Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,489An evening of friends playing with fire and light for photographic purposes. We shall dine and sup and meander and rejoice and giggle and guffaw and wander and play.  There is never enough play. We shall gather well before sunset so as to identify appropriate spaces for playing with fire and light in order to make awesome images. Please bring food and drink to share, cameras for making images and any fire and other light equipment that you may have for a proper exploration of the photographic possibilities of Kalinga Park.Fire Spinning & Light Play2015-08-29 17:00:0010

NovoPulp1,223The Second North Flea Market in Copenhagen Sat June 13th 11:00 - 15:00 I found out at Fantasicon that this event was going on, where people turn up to sell things to the public that they would otherwise sell online. It seems to have attracted the entire sci-fi scene down here in Copenhagen so I'm going to take the NovoPulp stall down there. So far over three thousand people have said they will be attending the event, so it should help to gain us some exposure and give us a chance to the learn new things. I will be taking photos throughout the day and uploading them to the event page. So even if you can't make it you can feel as if you were there. See you at the market! :D Niamh BrownNovoPulp at Nørd-loppemarked 2 Photo Diary by Niamh Brown2015-06-13 11:00:005

Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,489I'll be celebrating my 50th trip around Sol in January 2015 and I would very much enjoy your company. We'll be starting at 4ish in the afternoon and going on late into the evening with fire spinning and other light play once the darkness arrives. Please bring yourselves, your cameras, a favourite dish that you'd like to share with others, your favourite drinks and any spinning toys you may have.  And orbs.  Don't forget your orbs. We'll be gathering where Warragul Road and Beach Road meet, down on the beach around the shelter near  the pier and groyne. With many thanks to @111907656136306657088 for the banner for this event - I'm sure you'll recognise the fire spinner from our #BrunswalkWithFire  from 2013. The Rantz and the Mario will be doing special fire play - just because we can. More details as they happen to be known. PS - There are *_THREE_* pubs nearby.A Celebration of the end of the 50th trip around Sol2015-01-17 16:00:0034
Paul Pavlinovich27,318Now that summer is nearly here I think it's time to return to St Kilda for a summer meander. Have some munchies before the walk. We'll have the usual wander and click but if anyone wants to wander with me I'm happy to explain what I'm doing and why. If the light and sea are favourable I'll be using black glass for long exposures near the pier. I may use it again at Luna Park to make people "go away" for the facade shot. Depends how much light there is. features will include - beach front walk - sunset by the pier - a visit to the penguins at the end of the pier - Luna Park after dark - The espy facade and the two esplanades https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z58dq65KDHgk.ka252xbBiZq4 Event updated with the meeting place (St Kilda Marina) and a link to the walk map.summer evening photo walk2014-12-05 19:00:0023
Paul Pavlinovich27,318You may shoot 36 compositions on this photowalk. you may shoot film or digital it's up to you but only 36. Can you do it? Shooting only 36 will make you really look, evaluate, think "do I really need this shot?". It will make you more deliberate. It will make you hunt for the best light and the best subject matter. You'll find it hard. You'll find it frustrating. You'll find it rewarding. You may post process via traditional or digital darkroom if you choose. If you're shooting HDR you may bracket but you must only end up with 36 images after post. I'll lead a walk around Melbourne (botanic gardens, observatory, the shrine, arts centre, ending for munchies and drinks on Southbank). If you can't walk with us, please shoot the 36 anywhere you want and share the 36 to this event. Worldwide. Go for it. The 36 photowalk - where will you shoot yours?2014-08-31 14:00:0050

Charles Strebor (Rantz)25,489Ready for another spin?  Yeah - I thought you were. _I've had a change in plans: I'll be in Melbourne again sooner than expected.  Might as well have a bit of spin, yes?_ Come one - come all: you'll get to see @111907656136306657088 do her best not to become _BBQ Fran_ and as there are no bodies of water in the area so she won't be able to push me in the drink, though I'm sure she'll be able to convince me to have a drink. I look forward to seeing you there.Sunday Poi Play2014-05-11 16:00:0026

Add #BestofCreative366Project  in the comment section after you post the image! If you think those two tags are too complicated, forget them and just two of your images! But please add your comment in the comment section after you have posted them. *And if you are the one who failed to complete the mission and are thinking you are going to do it again next year, you can add your fav one you took for the project here!* One last thing: I have made this event "public." I might have missed inviting those who are participating this +Creative 366 Project, so if you know anyone who isn't here but is doing his/her project, please invite them! The Best of Your 3662012-12-30 16:00:0084

Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych463,556It's been a pretty disappointing year for some of us, celestial sights wise. There have been the usual meteor showers (it was cloudy for me every time), the transit of Venus (also cloudy) and several eclipses (none were visible from my area). Luckily, we still have the Geminids left. They're generally considered to be one of the best and most reliable meteor showers of the year, so hopefully we'll get a good show. They will appear to radiate from the constellation of Gemini, and you could spot up to 120 meteors per hour. The moon will be new meaning that visibility should be very good. Although Dec 13th-14th is the peak, meteors will be visible for several days before and after that so don't forget to look up this week. As usual, if you get any good photographs/videos please send them our way!Geminid Meteor Shower2012-12-14 00:00:00160
Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych463,556On 2012 November 13/14, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in northern Australia and crosses the South Pacific Ocean with on other no landfall. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. For those traveling to Australia for the eclipse, please note that the eclipse occurs on the morning of Nov. 14 local time. For more information, including specific timezones and best countries to view from see NASA's website here: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEmono/TSE2012/TSE2012.html #sciencesunday    #solareclipse   #eclipse   #NASA   @109783903175191665261 Total Solar Eclipse2012-11-13 23:00:00133

