Derek Ross1,335,829*The original Android Hangout Show returns!* Hi. I was the first guy on Google+ to start doing live Hangout Shows for Android news and discussion way back during the Hangouts on Air beta days. My team and I ran a successful Android related Hangout show for for 74 weeks in a row before our hiatus. Our show was watched and listed to by thousands every week via Google+, YouTube, and various Podcast platforms. *The band is getting back together...* ...or at least the lead singer. I've come to realize that the shows offered today just don't cut it. They're not professional. They're boring. They don't offer any value such as show guests or giveaways. They're just not what my team used to provide and it angers me. I'm going to try my best to change that for you guys. I'm tentatively going to relaunch our Android on Air show next month. The time and date are subject to change pending renovations to my office. If everything can be completed by then, I'll be back in business providing you with quality HoA Android goodness. The original Android Hangout Show returns!2014-06-06 03:00:0099

Google seems to be marketing their upcoming event and the Pixel like no other

In the past, Nexus phones received a random blog post or a private press invite, that's it. Google seems to be going all in with the Pixel this time around and that's just awesome.

They're advertising this event all over the place from TV advertisements to web ads to huge billboards. Here's a Pixel / October 4th event advertisement photo from New York City.

I'm excited.

End of an era: BlackBerry is done making smartphones...

But that doesn't mean we won't see BlackBerry devices launching in the future. BlackBerry will just no longer manufacturer them themselves and instead rely on hardware partners. This was the case for the latest BlackBerry smartphone, the DTEK50, which basically was an Alcatel device that was manufactured by TCL.

Google Pixel conspiracy alert: The back is a touchpad for use with Andromeda.

This is just a theory that I have...and it's purely speculation, nothing more.

What if the back glass or plastic is actually a touchpad that will be used for controlling the 'desktop' mode of Andromeda?

You connect the Pixel phone via Chromecast or USB-C to a TV or Monitor to enable desktop mode. You then use the front of the phone as a keyboard and the back of the phone as a touchpad for navigating your way around your new Andromeda powered 'desktop'.

Thoughts?

Have fun!

Andromeda: Evolving Android into the unknown?

The last few days have been filled with a lot of Andromeda leaks and teasers. +Alex Dobie has done a great job organizing all of them into once place, here.

I'd say that this is probably something that many Android enthusiasts have wanted for quite some time. We love Android and use it daily, we use a Chromebook for many other tasks, but from time to time we require a bit more power, something that needs Windows or Mac OS. The end result is a phone, a laptop, and a desktop, all with various ranges of capabilities, yet none of them all interacting well or being seamlessly integrated.

Could this be Google's attempt to bring about a new operating system, leveraging the popularity and success of Android, and bring about an OS that works together in a more seamless manner?

Who knows?

It's definitely starting to get interesting though, now that we're talking about a 'Pixel 3' laptop launching Q3 2017, which may bring all of the best features of Chrome to Android, in one way or another, and then some.

What a time to be alive.

Also, what the hell is Fuchsia, if Andromeda is based off of Android...

I guess we'll know more when Google wants us to know more.___

Why? Because reasons. Apparently the Googs plans on announcing this little WiFi equipped router for $129 on October 4th. Why do you want this over OnHub? Who knows?!

Conspiracy theory time: Google WiFi will build out public hotspots for Android users to use, similar to Xfinity WiFi.

Over 500 Million Yahoo! accounts were compromised in 2014

"The account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers," the statement reads. Why Google Allo is amazing in one example:

A few weeks ago, I took a picture of myself and sent it to my lovely wife +Katie Ross. Google immediately suggested that it could add more to our conversation by noticing I was wearing a t-shirt for my Uncle's brewery, Crystal Lake Brewing Company. Then, Google asked if we'd like flight information from State College to Chicago. Wow, pretty cool. Then, Google showed us potential dates, prices, and an easy tap to view more information with Google Flights to buy plane tickets. That experience was really damn cool.

My Uncle's brewery just celebrated their two year anniversary. Since it's about a 12 hour drive for me and I have two small children, I haven't been able to make it there, yet. This little interaction made me really, really think about making it out there, something I'd love to do this fall.

My point here I guess is that sure, it's fun to try to get the Google Assistant to pop up by trying to force it into the conversation and of course you're going to do that because it's new and exciting. However, the true power is when it happens naturally, acting as a value added service.___

Yes, it kind of reminds me of an iPhone, but only slightly. Many phones look similar now a days.

What I'm most happy about though? Both phones look the same. That's one thing that bothered me about the 5X and 6P.

Can't wait.

Nice +Google Photos update here. Faster, easier sharing and more "AutoAwesome" context videos.

