Catalonian Mum's Rock

So I made friends with the Mum of the owner of Xamfra Gaudi Restaurant on Valencia in Barcelona.

It resulted in the dish below being given to me with a pat on the head and a pinch on the cheek... It's a Catalonian speciality - Crema Catalana. It was so light with the sugar on top caramelised to a thin pane - so it cracked marvellously with every spoonful.

Function food done well

I've been to many weddings and functions were you just get fed like cattle...plates of batch made food which really let down the special day.

At my brothers wedding in Sirmione, Italy I was overjoyed to be presented with some of the best food I've eaten in Italy.  Not even commenting on the incredible finger food and wine selection, the folks at Tancredi Restaurant really set a standard.

The Rigatoni with Ricotta cheese sauce, citrus flavours and sprinkled with cinnamon was just delicious.  It just beat out the Risotto with saffron, bone marrow ragout and liquorice powders.

Hurrah!

For a little breakfast joy...

Although it's been lovely here in Europe, I've been faced with so many breads and croissants the past week...I miss good old crumpets!

Verdict is in...

After many contenders took to the foodie arena.... winner of most scrumptious restaurant in Rome this trip goes to, Ristorante Alessio.

The beautiful steak on a hot grill with a side of a light béarnaise sauce, zucchini, eggplant and rosemary infused potatoes was delightful   The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and was heaving by the time I waddled out after the lovely fresh off the bone ham and fresh crusty bread and almond ice cream for dessert.

A feast to cap off a wonderful few days in Rome...heading to Venice tomorrow...will report back then (recommendations dear foodie friends are always welcome!)

Sometimes dessert deserves an ovation all of it's own...

Enjoying my last night in Haworth at the Gimmerton Restaurant.

After a 14km walk across the moors I felt justified in indulging with this delightful dessert named Tear Drop.  Chocolate encasing a beautiful vanilla ice cream with cherries on top and toffee sauce.

Northerners do it better...

It's no secret amongst those I know that my heart lies in the North of England...so my first night in Haworth would not have been complete without a Steak Pie at The White Lion Hotel.

What makes this so incredible?  Braised beef in home made pastry swimming in real gravy with hand cut potatoes.  

Yeah. That's how I roll.

Heavenly Burger

The Plough Bar and Kitchen in Clapham Junction came highly recommended.  And it did not disappoint.

I had a dirty meat burger...which was just a perfect combination of good burger with enough grit to take it from gourmet to just perfection...

A lovely first day in England was finished off with a delightful meal at Isola del Sole Sardinian Restaurant in Putney.

The atmosphere was just right, service was welcoming and attentive without being intrusive.

Favourites of the night:
Pastry filled with mushrooms and parma ham swimming in a cream sauce.  This was surprisingly light and the perfect starter.  Although I had a slight starter envy moment when I saw the Burratta Mozzarella dish.

Duck with baked potatoes was just cooked to perfection. Like all the meals it was a classic done perfectly.  The portions were sized perfectly to leave you satisfied but not overwhelmed.

Hurrah!

Challenge Accepted!

In just over a week in Australia we celebrate ANZAC Day.  It is a day we commemorate the men and women who have served our country during wartime.

A tradition on this day is the ANZAC Biscuit (rolled oats, coconut, delicious!)

But this year I have been challenged to make the humble ANZAC biscuit into a cupcake... bring it on +Annie Baxter and +Shane Treeves!!
