Andrij “Andrew” Harasewych464,691On 2012 November 13/14, a total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses Earth's southern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in northern Australia and crosses the South Pacific Ocean with on other no landfall. The Moon's penumbral shadow produces a partial eclipse visible from a much larger region covering Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. For those traveling to Australia for the eclipse, please note that the eclipse occurs on the morning of Nov. 14 local time. What's Growing At The Cottage Tuesday
Lilies. There are hundreds of varieties and I’m not sure of the one we have. Globally, they rank fourth among flowers in popularity! I didn’t know that. Because of their large, beautifully prominent flowers, they are cultivated throughout the world in many shapes, sizes, and colors. They are often put in floral arrangements for anniversaries, weddings, funerals... Some lilies have a fragrance and those that do are extracted into many popular perfumes which date back to the Egyptians. There are some species of lilies that are grown not for their flowers but for their edible bulbs. In Japanese and Chinese cuisine, the bulbs are used like a root vegetable as they contain a lot of starch. I guess I should pay more attention to those gophers, huh?

I can see why this showy, versatile flower is so popular around the globe.

The novelty never wears off
San Gregorio was once a thriving, booming community in the late 1800’s when it catered to wealthy San Franciscans looking for outdoor adventures. Back then it was a major stop on the stagecoach route from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. The town included a 10-room hotel, a couple of saloons, a Chinese laundry, and a cheese factory.

Today, all that remains is the general store. And, it’s like stepping back in time too. The general store is a saloon, post office and hardware store in one! It’s also a great spot to people watch (farmers, surfers, eco-activists, cowboys, hippies, Silicon Valley moguls, bikers, Stanford professors, moms, and dancing children)! Grab a cocktail or a beer at the old wooden bar (Bloody Mary is their specialty) then mosey over and browse through all the weird, interesting stuff then find a seat by the wood burning stove and listen to some live acoustic.

How To Cook An Artichoke (3:35)
I like to pick up local artichokes from Pescadero and leave them for our guests to enjoy. But I've discovered not everyone knows what to do with them. Fear not, artichokes are super easy to cook and most of all fun to eat! Check out our latest video to find out...

Collecting Rainwater Is No Longer Illegal In This American State http://rgn.bz/DiaP

Rain barrel owners no longer have to live in fear of fines in one Western state, thanks to a new state law that will make it legal for home owners to collect and use rainwater.

Under the previous Colorado law, property owners who collected rainwater in a barrel could face a $500 fine. The idea, among its supporters, was that homeowners violate water rights and steal water from farmers and cities by collecting rainwater.

That will change on August 1, when House Bill (HB) 16-1005 goes into effect. The measure, signed by Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper, allows homeowners to store up to 110 gallons of rainwater in two barrels.

“We’re using perfectly good drinking water for so many reasons that we shouldn’t be,” science teacher Aaron Broderick told Colorado Public Radio(CPR). ... more »

The $70,000 Solar-Heated ‘Earthship’ Home That’s Completely Off Grid http://rgn.bz/BzUs

Imagine living in an off-grid home and not ever receiving a utility bill – no electric bill, no water bill, no sewer bill. Even better, you don’t have to stockpile firewood, because your home is heated by the sun.

Sound impossible? It’s not. It is called an earthship home, and on this week’s edition of Off The Grid Radio we take a look at these unique houses that are revolutionizing what it means to live off-grid. Our guest is Craig Cook, who lives in an earthship home with his wife Connie in Canada – where temperatures in the winter often hover around 0 degree Fahrenheit.

Incredibly, their home cost only $70,000.

#Portugal
