (work, life, shards, anomalies, fields, ops, travel), the banner finally came to life a few days ago! 150 missions were created with the help of many kind agents to celebrate the city that we love with the icon that has come to symbolize it all over the world? (Why else destroy it in so many major disaster action movies??? :D )

Because it became live on a weekday (a big big thank you to those anonymous faces behind the scenes who clicked "Accept" instead of "Deny" helping make this dream a reality), I decided I had to wait till the weekend to begin the journey. Initial estimates put it down as being 45.1km/28 miles...taking almost 16 hours by foot/9 hours by bike. I thought to myself, I don't need the hassle of a bike, I can do this on a human-powered scooter. :D Woke up Saturday morning...looked at my compression socks (I run half marathons for fun) but decided I'd look pretty silly with them on while pedaling a scooter...did decide to wear a runner's knee support though...and set off. Not wearing my compression socks was a bad idea, more on that later. Got to Union Square and started the banner at 9:22AM.

Ran the first part of the banner at a pretty good clip...a few other ENL agents had already tried the first phase of the banner and hadn't reported any major issues. After awhile though, I began to see that bringing the scooter was not a great idea...so many uphills...a bicycle would not have been better because so much of it is against traffic and we don't allow bicycles on our sidewalks. Still I thought, better than nothing and it'll come in handy during the final stretch from the SF Giants AT&T Park to Golden Gate Bridge.

Along the first 2 phases I encountered
1) A grandpa helping his little grandson urinate into a clear plastic bag. @@
2) A guy hugging\comforting a girl while playing with his phone behind her back. haha
3) A People's March for Science!!!! Go Science!!! A family had the coolest hats around...had to take a picture.

After encountering another ENL agent who was likewise having difficulty with a portal (mission revision coming soon), luck was on our side with a super-nice security guard. Onward I sped along, criss-crossing the city, until I finally reached the ballpark where I breathed a sigh of relief...ok...this is the final stretch. Only 40 some odd missions left. Made it to my favorite lunch spot in the beautiful Ferry building. Wolfed down some delicious beef curry stew (at Delica in the Ferry Building)...15 minutes I was back out the door. Almost immediately after I began trying to speed down Embarcadero, I had my first uh oh moment as my calf muscles had decided to start spasming. Though I'd brought water, I didn't bring electrolytes...and where were my compression socks? Safe at home. :( After resting for a few minutes, I decided to try again and found I could proceed at a very slow speed but at least I wasn't hurting. Ok...continue on.

Along the last phase I encountered
1) A huge model of Alcatraz I didn't know existed.
2) A ton of high school students in prom suits and dresses.
3) The sea lions are back at Pier 39! Did not see the Bushman though.
5) A major leg cramp at Aquatic Park where curious onlookers could enjoy watching someone furiously compressing his calf muscles with a parked scooter nearby. :D I'd never seen my calf muscles dance and pulsate on their own before....scary and interesting at the same time.

(As a side note, riding a scooter long distances is tough, I never realized this before but when you try to go fast on a scooter, you are in affect doing a squat of sorts...multiplied over a thousand, your leg tends to start complaining if you aren't in the habit of doing thousands of mini squats. I am not in this habit.)

By the time I reached Crissy Field (another area the scooter was useless in because the portals are on gravel trails), the sun was getting close to sunset...would I make it to Golden Gate bridge and watch the sun go down? With a last burst of energy...and another uphill...I finally finished my journey at 7:58PM. Got to watch the sun go down and see the Golden Gate at Night!

Thanks to my fellow ENL agents for making this amazing journey of mine possible. Couldn't have done it without you!

P.S. I know my fellow Stealth/Urban Goruckers will see that I had Goruck stuff on...unfortunately/fortunately I left my 20lb at home. Next time :P

Taibbi seems extremely dismissive of the role Russia in our election.... And looking through the lens of the failures in the Clinton campaign I can see why he feels that it was a non-issue for the outcome. I understand that. But that doesn't mean there was no Russia influence, it just means it may not have been as big of an influence as Russia would have liked. The end result is still a failure pile of an Administration and a shitbag President who cannot be removed from office (and this planet) soon enough

The truth can be more brutal than hateful lies. I imagine the truths touched on by this article will brutally haunt Clinton even more so because she will not be able to accept them.___Taibbi seems extremely dismissive of the role Russia in our election.... Excellent television. It certainly isn't an easy show to watch but I honestly think that it has taken the top spot in all television series I've ever watched.

What makes him think he'll be able to look his daughter in the eyes? Won't she see the empty soul he possesses?

I love seeing somebody else walk right into a tree branch cause they're looking at their phone. Not because I like seeing others get hurt but because it shows me that I'm not the only one.

FUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK

People living there should be very, very nervous about where Trump's warmongering has led.

People on the West coast of the USA, like me, are also vulnerable to being nuked by N. Korea (delivered by a cargo freighter, not a missile).___FUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK

+Niantic Inc. you seriously can suck a big fat dick. I've been banned for some BS again. I've done absolutely nothing wrong (aside from the name, I'll give you that). I don't know what I possibly could have done wrong other than being better than everybody locally
