Landscape Photography Show13,603*LPS Event #100: Straight to My Heart* *NOTE: This will be the FIRST event using the new G+ user interface. Your patience is appreciated and please report any problems or glitches.* *THEME: Straight Lines* One of the most powerful tools in photography composition is the straight line. Share a photo with a crooked horizon line and everyone cringes!! Share a photo with a strong leading line to the subject of the photo and you get rave reviews. Straight lines both horizontal and vertical are VERY powerful. They represent strength and boldness. Curved lines are more soothing and tranquil. Straight lines that intersect can show chaos. Several parallel straight lines represent power and order. *For this event, we want to see your use of straight lines. In the comments tell us about the straight lines that are used and why you used them. Be sure to include the location.* *Some links that may be of help:* http://digital-photography-school.com/how-to-use-leading-lines-for-better-compositions/ https://photographylife.com/straightening-the-horizon-and-aligning-lines http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/tip/2759/visual-design-using-line-in-photography/ *Special Rules:* 1. Share your landscape photograph that displays the theme. 2. In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located? What were you trying to achieve? What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them? We want to know the details about your photograph. THE COMMENT IS REQUIRED. You will have 1 hour after posting your entry to include an appropriate comment. Those entries without an appropriate comment one hour after posting WILL BE REMOVED. 3. Other participants will be discussing on your post and asking you questions. Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4. This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION. Please don't post a photo and leave. The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo. Within the event, select your photo and view it large. Look for the "photo details" on the right. It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc. Photos that don't have complete EXIF data in Photo Details will be removed. Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed. If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849  page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, February 20, 2017, 10 am CST. Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510  page. Circle the curators and engage them in conversation. Landscape Photography Show13,603*LPS Event #50: The Perfect Horizon* This event will focus on a landscape photograph with "The Perfect Horizon".  It will also review our lessons from the Horizontal Rule of Thirds.  What makes a perfect horizon? 1) *Level* - The horizon MUST be level to the eye especially if it's water.  Landscapes with mountains and jagged horizons seem natural to our eye and we don't worry about it being level.  If the landscape is all land and there is a gentle slope to the horizon, then you are really challenged as to how do you make the viewer's eye sense that you got it right.  The easiest way to to incorporate a vertical element such as a tree along one of the vertical rules of third lines.  We know the tree is straight so the viewer's eye will think that you got it right. It's always great to get the horizon level in the camera but if you didn't, most post processing software has the ability to straighten the horizon for you.  Make use of these wonderful tools. 2) Place the horizon on the upper or lower horizontal rule of thirds lines.  This means that you have 1/3 sky and 2/3 land or 2/3 sky and 1/3 land. This tends to give us a more interesting photograph.  A horizon split right down the middle is often boring. 3) Know when to break the rules.  For example, a landscape with awesome reflections might look great if split down the middle. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have used "The Perfect Horizon". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. Landscape Photography Show13,603*Landscape Photography Show #47: Fill the Frame* "Fill the Frame" is often the first advice given to a beginning photographer.  That's what we will focus on in this event.  For landscape photographs, that can be done in one of two ways.  1. Do it with through the viewfinder.  Move yourself to the proper location and angle or zoom in/out if your camera does this until you get a pleasing image that "fills the frame".  You don't want any extra space or elements that will distract from your composition.   2. Crop your photo to eliminate that meaningless extra space that doesn't contribute to your composition and eliminate distracting elements. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have "Filled the Frame". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. Landscape Photography Show13,603*Landscape Photography Show #46: Power Points* In the last two events, we explored the horizontal and vertical rule of thirds lines and how they divide your frame into 9 equal parts.  It's always great to set a horizon on the lower or upper horizontal line.  It's also good to place a strong element along one of the vertical rule of thirds lines. This event will focus on where the two vertical and horizontal rule of thirds lines intersect.  We call those Power Points.  There are 4 of them: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. Placing a strong element at one of the Power Points can really improve the composition, drama, and power of your photograph.  Examples:  the single red leaf on a green tree; the eye of anything wildlife, and the setting sun on the horizon.    Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Power Points are what we want practice with this event.  Show us something special place at one of the intersection points of those vertical and horizontal lines.   1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays something special at one of the Power Points.       2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us which Power Point you used: upper left, upper right, lower left, or lower right.  Explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Power Point rules, tell us why.  Also give us some information about the location and any challenges that you faced.  We want to know the details about your photograph. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    General Rules: 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 13, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) CuratLPS Event #46: Power Points2015-07-06 17:00:00344

Landscape Photography Show13,603*Landscape Photography Show #44: Horizon - Rules-of-Thirds* Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Imagine two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divides the space into three equal spaces.  Also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later and also the vertical lines.  This event will focus on those horizontal lines. Study your landscape BEFORE you shoot.  In the viewfinder, place the horizon on one of those horizontal rule-of-thirds lines.  You will have 1/3 sky and 2/3 ground or 2/3 sky and 1/3 ground.  That composition is very pleasing to the viewer.  Having your horizon dead center is often boring and not interesting.   Horizons should be level!!  If you have sky and water, then having the horizon level is a MUST!!   If you have sky and ground, the "level" becomes more complicated.  If your horizon is very curvy with rolling hills for example, you won't have a level horizon and that's OK.  Your mind's eye knows that hills aren't level.  If your horizon is the boundary between sky and land and only a slight hill, you're mind's eye won't find it appealing when looking at the photograph of that view because the horizon isn't level.   You can trick your mind's eye by adding a vertical element to the composition that the viewer will "know" is vertical such as a tree.  You might put that vertical tree on one of those vertical rule-of-thirds lines.  Your mind knows that the tree is vertical and won't mind an unlevel horizon. Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.  You might try getting added drama with 10-20% sky and 80-90% ground or vice versa.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a horizon using the horizontal rule-of-thirds.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the horizontal rule-of-thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.  Feel free to leave comments and discuss on the main event as well. *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) *You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don'tLPS Event #44: Horizon - Rule of Thirds2015-06-08 17:00:00568

The blue boat shed
This is probably the most photographed place in Perth, WE, Australia. Even at 5am, there were already several people crowding the narrow boardwalk to get the best angle for sunrise...

The magnificent mosaic ceiling of Battistero di San Giovanni, Florence
This amazing work is a mosaic depicting Christ and the Angels of Judgement at each side. Particulary impressive are the scenes of punishment of the damned, on Christ's left side.
It is pretty hard to capture, as tripods are not allowed, and the crowds.
I managed to rest my camera on the floor without anyone walking by...

The red torii gates at Fushimi Inari-taisha temple, Kyoto*
This is the classical image of this well known zen buddhist temple in Kyoto. The difficult thing is to get it without people... it is so crowded that this stretch has separate tunnels for each direction (see the other direction https://goo.gl/cl1UkN). I had to wait for a long time, with worsening lighting conditions, until I managed to get a break in the traffic...

Editing older posts
Since the new interface change became mandatory, I'm having difficulties editing older posts. Each time I try to save the edited text, I get "Save failed. Please try again". I've tried many times, with different browsers, anonymous mode, etc..., and they all give me the same message.
Does anyone know what's going on?

The Sand Zen Garden at Gikaku-ji, Kyoto
This temple is also know as the Silver Pavilion, since it's structure sought to emulate the Golden Pavillion (Kinkaku-ji). But it was never covered with silver foil, although it had a silvery looking lacquer finish in earlier times.
The garden is said to have been designed by the architect Sōami, with a pile symbolizing Mt. Fuji.
It took me a while to get the image without people crowding in, as the entrance to the grounds is right to the left where the white wall is.
