Jeff Smith60,083Welcome to The Selfy Sunday Project for December 2/12PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS NOT FOR THIS SUNDAY, NOV. 25/12.Theme: Bond, James Bond!I want to see Selfy's that are inspired by 007 and the James Bond films. Lots exotic locations, action packed chases as well as numerous villains and sexy leading ladies to offer inspiration here. Doug Kaye62,203I'm still trying to catch this elusive gem. Moonrise is 7:52pm. Sunset is 8:18pm. From Hawk Hill the moon will rise behind the GG bridge and downtown San Francisco. We can't predict the fog. It's always a longshot in August. I'll get there about 7:45 after recording @110414918019803275342, so this will be a leaderless event unless someone (@102691005290181713701?) steps up. If it looks bad from Hawk Hill, we usually try Fort Baker (behind the big rock) just too see what we can get. The Park Service will probably close the gate above the roundabout by 8:30, so it's best to park below the roundabout and walk up as far as you need to get the best shot.Full Moon at the Golden Gate Bridge2012-08-02 04:30:0014G+

Gailen Mapes66,895Hand Picked Photographers Circles - Nikon Camera  J-K - 17 of 30Note: These circles are sorted by camera type and last name. They are split to not exceed 200 members.           These circles are photographers that I admire. They have "more photos, less spam."  There have been many additions and a few drops (mostly for spam or inactivity). Be sure to get all of the circles. Share! If you miss any of the circles they can be found at: +Gailen Mapes and scroll back to July 1st for the start of this set.  (Previous complete set was published starting June 1st.)  You can also use the #handpickedcircles hash tag and sort by "recent."I am hard up against the 5000 limit. From here on, I am going to have to become rather more strict about the "spam rules." Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...Because of the way that Google no longer presents every person who adds me to their circles to me it is quite possible that I have missed some pretty good photographers.  If I am following you, chances are that you are already in one of these circles or in my "check later" circle.  If you think you have been missed, tag a comment on one of these posts and I will check your profile out for inclusion.  Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:   https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday   #sharedcircles   #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle   #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle             #handpickedcircles             Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created by +2014-08-17 10:39:4399525CC G+

Charles Lupica83,296═════════════════════════════════     Top Photographers you should follow                 An Art of Photography Circle  Photographers whose art we think will amaze you ═════════════════════════════════#ArtOfPhotographyCircle tag to allow people to easily mute this post. It's been a while since I shared a circle here on G+ so I thought I would team up with +Scott Thomas and +Brian Dukes to share with you the first new circle I've created in more than a year.  We think you'll find that the photographers in this circle are some of the very best that G+ has to offer.  Of course you're probably already following people like Jeff Sullivan , Lori Hibbett, Jay Patel and  Vivienne Gucwa but we think that all of the people in this circle will add high quality content to your stream.  All share their amazing work and many of them share tutorials and resources to help you perfect your art. When deciding who would be in this circle, we used these guidelines• Sharing mostly their own work• When sharing the work of others, the work is clearly identified• Little to no, promotional material. • Some people are included that share a lot about technique but may not share a lot of their photography.• If they have gifs in their stream, they're almost always educational. • The images shared by these people frequently fall into the category of, "I wish I'd taken it" • They post to G+ on a regular basis,  For some this may be a little as once a month.  For others, this may be one or more a day.  People who post less than once a month are not included.  We prefer to circle people that are active here on G+. No one has asked to be in this circle, however, we intend to share a version of this each month.  *If you know of a talented photographer you'd like us to add*, please leave a comment and share the circle.  Doing so will get us to look at their profile. However, there is no guarantee that we'll include them in a future circle.   We want to maintain the quality of this circle.  Therefore, we will only add photographers that we would want to see in our own personal stream. Many of the photographers in this circle are well known so we are particularly interested in hearing your choice of photographers with fewer than 15'000 followers.  We would like to give them the opportunity to gain more views for their work. Please plus, comment and share.  This circle has no requirements for future participation but your support and encouragement is appreciated.I have chosen the name of the circle carefully to try to accurately represent the quality of the work by the photographers in it.  ValidationThis circle was very heavily vetted.  We have looked at each photographer's stream and decide that we would like to include them in this circle. +Charles Lupica (me), +Scott Thomas and +2014-06-27 17:39:05116934856CC G+

