Should we colonize Venus instead of Mars? By coincidence, I just wrote a story set on a Venus that has been terraformed. There are many problems. Atmosphere way too dense. Almost no Hydrogen (water).  Short of Nitrogen.  A day that lasts way too long.  All of which could be solved by sending millions of comets to Venus.  1/4 of them seep past the planet, stripping off some atmosphere. 1/4 hit!  In a way that speeds up rotation and donates millions of tons of water.  Sorry I can't offer any further details.  But check out the anthology OLD VENUS (edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Duzois) and have fun!  It contains my story.

Elise Seven Wolves

One of the fun things I've been able to do this year is play in +John-Matthew DeFoggi's amazing bimonthly #Numenera game. We're 14 sessions in now and still going strong, and I've fallen in love with both the setting (about which I was initially ambivalent) and the system (which is the slickest thing ever - very well-balanced, furthers the narrative rather than bogging it down, and is really easy to grasp).

I've been playing Else Seven Wolves, a Graceful Nano Who Hunts With Great Skill. Thanks to +Paul Mitchener's recommendation, I enlisted the excellent +Peter Frain to do some character art. I've held off commissioning a piece so far because I wanted to find someone who was up to the challenge of such a unique character, and Peter did not disappoint. The salt ponds (salineras) near Maras,  Peru
Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras, near Cusco, by evaporating salty water from a local subterranean stream. The highly salty water emerges at a spring, a natural outlet of the underground stream. The flow is directed into an intricate system of tiny channels constructed so that the water runs gradually down onto the several hundred ancient terraced ponds. Almost all the ponds are less than four meters square in area, and none exceeds thirty centimeters in depth. All are necessarily shaped into polygons with the flow of water carefully controlled and monitored by the workers.
The altitude of the ponds slowly decreases, so that the water may flow through the myriad branches of the water-supply channels and be introduced slowly through a notch in one sidewall of each pond.  It is agreed among local residents and pond workers that the cooperative system was established during the time of the Incas, if not earlier, to manage the intricate system. As water evaporates from the sun-warmed ponds, the water becomes supersaturated and salt precipitates as various size crystals onto the inner surfaces of a pond's earthen walls and on the pond's earthen floor. The pond's keeper then closes the water-feeder notch and allows the pond to go dry. Within a few days the keeper carefully scrapes the dry salt from the sides and bottom, puts it into a suitable vessel, reopens the water-supply notch, and carries away the salt. Color of the salt varies from white to a light reddish or brownish tan, depending on the skill of an individual worker. Some salt is sold at a gift store nearby.

The salt mines traditionally have been available to any person wishing to harvest salt. The owners of the salt ponds must be members of the community, and families that are new to the community wishing to propitiate a salt pond get the one farthest from the community. The size of the salt pond assigned to a family depends on the family's size. Usually there are many unused salt pools available to be farmed. Any prospective salt farmer need only locate an empty currently unmaintained pond, consult with the local informal cooperative, learn how to keep a pond properly within the accepted communal system, and start working (adapted from Wikipedia)___

Can you help me line up podcasting and guest post gigs in the near future?

Hey, gamers, writers, podcasting friends and bloggers:  I'm about to launch a crowdfunding campaign for a collection of my sf/f short stories called Journeys. I'm looking to line up some podcast interviews and places where I can guest blog at the start of this launch, which I am hoping will happen in the next 2 weeks*.

Why care about my project? Well, if you're in the fiction writing community, this collection represents an odyssey of many years writing, and the growth of a body of work that includes some interesting world building, and that's something I can talk about to your audience.

If you're in the rpg community, many of these shorts are set in rpg worlds that have also formed the basis of my novels with Tor Books. One is taken from a larger work that informed my world-building done for the Kara-Tur boxed set (the medieval Japan analog of Kozakura). And two of the stories are the foundation for adventure modules currently under development by Storybones (my rpg design studio).  I'd love to talk to your listeners/readers about the overlap between game development and fictionalizing a campaign setting.

Interested? Please email me at projects @ deborahchristian dot com (remove the spaces and change the 'dot' appropriately) and let's talk details.

Please share this to boost the bandwidth.

If you'd like to stay dialed in to this and other projects I'm working on, please sign up to my projects list, here: http://bit.ly/dtcprojects

Thanks!

*caveat: I'm having some internet connectivity issues which may delay the timeline on this--or not. TBD. I mention this by way of saying my schedule and timeline are in flux right now but I hope to nail things down shortly.___
