Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,571An evening of friends playing with fire and light for photographic purposes. We shall dine and sup and meander and rejoice and giggle and guffaw and wander and play.  There is never enough play. We shall gather well before sunset so as to identify appropriate spaces for playing with fire and light in order to make awesome images. Please bring food and drink to share, cameras for making images and any fire and other light equipment that you may have for a proper exploration of the photographic possibilities of Kalinga Park.Fire Spinning & Light Play2015-08-29 17:00:0010

NovoPulp1,237The Second North Flea Market in Copenhagen Sat June 13th 11:00 - 15:00 I found out at Fantasicon that this event was going on, where people turn up to sell things to the public that they would otherwise sell online. It seems to have attracted the entire sci-fi scene down here in Copenhagen so I'm going to take the NovoPulp stall down there. So far over three thousand people have said they will be attending the event, so it should help to gain us some exposure and give us a chance to the learn new things. I will be taking photos throughout the day and uploading them to the event page. So even if you can't make it you can feel as if you were there. See you at the market! :D Niamh BrownNovoPulp at Nørd-loppemarked 2 Photo Diary by Niamh Brown2015-06-13 11:00:005

Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,571I'll be celebrating my 50th trip around Sol in January 2015 and I would very much enjoy your company. We'll be starting at 4ish in the afternoon and going on late into the evening with fire spinning and other light play once the darkness arrives. Please bring yourselves, your cameras, a favourite dish that you'd like to share with others, your favourite drinks and any spinning toys you may have.  And orbs.  Don't forget your orbs. We'll be gathering where Warragul Road and Beach Road meet, down on the beach around the shelter near  the pier and groyne. With many thanks to @111907656136306657088 for the banner for this event - I'm sure you'll recognise the fire spinner from our #BrunswalkWithFire  from 2013. The Rantz and the Mario will be doing special fire play - just because we can. More details as they happen to be known. PS - There are *_THREE_* pubs nearby.A Celebration of the end of the 50th trip around Sol2015-01-17 16:00:0034
Paul Pavlinovich24,946Now that summer is nearly here I think it's time to return to St Kilda for a summer meander. Have some munchies before the walk. We'll have the usual wander and click but if anyone wants to wander with me I'm happy to explain what I'm doing and why. If the light and sea are favourable I'll be using black glass for long exposures near the pier. I may use it again at Luna Park to make people "go away" for the facade shot. Depends how much light there is. features will include - beach front walk - sunset by the pier - a visit to the penguins at the end of the pier - Luna Park after dark - The espy facade and the two esplanades https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z58dq65KDHgk.ka252xbBiZq4 Event updated with the meeting place (St Kilda Marina) and a link to the walk map.summer evening photo walk2014-12-05 19:00:0023
Paul Pavlinovich24,946You may shoot 36 compositions on this photowalk. you may shoot film or digital it's up to you but only 36. Can you do it? Shooting only 36 will make you really look, evaluate, think "do I really need this shot?". It will make you more deliberate. It will make you hunt for the best light and the best subject matter. You'll find it hard. You'll find it frustrating. You'll find it rewarding. You may post process via traditional or digital darkroom if you choose. If you're shooting HDR you may bracket but you must only end up with 36 images after post. I'll lead a walk around Melbourne (botanic gardens, observatory, the shrine, arts centre, ending for munchies and drinks on Southbank). If you can't walk with us, please shoot the 36 anywhere you want and share the 36 to this event. Worldwide. Go for it. The 36 photowalk - where will you shoot yours?2014-08-31 14:00:0050

Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,571Ready for another spin?  Yeah - I thought you were. _I've had a change in plans: I'll be in Melbourne again sooner than expected.  Might as well have a bit of spin, yes?_ Come one - come all: you'll get to see @111907656136306657088 do her best not to become _BBQ Fran_ and as there are no bodies of water in the area so she won't be able to push me in the drink, though I'm sure she'll be able to convince me to have a drink. I look forward to seeing you there.Sunday Poi Play2014-05-11 16:00:0026

