Magnitude || Monument Valley, Utah

With only one evening to shoot in this massive and spectacular landscape, my goal was to capture something a little bit different than usual. And thankfully, the sky cooperated with my idea of combining light trails leading down the long dusty road.

Monument Valley is incredible. It’s a location that I’ve seen so many times in films and having the opportunity to finally experience it in person was well worth the effort of getting there. My only disappointment was having just one single night to enjoy and take in the overwhelming magnitude of this classic American landscape.

If you want to learn my entire landscape photography and post-processing workflow from start to finish, both in the field and in editing, I've created an in-depth video tutorial course: http://bit.ly/landscape-tutorial

Snow Fall || Iceland

Sometimes I feel as though the beauty we find around us is just a reflection of the beauty found within us.

It’s from the inside in-which we peer out, watching, searching, analyzing the world around us. And by doing so, all it takes is a simple switch of perspective, our feelings, emotions or thoughts, and suddenly a moment—any moment—has the potential to be beautiful.

Most certainly the natural world can help influence that positive internal change, and I feel blessed to spend so much time all over the world seeing and experiencing new things, new cultures, and new landscapes, but all-the-while I try to never forget that the change happens within.

If you seek the world with an open and loving heart, you’ll always find the beauty you’re looking for.

Divinity || Florence

Henry Miller once said that, “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”

I feel like as a photographer, this quote has become increasingly more relevant to me the more years I travel the world. Each year, the world becomes a smaller place as global tourism increases exponentially in nearly all of the major travel destinations. And that means that it also becomes more challenge to visually portray these places in a new and unique way.

But saying that, the fact that so many photographers visit this location only motivates me. Since we can all stand here in the same place, I get excited about trying to capture something that has been seen countless times before in a new and interesting way. That’s why when a thunder storm rolled over the city center of Florence, I set up to capture the dazzling display! :)

Luminosity || Arizona

Traveling and spending the majority of my time abroad for the past series of years, I’ve had conversations with so many people who say that the landscapes in the Western United States are some of the most spectacular in the world.

Being that I’m American and after visiting more than 55 countries, I’m ashamed to say that this was the first time I’ve ever explored this much of my own country. And now, all of those conversations I’ve had with people all over the world are being proven true. The American West is phenomenal.

Full disclosure though, Upper Antelope Canyon is beautiful to see in person but because of that, it’s also incredibly busy as well. With so much going on around me, I was lucky to come away with a shot! :)

Moods of Manhattan || New York

Back in March when we first arrived for a shooting project in New York, it was a warm spring climate of 65 degrees. Then, the next evening when I captured this photo on the Brooklyn side, it was 12 degrees with a severe wind chill! It was so cold that I couldn’t feel my fingers while I was adjusting my 10-stop ND filter. Thankfully it all worked out because the sunset was absolutely incredible, and as a bonus, I also didn’t end up with frost bitten fingers. ;)

I’m excited to share this shot today because it’s part of a series of images I worked to capture in collaboration with Fujifilm using the GFX 50s Mirrorless Medium Format Camera and the brand new 23mm GF Lens, which was announced earlier this morning. And without getting too technical about crop factors and medium format, the 23mm lens effectively provides an 18mm focal length whichmakes i... more »

I’m also excited to share this because with the cascade of back-to-back photography projects I’ve had so far this year, along with the fact that these new GFX 50s images have been secret until today, I haven’t had the chance to share any of my new photos this year. That is, until now. :)

The Moments Between || Osaka Castle

Having enjoyed many visits to Japan over the past series of years, one of my all-time favorite places to photograph is Osaka Castle. Each year, I love searching for new compositions and angles that frame the beautiful architecture with the elegant cherry blossoms.

This season, I’m also shooting with the new Fujifilm GFX 50s, which I have to say produces some razor sharp and super detailed images. Hopefully I’ll be able to edit and share the results of some of my latest work very soon!

