Derek Ross1,325,753*The original Android Hangout Show returns!* Hi. I was the first guy on Google+ to start doing live Hangout Shows for Android news and discussion way back during the Hangouts on Air beta days. My team and I ran a successful Android related Hangout show for for 74 weeks in a row before our hiatus. Our show was watched and listed to by thousands every week via Google+, YouTube, and various Podcast platforms. *The band is getting back together...* ...or at least the lead singer. I've come to realize that the shows offered today just don't cut it. They're not professional. They're boring. They don't offer any value such as show guests or giveaways. They're just not what my team used to provide and it angers me. I'm going to try my best to change that for you guys. I'm tentatively going to relaunch our Android on Air show next month. The time and date are subject to change pending renovations to my office. If everything can be completed by then, I'll be back in business providing you with quality HoA Android goodness. The original Android Hangout Show returns!2014-06-06 03:00:0099

I love Philips Hue... but I need more bulbs!

I fell into Amazon's Prime Day trap with my Philips Hue starter kit. 3 bulbs are nice, but I need more. I want to do more. I want them in a lot of rooms. I'm going to buy the cheaper Hue White bulbs next.

Enough fanboying for a second. Smart bulbs are great, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having them if you or someone else in your house uses the light switches to them off. No power = no smart. Oh well. I guess it's time to retrain our brains.

Facebook Messenger now has 1 billion users, and I've still never used it

Having more than 1 billion active users a month is one hell of a feat. I'm not a fan of Facebook, but clearly there's plenty of folks out there that are. So, congrats Facebook. It looks like your billion with Messenger and billion with WhatsApp are winning the mobile messaging war thus far.

It's too bad Google had a product killer product 3 years ago, Hangouts, that they failed to innovate upon as time passed, letting other products leave them in the dust.

I'm still hopeful for Allo and Duo, though, I find it hard to believe that they'll see this type of mass adoption.

Verizon adds "always-on data" (throttling) and tethering to prepaid plans

For a cool $60 a month you can join Verizon's pre-paid wireless service. The fact that their plans now include tethering, unlimited data, and talk/text to Canada and Mexico, makes these plans very enticing, especially since they're backed by the best and largest LTE network in the country.

On a related note, I just moved back to Verizon Wireless after being away from their services for over 2.5 years. I was on Straight Talk. I didn't mind using a sub-par network while saving money. Well, these new plans and pricing, they brought me back. I don't mind spending a few bucks more to be on the best network around.

Softbank buys mobile chip designer ARM for $32 billion!

WOW. $32 billion. That's just insane. ARM designs the processors used in virtually every mobile device, including most models from Apple, Samsung, HTC, LG...basically everyone. While it doesn't build them itself, it licenses the tech to Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung and others. Seeing as nearly everything in the mobile and IoT world uses ARM, this is a huge deal and we're going to need a lot of time to figure out what the implications of this could be.

Hangouts get shareable link to invite people to group chats

The Hangouts team has added a new “Join by link” option which allows users to generate a unique link for a specific group chat and send it out to as many people they see fit. Sounds easy.

Also, I still hate Hangouts. It was fine for 2 days. Now its back to being it's laggy self, taking minutes to send messages.

Attention local business owners: Here's how you can take advantage of the Pokemon Go phenomenon and bring customers to your restaurant, bar, retail store, shop, etc.

As you probably know, the entire world is obsessed with Pokemon Go right now. In fact, on Monday I walked around and played for about 45 minutes in Huntingdon with my family. I counted over 30 people playing. There were other families just like mine with moms, dads, children of all ages, all walking around playing together. I also saw groups of 2 or more, couples, and then large groups of 5+ people, all walking around because of this game. For an extremely small town like Huntingdon, this is amazing.

Pokemon Go now has more active daily users than Twitter. If that doesn't impress you, how about making over $14 million in less than a week. Now that's insane!

Pokemon Go now has more active daily users than Twitter. If that doesn't impress you, how about making over $14 million in less than a week. Now that's insane!

So, how can a business capitalize on this?

EASY!

Pokestops. A Pokestop is a place where people go to get Pokemon items that are needed to play the game. There are dozens of Pokestops around your town or city. Pokestops also have the ability to have a special addon installed on them, called a module. One of the modules actually attracts Pokemon. It's called a Lure Module. And because it attracts Pokemon, that means it also indirectly attracts people, aka, potential customers.

Pokemon Go players pick up lures normally as items during gameplay and when leveling up, but buying Lure Modules is about as effective and immediate a source of hyperlocal advertising as a business could possibly ask for. They light up in game like a Christmas tree and everyone in the vicinity can see it. One Lure Module costs 100 Pokecoins and a pack of eight Lure Modules costs 680 Pokecoins. The coins themselves you can buy with real money and 100 of them costs only 99 cents. That's 99 cents for 30 minutes' worth of guaranteed customer traffic to your business.

