Do We Even Have Free Will?

"For any materialist vision of consciousness, the crucial stumbling block is the question of free will. A modern, enlightened person tends to feel that he or she has rejected a mystical, immaterial conception of the eternal soul in exchange for a strictly scientific understanding of consciousness and selfhood—as something created by the billions of neurons in our brains with their trillions of synapses and complex chemical and electrical processes. But the fact of our being entirely material, hence subject to the laws of cause and effect, introduces the concern that our lives might be altogether determined. Is it possible that our experience of decision-making—the impression we have of making choices, indeed of having choices to make, sometimes hard ones—is entirely illusory? Is it possible that a chain of physical events in our bodies and brains must causeus to... more »

Worth sharing.

H/t to +Annie Oakley

This is Noor Inayat Khan. She was a British spy during WWII who was captured by the Nazi's and executed at the Dachau concentration camp.

Her story starts in 1914 when she was born in St. Petersburg, Russia to an Indian Muslim father and an American mother. In her home, she was raised with the values of being a pacifist and being tolerant of all people.

Noor became a writer and poet in her 20s. But then WWII broke out. And she wanted to help and particularly help bridge the gap between Indian people and the British.

She said, "I wish some Indians would win high military distinction in this war. If one or two could do something in the Allied service which was very brave and which everybody admired it would help to make a bridge between the English people and the Indians."

So she became a spy for the British in France, where she was the only wireless operator. All the others had been captured. But still she stayed.

After 5 months she too was captured. In captivity, she told her captors lies. Then she escaped. After being betrayed, she was captured once more.

She was brought to Dachau. Where for a day she was beaten. Still, she didn't tell the Nazi's anything.

Her last word when the German firing squad raised their weapons was, "Liberte".

Math and Economics are darn hard.

Seriously... If you raise the price for labor, what happens to the prices of A, B or C?

A=Rent goes up.
B=Groceries go up
C=Restaurants costs go up

H/T to +Delbert Warner

As predicted years ago when the min wage hike law passed in Seattle. Simple free-market economics. #Winning

"A University of Washington team studying the law's effects found that the law has boosted pay in low-wage jobs since it took effect in 2015, but that it also caused a 9 percent reduction in hours worked, The Seattle Times reported. For an average low-wage Seattle worker, that's a loss of about $125 per month, the study said. There would be about 5,000 more low-wage jobs in the city without the law, the study estimated."

This is something to think about. What's on your head when depressed?

H/t to +Leslie P

I have thought about this a lot today, and I think it's time to say something.

If you're a potential employer, please understand that this was a ridiculous number of years ago, and by no means is related to my current mental health state, or even any state that I would consider today. But, things need to be said.

Some 30 years ago, probably this month, I put a gun in my mouth, and it went click

I am alive, and have no interest, even in my wildest dreams, of repeating that event, but it happened.

Even having friends at the time (including the one that owned the firearm) I was alone. I can go into a lot of details, but at the time I had a bit of predilection to that sort of thing, And at the same time a relationship ended that truly rocked my entire being to the core. That last bit, I'm not sure I'm ready to talk about even now, but it was there.

But yeah, there was that one day. I had been entertaining a number of possibilities, including driving off some choice bits of road that had a ~1000ft drop where if I didn't start a fire I wouldn't be found for months, if not years. But here was an opportunity. Simple, quick, and at the time that part of me didn't actually give a fuck about my friendd, his family any more than my own.

But the gun went click.

I can tell you what was in my head. I still remember it these 30 years later.
I can tell you what gunmetal tastes like. It's blue. Steel and care and probably bat shit.
I can tell you what click feels like. That moment you've made that ultimate decision, and the universe just says "fuck you, you have to deal with it"
I can tell you about the embarrassment. That moment when you realize that you almost scattered your brains across the bedroom of one of the few people that cared. (to this day, they don't know)
I can tell you about that time the gun goes click and you realize what a selfish asshole you are, and realize that you have to be just like everyone else, and take the goods and the bads, and hold on to the things that make life meaningful.

And I can tell you about that click and if you're thinking about that, I can still smell the fear, and taste the gunmetal, and what it means to go past that,and deny those things to be the best human you can.

But, please PM me before you risk that click. I was lucky, but you might miss the awesomeness that the 30 years passed that.

This is how I was created

This state of superfluidity is sometimes referred to as the fifth state of matter, or a Bose-Einstein condensate. Particles in this state behave like a single macroscopic wave, oscillating at the same frequency, and paradoxically combining the attributes of liquids, solids, and gases.

How it can be used If engineers can find a way to harness superfluidity at room temperature, it could lead to new and improved photonic devices like lasers, LEDs, solar panels, and photovoltaic cells.___This is how I was created

I enjoy reading Imprimis; I learn so much from these conservative educators.

Earlier was a post about class warfare in economics. Thus is a good read.

America was an exception to Marx’s theory of social progress. By that theory, societies were supposed to move from feudalism to capitalism to communism. But the America of the 1850s, the most capitalist society around, was not turning communist. Marx had an explanation for that. “True enough, the classes already exist,” he wrote of the United States, but they “are in constant flux and reflux, constantly changing their elements and yielding them up to one another.” In other words, when you have economic and social mobility, you don’t go communist.

This is insane. A state going bankrupt.

Comptroller Susana Mendoza must prioritize what gets paid as Illinois nears its third year without a state budget.

A mix of state law, court orders and pressure from credit rating agencies requires some items be paid first. Those include debt and pension payments, state worker paychecks and some school funding.

--The sign does not name Islam or Mohammed.

--The sign owner offers to take down the sign if its detractors can prove the bulletin points are erroneous.

My point being, it's an obvious action by the Social-Marxists to harass and hide facts of their own making.

I don't agree with some of the hyperbole, and language, it's the take away:

--The sign owner researched in the Koran and Hadith to factually back up the bulletin points.

--The sign does not name Islam or Mohammed.

--The sign owner offers to take down the sign if its detractors can prove the bulletin points are erroneous.

My point being, it's an obvious action by the Social-Marxists to harass and hide facts of their own making. ___