Until then, it’s time for more Sakura and Sake - though not necessarily in that order. ;)

In this shot you see two cameras. On the right, the Fujifilm GFX 50s shooting a vertical composition in 3:4 aspect. On the left, the Fujifilm X-Pro2 shooting in 3:2 and slightly more zoomed in. Let’s see which one comes out the best! :)

The Moments Between || City Views

Even though we had to cut our visit short to avoid the incoming blizzard, we still managed to have a blast in New York City, while capturing some phenomenal images in the process. And, I have to admit, changing our flights was a wise choice since the latest stats show nearly 8,000 flight cancellations in the region today!

It's also interesting that while I travel around 200,000 miles per year, I rarely have the pleasure of working on projects inside my own country. But this time—along with NYC and Las Vegas—we’ll be visiting and photographing some of the most beautiful national parks in the western United States. Add the fact that I'm using the new Fujifilm GFX 50s Medium Format Camera in the process, and the next two weeks are going to be exciting indeed!

I’m excited to announce our official partnership with DJI and the launch of the first ever, Worldwide Aerial Photography Workshop Series!

We designed these specialized aerial photography workshops to help students master drone photography and videography both in-the-field and in post-processing. Officially sponsored by DJI, these workshops also provide students with complimentary access to latest and most exciting drone and imaging technology available.

Well then, it looks like March is about to get much more interesting!

Next week, I’ll be starting an exciting new project that will give me the opportunity to shoot with the new Fujfilm GFX 50s in a variety of beautiful and unique destinations.

In the process, I’ll do my best to put together a ‘hands on’ style review, where I’ll share the results of what I capture, as well as the details about how this camera performs both in the field and in post-processing.

If you have any questions, feel free to comment below and I’ll do my best to answer them in the weeks to come.

The Moments Between || The Skies in Dubai

It’s great to be back in Dubai with this awesome cloudy weather and our sunrise shoot from the 42nd floor of the Shangri-La was the best sky yet!

I’m just about to wrap up filming this portion of Photographing The World 3 with Fstoppers and shift gears to Gulf Photo Plus. I’m really excited to be teaching 3 more workshops this year. It’s going to be fun! :)

Who’s going to be at GPP this coming week? We have more cloudy weather on the way!

The Moments Between || Sassi di Matera

After traveling through the Amalfi Coast and the little dolomites in the Basilicata region of Italy, we’ve already been enjoying and photographing incredible locations and views.

Matera however, is on a different level, especially considering the old city is completely empty during this time of year. It’s like standing in our own personal still life paining. It’s quiet, peaceful, and unbelievably beautiful. I’m excited that we have a few more days to explore this fascinating town. :)

All these location in Italy will be included in Photographing The World 3. If you’d like updates on when the videos will be available, follow the link below.

Meanwhile, this is happening. :D

The Fstoppers crew and I have already started filming in Positano and we’ll spend two more weeks photographing and exploring more beautiful parts of Southern Italy.

After Italy, we’ll head to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, followed by a few weeks in South America.

If all goes as planned, many of these amazing locations will be part of a new series of in-depth photography lessons.

If you want to follow along in real time, I’ve been creating daily stories on both Instagram and Snapchat.

Let the adventure continue!

The Moments Between || A New Chapter

When I was a kid, one of my dreams was to some day fill an entire passport. Now, fast forward to today, and since 2009, it’s a wonderful feeling to share that I’ve already completely filled three of them!

My old passport on the left is actually 74 pages thick (triple density), since I’ve added pages two separate times. The new one on the right is a 52 page (double density) passport, since the US Passport office no longer allows the addition of pages at a later date.

Since I’m leaving the USA and flying to Rome today, I’m also excited that the first stamp in this shiny new passport will be from Italy. I’ll try to keep this passport in better shape though. Just Saying. ;)

I’m honored and humbled to announce the release of the latest +SmugMug Film about our nomadic lifestyle. From the bottom of our hearts, a huge thanks to the entire SmugMug team for sharing our story in such a beautiful and inspiring way.

