Jon “the chef” Hole14,614All welcome to the opening of Susan Gray's new show at The Studio Got a wee preview of Susan's original illustrations for Alan Crawford's book 'Whispering Woods' last week. I love them (not just saying that to lure you to the Studio!). Well worth a viewing.  About The book is a collection of original stories about Scotland’s native trees that weave together threads of woodland ecology, lore, legend and mythology. www.whisperingwoods.co.uk / talesfromthecaledonianforest@gmail.com. Description Please note that the book is currently available on amazon.co.uk and NOT amazon.com! It is a collection of woodland tales, to help readers of all ages rediscover the magic of trees and woodland and paint a picture of their impact on Scottish cultural life. These original stories about Scotland's native trees, weave together threads of mythology and lore, herbal medicine, uses of timber and wood, woodland ecology and imagination to produce unique tales that are appealing to adults and children alike. These stories will both entertain and inform. Whilst entering into imaginary world of the story, the reader or listener will also start to become more familiar with the features of our native trees and their associated flora and fauna, leading to a deeper understanding of how species, including ourselves, depend on one another and the environment for survival. These beautifully illustrated stories evolved through a fortuitous, accidental meeting between the author and a teacher searching for original stories to read to children in the forest - stories that would both capture their imagination and enhance their understanding of, and respect for, the woodland environment. They will bring much pleasure to all who love the natural world. Using the format and style of fairy tales and legends, the book entertains and informs young school children in a new fun way, and Susan's wonderful illustrations really help to create a feel for the stories, while helping to foster in children an interest in their natural environment in an engaging new way. This Facebook page has been created and is managed by Alan's wife, Elaine Crawford; although Alan does occasionally post articles. We are delighted that the page has attracted a wide range of people, from those with an interest in trees, the outdoors, encouraging children to access the countryside, books, children's stories, herbalism, natural remedies, illustrators, Scotland, Scots living abroad, Mythology, Celts, Picts, Gaels . . . and the list is rapidly expanding. Following on from the writing of the book, Alan plans to organise guided walks and storytelling sessions, so please get in touch if you would like to receive more information. The long term plan was to produce three books of five stories, featuring Scotland's native trees and shrubs, and Alan is currently half way through the second book! Although it may take a couple of years to complete! . . . but something to look forward to! on 27/3/13, 'Jump into a bWhispering Woods - Tales from the Caledonian Forest2015-11-05 14:00:0021

Building Decentralized Public Sphere Networks as Alternatives to Monopoly

It's interesting that at several points in the article, which I enjoyed, the word "social networks" appeared in the plural, yet only one company was named.  This helps us to understand why many people in the developing countries see the word "internet", synonymous with "Facebook".  They are being 'educated' that way.

There is, in this age, a better alternative than the model described here, where a centralized entity operates in the market with a monopoly, and extracts an unequal share of the wealth from it.  Today we have excellent decentralization tools, and can easily and cheaply create distributed networks that break this inequality.  These same networks can have their own blockchains, allowing for unprecedented automation, giving the entrepreneur abuil... more »

Like the first telephone, television, or computer, the first blockchain (Bitcoin) will face loads of competitors, all offering increasingly improved features.  The difference is that this technology is Open Source, which means that innovation can begin immediately, instead of being locked behind legal walls for 20 to 40 years.

Next generation blockchains are already coming out, and are set to best all the standards set by Bitcoin.  For example, +Synereo is about to launch their Beta version of a scalable blockchain with their cryptocurrency called "Amps", which will operate on a sophisticated new "people's version" (decentralized and fully distributed to users) of the so-called Attention Economy.

This means that the originator itself will enjoy a much less dominant position, and will have to innovate itself in order to survive longer periods of time. Ho... more »

"In the last two decades, the world of publishing and distribution has obviously changed dramatically, albeit not in the way we imagined or hoped. Labels collapsed, News and Media outlets struggle to survive, and very little is left of what once seemed as the unshakable pillars of the media industry only a few years ago. But the oligopolic entertainment market, characterizing the 20th century, was not replaced, as we hoped, by a free exchange of ideas and creative work, in which artists and fans thrive, but consumed by a few, even bigger behemoths, feeding off of the decomposing corpse of a dying industry."

And Finally
The Blockchain Enabled, Distributed, Mission Driven, Ecosystem Organization

I've always viewed the blockchain through the lense(s) of the Glia architecture, so this fits my brain's view just right. This is what makes the +Synereo project so tantalizing to me.

We are in the early stages of a new chapter in the nature of work, because the blockchain will enable us to work and get compensated inside new circular economies that have their own currency units and their own work units.

