It's up to us.
Bernie didn't go away. He's still there, working every day for the very ideas and ideals which inspired us and so many others in the recent primary campaign. Yes, we hear less about him (as if there was a lot during the primaries ... another subject) than we did, but he said all along, "It's not about me. It's about all of you" and that "no president can do it alone." David Horsey's nailed it in this cartoon, but what happens next is up to us. Bernie is laying the groundwork for those next steps with #OurRevolution (troubled beginning and all), is galvanizing opposition to the TPP, and support for candidates like Tim Canova, Zephyr Teachout, and Pramila Jayapal. We can be sad that things turned out as they did in the primary. But that doesn't mean the goals are any different, even if the means to getting there may change and... more »

Bernie Sanders Goes On The Warpath As Trump Nominee Signals Cuts To Social Security
Sen. Sanders: “Donald Trump asked workers and seniors to vote for him because he was the only Republican candidate who would not cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid – programs that are of life-and-death importance for millions of Americans. Now, he has nominated a person for secretary of Health and Human Services, Rep. Tom Price, who has a long history of wanting to do exactly the opposite of what Trump campaigned on. Rep. Price has a long history of wanting to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. What hypocrisy! Mr. Trump needs to tell the American people that what he said during the campaign were just lies, or else appoint an HHS secretary who will protect these programs and do what Trump said he would do.”

Housing inequality is a failure to govern, and the market is not the answer
The fight against inequality is a fight against lies. The truth is that people are structurally locked out of jobs and income adequacy (even when they have jobs) and then condemned for being excluded, as if it were a perverse and immoral choice.

"I’m a Mexican-American from a small town. Here’s why poor white people voted for Trump"

Author John Paul Brammer has the most brilliant breakdown yet of why poor white people made the difference in getting Donald Trump elected.

Brammer opened up the 24-tweet essay by first identifying as a Mexican-American from a small town in deep-red Oklahoma, establishing his credentials for knowing the rationale behind why working-class white voters went for Trump in droves. He then laid out, tweet-by-tweet, why American culture’s glorification of wealth is idolization of wealthy people is what made the crucial difference in poor people voting for a billionaire president.

Chuck Schumer: The Worst Possible Democratic Leader at the Worst Possible Time

WHEN BARACK OBAMA leaves the White House, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer will almost certainly be elected Senate minority leader — and therefore become the highest ranking Democratic official in America.

That’s a terrible roll of the dice for Democrats, because Schumer might as well have been grown in a lab to be exactly the wrong face for opposition to Donald Trump:

Schumer, who’s just about to turn 66, grew up in Brooklyn and went to the same high school as Bernie Sanders. Then their lives diverged: Schumer, the smartiest of the smartypants, got a perfect score on the SATs and then went to Harvard and Harvard Law School. He was elected to the New York State Assembly at 23, the U.S. Congress at 29, and the U.S. Senate at 47. He’s never had any adult job outside elected office.

Chuck Schumer: The Worst Possible Democratic Leader at the Worst Possible Time

He possesses the same impressive political acumen as Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, sagely explaining “For every blue-collar Democrat we lose in western Pennsylvania, we will pick up two moderate Republicans in the suburbs in Philadelphia, and you can repeat that in Ohio and Illinois and Wisconsin.”

Schumer’s done more than anyone except Bill and Hillary Clinton to intertwine Wall Street and the Democratic Party. He raises millions and millions of dollars from the finance industry, both for himself and for other Democrats. In return, he voted to repeal the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999 and voted to bail out Wall Street in 2008. In between, he slashed fees paid by banks to the Securities and Exchange Commission to pay for regulatory enforcement, and eviscerated congressional efforts to crack down on rating agencies.
Schumer has long been the Democrats’ point man in efforts to craft a bipartisan deal to slash taxes on multinational corporations.

Schumer voted for the Patriot Act in 2001, and sponsored its predecessor, the Omnibus Counterterrorism Act of 1995. During a Senate hearing, Schumer explained that “it’s easy to sit back in the armchair and say that torture can never be used. But when you’re in the foxhole, it’s a very different deal.” In certain cases, he said, “most senators” would say “do what you have to do.” Schumer also defended the New York Police Department’s surveillance of Muslims across the region, which Trump has cited as a national model.
In October 2002, Schumer voted for the Iraq War by giving George W. Bush authority to invade. In a speech explaining his vote, Schumer warned of Iraq’s imaginary yet “vigorous pursuit of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons.”
Schumer voted against Barack Obama’s deal to limit Iran’s ability to enrich uranium and potentially develop a nuclear weapons program.

Perhaps worst of all, Schumer gave Anthony Weiner his start, first hiring him on his staff, then encouraging him to run for office and then endorsing Weiner in the race for Schumer’s seat when Schumer was running for the Senate in 1998. Thanks, Chuck.

