Chris Chabot142,395Dave Powell from shoottokyo.com is in town and organizing a photowalk Sunday the 14th. Next to being an awesome person, and fantastic photographer he's also something of an expert at photowalks after having organized ones in Sydney, San Francisco, Tokyo, Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong and Boston. *When:* Sunday April 14th, 2013 *Time:* 2PM *Where:*  Marina Green.  We will meet on the corner of Scott and Marina Boulevard.  We will shoot in and around Marina Green or wherever the road takes us.   After we lose light we will find a place to grab a bite and a few drinks. *Gear:* Pack whatever you are comfortable shooting with.  Remember, the more gear you carry the less photographs you actually take. We will be walking so don’t pack too heavy. *Who:* Photowalks are fun for everyone, and for all skill levels. From camera phones to  professional systems. It's all about the fun and about exploring and sharing with people with similar interests, so join us! Jeff Smith62,116Welcome to The Selfy Sunday Project for *December 2/12* _PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS NOT FOR THIS SUNDAY, NOV. 25/12._ Theme: *Bond, James Bond!* I want to see Selfy's that are inspired by *007* and the James Bond films. Lots exotic locations, action packed chases as well as numerous villains and sexy leading ladies to offer inspiration here. Or just stick to a more general "SPY" or cloak and dagger noire theme. Either way it should be fun. _Props may come in handy here!_ ________________________________ The Halloween SSP was the scariest, most ghoulish, terrifying Selfy Sunday ever. The submissions were amazing. Well done everyone. Doug Kaye63,737I'm still trying to catch this elusive gem. Moonrise is 7:52pm. Sunset is 8:18pm. From Hawk Hill the moon will rise behind the GG bridge and downtown San Francisco. We can't predict the fog. It's always a longshot in August. I'll get there about 7:45 after recording @110414918019803275342, so this will be a leaderless event unless someone (@102691005290181713701?) steps up. If it looks bad from Hawk Hill, we usually try Fort Baker (behind the big rock) just too see what we can get. The Park Service will probably close the gate above the roundabout by 8:30, so it's best to park below the roundabout and walk up as far as you need to get the best shot.Full Moon at the Golden Gate Bridge2012-08-02 04:30:0014

In a Moment of Weakness

Unfortunately I had my credit card with me when I visited the San Francisco Leica store a week ago with +Scott Loftesness. I had studied the specs and read the reviews of the Leica Q, but in person it was even better than I expected. I had pre-ordered one from B&H just to be on the waiting list, but B&H, Amazon, etc.,  still haven't shipped any Qs. Mine arrived at the Leica store today!

The Q is an amazing street-photography camera. It's about one-third the price of the flagship M (typ 240) when you include with the M a comparable 28mm Summilux lens, which is built into the Q. And the Q has autofocus!

You'll hear a lot more about it on an upcoming episode of All About the Gear. http://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-Q/LEICA-Q/ #LeicaQ

Canon 5DS -- All About the Gear

Nearly three years since the release of the popular 5D mk III, Canon has finally brought out the much-anticipated 50.6MP 5DS and 5DSR. Yes, these are the current leaders in the megapixel wars, beating out the 42MP Sony A7R mk II by a few months and megapixels.

These are clearly pedal-to-the-metal high-resolution still cameras. Video is barely an afterthought. (Canon has even stripped the headphone jack and clean HDMI outputs.) And the 5DS/R don’t have the advanced autofocus systems of the lower-end 7D mk II and 70D. These cameras aren’t intended for subject that move quickly. But put them on a tripod and add some high-end Canon glass, and you’ll get the highest-resolution images you can generate without going to medium format.

The new Leica Q images look great in b&w just using the default Lightroom conversion. Usually I have to do a fair amount of tweaking to get a decent monochrome, but images from the Leica Q are easy.

Leica Q: Day One

First full day shooting with the Leica Q. Because it was new to me, I didn't come away with any great images, but that's not the camera's fault. Just need to get used to it a bit more. Bottom line:

* Superb image quality (sharpness, contrast, color)
* Terrific controls
* Very easy to use (few distractions)
* A little quirky, but hey...aren't they all?
* A few features I miss, but no show stoppers

I'll post a few images over the next day or so to give you an idea of the quality. And we'll have a full review on an upcoming episode of #AllAboutTheGear

Sphere of Elusiveness

This damn sculpture has challenged me to make a good photograph for perhaps six attempts. +Swee Oh has managed to create some nice images. But not me. This is probably my my most successful result, but I know there are better interpretations possible. It's located just west of Embarcadero Center One at ground level in San Francisco. I'm not giving up! I'll be back soon.

All About the Gear: Panasonic Lumix G7

The Panasonic Lumix G7 replaces the two-year-old G6. It’s quite similar to the GX7, positioned between the GF7 and top-of-the-line GH4. Since it uses the same sensor (ie, same image quality) as the GX7, GM5 and GF7, why would you opt for this new model instead?

At US$800 with a good 14-24mm kit zoom, it’s a bit more expensive than the GF7, which has a somewhat inferior kit zoom. But it’s a whopping US$900 less expensive than the GH4. Gordon says the G7 is a good step up from the GF series — probably a better place to get started in micro four-thirds (MFT) cameras than the entry-level GF7 and for those not ready to spend the big bucks for the GH4. The alternative kit zoom is also a good option: a 14-140mm 10x zoom for only US$300 additional.

The alternative kit zoom is also a good option: a 14-140mm 10x zoom for only US$300 additional.

Like nearly all of the latest Lumix cameras, the G7 shoots 4k video directly to an SD card. But this camera takes seriously the idea of shooting 4k video at 30fps specifically with the intention of extracting still images from the video. Not only is there a dedicated mode for this purpose, but the G7 also offers a terrific feature to preview and extract the best frame in-camera, making the idea of 4k-video-for-stills much more practical than having to run the video through post-processing software. You can shook 4k video, extract a still, transfer it to your mobile device and post it online without a desktop or laptop computer.

As a bonus feature in this episode of All About the Gear, Gordon reviews two new ultra-wide MFT lenses from Olympus: the 7-14mm f/2.8 (reminiscent of the famous Nikon 14-24mm for full-frame cameras) and the 8mm f/1.8 fisheye. If you’ve been looking for an ultra wide for your micro-four-thirds camera, don’t miss Gordon’s review.___

Union Square Victory

I guess +Scott Loftesness is shooting me while I photograph this woman visiting from China in San Francisco's Union Square. Scott's Fuji X100T versus my Leica M6. As I recall, her husband really wanted me to take a photo of her, but not with him in the frame.

That's one problem with shooting film -- you don't see your images until a week after you've shot them, by which time you may have forgotten the circumstances of the scene.

She was there for a French fashion magazine, being photographed as she strolled aimlessly among the tourists who didn't quite know what was going on. While she was there for the magazine shoot, she was also kind enough to give us these terrific looks. With +Scott Loftesness.