This, I believe is one of the greatest themes to emerge out of blockchain technology.___ #blockchain   #economy   #community

Plenty to learn from here.

Old problems come back to haunt.
Synereo offers a better alternative

“Synereo offers a social model; one that integrates measures of compassion in its code. Our reputation mechanism assures trust in people is still required, while tying the control assigned to them in formally-verified smart contracts – making that trust much harder to abuse.”

Long thoughts to Pocket on increasing functionality of tags

TL;DR: Using a hierarchical common tagging system based on the Library of Congress classification system, possibly with tweaks, might make a small set of your most avid users quite chuffed. Please consider it.

I sent this suggestion to Pocket a few days ago, it reflects much of my own thinking on how I'd prefer to be able to use tags.

I'll also add, a week or so in, I'm finding Pocket quite nice. Probably 80% of what I'd hoped for, but that's a huge stretch above anything else. Its search, which includes full-text article search of my archive is fucking awesome. I sent Pocket a mash note on that as well.

IMO Pocket (or something very much like it) is the future of the Web browser.

TL;TL ....

I like tags. I like them, probably, too much.

I'm also not a typical use case. But: the use case I represent has very few good tools satisfying my needs. Pocket is addressing many of them. And the users who can benefit most from good such tools are likely to be communicators who can strongly advocate for Pocket. Spillover benefits to others could also be high.

I don't know how many individual tags I've created already on Pocket. I do know that I blew through Readability's limits in a day or two (around 500 - 512 tags or so). Which raises the first request:

Request: Enumerate everything. Tell me how many tags I have, tell me how many matches there are for a given tag. Computers are really good at counting. Count. Thanks.

I've mused at Ello and G+ on how to organise content. Basically: use an existing ontology. Probably something resembling existing newspaper section classifications, or just adopt the Library of Congress cataloging hierarchy itself (yes, Dewey Decimal is simpler, but it's also burdened by copyright restrictions).

Discussion and a proposed basic top-level hierarchy here:
https://ello.co/dredmorbius/post/FTpX7LWNFjtOpYGu5xRkHg

Suggested top-level classifications: Hobbies, Food, Spirituality, Health & Fitness, Business & Marketing, Science and Tech, Environment / Climate, News & Politics, Issues & Activism, Arts, Style & Entertainment, Sports, Travel, Personal

The LoCCS top-level hierarchy is specified here:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/

Another element is whether or not tags ought be hierarchical, and I'm familiar with arguments various ways (I've also worked on large public-facing infrastructures serving milliions of users, so I'm aware of scale issues):

1. Complexity confuses people: The simple answer is: any hierarchy can be flattened.

2. Creating a hieararchy takes work: LoCCS is extant.

3. Reality isn't hierarchical: True. Specifically, it's not an acyclic directed graph. But it looks like one locally.

4. People prefer their own classifications: Absolutely true. After suggesting the above, I implemented something quite different for organising my own G+ posts. Go figure. But here: providing both a standardised and personalised tagging set should allow for both individually-driven use and a useful common organising scheme.

And so forth. The particulars could be argued over for hours, or days, or weeks, or centuries, or millennia. And have.

But you'll find that news media, LoC, Dewey Decimal, and other classifications schemes tend to have a great deal in common. There may be reasons for that. A widely-used, generally workable kludge is often a useful thing.

What a good ontology does is project structure on a complex space, overall reducing its complexity and making it more manageable.

Examples: my interests span science, economics, technology, politics, news events, ecology, systems, complexity, sustainability, evolution, and philosophy.

Karadashians, K-pop, gaming, TV, cars, not so much (except where they intersect the above, which they sometimes do).

There are numerous elements within those categories which cross-link, and showing those cross-linkings can be useful.

One experiment which might be fun (and a fun Pocket feature) would be to, say, randomly select a set of richly-populated, well-tagged article archives and construct mind-maps of those sets, as the user's tagging actually represents them. I wish I could recommend some good mind-mapping software, but I've been mostly stymied by the examples out there. GraphViz is ... OK. There might be some good libraries in various development tools (I only dabble in this -- I prefer the fruits of coding to coding, largely).

Among the useful tagging structures for me are specific identifiers: country and place names, proper names of people (which may occupy two sets: the famous and the personal). Institutional or organisational names. Collapsing these into relevant hierarchies or classes can be useful.

Identifying subsets within classifications -- energy, nonrenewables, renewables, coal, oil, gas, solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, etc., is useful. A tagging system which could suggest from the hierarchy and article context (which Pocket seems to do, and fairly nicely, and, I'm quite happy to add, reflecting my own idiosyncratic earlier tags) would be useful.