Thomas Hawk6,146,1772500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 3 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Last week I shared last name A-Da, and Da-Ho.  Today's , part 3 of 5, today, represents Ho-Mi.  I'll share the remaining two tomorrow and Thursday.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpnPart 2-5:  http://goo.gl/3vn0OC*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of "domain errors."  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-03 18:49:364857231117CC G+

Guidelines for inclusion can be found at:https://plus.google.com/u/0/103752943025677384806/about#circleshare #circlesharing #circleoftheday  #sharedcircles  #sharedcircle #sharedpubliccircles   #fullcircleshare #addmetoyourcircles #pixelworld   #pixelworldcircle #circleoftheday #bestsharedcircle  #thebestcirclesongoogle #thebestcircle  #handpickedcircles Note: the hash tag #handpickedcircles  should only be used to refer to these circles and other circles created 2013-08-08 10:43:21248618CC G+

Scrambler

Oh, did I mention that the new Sony a7s can shoot up to ISO 409,600? Sure, at that speed the images look pretty bad, but up to ISO 102,400 it looks damn good. And at 25,600 or less, it's excellent. Here's one shot at ISO 20,000. It's at night with just the ride's illumination. The real advantage of these high ISOs is that one can use fast shutter speeds (1/500 second here) to stop motion even in low light. f/4, 200mm. Notice how much the hair is moving! And very little correction in Lightroom. Tweaked the color temperature and exposure a bit, and I did add a bit of noise reduction, but look how sharp the image remains. And what terrific dynamic range for the ISO and lighting conditions.

4k Video for Stills

Although we call it High Definition, 1080p video is only a 2MP image. But the new standards for consumer UHDTV 4k video yields 8MP (3840x2160). That suggests you can now shoot video for the purpose of creating still images. Here's an example shot with the new Lumix LZ1000 at 30fps. The trick is to use shutter speeds that freeze action (1/250 second here) as opposed to the usual 1/60 second you'd use for video in order to give natural-looking motion blur. #LumixLZ1000   #LZ1000

Subglacial Eruption in Iceland

I always seem to have "interesting" timing. I'm heading to Iceland with +Martin Bailey is a few weeks and look what's possibly going to be waiting for us there. That is unless it erupts before we arrive and air travel is shut down like it was in 2010. Hey...it's always something!

Lumix FZ1000: All About the Gear

Panasonic has just released the latest in their eight-year series of “bridge cameras” — the Lumix FZ1000. It’s as easy to use as a point-and-shoot but the size of a small DSLR because of its 16x zoom.

Who’s this camera for, asks +Frederick Van Johnson? I answered, "For almost anyone." The image quality is good and the image stabilization is terrific. Combined with fast autofocus, 4k video (from which you can extract 8MP stills) and that 16x zoom and you have a camera that can be used for a wide range of tasks. #AllAboutTheGear #AAtG #FZ1000 #LumixFZ1000

It's All in the Details

Wrapped up my testing today of the Sigma dp2 Quattro for an upcoming review on #AllAboutTheGear . Here's an example of the detail you can get with this camera. I don't know how well you'll be able to see it on Google+, but at the very least, click on the image then zoom in. I've uploaded a 7.6MB full-crop 75%-quality JPEG. Check out the details in the ferns and consider that this is a very high-dynamic range scene. It's not straight out of the camera. I did use Photoshop to coax the highlights and shadows as well as sharpened the image.

(Ooh...I can see it looks like crap below. When you click on the image, make your browser full-screen, then use the zoom slider that appears in the upper-left corner.)