In 2012, +Naomi Locardi and I made one of the biggest decisions of our lives by selling nearly everything we owned and becoming 100% location independent, living on the road full-time and perpetually traveling the world. And while we expected this lifestyle to push us to the limits of our comfort zones and be full of challenges along the way, we knew in our hearts that it was the right decision. We were certain it was our path to take, and we haven’t looked back since.

Life is a series of actions, decisions. You grab hold of the things that catch your eye, the things you love, the things you want, need, and desire. But other times, it’s about letting go - pushing past the things you think you need to find the things you really need, so that you can be open to the opportunities that life puts before you. And I truly believe that in the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.

14 Countries, 78 Cities, 97 Flights, and 215,158 Miles! What an amazing year!

First, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the continued support with the kind comments, likes, plusses, tweets, and shares. It has been both an honor and a pleasure to share my photos and experiences with all of you and please know that you’ve all helped make 2016 a truly wonderful year.

Wow! 2016 has been a wild, perpetual and non-stop rollercoaster ride of huge projects and a ridiculous amount of flying. Looking back at the year, having taken almost 100 flights and logging over 215 thousand miles, I can’t believe we were able to take on so many projects while surviving all the airline food. ;)

It has been a wild (and jet lag filled) ride, and along the way, 2016 has continued to confirm for me that without a doubt, passion, hard work, and dedication will never go unrewarded.

This post is a collection of our favorite moments, favorite photos, and favorite memories from 2016. Thanks for being a part of it!

The Moments Between || Don’t Look Down

Actually, you should definitely look down. That’s the whole point! ;)

Seriously, Dubai is a cityscape photographers dream, where each building’s vantage point lends a unique perspective to the incredible skyline. More often than not though, the camera setups can be a bit tricky, as some of these rooftops were never really intended for casual city viewing, let alone a photographers tripod.

As you can see for this shot, I had to get a creative in order to shoot a pano with my Really Right Stuff Multi-Clamp, PG-01 Panoramic Gimbal, and Fujifilm X-Pro2.

I was recently able to thoroughly go through the new book Above The World by DJI, and I’m blown away by the wealth of beautiful images from around the globe. The book itself is also laid out perfectly - a huge congrats to Andy Knight for putting all of this together.

This is the first published book of drone photography in existence and I’m honored to have 7 of my photos included. In a matter of only a few short years, DJI has empowered us to see and capture the world from an entirely new perspective.

Nine Dragons || Shanghai

Over the past series of years, most of the building and high point access I’ve gained access to all over the world has been a result of research, seeking the appropriate permissions, getting some help from local friends, and even bribing a few security guards along the way.

Sometimes though, even after doing the necessary research and taking all the appropriate steps, I still need to do things the old fashioned way to get the shot. And what’s the old fashioned way? Well, it’s sneaking in of course.

Now first of all, I never recommend this to anyone because there’s always a chance you can land yourself in some serious trouble. But, if you’re willing to accept the potential consequences of your actions, sometimes the reward can be totally worth the risk.

Shhhhh… Don’t tell China. ;)

I just got my hands on the inaugural issue of the +Really Right Stuff, Light and Shadow Magazine, and I'm delighted to see my 8 page article as the lead story!

The article is about how investing time in photography will never go unrewarded and how creative vision, passion, patience, determination, and a whole lot of coffee all come into play when producing quality work that you can be proud of.

And speaking of being proud, hats off to RRS for creating such a beautiful magazine. There’s a wealth of knowledge and information from many talented photographers and artists. You guys rock!

The Moments Between || Dead Sea Sky

Saying that we had an epic sky at the Dead Sea this morning would be a massive understatement. For a few brief minutes, the sky burned with intense color and light. And then, just as the spectacle began to fade, it started pouring rain. What an incredible way to spend my last morning here!

Thanks once again to Adam Frimer for capturing the behind the scenes moment.

I've had such a great time here, but now, it's time to get ready for my flight.

Having the honor of speaking in front of 2,300 people at the Israeli Photography Convention was without a doubt one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had so far this year. It was also a very unique way to spend Thanksgiving Day!