I know of a handful of businesses around the country that are taking advantage of this information and using it to their benefit. There's two ways to do this. 1) Make a Pokemon event and advertise that you're going to be dropping Lures all night long. 2) Just do it anyways during normal business hours.

This type of advertising, mixing the virtual world with the real world is just the tip of the ice berg. Happy advertising while you try to catch them all!___

Trading and Sponsored Locations coming to Pokemon Go

I know nothing of Pokemon, never played, watched, anything about Pokemon until a few days ago. I really still know next to nothing about the Pokemon lore, but I loved Ingress, so I've dove right into this new fad and I love it.

My wife and I play, mostly with our 2 younger children, (well, I noticed my wife had caught up to me by 2 levels last night, so she clearly is playing without us, haha) and I can definitely see the need and benefit for these two upcoming game features.

You get a lot of junk Pokemon as you travel around and it would be nice if we could trade extras that we don't want for others that we do want to other players. I could see my wife and I swapping Pokemon to appease our kids and to of course fill out our collection.

As for sponsored locations, this is great. I'd love to see events centered around Pokemon Go such as bar tours or restaurants, driving real world traffic and revenue to participating establishments. No other game has effectively been able to do this yet, especially on this scale.___

I haven't used Spaces since the second day after it launched I believe... Hopefully this acquisition will give the app and service the edge it needs to make Spaces more enticing.

Jesus Christ. $33.33 for an Amazon Fire 7" tablet https://goo.gl/5ZblbL

Yes, I know they're cheap and their specs aren't anything to brag about. That said, if you need an inexpensive tablet for a someone, this is incredible.

Don't like Amazon's content system and want to get back to El Goog? Well, XDA has a CyanogenMod solution for you. http://goo.gl/qO7XP7

This upcoming Asus Chromebook for $299 doesn't seem bad at all. With the addition of Android apps on Chrome OS (and my old Dell Chromebook that won't get app support) this guy might be my next.

Google's new Nexus phones could be rocking Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821, which is 10% faster than the 820.

Such a minimal jump in model number most likely means the chip is focused a few minor adjustments here and there for performance, heat, battery consumption, etc.

And, Qualcomm mentioned that we should see devices with this chip come out the second half of this year... Well, my calendar says July, so that seems legit.

Hopefully we see these Nexuses #soon.

Facebook Messenger will get optional end-to-end encryption

Facebook Messenger will get the option to turn on end-to-end encryption for individual conversations, similar to what Google announced with Allo. I wonder if privacy advocates will bitch and complain about Facebook not turning it on for all messages and being on by default in the same manner as they chastised Google?

As for Messenger itself, I've still never used it and never plan on using it. C'mon Allo. I need you.

Avast to buy AVG for $1.3 billion

I've used both AVG and Avast many times, for many years, in the past. It's quite interesting to see these two consumer-grade anti-malware companies come together in this manner. It isn’t yet clear if Avast will fold AVG’s software offerings into its own brand or continue to sell them under the existing name.

Prepare your wallet: Google making two new Android Wear watches

According to AP, the Googs is working on two brand new Google-branded / Nexus-like smartwatches with a focus on Google Assistant. What a time to be alive.

The two watches will will reportedly differ in design, size, and hardware capabilities.

Although I'm perfectly happy with and love my Huawei Watch, this has me quite interested as the Googs had said they were going to focus on bringing special features to Nexus devices.

Walmart Pay is here, and I'm boycotting it.

Walmart Pay is here, and I don't want it. In fact, it pisses me off. I was at Walmart yesterday picking up supplies for a BBQ at Raystown Lake with +Jeremy Waite. I saw the notification that Walmart Pay was available on the terminal I was using.

The thing is, I do not want multiple payment apps on my phone. I want one. I want to use Android Pay. I don't carry about 5 wallets in my pocket and pull one out pending on the store that I'm in. I have 1 wallet with all of my cards. I don't want to go into Walmart and open up the Walmart Pay app. I don't want to go into Sheetz and open up the Sheetz Pay app. I don't wan to go into H&M and open up the H&M Pay app. (Examples of bad things to come.)

If stores want to have their own mobile payments app and offer discounts or other incentives to use theirs over the 'standard' of Android Pay, then that's fine with me. Otherwise, this is something that just annoys me to no end.___

HTC 'Marlin' Nexus specs leak, comes with bottom speakers. Ugh.

So, it's beginning to look like this 2016 Nexus line-up will be similar to what Apple does with their iPhone 6/s and 6/s Plus. They're phones with the same design language and roughly the same internals, where the only real difference is the screen size and resolution. Last year with the Nexus 5X and 6P, the two phones looked nothing alike and didn't share enough of the same internals, in my opinion. These upcoming HTC Nexus phones seem to do just that. Awesome.

Here's the specs:

Manufactured by HTC
Quad-core Qualcomm processor
5.5" QHD (2560x1440) AMOLED display
USB-C port
12MP rear camera, 8MP front
Rear-mounted fingerprint scanner
4GB RAM
3450mAh battery
Bottom-firing speakers
32/128GB of storage
Bluetooth 4.2
