And this is why I am not voting:

He therefore is the truest friend to the liberty of this country who tries most to promote its virtue, and who, so far as his power and influence extend, will not suffer a man to be chosen into any office of power and trust who is not a wise and virtuous man ….The sum of all is, if we would most truly enjoy this gift of Heaven, let us become a virtuous people.

The Corruption of the Republic... No, the Other One.

h/t to +Azure Mallone on a recent post on government corruption.

One of the most powerful politicians in the era of corruption, Marcus Licinius Crassus (115-53 B.C.), not surprisingly was also one of the richest Romans. Born into a wealthy family, he acquired his riches, according to Plutarch, through "fire and rapine." Crassus became so powerful that he financed the army that put down the slave revolt led by Spartacus. To celebrate Spartacus's crucifixion, Crassus hosted a banquet for the entire voting public of Rome (10,000 people) that lasted for several days. Each participant was also given an allowance of three months of grain. His ostentatious displays gave us the word crass.

Crassus made a fortune in real estate by controlling Rome's only fire department acquiring the land from property owners victimized by fire.. When a fire broke out, a horse drawn water tank was dispatched to the site, but before fire was put out, Crassus or one of his representatives haggled over the price of his services, often while the house was burning down before their eyes. To save the building Crassus often required the owner to fork over title to the property and then pay rent.

Does this sound like anyone we know? "There is nothing new under the sun"

Crassus was most likely the largest property owner in Rome. He also purchased property with money obtained through underhanded methods. While serving as a lieutenant in the civil war of 88-82 he able to buy land formally held by the enemy at bargain prices, sometimes by murdering its owners. Crassius also opened a profitable training center for slaves. He purchased unskilled bondsmen, trained them and then sold them as slaves for a handsome profit.

Roman males aged 14 to 60 paid a poll tax. There were also property taxes, tariffs, special pig taxes and taxes for everything that was registered. There were crop registries, animal registries, craftsmen and tradesman registries. Even prostitutes had to register (a surviving one'day permit for a prostitute named Aphrodite allowed her "to go to bed with whoever you wish on this date")

Children were registered and "house-by-house registration," a sort of financial census, was established to keep tabs on everybody and make sure they paid their taxes. Births were registered and landlords were required to provide detailed information on the occupants of their dwelling that included parentage, age, profession, tax status and information on the property they owned.

Sound like politicians and current government we know?

Bottom line, Rome fell, nothing could stop it. What say you about the American Republic?

The importance of this really can not be overstated. If the Justice Department wins - it will mean that two memos from the Obama Administration can be used to redefine law, and force federal redefinition on the states.

If you think this is about gays or something, you're not paying attention.

I can't remember who it was, but someone in my circles extolled the virtues of solar power, and that we had the tech to let people work 8 hour work weeks with this tech...

Not so Green Solar Plant....
....data from the California Energy Commission show the plant burned much more natural gas than expected, as the electric power generated by the plant has 40 percent below expectations. As a result, Ivanpah burned enough natural gas in its first year of operation in 2014 to emit more than 46,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide -- nearly twice the threshold for power plants or factories in California to be required to participate in the state’s carbon dioxide cap-and-trade program.___I can't remember who it was, but someone in my circles extolled the virtues of solar power, and that we had the tech to let people work 8 hour work weeks with this tech...

“It was a great, great shock … We’ve all been sitting on pins and needles and praying very hard,” Brown said, adding that Mintz was “an extremely good guy.”
Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, was identified as the maniac who killed nine people and injured seven others Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg after demanding to know their religions.
He was shot dead by Douglas County sheriff’s deputies, Sheriff John Hanlin said.
Mintz’s cousin, Derek Bourgeois, told The Daily Mail that Mintz charged at the shooter.
“There was no way he was going to stand around and watch something this horrific happen,” Bourgeois said, adding that Mintz is expected to recover.
Bourgeois told the paper that he and Mintz had joined the Army together after high school.
Bourgeois was stationed in Fort Bragg, NC, and Mintz was sent to Fort Lewis in Washington.
Mintz’s aunt Wanda Mintz told Fox 8 that he could have easily died.
“I really think that if he wasn’t such a strong, young guy, he may have died,” she said.
His family said Mintz was in Oregon mainly to raise his son.
“My brother talked to Chris on the phone while Chris was walking into school to tell him to remind his grandson that Grandpa said, ‘Happy birthday,’” said Wanda Mintz.
His family remains optimistic about his chances for a full recovery.
“His vital signs are OK. He’s going to have to learn to walk again, but he walked away with his life and that’s more than so many other people did,” his cousin Ariana Earnhardt told Fox 8.___This is a hero. This is news to be shared. Not background of who, why what, on the killer.