Steve Johnson33,056... At least for this event. The idea here is a simple one; Rules serve a useful purpose but they should be questioned, broken and ignored on occasion. Post photographs that break at least one photography rule (maximum of 3 photograhs) and note which rule they break in the comments.  Here are some example rules that can be laid waste to: Composition The horizon a third from top or bottom Left/right mirror symmetry is to be avoided The odd number rule Rule of thirds Technical Use of on camera or undiffused flash Wideangle for portraits (fortunately this one is becoming a thing of the past) Editing Oversharpening Over-saturating (Just about over-anything really).  Other Shooting down at kids, pets or flowers. These are just a few examples off the top of my head -there are many, many more. If you can think of others please add them in the comments. One useful rule: This is all for fun so don't over think it :)Rules are for Fools2012-09-24 07:00:0033
Jacob Dix1OK, sky lovers, share what's above you. Share your most beautiful image of the sky. Blues, oranges, reds, yellows, even greens, though it's rare. Let's have a look! Mobile or DSLR! Invite others, it'll be fun. Our last sky event produced this gallery: https://plus.google.com/u/0/events/c0d22knulvsc94tn9bmvd6mfoj0Sunrise Sunset Sky2012-09-06 12:00:0033
Jacob Dix1For some time now I have been doing a project, an experiment, an exploration, a study in light. My object has been the sky, through the limited vantage point of my kitchen window and my backyard. The result, so far, is this album called *Sky*: http://goo.gl/phGuR Forget about that for right now. Show everyone your own sky! The best, the worst. I've seen people mention avoiding it because it means they have no "object" to shoot. Don't listen to those people. It is the most challenging palette of light there is. Let's see 'em! You have a full day and a half! Please spread the word too.Sky!2012-09-02 00:00:0023

He Ain't No Real Scotsman

After scoffing down my lunch, I went for a walk around the CBD. I heard, in the distance, bagpipes.

"Oh," I thought to myself, "I'm going to get to perv on a man in a kilt".

Imagine my sadness when I located this bagpipe player.

Today's journey: 11,534 steps.

My favorite Viking.

While I have done ballet sessions with my daughter last week in Stockholm, I am spending this week in Iceland with my son. The theme, instead, is Viking, with a cape that is sewn from old curtains and a sword we did from a few pieces of wood.___+Eric Raeber, I love your work.

Presenteeism

I've seen presenteeism manifesting in places that I've worked far, far too often. By presenteeism, I'm indicating two things: 1) people who are at their working place but doing very little other than being at work; 2) people who are ill and still at their work place because they have something really important to do.

The first seems to be common amongst those who are not competent at their jobs and the second seems to be common amongst those who have tickets on themselves and think that they are so important that being sick whilst at work is more important than not passing on their illness to their colleagues.

The first I'm not particularly concerned with as I'm not the one (directly) paying their wages. The second I'm particularly concerned with as I do not want to catch other people's illnesses, regardless of how important... more »

Who actually gets work done properly when sick anyway?

And yes, I am ranting as my current work place has more than a few people over the past fortnight who have come to work when they are sick when they should have stayed home.

And yes, I am ranting as I think I have caught the bug that has been travelling around my office for the past fortnight.

And yes, I am staying home until I feel better.

Red Flags and Fallacies: Bad Analogies

One example of a bad analogy is the word “Islamophobia” which implies a similarity between irrational fear or prejudice of homosexuals (“homophobia”) and irrational fear or prejudice against Muslims (“Islamophobia”). The word “Islamophobia” trades on the morally acceptable liberal idea that individuals or minority groups sometimes need protection from a tyranny of the majority in society. For this reason, states uphold the fundamental rights of minorities and protect them by means of laws. This protection extends to minorities no matter how unpopular or despised its members may be. However, in the case of “Islamophobia” legal protection from verbal criticism is being transferred to a group that is not actually similar to other minorities at all. Religion is a set of ideas. Astronomers say they have detected "strange signals" coming from the direction of a small, dim star located about 11 light-years from Earth.

Researchers picked up the mysterious signals on May 12 using the Arecibo Observatory, a huge radio telescope built inside of a Puerto Rican sinkhole.

The radio signals appear to be coming from Ross 128, a red dwarf star that's not yet known to have any planets and is about 2,800 times dimmer than the Sun.

Abel Méndez, an astrobiologist at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, said the star was observed for 10 minutes, during which time the signal was picked up and "almost periodic".

Méndez said it's extremely unlikely that intelligent extraterrestrial life is responsible, but noted the possibility can't yet be ruled out.

Lightning Eclipse from the Planet of the Goats

Image Credit & Copyright: Chris Kotsiopoulos

Explanation: Thunderstorms almost spoiled this view of the spectacular 2011 June 15 total lunar eclipse. Instead, storm clouds parted for 10 minutes during the total eclipse phase and lightning bolts contributed to the dramatic sky. Captured with a 30-second exposure the scene also inspired one of the more memorable titles (thanks to the astrophotographer) in APOD's now 22-year history. Of course, the lightning reference clearly makes sense, and the shadow play of the dark lunar eclipse was widely viewed across planet Earth in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. The picture itself, however, was shot from the Greek island of Ikaria at Pezi. That area is known as "the planet of the goats" because of the rough terrain and strange looking rocks.

Laws of mathematics don’t apply here, says Australian PM

Mathematicians around the world are rushing to check millennia of calculations, as the Australian prime minister Malcom Turnbull has explained that their discoveries aren’t as concrete as we thought.

“The laws of mathematics are very commendable, but the only law that applies in Australia is the law of Australia,” said Turnbull.