Sigma dp2 Quattro, ISO 200, 1/60 second, f/11, 30mm. #SigmaQuattro

Burrito con Style

Another sample from the Sigma dp2 Quattro for the upcoming review on #AllAboutTheGear. Stunning color and detail. Unfortunately her face isn't tack sharp. It was a very quickly taken shot. But her clothing, purse and the reflections in her glasses show this camera/lens combination off. One note: When properly exposed, the images from this camera can take a lot of sharpening before they get noise or other artifacts. #SigmaQuattro Friday in San Francisco with +Scott Loftesness

Sigma dp2 Quattro

Just started testing the new dp2 Quattro for an upcoming episode of #AllAboutTheGear . It's a strange camera in many ways, but Wow! What stunning images it can deliver. This 2.5MP JPEG -- click to see it -- is scaled down from the 20MP RAW file using default conversion settings. I think my more traditional cameras would have overexposed the red channel in this image. #SigmaQuattro

Sony RX100 MKIII (All About the Gear)

Sony updates its very popular RX100 MKII with a new third version. The camera is already being heralded as the best-ever compact or point-and-shoot. But at $800, it’s also the most expensive. The new model touts a cool pop-up electronic viewfinder (EVF) in lieu of a hot shoe, and an excellent new lens that mimics a fast (f/1.8-2.8) mid-rage 24-70mm (full-frame equivalent) zoom. The image quality is great, but at that price, +Frederick Van Johnson and I ask, “Who’s this for?”   #aatg

On the way to Ashland, Oregon for our annual Shakespeare Festival pilgrimage, +Cessna Kaye and I decided to spend a night at the Requa Inn, where I stayed and shot with +Michael Frye, +Claudia Welsh, +Scott Loftesness and others just last month. After a lazy breakfast we headed over to Damnation Creek Trail about noon. Made some shots with the Sony a7s that'll I'll work on next week, but just grabbed this quickly with my iPhone 4. Sony a7s: All About the Gear

The Sony A7s is being heralded as “Camera of the Year” by some reviewers, Frederick and I take a look at the third camera in Sony’s a7 series. While offering a sensor with only 12MP, the a7s is getting a lot of attention for a sensor that can shoot up to ISO 409,600 as well as being one of the first still-image camera that also produces 4K video. Does it live up to all the buzz? And who really needs a camera that can shoot in the dark? And what about that 12MP sensor? Isn’t that really heading in the wrong direction? I explains why 12MP may be enough for you and why a high-ISO sensor may be important to everyday photography.

And who really needs a camera that can shoot in the dark? And what about that 12MP sensor? Isn’t that really heading in the wrong direction? I explains why 12MP may be enough for you and why a high-ISO sensor may be important to everyday photography.___

Cuba Anyone?

A number of students and friends have encouraged me to organize a one-week photography-oriented trip to Cuba. Are you interested in joining us in January or February next year?

I've been there twice in the last two years and loved it. I've also found a terrific tour operator for US-legal tours that's about half the price of other opportunities and much better connected to real Cubans. For example, I first went with a group that charges about $5,500 for a week. My last trip cost about $2,000. (Roundtrip airfare to Miami additional for both.)

The itinerary I'm considering would include four or five nights in Havana, one in Viñales and two in Trinidad. If more people would rather focus entirely on Havana, we could do that instead. The trip would also include working with an organization of local Cuban photographers.

Lunchtime Opera on California Street

It's not the classic "Black Cat on Snow" challenge, but check out the incredible dynamic range from the Sony a7s. Bright mid-day mid-summer cloudless light. A woman in a black blouse under a black umbrella no less. Notice that there's still detail in her blouse as well as her left arm in the sunlight. And the reflections in the man's sunglasses. Only the white flower in the lower left is pushing the limit. If I showed you a lower-contrast image, you'd see even more detail at the extremes.

Try this with your own camera and see if you can get the same detail across the entire tonal range. I can't. #sonya7s  #a7s

Not in Service

Continuing to test the New Sony A7s for an upcoming episode of #AllAboutTheGear, I'm posting this image not as an example of great photography but rather to show what the A7s can do. I shot this at ISO 100 with an 50 year-old Leica 135mm f/4 Elmar. This JPEG is uncorrected from the original. Just Lightroom's default sharpening.

It would help if you knew the scene: the lighting at 11am in San Francisco and had seen the actual colors. What I can tell you is that (using automatic white balance) the color is extremely accurate. And because the dynamic range of this camera is so wide, the color contrast and saturation are also low. I'm almost at the point of saying this camera makes the best-looking images of any digital camera I've ever used. At least as good as the Nikon D4s and the Leica M 240. Kacia and Chicken

More testing of the Sony a7s at medium-high ISOs for the upcoming review on #AllAboutTheGear. This one at ISO 3200. Once again, just check it out for the lack of noise, dynamic range, color rendition, etc. This was shot inside a tent with a little daylight coming in from camera right and some dim fluorescent lights overhead. None of my other cameras come close.