Takahiro Yamamoto3,323,432We'll finish our 366 project in several days! Are you happy about it? Or are you sad? Anyway, who not celebrate the fact that we're completing our missions! You can share two shots this time. *Please remember just two images!* 1) Your best or most favorite shot you took in the fourth quarter of 2012 (October- December). Add #Bestof4Q12Creative366  in the comment section after you post the image! 2) Your best or most favorite shot you took for the project this year. Add #BestofCreative366Project  in the comment section after you post the image! If you think those two tags are too complicated, forget them and just two of your images! But please add your comment in the comment section after you have posted them. *And if you are the one who failed to complete the mission and are thinking you are going to do it again next year, you can add your fav one you took for the project here!* One last thing: I have made this event "public." I might have missed inviting those who are participating this +Creative 366 Project, so if you know anyone who isn't here but is doing his/her project, please invite them! The Best of Your 3662012-12-30 16:00:0085
Shiverme Timbers33,927According to the Mayans, we all die in December.  Party _Gangam Style._ *Come celebrate the end times with our Jaguar Warriors in full war plumage, wicked obsidian blades, and purpledrank for everyone!* _Watch the nuclear bombs drop, watch the seas overtake coastal cities, watch worldwide earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.  Enjoy the tornadoes ripping across Moscow and New York._ Enjoy watching the world end.  It's some SRS BSNS. *Feel free to reshare and invite relatives and G+ friends. It's the last time you will see them anyway.*     #mayancalendar   #endofworld   #maya121212   #maya122112   #endoftheworld  Mayan Apocalypse and End of Earth Itself! Hooray!2012-12-21 07:01:00195
Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych469,829It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160
Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych469,829On 2012 November 13/14, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in northern Australia and crosses the South Pacific Ocean with on other no landfall. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. For those traveling to Australia for the eclipse, please note that the eclipse occurs on the morning of Nov. 14 local time. For more information, including specific timezones and best countries to view from see NASA's website here: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2012/TSE2012.html #sciencesunday    #solareclipse   #eclipse   #NASA   @109783903175191665261 Total Solar Eclipse2012-11-13 23:00:00133

Steve Johnson33,343... At least for this event. The idea here is a simple one; Rules serve a useful purpose but they should be questioned, broken and ignored on occasion. Post photographs that break at least one photography rule (maximum of 3 photograhs) and note which rule they break in the comments.  Here are some example rules that can be laid waste to: Composition The horizon a third from top or bottom Left/right mirror symmetry is to be avoided The odd number rule Rule of thirds Technical Use of on camera or undiffused flash Wideangle for portraits (fortunately this one is becoming a thing of the past) Editing Oversharpening Over-saturating (Just about over-anything really).  Other Shooting down at kids, pets or flowers. These are just a few examples off the top of my head -there are many, many more. If you can think of others please add them in the comments. One useful rule: This is all for fun so don't over think it :)Rules are for Fools2012-09-24 07:00:0033
Jacob Dix1OK, sky lovers, share what's above you. Share your most beautiful image of the sky. Blues, oranges, reds, yellows, even greens, though it's rare. Let's have a look! Mobile or DSLR! Invite others, it'll be fun. Our last sky event produced this gallery: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0d22knulvsc94tn9bmvd6mfoj0Sunrise Sunset Sky2012-09-06 12:00:0033
Jacob Dix1For some time now I have been doing a project, an experiment, an exploration, a study in light. My object has been the sky, through the limited vantage point of my kitchen window and my backyard. The result, so far, is this album called *Sky*: http://goo.gl/phGuR Forget about that for right now. Show everyone your own sky! The best, the worst. I've seen people mention avoiding it because it means they have no "object" to shoot. Don't listen to those people. It is the most challenging palette of light there is. Let's see 'em! You have a full day and a half! Please spread the word too.Sky!2012-09-02 00:00:0023

Attack of the Offendotrons

I mean, the list is getting rather long. Scott McIntyre, Brendan Eich, Justine Sacco, remember them? Remember when Clementine Ford got a bloke sacked because he called her a slut? Remember when legions of whingers beat down the Sydney Morning Herald’s doors because Mike Carlton committed the heinous crime of being tiddly and grumpy on social media?

Outnabout

Yesterday went smoother that I could have possibly imagined, let alone hoped: all three deliveries happened at times when they were scheduled. First the bed, then my boxes which were stored in the garage of the mate I have been staying with until yesterday, then the fridge and washing machine.

