I've been reading some of the JISC articles - it is interesting that they have ICT proficiency in the middle of this diagram.  Is that where it goes?  Is that another way of saying "digital literacy?"  JISC is ahead of the curve so I wonder why that's the phrase they use.

Thanks +George Station for the great share

I’d like to emphasize:  you can’t have spaces that generate innovative practices without surrounding them with effective staffing and programming.  Building the spaces is the beginning (or should be) of an iterative process whereby the spaces are programmed, occupied, evaluated, and reprogrammed as necessary.

Who owns the thinking around holistic development of learning spaces at universities?  No consistent set of people.  And teaching staff don’t necessarily have the time or resources to lead that thinking.  There needs to be a dedicated well-compensated team whose work it is to think carefully about learning spaces all the time.___Thanks +George Station for the great share

Hmmmm .... They have a point with this. Adaptive learning comes in so many flavors... I thought I was crystal clear about the varieties until I had to teach a unit about adaptive learning, and wanted to explore all by actually using them. Some are so different than others! Even if the concept is easily understood, I understand this as an issue.

Interesting idea....

Blab.im - my first thoughts
So today I was invited by +Mike Downes and +Dolidh Young for a casual Blab. What Blab is you ask? Well, Blab is a very social engaging video chat platform. You can video chat with up to 4 people and the world can watch. It is like Periscope or Meerkat, but for 4 people. The big thing that really caught my interest is the social engagement bit.

The so called "lurkers (we <3 lurkers!) can chat with the people in the video call in real time while they listen to the ongoing discussion. They can even easily tag a question via /q <question> so the hosts can spot it better in the chat.

It combines live streaming video with video conferencing and live social engagement in a brilliant way. The host can also record parts or all of the Blab.

I really enjoyed this socially engaging conversation today with old and new friends. It definitely reminds me on the early days of Hangouts where we pushed the limits to extremes that no one thought of.

I am really curious where the team behind Blab will take the platform. They are in beta right now and soaking up all the feedback they get.

While I was in the Blab I had the pleasure to speak (and write) with some members of the Blab team to give them my ideas and feedback. +Brittany Metz was hopefully taking some notes :-)

If you want to check it out, head over to http://www.blab.im and give it a spin. I for once will surely do another one, so keep an eye on G+ and Twitter for when I go live.

"Affinity posting" - it has a name! and it's clearly what we all do.  The article is from +Mike Caulfield.  "I do a lot of affinity posting. So do you. If I retweet a John Oliver rant about the minimum wage, it’s probably not because there’s something particularly useful in the rant. It’s largely to show hey, I’m in this group too. You like this, I like this, and that’s a communion of sorts."   The article is an excellent read as always from Mike.

Does everyone agree that this is the usual experience?  Not me, it was just for a short while...during the initial iPad craze...."Even in my relatively short foray into office life, I notice that few people bring a pen and notebook to meetings. I’ve been told that over the years, the spiral notebooks and pens once prevalent during weekly meetings have been replaced with laptops and slim, touch-screen tablets." This is interesting, because I'm seeing the opposite. At least in my experience, there was a time when everyone was bringing iPads to take notes.   Now I always use a pen and notebook....and I see everyone regardless of age or business doing same.  When I say notebook, I mean Moleskin-type ??  Curious about everyone else...

I love +Jay Cross comments! Thanks for the share +Jane Hart..

<<I didn’t mention my suspicion that STEM dumbs down education. It’s explicit knowledge. Life’s grand lessons are largely tacit. Besides, isn’t STEM often the algorithmic knowledge that robots are going to being doing in a few years? When that happens, lots of STEM grads may find themselves in the position of John Henry, the steel-drivin’ man. Nobody here was talking about liberal arts and continuing the culture.

Consider the role of STEM education in someone’s career arc. A career is a marathon. College teaches people to run the first 100 yards. Running the rest of the race is the individual’s problem.>>

Running the rest of the race is the individual’s problem.>>___

Stakeholder buy in for learning in a corporate setting - good article thanks for the share +Stefan P. Schmid

The P in PLN does mean 'personal' to many most people.
A superficial, but nevertheless interesting view on why CSN's so often fail.

Another great post by +Phil Hill

New post at e-Literate.

In the meantime, Lone Star College (the entire system of 92,000+ students) selected D2L and is now using Brightspace as its LMS; however, the ECPS pilot had little to do with LMS usage. The primary intervention was an advising system and course redesign to focus students on understanding career options and related academic pathways.

Kids are learning a distorted view of the digital world "that reflects the fears of adults rather than the aspirations of youth."
We already knew this.