In all: thinking through what tags do, how they're used, how they benefit users, how they benefit Pocket (and I don't know fully what your revenue strategies are, though I'm thinking of contributing to that), and how they might, and this I'd really like to emphasize: drive future product development by highlighting user interests and frustrations. All of this could be quite useful to Pocket.

And a small demographic of potentially rabidly enthusiastic, high-profile, high-communication users would be quite pleased.

The challenge, and it is a challenge, is providing the functionality and sophistication without burdening the casual user with a complex interface. I'll think on that though I don't have a whole lot of thoughts yet. Generally, however, the development here needs be on the infrastructure side, with hints and suggestions but not a lot of overhead presented the user.

I've been quite enjoying Pocket these past few days, hope that extends for considerably more time.___Organizing & planning for distribution of content on a network.

The Zombie Economy

In Science, a disproven theory that just will not die, and persists in the media, pop culture, or even in poorly revised textbook editions, is often called a 'zombie theory'.

Topping the list is traditional economic theory, and the political ideologies that have been attached to it.  Truly deserving of the title of zombie, because of their built-in invocation of monsters to represent anything that opposes their desires – whether they call up the red scare, or the invisible hand.

As the Industrial Age hold-outs and their cult followings die off, new digital, networked-information age systems will take their place. Many myths have been created, and even without these new alternatives, we’ve known for some time now that the models that have been used in attempts to explain these complex systems are not worth the paper they are written on.  They are used far more to mislead than to lead.

This video offers some examples of how the indoctrination of these myths has permeated through the corporate sector, which has adapted lock-step to take advantage of the information asymmetries over the past several decades, resulting in even worse problems.

“For 75 years now corporate profit, over their total value, has been decreasing. That means corporations are really good at accumulating money but increasingly worse at deploying that money, at making money with money. “

Japanese Blockchain Collaborative Consortium Formed

A total of 34 different companies has formed the Blockchain Collaborative Consortium, which is designed to educate the public on researching, developing, and investing in blockchain technology. This announcement marks Japan’s first blockchain industry organization and is a milestone event for this technology in the country.

Up until this point, there has been very little news coming out of Japan related to blockchain technology. However, the first announcement was made not too long ago about one of the major banks in the country successfully trialing Mijin blockchain solutions in a live environment.

P2P Electricity Distribution

An experimental energy microgrid in Brooklyn, New York, shows how energy-generating homes can become part of a peer-to-peer electricity system.

The project starts small: “On one side of President Street, five homes with solar panels generate electricity. On the other side, five homes buy power when the opposite homes don't need it. In the middle is a blockchain network, managing and recording transactions with little human interaction.”

The future is the trust economy -  As we get into cars with complete strangers, sleep in the beds of people we’ve never met and lend money to others on the other side of the world, a powerful new currency is emerging — and it’s based on trust. What’s striking about the shared economy is not the technology that has made it possible, but the vast changes it has triggered in society. This means no external entity has access to your information or activity and you decide who can see it at all. How do we ensure a proper transition to tomorrow’s society? Which stakeholders need to be involved and which procedures do we need to put into place to enable this transition?"

The Deep Dive into Blockchain Infrastructure

"Introduction to COALA CORE (“Coordinated Open Research Effort”):  Blockchain is only one piece of a larger protocol stack necessary for its deployment. COALA CORE aims to identify the decentralization technology protocol stack with the eventual aim of contributing core research critical to the development, deployment, user and hosting ecosystem for decentralized applications."

And covering the "Ecosystem Building Blocks", from protocol layers and Identity/Privacy, to blockchain enabled platforms.  Good stuff!  I'll be trying to get some videos up of the coverage.

Beyond, or at least in addition to, the fairly standard social-change aspirations of users of blockchain technology like decentralization, the status quo industries like financial services can take advantage of the efficiencies, and security benefits too!

Of course, they realized that Bitcoin's blockchain was not going to work for this, so they've come up with their own proto-type.

These same networks can have their own blockchains, allowing for unprecedented automation, giving the entrepreneur a built-in team of executives, capable of executing contracts, paying suppliers and workers alike, and much more.  Middlemen are replaced with Apps.

These networks respect an individual's rights; privacy, ownership of data and content, even being able to operate in a truly democratic and sovereign attention economy, monetizing this scarce resource, and paying network members directly for it.  They also eliminate the need for banks to be involved in this process.