A faster way to share photos and videos, and all-new movies

Sharing all the photos from your weekend with friends can be hard: Not everyone uses the same apps, texting can be slow, and email has attachment limits.

Now, with Google Photos, you pick the photos, tap “share” and select the people you want to share with, instead of the apps — and we take care of the rest. If your friends are on Google Photos, they’ll get a notification. If you share via phone number, they’ll get a link to the photos and videos via SMS. And email addresses will get an email with a link from Google Photos. So you can spend less time toggling from app to app to share photos — dealing with failed texts or email attachment limits along the way — and more time enjoying life’s photo-worthy moments.

We’re also upping our game when it comes to automatic creations.

Google Photos has always made movies for you using your recently uploaded photos. Now we’re going further, with new movies that are based on creative concepts — the kinds of movies you might make yourself, if you just had the time. And they’re not only limited to your most recent uploads.

See examples and learn more on the Official Google Blog: https://googleblog.blogspot.com/2016/09/a-faster-way-to-share-photos-and-videos.html___Nice +Google Photos update here. Faster, easier sharing and more "AutoAwesome" context videos.

Uber's self-driving cars are here and available today in Pittsburgh.

What a time to be alive.

That said, they're not fully autonomous just yet. For now, two Uber employees will accompany every trip to monitor the car’s self-driving capabilities — one behind the wheel and the other in the passenger seat with a laptop displaying the data and images gathered by the car’s sensors. Uber’s ultimate goal, though, is enabling customers to summon a car on demand with nobody in in it.

So, +Don Dudas, I wonder how many Uber's we have to take until we get one? Let's plan on doing so some weekend in the near future.

DOH. The iOS 10 update is screwing up iPhones and iPads.

The issues seem fairly widespread. The OTA update begins and leaves users staring at a ‘Connect to iTunes’ screen that forces a complete firmware re-install. If you forego the wiping and re-installation of iOS from your iPhone or iPad, you’re left with a bricked and completely useless device.

Nexus 6P and Bluetooth issues on Nougat? Yep. You're not alone.

I've been mentioning this the past two weeks that I've had issues with Bluetooth, mainly Android Auto disconnecting and dying in a fire or my Huawei Watch being slow to receive and update notifications, but there's definitely an issue that all started the day I got Android 7.0 Nougat.

I flashed the latest OTA this morning, the official one with September security patches, build NRD90U. I'll be able to tell within 10-20 minutes tonight on my commute home if this fixes Bluetooth issues. Fingers crossed.

For what it's worth, my wife's Nexus 5X does not have these Bluetooth issues.

WhatsApp developers put 'fuck apple' in Android APK code

Haha, well, the title says it all, really. The WhatApp Android app contains multiple 'FUCK APPLE' references. I'm guessing these developers are not a fan of the fruit or they're upset at a certain hardware / marketing company that happens to make fairly strict appstore policies.

Huawei built Nexus / Pixel 7 specs reportedly leak

According to my buddy +Marco Lerch over at +Huawei Blog, Google and Huawei's upcoming tablet will rock the following specs:

7-inch AMOLED 2560 x 140 display
Snapdragon 820
Adreno 530 GPU
4GB of RAM
64GB of Storage
13MP camera

I know one thing, I really, really loved the 2013 Nexus 7. I bought it again and again for family members even after Google stopped selling it. The Nexus 7 was just that good and it felt great in your hands. I hope the follow-up is of similar fashion.

How to stream today's Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus event

Apple doesn't allow you to view their streamed events unless you're an Apple user (or use Microsoft Edge LOL). So, for everyone else, you know, most of the world, you'll want to do this.

Download the free VLC video player.
Open VLC video player.
Navigate to the Media tab and select Open Network Stream.
On Android: Hit the hamburger menu and the “Stream” option.
In the URL field, insert the following URL.

That's it!

Now, for those Apple fans out there, what are you excited to see?

Rumors are of the following:
Dual cameras in the iPhone 7 Plus
Waterproof or water resistance.
A missing headphonejack.... more »

Yes, nothing revolutionary here, as other OEMs have been doing these sorts of things for many years. That said, Apple will tout it is revolutionary and only something that they could pull off.

Huawei and Google reportedly still working on a new 7 inch tablet

Last year at CES, I heard that Google and Huawei were working on a "Nexus 7" tablet. Since then, we've only heard one or two reports to corroborate that information. Well, Evan Blass aka, dude in the know, recently mentioned that that project is still on track to be release before the year is over. Will we see a Nexus 7P or new Pixel tablet announced alongside the Pixel and Pixel XL next month? Who knows?
