Reports of a shooting and a stabbing at the local mall. My son is at work there. I heard from him and he's fine. He heard it was gang related. Police have the place on lock down. The 5 minutes between hearing about it and him responding to my urgent text message were the worst of my life. He called just as I was putting on my shoes to drive over there.

Hey Plussers,

A friend of mine from work got hit hard and fast by a rare disease. After 60 days in the hospital he's home, but medical bills have a way of piling up fast, even with insurance. Doug is a great guy, so if you can help him out with this GoFundMe.com page I set up for him, it will be greatly appreciated. Even $5 would mean a lot.

Signal boosting is greatly appreciated, especially from my friends with ties to the military, +Corey Shaughnessy, +B. Nevin, +Jennifer Linsky, +Lizzy Page, +Mark Thomas, and others I probably don't even know about.

Even, if you can't give, read his story. It will remind you of how fragile everything you love is.

Thanks,
Dan

3 hour flight delayed 3 hours. :-/

But one does get to observe interesting things. Like the guy behind me whose voice is a cross between James Earl Jones and Richard Simmons. He's got a Bluetooth earpiece so we can hear one side of his conversation. He's using ultimate therapy-speak ("I feel you've respected my boundaries, and I should... No, I'm not going to use should, because that's the language of bondage...") All to discuss his problems with the IRS.

Oh wait, what's this? And another delay announced. I could almost drive to Atlanta this quickly.

I just stumbled across a Google Maps feature that's years overdue. (Apparently it was quietly added in March in version 9.22. Not sure if it exists for iOS yet.) Anyway, you can now add a custom label to a pin you put on the map, which is hugely useful, especially in rural areas.

Brexit. Trump. Putin. In the next couple of years, things could go very very wrong. For the last 70 years or so, Europe (outside of a little genocide in Yugoslavia), has pretty much been at peace. This is the longest European peace for about the last 20,000 years. Without the EU and NATO, we are sure to screw that up.

Let me be perfectly clear: white people are savages. If they don't have these stabilizing institutions, they will soon be killing each other in record numbers.

So no, Trump must not be allowed to win.

Thanks,

Hey Plussers,

My wife Melissa and I are working as campaign treasurers for our good friend Aric Putnam, who is running for the Minnesota Legislature. We have an important deadline coming up -- tonight at midnight -- for our initial financial reports to the state. Things are going pretty well for a first-time candidate, but elections aren't cheap, and we need to get the word out, and getting contributions in before midnight will help tremendously.

If you care about creating a Minnesota where thoughtful people can work together to maintain those things that have made us a great place to live -- education, opportunity for all, and a great business environment -- then Aric is your kind of candidate.
Please consider making a contribution, even if only a few dollars, at www.aricforminnesotahouse.com.
Thanks!

I remember when my daughter was small. She had one of those puzzles that had shaped holes in it and a bunches of shaped pieces that fit into the holes. I remember being lucky enough to have been there right at the moment that she solved it. The look of awe, achievement and wonder on her face when it finally clicked to her that she knew what went where. She breathed in making an excited inward sigh of acknowledgement and then proceeded to put all the pieces into the right holes and then looking at me triumphant and holding the puzzle out at arms length with her beaming, grinning little face. I was proud and I gave her a massive hug and telling her so.

A few days later on a dark and freezing December night, I took my daughter for a walk in her pram with me to the local store. As I was pushing her I heard her talking to herself in frustration and struggling. So much so that that an extra blanket I had put over her to keep the cold away was falling off. I stopped the pram and I walked around the front and saw that my daughter was reaching up into the night sky. In her hand was a crescent shaped piece from her puzzle. She was trying very hard to put this piece into the crescent shaped moon in the sky and was getting so frustrated that she couldn't reach.

Yesterday, NASA reached Jupiter with Juno. I now look at the photos that have been sent back so far within it's mission with the same awe, achievement and wonder that my daughter had back then. As we get older and the more we know, the wonders that are around us seem to disappear. We all looked into the night sky as kids and wondered. My daughter could never have reached the moon that night, but as we have progressed as a species and have become more technologically advanced, reaching out into the night sky is now possible. We are travelling further and discovering more now than we ever thought that we would.

This and all of the other scientific mysteries that have been solved or found have been made possible by the people who wondered, dreamed and dared to follow their dreams and continued to solve puzzles. My hat goes off to each and every one of them for keeping the wonder alive in me and reminding me of the great things that humanity can do if we try and never give up. Especially on our dreams.

Oh, and the next time you see a small child solving something. Give them a big hug and just imagine what they may solve in the future and the wonders and mysteries that they could unlock.

So I got some more insight on the Brexit referendum from an economist friend.

Basically the referendum result is not legally binding. Rule 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon lays out the rules for members leaving the EU. Action under that rule has to be initiated by that nation's government. What that means can vary by nation depending on whether they have a PM or a president, etc. But in this case the British Parliament/PM governs it, not the referendum. So if the PM ignores it, Britain stays in.

Sigh I'm thinking that this would be seen as entirely illegitimate by many, could get that party voted out in the next election, and the new PM would be able to start the withdrawal.

There's a motion for a second referendum that's under way, but if that changed course, there would probably be riots in the street from the pro-exit camp. It isn't really legitimate to... more »

There's a motion for a second referendum that's under way, but if that changed course, there would probably be riots in the street from the pro-exit camp. It isn't really legitimate to keep asking the question until the elite gets the result it wants.

But I'm thinking that if they were to call for a quick election and either (or both) of the major parties ran on a single issue platform of ignoring the referendum result, and then won by a sizable majority, then staying in could be possible and legitimate.

It could be the only hope that they have at this point. ___

I had to drive to St Paul tonight for software training for campaign treasurers. A few observations.

First, I think Minnesota has an excellent office for election finance regulation. The rules are fair and clear, the people who work there understand that campaign treasurers are volunteers, not lawyers, and they are really good at helping average people get involved in democracy.

Second, the training taught me a few tricks, but mostly I could have learned it in a 10 minute video. Of course I do computers and budgets for a living. I'd rather have spent more time on how to pull data from the tables with SQL and pull that into the database I've developed myself, but admittedly that's not where most volunteer treasurers start.

Third, there's always got to be one person in every computer class who can't get anything to work. Ever.

Anyway, back I... more »

Ever.

Anyway, back I go on Saturday for the legal compliance part. That will probably be more nerve-wracking. I don't think I have broken any laws yet. I guess we'll find out. ___

Just learned of the death of a high school classmate. She had cancer for the last couple of years. The world needed more of her.

Went to a great show tonight. Didn't want to wade to Wade through the sea of humanity to exit through the bar, so I slipped out the stage door and walked 50 feet to my car! Winning!

Got home and realized that if you slip out the back door, you forget to close out your tab and your credit card is still downtown.

Drove back downtown to pay my bill.

On the upside, got to hang with the bass player and singer for a while, and we commiserated about the cost of kids in college.