If Governments want to help people become self-sufficient, and contributors to their economies, they should import the experts and teachers needed, and initiate free scholarships for software developers, and contribute the output of these public schools to Open Source repositories, working on connecting to, maintaining, and improving these new networks.  See, for example hyperledger.org/ .

The snowball is already rolling: synereo.com, factom.org, ethereum.org, livelygig.com, maidsafe.net, magazine.backfeed.cc/, and others, with a growing host of Apps being built in collaborative fashion onto this de facto super-structure.

Having governments installing all the public infrastructure and then turning over their information economy to a big monopoly from the West like Facebook is not in the public's best interest - anywhere.

It’s an entirely parasitic arrangement in which a capitalist corporation uses its ownership of a proprietary platform to insert itself between drivers and riders and extract tribute for letting them interact with each other."

There's simply nothing holding people back from doing this themselves, and a growing number of them are.

Cue Amps and Ether..

#cryptocurrency   #bitcoin   #blockchain

Well... the theoretical (though fairly predictable) concern that bitcoin would at some point reach its limit of transactions it can handle seems to have been hit, appropriately on leap day.

Transactions are queueing up and not being processed due to hitting capacity.

Amanda Johnson does a great job diagnosing the issue and the solution... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUFsNSpQsEU ...

The likely outcome is a migration to another coin sooner than later. No doubt a setback for the move to digital currencies, but only a setback. Better currencies will emerge. Lets hope soon.

However, they do still enjoy benefits of being the leader, especially in coverage by mainstream media.

On the other hand, the media suffers from tunnel vision on this coverage, and can treat problems of the innovator as problems of the technology in general, overlooking second generation innovations that are less well-known.  The reason this is a problem is this particular case is that "bitcoin dreams" have been effectively replaced with "blockchain dreams".  The currency was certainly the main draw for this tech, but not really adequate for explaining the big picture.

Updating Network Theory

"Many of the models we've had in the past are too simple," says Moore, who dwells at the intersection of physics, mathematics, and computer science. "They don't capture the rich structure of real networks like power grids or food webs."

Networks should be approached not as static objects, but as dynamic systems that change in time, he says. Similarly, nodes and edges aren't flat and anonymous – they often have rich metadata, like location for nodes, or duration for edges – that should be incorporated into new models."

This is exactly what I have been working on lately.  The old game pieces just don't cover what the actual capabilities are, in most cases.

Normally, one would suspect "eyes on the prize" profit-making mentality, and that has not been eliminated from possibility here (there are cost savings to be sure), but this actually appears to be motivated more by "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" thinking.  Whether that's the case, or it's just incidental, this is a huge step forward for this new technology.

The Attention Economy & 21st Century News

A noteworthy article about journalism and the attention economy.

"Intelligent readers are still very much aware of how important that exercise is not only for their own interests but also for democracy and society as a whole, what we might call the public good.

At least since 2009, you can sit on a bench in a park in another country and watch revolutions, accidents, police operations and battles take place on your smartphone, with live video and audio streamed onto your screen and into your headphones.

Imagine Hemingway reporting for you with those tools at his disposal."

"Intelligent readers are still very much aware of how important that exercise is not only for their own interests but also for democracy and society as a whole, what we might call the public good.

Imagine Hemingway reporting for you with those tools at his disposal."

From citizen scientists to "netizen" journalists, fact checkers, or muckrakers, more & more people are going to be needed to service the markets of the information age, as independent nodes of the network.

Establishing trust, or in the latest lingo, "going trustless" (protocol inhibiting defaults) is a priority.  Systems to measure or create measures of trust will become successful in the coming years.

"And if you're not sure of the source of the information and analysis, or have suspicions about the source's motivations, how can you trust their information to be true?

Strange as it might seem, it is easier to address that problem than the other two, as long as you can find people who care about being trustworthy and who attempt to do serious journalism based on reality.

Within that changing environment, at once enthralling and overwhelming, the exercise of curation—the editorial selection of the news stories worthy of your attention—is fundamental, and perhaps with foreign correspondence this has always been the case."

Curators, of all kinds of content, like music, photos, articles, books, classes, or in this case, the News, will become important members in a distributed network, and become hubs for local information flows; certainly in the realm of "the last mile."

When everyone has an ad blocker, the traditional publishing model falls apart.

That sums it up better than I've seen before.

Sure signs of revolution: the meanings of words are hotly debated, and diametrically opposed between competing groups.

Here, the author's (+Kaila Colbin) writing seems motivated by sensing something is wrong with the Elite's version of "the attention economy", and that "intention economy" was perhaps not the solution.