A huge thanks to everyone for making me feel so welcome here, and a special shout out to the Galitz Team. I know how hard you all worked to put on an amazing event!

Big thanks as well to Adam Frimmer for the awesome behind the scenes photos. :)

The Moments Between || Shooting in Israel

Though I’m only a few days into my visit to Israel, I’ve already been able to explore and photograph many beautiful locations. There’s truly a wealth of history here a traveler to discover.

On the top, we found a great overlook of the old city of Jerusalem, and on the bottom, the perfect vantage point to capture the modern downtown skyline of Tel Aviv. What an incredible mix of both old and new!

Snow Fall || Iceland

I’m also excited to be spending two weeks is the country exploring, photographing, and teaching workshops in some truly beautiful locations. Israel has been high on my “must visit” list for a long time so I’m really looking forward to it.

Hope to see some of you there!

The Moments Between || Fully Armed Photographers

Multiple Fujifilm Cameras, DJI Drones, and Really Right Stuff Tripods? Let's just say that we were more than prepared to capture the areas around White Sands this morning!

Russell Brown from Adobe has been shooting 100% with his iPhone and Mavic, while I've armed myself with the Phantom 4 as well as my X-T2 and X-Pro2. (We didn't fly here in the State Park of course)

We only had a short amount of time to spend here but I must say, it's an extraordinary place. I can definitely see myself coming back here again in the future.

*And just as a bit of fun, the title "Fully Armed Photographers" seemed appropriate since we are right next to an active Air Force base. ;)

Shot on iPhone 6s+ and edited with Adobe Lightroom Mobile.

What does all this gear plus a cowboy hat all have in common?

Well, it’s all heading out west to New Mexico with me and Russell Brown where we’ll be exploring and photographing the Ted Turner Ranches and nature reserves.

I hope someone let the team know that I have no idea how to ride a horse! Hopefully the hat will help? ;)

Truth be told, I had to cheat and use Google Translate a little bit. I haven’t visited Italy for a while now so my language skills are getting a bit rusty.

The Moments Between || Winter Paradise

Over the past 12 days, we've nearly circled the entire ring road of Iceland, and throughout that time, we've been treated to very nice weather conditions for photography.

We even got lucky with the first and second snow falls of the season which transformed the already stunning landscape into a winter paradise.

Here, we enjoyed a long shooting session at Godafoss as the pristine snow accumulated all around us.

In addition to my Fujifilm X-Pro2, I decided to get some additional shots with the DXO One - a powerful little camera that attaches to my iPhone.

Here's a recent interview I had with Stuff TV about the incredible potential of DJI drones and the ability for photographers to capture never-before-seen images of the world around them.

I also discuss the best ways to get started with drone technology for yourself - something I highly recommend.

And of course, as usual there are a bunch of nice colorful photos to look at.

A huge thanks to everyone at Fujifilm for such a wonderful gift. It's an honor and a pleasure to work with all of you!

It's perfect timing too. I'm on the way to Iceland as we speak. Fingers crossed for northern lights. 😊✈️

The Moments Between || Endless Beauty

It's hard to believe that in a few days, our Dream Photo Tour to Bhutan will be coming to an end. The past two weeks have been an amazing experience, filled with epic landscapes, world class festivals, great friends, and of course, the friendliest people on the planet.

I want to thank everyone here for the genuine kindness, hospitality, and for everything you've all done to help us put this tour together. Your friendship means a lot to us!

Naomi and I will be leading another tour to Bhutan during festival season next year as well. The dates will be set in a few days and the info can be found here:

I feel blessed to be able to visit this beautiful country and I'm looking forward to many more visits to come.

The Moments Between || Bhutan Photo Tour

We definitely kicked off our Bhutan Dream Photo Tour with an awesome start by hiking up to the stunning Tigers Nest Monastery!

With swirling fog and soft light, the weather couldn't have been any better. On top of that, the Monastery was even decorated with gold flag trim for festival season. It made for a very unique and exciting shooting opportunity.