Every Frame a Painting

Even if you're a still photographer and not into shooting video, I strongly recommend Tony Zhou's cinematography analyses on his YouTube or Vimeo channels.

I wish I'd had more formal education in still photography when I studied cinematography in grad school in the early 1970s. At least now I'm able to draw upon my training in film and filmmaking when I shoot stills.

Tony's YouTube (http://goo.gl/dzCuHG) and Vimeo (http://goo.gl/mXr7Xr) channels.

Lumix GH4: All About the Gear

The long-awaited latest Lumix “G” flagship camera breaks new ground: It can shoot 4K video and save it directly to an SD card. So this week we invited video guru Dave Dugdale to join +Frederick Van Johnson and me to give us his two cents.

Dave and I put the GH4 through some very different paces. I wanted to see what would happen if he shot 4K video specifically with the goal of extracting still images. Check out how well the GH4 did in both our tests. #gh4 #lumixgh4 #aatg

Sony a7s Dynamic Range

In addition to ISO 409,600, Sony claims an astonishing dynamic range of 15.3 stops for this new camera. While I have neither the facilities nor the expertise to measure the dynamic range accurately, I know what I see in the images and it's very impressive.

Here are three images in which one original RAW file is converted into three different JPEGs using Lightroom. The first has no corrections whatsoever. The other two were made from the same original with Exposure adjusted +/-2EV.

I chose this image because it was one of the highest-contrast shots out of nearly 1,000 I took on a summer day with extremely harsh light. It was taken at about 11:30am daylight time. The right side of the sign is brilliant white, but it still has detail. Likewise, the deep shadows aren't blocked up. There's detail there, too.

Arcade Glow

I'm still receiving skeptical comments about the high-ISO performance of the new Sony a7s, so here's another example at ISO 20,000. The original (with the amber color cast) is direct from the 12MP RAW file. It was converted to a downsized JPEG using Lightroom, but the only adjustment/tweak is Lightroom's default sharpening. I didn't touch a single slider. No changes to exposure, color, noise reduction, etc. The cooler image is after color correction, noise reduction and just a bit more sharpening. Check out detail in the hair, even in the uncorrected version. And consider how much detail there is all the way from the highlights into the shadows (ie, dynamic range). Few cameras look this good even at ISO 800 or about five stops lower sensitivity.

All About the Light

As +Scott Loftesness and I have both written, we've been exploring the fascinating reflected light that bounces between the office buildings in downtown San Francisco. Under more normal circumstances, we just pass on shooting at noon during the peak of summer. (A good time for lunch!) But these reflections can illuminate what would otherwise just be in shadow with all sorts of fascinating patterns and textures. Take a look at the shadows on the pavement to see all the different directions of light in this scene.

Caught this while testing the terrific new Sony RX100mkIII point-and-shoot for an upcoming episode of #AllAboutTheGear.

Ring of Fire

Okay, this one is for the skeptics. I got private messages from a few people who wondered if the new Sony a7s could really shoot at ISO 102,400, so here's an image that was. 1/500 second, f/4, 79mm. The only things I've done to this image are (a) apply the default lens correction in Lightroom, and (b) applied some noise reduction. No exposure or color-balance adjustments, crops, etc.

Is it good enough? Not for many applications, particularly those that require a large print. But is it good enough for other uses? You decide.

And remember, this thing was moving down quite fast. Note again the women's hair. There was almost no light on the people. Just an ambient glow from the Marin County Fair arcade. Not only is the sensor sensitivity impressive, but so are the autofocus, dynamic range and white balance. #Sonya7s   #a7s  For an upcominge... more »

Yesterday was my first day out with the new Sony a7s. I'll echo +Steve Huff's feelings: Wow! Of all the cameras I've used and/or reviewed for #AllAboutTheGear, the a7s produces the best looking RAW files straight-out-of-camera. The Leica M (240) comes close, but the a7s looks just great. Here's just one of many from the Marin County Fair this weekend. Just straightened and slightly cropped. Other than that, no tweaks.