+Doc Searls replies in the comments: Companies on the sell side can't give them that. At best they can make community and be nice in other ways. But every one of them is a silo, and that's a problem silos can't solve.

To be clear, Mr. Searls has a lot of good things to say on this topic, but I also feel that renaming it for a slightly different perspective is not the best move here.  Sometimes it's better to fight against the misuse of the term than trying an alternative.

The last Forces of the Industrial Age have gathered together to battle the oncoming freight train that is the Digital Revolution.

There are two voices describing our modern world, in the sense of a perspective of Industry and the financial Elites of the world, and the much less heard voice of the rest of the humans on the planet.  By and large, as the Elites control all the important areas of society, like Government, Media, Banking, Education, and Consumer goods, their voice is the only one that gets through to the majority of people, and our collective conscious.

It's not that we don't have other ideas, critiques, etc. in our own conscious minds, but that we are not able to communicate these to each other, due in part to the fact that we don't control the networks, and usually can only take part in small-scale, local groups.

Of course, the internet has allowed new systems to arise and to a great extent, eliminate that problem by creating large-scale global networks (somewhat limited by language).  But we have a long way to go on this, as so far, all we have are "bridges" between the Industrial Age, and the Digital one, as that revolution is still taking place.

So maybe it's not surprising that even people who are talking about this revolution, like Jeremy Rifkin, and many others that we find in the media today, talk about it mainly from the perspective of Industry, that is, of the Elites.  This is regardless of whether the author is an Elite themselves or not, or even supports them.  The "buzzwords" that the media gives high credence to are what editors base their decisions on, and they nearly always choose the messages that will not offend their sponsors, because their choice of market-based business models means that their very survival depends on it.  No buzzwords, no audience.  The sponsors are not us.

These buzzwords make it easier to control the flow of ideas because they offer bottleneck points that can be framed for manipulation of perspective - that is, that the Elite's perspective is our own.  It's not.

This is also a version of the famous "doublespeak", where for the most part, exact opposites serve as the preferred definitions of those who seek to manipulate by covert means, and take advantage of (often creating as well) Information Asymmetries.

Among those is the term "sharing economy".  Here the lines between Government and Industry are blurred even further, by Industry privatizing the Public Sphere in new ways, and then taking a cut, or 'tax' of the independent activity of the people in their network.  The dominant social networks use another method for rent-seeking, which is to collect data that can be tailored for efforts to control Attention, and sell it to the highest bidders.

Either way, what we get is the hybrid idea that we can have distributed networks of individuals pooling their capital, ideas, and social insurances (public pays for externalities while Industry is the beneficiary of the insurance claims), while still maintaining private, centralized control of monetization, "intellectual property", distribution, and management in the hands of a few Elitists.

This is working extremely well for those who have been at the right place at the right time, and the voices we hear extolling their supposed virtues notwithstanding, is clearly not the optimum that we had in mind.

The battle continues.

Networks

"What comes after networks? The 'network' has been a defining feature of human activity since its conceptualization, and has found its way into nearly all facets of life: there are social and technological networks, biological and electrical networks, media networks and theoretical networks. But there are fundamental frictions to networks, and though it may be tough to understand what a world without them would be like, that is perhaps the best reason to ask anyway."

Probably nothing comes after networks, but the act of asking this question is likely to pay some interesting dividends.

We know that Music was one of the first to be transformed by the Digital Revolution.

These shake-downs (of incumbent monopolies) will take more than one generation to take full-effect.

Digital files changed how control was exercised over music, the Blockchain will change who has control.  Middlemen are no longer needed.  Yes, that means entire industries will fall to the wayside.

That will be much better, for musicians and listeners.

Music Industry Receptive To Blockchain Technology - Phil Barry believes the Ethereum blockchain can change the music industry. To him,  it is “the current best system for building complex decentralised applications.”   Barry might know. He consulted for Courtyard and ATC Management, leading a team working on financial analysis, media strategy and user experience for the world-first release of Thom Yorke’s solo album Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes on BitTorrent. The leading-edge alternative currencies are set to affect great change.

Community-Powered Money

This is an awesome article on the amazing potential of new forms of community credit. The community might be place-based, or it might be communities of interest (as in a business-to-business network).

Technologies like the blockchain are going to open up whole new possibilities for ownership and creating highly distributed, local economies. That's what nature would do. It's time to start changing our assumptions about what we want our money to do, before we start applying the same stupid mentalities that have gotten us where we are, onto the powerful new technologies now emerging.

This article is a good place to start for understanding community credit. ___The leading-edge alternative currencies are set to affect great change.