I'm excited to say that in a just a few hours, I'll be heading back to The Kingdom of Bhutan!

This visit is extra special because it’s our first official Dream Photo Tour to this phenomenal country, and I can’t wait to share my favorite locations with everyone who’s joining us.

If you’d like to follow along as we travel through Bhutan, I’ll be creating daily stories on Snapchat : https://www.snapchat.com/add/elialocardi

You can also find all the information for next year’s tour by following the link below.

Now, it's time to get a few hours of sleep before our very early flight. I'm pre-brewing a few shots of espresso as we speak. ;)

Starlight || New Zealand

This is a photo I captured while we were filming our Photographing The World Video Tutorial Series, when we camped out near Mt. Cook in New Zealand. It was a beautiful night and as the moon set on the left side of the frame, millions of stars became visible in the clear sky.

Because of the bright moon, there was also plenty of light to illuminate the iconic shape of Mt. Cook in the distance. It made for a very interesting shooting experience and a very unique shot.

While out there for the night, we also found out that Patrick Hall from Fstoppers has an irrational fear of possums. ;)

To learn the techniques I used to shoot and post-process this image, you can find all the info about my new tutorial video series by visiting: http://bit.ly/cityscape-tutorial

A huge thanks to everyone who came to see me speak on the Fujifilm Stage over the past few days. I’m truly humbled by the amount of support and it was wonderful to finally get to meet so many of you in person! I think we counted over 200 in the audience on Friday and today was more likely near 300! :)

My final presentation will be tomorrow at 12:20pm, again on the Fujifilm Stage. So you you’re still around Photokina, definitely swing by to say hello.

There’s also an Official Fujifilm Photowalk tonight that Naomi and I will be attending. It begins at 6:00PM in front of the Cologne Cathedral.

I hope to see you guys there!

I received a nice gift from Fujifilm at Photokina today. The newly announced GFX 50S Medium Format Camera! 😀

Just kidding, of course. While I was only able to have a few minutes of hands on experience with it, I can definitely say that it's going to be one of the biggest game changers in the photography world.

And yes, of course I tried to sneak it into my bag. I didn't make it very far. 😉

A huge thanks to Bruised Passports for the awesome review of my Photographing the World Tutorial Series. It's great to hear things from the perspective of such seasoned travelers.

Reading this while enjoying a freshly brewed espresso really made for an excellent morning. Maybe I'll have a second espresso and read through it once more. ;)

A Drone in Stockholm

I had a lot of extra drone footage from the recent tutorial I released about my Adobe Lightroom raw editing workflow. So much so that I decided to cut together a short video of all the best clips. Even though I only flew for 15 minutes, I was able to capture some very stunning angles of Stockholm Sweden. It truly is a beautiful city from above!

This was shot entirely with the DJI Inspire Pro & X5 Camera and was edited and color corrected in Adobe Premiere.

Complete Raw Processing workflow with Lightroom Mobile!

This video tutorial covers everything you need to know about Lightroom Mobile, all the way from shooting images in the field, transferring raw files to your mobile device, editing them in Lightroom Mobile, and syncing them to your desktop over the cloud. Not only that, this tutorial also takes things further by showing some of the Photoshop editing techniques I used to create one of my most famous photos from Stockholm, “Belly of the Beast.”

And the best part about it? It’s absolutely free!

Ios Sleeps || Cyclades, Greece

This past spring, Naomi and I spent 5 weeks exploring many different islands in the Greek Cyclades and Ios was definitely a wonderful destination for photography.

While we were visiting, we were fortunate to have excellent (and colorful) sunsets nearly every day - a rare treat in this area approaching the summer months.

During the entire duration of the trip, I was also working to promote local tourism by capturing some never-before-seen aerial angles of some of the less visited (yet still stunningly beautiful) islands. Let’s just say that you’ll be seeing quite a few new videos very soon. ;)

And no, though many new aerial angles will be coming soon, this shot wasn’t captured by my DJI Inspire Pro. Ios was also one of the locations I used to test the X-T2 prototype and prepare my detailed review.