This is a common sense discussion.

Obama is routinely clueless

Edit: I'm as guilty of a knee-jerk reaction as Obama is, spouting off before I have all the facts. The UCC campus where the shooting took place was not a gun-free zone (http://goo.gl/c2CM5H). However, I still stand by the logic I originally presented. The fact that this shooting did not happen in a gun-free zone does not alter the fact that such incidents routinely do.

The thing that infuriated me almost as much as the timing of Obama's remarks today was his shtick about how this is becoming routine. The reporting, his responses, the conversation in the aftermath. But he once again demonstrates that he DOES. NOT. GET. IT.

Mr. Obama, you neglect to address what else is routine about these shootings. They routinely happen in so-called gun free zones. The shooter is routinely taken down, either by police responding to the scene, or by his own hand when faced with the police. And multiple lives are routinely lost in the time that it takes for that armed response to show up. And liberals routinely cry for tighter restrictions on gun laws.

Now I'm going to be completely shocking and agree with Obama on a couple of things. Even as a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, I don't think that that more guns is the answer. And I do think that there need to be "common sense" changes to the gun laws in this country. And before you jump on me, let me elaborate.

I think that there are plenty of guns in this country. Those who want to own them do, often in multiples, and those who don't want anything to do with guns don't. That's simple. More guns just means that those that want them will have more, and those that don't want anything to do with them will continue to have none. What we need is to change the laws that restrict law abiding citizens who have taken the necessary and legal steps to legally carry a firearm from exercising that right. We don't need more guns, we just need to let people defend themselves with the guns they already have, if they so choose.

Gun free zones do nothing but attract the psychopaths. If this were untrue, these mass shootings would occur in a variety of places. But we routinely hear about another mass shooting. And it's always at a school or college, or at a church, or at a military base (which is beyond absurd). These mass shootings aren't someone just snapping and whipping out their concealed weapon in the heat of the moment. These are premeditated attacks, deliberately designed to create as much shock and horror as possible. If a gunman goes into an area with tight security, he knows his time will be short. If he goes to a place where an unknown number of people are potentially armed, he knows his time might be short. But if he attacks a school where he knows that he will be met with no resistance for twenty or thirty minutes, he knows he will be famous.

We do need to change the laws, but in a direction that will allow people to have a fighting chance if and when they end up in a classroom with a madman, rather than forcing them to be victims until the cops show up. We do need to address mental health in this country, but that takes time, and until someone is able to fix that problem, there will be more mass shootings, and they will happen in gun-free zones.

Because that's the routine.___This is a common sense discussion.

The statists, more laws are always the answer....

Some facts.

The US state is above average in terms of gun regulation, according to Laura Cutilletta, a senior attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a leading advocacy group in California.

Local elected officials this year made universal background checks mandatory before the sale of any firearm in Oregon, one of 18 out of 50 states to do so. Elsewhere in the United States, sales at gun shows or on the Internet are not subject to such controls, a known loophole.

Still, Oregon does not prohibit the transfer or possession of assault weapons, nor does it have a gun-purchase waiting period.___The statists, more laws are always the answer....

They really have been had. If you believe the increase was to help, I'm afraid you've been lied to.

Hey Santa Monica - you've been had!
LA County Federation of Labor got a $15 minimum wage law passed, and now they're getting an exemption for themselves. This means that only labor shops will be able to negotiate lower pay for workers who are not worth $15.

It's all about increasing union membership and increasing money for union bosses.

It's not about the little people.
It's not about providing good products and services for residents.

Oh, and you might want to look into how much the union is donating to the campaigns of the council members who support this. And how many of their family members are getting union money.___They really have been had. If you believe the increase was to help, I'm afraid you've been lied to.

There is No Right Not to Be Offended

Kudos to the Wesleyan administration, in particular President Michael Roth, for the statement following the uproar after the linked op-ed piece appeared in the Argus:

"Debates can raise intense emotions, but that doesn't mean that we should demand ideological conformity because people are made uncomfortable," Wesleyan University President Michael Roth wrote in a blog post along with Provost Joyce Jacobsen and Vice-President for Equity and Inclusion, Antonio Farias.