Are there any positive things about Chuck Schumer? Well … he did vote against NAFTA in 1993, and while he’s supported other trade deals since, he made negative noises about the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Also, he’s a talented matchmaker with as many as 11 marriages to his credit. And he’s the second cousin once removed of Amy Schumer, which you might see as good or bad, depending.

(Note: I generally don't copy entire articles into a post, but made an exception with this one for this reason: it is critical for our country that the Democratic Party not make another huge mistake. “After running a campaign built on inciting divisions and hate, Donald Trump has claimed he wants to unite America. Yet he has done nothing meaningful to stop the wave of hate crimes and hate speech he has unleashed, and now has brought that strategy right into the Oval Office.

“Donald Trump needs to forcefully denounce the hateful actions and efforts to intimidate people that some of his supporters are undertaking and rescind the appointment of Steve Bannon.”

So there we have it: President Trump (excuse me for a second while I run to the toilet and vomit).

I don't see anybody talking about this, but I think Hillary trashing many of Trump's followers as a "basket of deplorables", was the moment she lost the election. It was her "47%" moment. A giant section of hard-working Americans who have given up on establishment politicians, took this as a personal slap in the face.

Once the DNC had engineered Bernie's defeat, there was nobody else except Trump talking to this huge swath of disaffected Americans. They were so desperate to have someone who listens to them, that they ended up voting for the con artist. At least he pretended to be listening to them.

The video below sums it up.

Shouldn't we demand our president to be a peacemaker?
John Kiriakou: "The quest for peace must be a part of our presidential election. Instead of arguing which candidate would be more likely to use drones, more likely to bomb our enemies, real or perceived, or more likely to use the stick, rather than the carrot, we must demand that those candidates commit themselves to the pursuit of peace both here and abroad.

"Without peace, we will continue down the long road toward anarchy and hatred," he added.

Though it may not have seemed possible, climate catastrophe is even closer than previously thought, with new figures released Thursday finding that—when the wells already drilled, pits dug, and pipelines built, are taken under consideration—we are well on our way to going beyond 2°C of warming.

"If you're in a hole, stop digging," begins the study, put forth by the fossil fuel watchdog Oil Change International (OCI), in partnership with 14 other environmental organizations. (full story below)

Meanwhile, with attention focused on Dakota Access Pipeline, Obama quietly approves two new pipelines:

Myrna De los Santos, a mega-volunteer for Bernie Sanders, struggled with health issues for years – but she could not afford the health care she needed on McDonald’s pay. Last week, she passed away. She was 49 years old.
We must not stop fighting until all workers have a living wage, justice on the job, and access to health care.

Now we're talking!
..and if Trump wins, and Mexico reclaims Texas and California, Mexico should build a wall along the new border to keep Americans out. Of course, those Americans who want to stay and work for slave wages will be welcome....but no health care or any benefits for them! 😉

What more needs to be said. Where are the people who think they are our leaders on this subject? It is ridiculous for anyone to think we believe that they are unaware. ___#EnvironmentalJustice #NativeJustice #CharacterMatters

Happy Birthday Bernie!
Thanks for waking America up, and showing us that a country that respects and provides opportunities for its people is possible. The fire is lit, and will continue to Bern brightly for generations.

How the U.S. Government Is Helping Corporations Plunder Native Land
A 6-month investigation reveals that the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs—tasked with negotiating the best possible deal for Native landowners—often makes it cheap and easy for outside corporations to exploit Native resources. As a result, corporations are able to drill, frack, farm and fell timber on Native lands, paying landowners little in return. Companies like Koch Industries and Walmart, however, reap huge profits.

It's time to start phasing out oil pipelines, not building new ones that endanger the water supply of some of our nation's most vulnerable people.

Stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline which endangers the water supply to Native American reservations. | We the People: Your Voice in Our Government

"The Dakota Access pipeline is set to be constructed near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, crossing under the Missouri River which is the only source of water to the reservation. The pipeline is planned to transport approximately 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The potential of oil leaks would contaminate the only source of water for the reservation. While Dakota Access claims oil leaks are unlikely, an oil leak from a separate pipeline in North Dakota was discovered (8/15/16) to have leaked over 500 barrels of oil since the leak began on July 19, 2016. You can read the article here: http://bit.ly/2aVm5cv. A leak like this from the Dakota Access pipeline would leave the Standing Rock Sioux without any clean water."

This is happening now, not 100 years into the future.
Please use climate change as a litmus test when choosing whom to vote for in all political offices this year: from your local city council, all the way up to President. If you don't know where the candidates stand, find out.

This is our only planet. Current and future generations will be counting on us to make the right decisions.

But that doesn't mean the goals are any different, even if the means to getting there may change and... more »

Jill Stein should be part of a four-way Presidential Debate

The Commission on Presidential Debates strives, in it's stated mission, ‘to ensure that debates, as a permanent part of every general election, provide the best possible information to viewers and listeners.’

By setting a qualification bar for participation in the presidential debates much, much higher than the primary debates, they are clearly sabotaging their own mission. The standards should err on the side of more debate, not less.