I awoke at 3:14 this morning, after falling to sleep within minutes of hitting the bed in my new abode last evening. I had a coffee, unpacked the suitcases and started a few boxes. I then went back to sleeping land for a few more hours and woke to start again.

All of the boxes - except for books and cameras - are unpacked and all of the things are in their places. Except, of course, for the books and cameras: they will stay packed until bookshelves are in place.

I've now made the final trip downstairs to the recycling and rubbish rooms, getting rid of all the boxes and more than a few bags of rubbish and loads and loads of packing paper.

Later in the afternoon, +Vikki Sinnott gave me a lift to get groceries to fill up the fridge. For dinner, I've made kangaroo burgers and I'll be having them as soon as I shower and get my clothes ready for work tomorrow.

It's been a grand weekend and I'm sure I'll fall asleep not long after becoming horizontal: may your weekend be as grand however you choose to spend it.

4Chan Claims...

In a story that is getting more surreal by the minute, a post on 4Chan now claims that the infamous "golden showers" scene in the unverified 35-page dossier, allegedly compiled by a British intelligence officer, was a hoax and fabricated by a member of the chatboard as "fanfiction", then sent to Rick Wilson, who proceeded to send it to the CIA, which then put it in their official classified intelligence report on the election.

That's Where I'll Be

Soon, I shall be living near this bit of beauty.

Very soon.

Yes, after looking at more than +23 flats in the past five weeks and applying for eight, one of my applications to lease has been approved.

My motorbike ride planned for this weekend has been postponed until after I've moved.

Woo hoo - Bonnie and I will be in our own abode very, very soon.

Weekly recap 8/1/17

A new year we are in, yes. I hope it's a great one for everyone. People keep telling me 2016 sucked but to be honest I don't see it. I do see reminders of our own mortality as the celebrities of my generation move on but I also see the incredible year that this community has had. At the beginning of 2016 the prognosis wasn't great with limited posting and engagement but look at us now.

A new category (another one!) just for the weekly wraps has been introduced so new members can see how the community travels and to make it easier for us to look back.

Challenge
Last week's word was new, this weeks word is cell (suggested by +Trevor Smith). In this weeks challenge the interpretation of new was wide and varied with +Adam Houston showing us the first image from his new camera, +Tony Tulloch we a new bloom from a rose, +Wayne Harris with his poignant new start to life after a family member suffered, +Richard Hallford with his new tomato blossoms, and +Susan Menis with a new technique she wanted to try. Susan gets this week's cover photo for the wrap from her challenge entry https://plus.google.com/+SusanMenis/posts/TyvZsor7gue

Meetups and Photowalks

Remember to add the MPW Calendar to yours so you don't miss things https://goo.gl/iI2dND

This Week
+Ananda Sim hosted a Saturday night meander for cinematic stills in the city.
+Simon Wilson hosted a walk for the St Albans Lunar Lantern Festival.
+Greg Kerr posted a recap video of his #walkwithheart walk from December
+Paul Francis meetup for New Years at Morell Bridge
+Kelvin Morrison got a few people together for a city tour

Discussion
+Paul Pavlinovich called for theme words and got a good response.
+Simon Wilson found a new spot for next years New Year fireworks
+Paul Francis talked about the Olympus Global Open Photo Contest (any camera welcome) and also gave us some great fireworks shooting tips.
+Richard Hallford wished us all a happy new year and showed of his friends glass
+Paul Pavlinovich talked about moderating the spam queue (we get some great stuff there believe me)

Meet the Locals - Street
+R Brockett brought us a new busker from Southbank Rapatar and a female colourful singer
+Jason Boyes brought us a cute wedding moment from Hosier Lane