"As members of a university community, we always have the right to respond with our own opinions, but there is no right not to be offended."___Good intro preceeding the article.

Don't be sucked in. In this article, notice the Alinsky-esque tactics they use. Be aware of your surroundings, be it in real life, or in social media. Listen carefully to what they are saying, or asking. Remember, the better you are at communicating, the harder it is for others to refute your ideology. Better yet, find common ground. In doing so it's hard for them to attack something they believe. What are your ideas?

Shift the burden of proof on them. Don't play their game. Make them play yours. For example: If they're trying to get you to prove why minimum wage would be a good idea, you've already lost. They already know your arguments we've done it before and we were fine, it'll lift so and so arbitrary CBO number out of poverty, etc. and they've come packed with their data to refute yours. NO.Instead, get them to prove

While this is an older article, I think it is important in its message, that we need to be armed with knowledge of what we support of conservative values.

+Leslie P posted earlier an outstanding point about what our mission here should be. Lord knows I've fumbled that many times. Sometimes whispering the message forces the other side to listen . By asking questions of others, and listening and being armed with not just knowledge, but the heart of what we believe, we might actually accomplish something.

What does this say about us as a allegedly civilized species?

The larger problem is that people are talking past each other. Fiorina’s remarks — and these videos — are really aimed at the abortion industry and its Achilles’ heel, late-term abortions. None of these videos would strike a chord if the only images were of blastocysts.

Most Americans are morally appalled by late-term abortions. Planned Parenthood and its allies know this, which is why they refer to “uterine contents,” “clumps of cells,” “tissue” and even “goop,” when a more apt descriptor would be “fetus” or even “baby.”

In other words, the people horrified by these videos aren’t out of the mainstream — they are the mainstream. The people trying to dismiss the videos are the extremists, and the media give them cover.___What does this say about us as a allegedly civilized species?

Interesting write up on president Adams and his dealings with Jihadists. Remember, the US Marines' stanza about the Battle of Tripoli.

.... that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust, by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE

Now, it is true that 1) we do not govern by pure majority rule in the US, and 2) Madison did make a distinction, in more than one place, between “democracy” and “a republic.” The problem is, that there appears to be an incomplete understanding of that situation. How do we tie that in with a solution to the "Republic scourge"?

Liberals and conservatives will continue to disagree about the sources and solutions for much of our inequality problem. We will fight over the role of unionization and minimum wages, the necessary scope of redistribution, and the funding and structure of public education. It is unlikely, however, that a political system polarized on precisely these issues will do much on any of these sources of inequality, at least until the voters give one of our political parties a definitive mandate to act.

Pruning rents to the wealthy provides a necessary libertarian prong to a larger agenda of reducing inequality, one with some chance of getting traction even in polarized times. Conservatives should embrace this agenda because it allows them to respond to the public's anger about crony capitalism in a market-friendly way. Liberals should support it because it gives them an opportunity to make a real dent in inequality even though they do not control all the branches of government.

The challenge of our time is to find what Madison called a "Republican remedy for the diseases most incident to Republican government." While the state is sometimes the friend of those working to produce a more egalitarian society, it is just as often the tool of those who would entrench inequality. Stopping that upward redistribution is the challenge of our times, one that can be met even while we are gridlocked on so much else.

It is just an opinion of mine, but I would bet a sum that the scientists that were involved for the false data on the website are also Humanity-responsible climate changers..

Flynn said the EPA's warning about the pollution came belatedly, and it was followed by incomplete testing data presented in a way that minimized the presence of contaminants above drinking-water standards. He called it a "PR stunt" by the EPA.

"It was so insulting that I just can't imagine a scientist would be involved in its development," he said of data given to the state.

What I want to know is how do supporters of this administration or of the Iran "Treaty" deal accept it on the merits? How do you say this is a good deal when we have American prisoners still there that were not part and parcel of the negotiations?

Interesting Forbes article. If more of propagandists would actually read, they may become slackjawed.

Through these activities and more like them, Heartland has become the international headquarters of the scientific alternative to the UN’s IPCC, now providing full scale rebuttals to the UN’s own massive reports. Any speaker, any authority, any journalist or bureaucrat asserting the catastrophic danger of supposed man-caused global warming needs to be asked for their response to Climate Change Reconsidered. If they have none, then they are not qualified to address the subject.