City photos
+Jason Boyes tried an in camera pano for the first time and brought us a vista of Port Melbourne at sunset which was quite impressive. He discussed how much easier it was than stitching later. Using similar features in my camera I have to agree, the cameras now do an excellent job of something that only a year or two ago was a gimmick feature in our phones.
+Paul Pavlinovich brought us some of the Melbourne NY fireworks from Morell Bridge shot along the Yarra which was the excellent suggestion of +Paul Francis
+R Brockett brought us some images from Elizabeth Street including one showing how the timeless Melbourne tram has merged into the future.
+Chris Hodgkins brought us a nice evening long exposure which looks like it's from the Exhbition Street extension bridge over the train lines.
+Richard M and +Terry Corbett seemingly separately at the same time visited the Royal Botanic Gardens and shared a few images.
+Siddhesh Jukar brought us the view from the Southern Cross Pedestrian Overpass (Bourke Street, more or less).
+Kwanghui Lim popped an image that made us think a little about humanity and robotics - a subject which is actually quite established in Melbourne as we have a strong robotics community and some street art imagery
+Richard Hallford brought a sunset image from Brewery Lane which is a potential urbex location and some other iconic Melbourne architectural pieces.
+Nimit Rastogi showed us an area of the city often neglected by photography up the top end of LaTrobe Street
+Trevor Smith the primly vacuumed grass out front of South Bank
+Bharat Bajaj brought a little colourful street art and some fireworks
+Frank Yuwono with his fireworks images
+Paul Pavlinovich gave a few images while shopping around for NY fireworks vantage points.
+Terry Corbett showed the juxtaposition between consumerism and its failures (homelessness) and a rainy day tramstop
+Jason Boyes +Kelvin Morrison and +Adam Houston showed a few images from their impromptu walk.

The Burbs photos
+Richard Hallford dropped what I think may be a commentary image Noir Dog and an albino possum from near his home
+Nimit Rastogi showed the old and new alongside with the old enduring the modern tagging attacks seemingly unwanted and uncared for.
+Richard M got out to the Mornington Foreshore car show and to Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm
+Richard Schipper brought us cats bats and sunsets
+Nimit Rastogi a sunset from Frankston Beach (do you live down there mate? Look me up)
+Tony P tried a new technique with Little Planet images
+Bharat Bajaj wandered around South Melbourne beach
+Terry Corbett spent NY at Footscray Park

Away photos
+Terry Corbett got crabs at Anglesea (glad to see them back, I thought the overfishing by my outlaws and others had killed them)
+Doug Farr went down to Mornington - maybe he bumped into +Richard M?
+Ajith Thamarakshan is back home in India and shared an image from Alappuzha
+Kwanghui Lim showed us some Singapore shipping
+Richard Reeve did what I should be doing right now and rode his motorbike out to the Acheron Way on New Years day and on a separate trip visited Toorongo Falls.
+Linda Ripper brought us a sunrise from Manly in Queensland
Looks like +Ian Crocker and +Simon Wilson might have both been at the fireworks.

Impromptu
+Greg Kerr invited us to join him at Buninyong for cycling photos
+Adam Houston invited us to join him at The Moot open day (Rover Scouts) and to the Williamstown Bay Crits cycling
+Paul Pavlinovich did a bit of category cleaning here to help people find new things

Film
Film while it never actually went away is making a big comeback of late and plenty of people are dabbling.
+Charles Strebor has an ONDU Pinhole he calls Woody and has shared some images
+Richard Hallford dug his enlarger out of the garage
+Simon Wilson shared the announcement that Ektachrome (and Kodachrome btw) are now back in production. They're made using the original Eastman Kodak plant relocated to India
+Charles Strebor talked about Hillvale as a possible cheap processor.
+Tony P shared a film street image of an oblivious young woman

I mean, the list is getting rather long. Scott McIntyre, Brendan Eich, Justine Sacco, remember them? Remember when Clementine Ford got a bloke sacked because he called her a slut? Remember when legions of whingers beat down the Sydney Morning Herald’s doors because Mike Carlton committed the heinous crime of being tiddly and grumpy on social media?

Charlie Hebdo: Two years on

On 7 January 2015, two gunmen entered the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo and murdered 12 people, including most of the senior editorial staff. The attack was in reprisal for the satirical magazine’s publishing of cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.

In defiance of this affront to free speech, the front cover of the “survivor’s edition” of Charlie Hebdo – which sold 3 million copies in 25 countries – depicted Mohammed crying and holding a Je Suis Charlie placard with the headline: Tout est pardonné (All is forgiven).

Two years on from the attack, we have compiled a reading list of articles published by Index on Censorship about Charlie Hebdo, including not just the 2015 attack but the 2011 firebombing of the publication’s previous office on the day a “sharia” edition was to hit news stands.
