Lotus Carroll1,778,402This is the Event for our November Self Portrait Challenge: *Cinematic*. What this means is let your images be inspired by the look and feel of moving films, cinema, movies! Basically, they'll look like stills taken from a movie - drama, mystery, and action are all great genres to focus on. Location, lighting and angles will play key roles in your imagery, as well as your post processing technique for color, cropping, and more. Here is where you enter your ONE Cinematic Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST November 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* Like most things, there are many ways to achieve this kind of look (just as there are many styles of cinema!), so find a style that suits you and work with it. This @111480916026711337375 article has some interesting information that you might enjoy: http://goo.gl/KhWR79   A good thing to remember when creating your image is that _movies tell stories_. As such, the story being told by your photo will have a huge impact on how "good" the finished product is - does your one image effectively pack the punch to tell a story? I think that the greatest cinematic images have great scene, lighting, angles, post processing (color, cropping, etc) and ALSO have been set-up such that they tell a story with impact. Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. The header for this Event was created by @112528921891703025888.  If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/W69Ohj and ask away! We have a category for discussion and questions and are happy to help with anything.  *Prizes* *1 Year @118357019708110162087 Portfolio Account http://www.smugmug.com/features *$150 Gift Certificate for @108289626026839048870  http://www.borrowlenses.com  *@100266938567862344330 Blue Citywalker 10 http://goo.gl/qSqyOl *@101789561086090624750 Gift Code in the amount of $43.95 http://www.capturingcouture.com and @100424993750772730018 Free One Month Awesome Acct Please circle these sponsors - we love their products and services and it's great that they support our learning and growing together. Olav “ᚢᛚᚹ” Folland39,874So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005

Alan Shapiro4,112,640I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. You can watch it online later)Picking a camera bag...what to look for and how to decide what's right for you2013-10-28 01:30:0079

Christi Nielsen34,376*Everyone get ready for the G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk!*   Woot! We're meeting at Union Station at 6:30pm.  If you like architecture, Union Station has fabulous ceilings, lines, arches and more. We'll venture out into the surrounding area as well, and we just might end up on Olvera Street for some LA history and margaritas! =D Invite anyone you know who might be interested. They don't have to be on G+! *Photo contest!*  The categories are: Macro, Wildlife, Portrait, Landscape, Architecture, Black and White, and Sunrise/Sunset. The photo needs to be taken during the photowalk, and you cannot enter it in more than one category. I'll have more info at the event. You must be a member of G+ to enter the photo contest, so if you're bringing friends who aren't on G+, encourage them to create an account if they want to enter.  ****UPDATE:**** Here's the plan folks: We'll spend some time at Union Station, then head to Chinatown (7:15). Sun sets at 8:08 so we'll still have some light before the sun goes down. After that, the lights at night in Chinatown are pretty cool. Then we'll head back to Olvera Street (which is right across from Union Station). For those who wish to stay, we'll pop into one of the mexican restaurants there for food and margaritas!  I expect to be back at Olvera Street around 8:30, but you know things always take longer than you think, especially with photographers!  *We'll meet at the main entrance to Union Station* (Alameda street). If you come to Union Station via the metro lines, you'll need to walk down that long corridor to the other side. You can't miss it, you'll instantly see the high ceilings and fabulous architecture. If you don't see anyone with cameras, look for a Circus Circus wig. That'll be me.  I tend to like to know a little info/history about where I'm shooting, so here's a bit to get you started if you're interested. Union Station - "Last of the great railway stations" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(Los_Angeles) Chinatown - Was demolished to make room for Union Station - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatown,_Los_Angeles Olvera Street - Birthplace of Los Angeles - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olvera_Street   *Here is a link to info about photography and the Metro*. Keep in mind you *CAN* use a tripod in Union Station if you fill out a short form. You'll have go to the Security Office right inside the main entrance. If you can't find it, ask the Information Desk  (in the picture above). I'm pretty sure when you get to the other side (long corridor where you board regular metro trains) that regular metro rules apply (no tripods). But no worries. Just ask the security office for specifics when you fill out your form. http://www.metro.net/riding/getting-started/non-commercial-photography/ Wear comfy shoes! Let me know if you have questions or suggestions. Cheers!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk - Los Angeles, California2013-06-29 18:30:0063

Woot!! I'm going to be leading a photowalk this year! If you live nearby come on out and have a great time!

If you don't - check for one near you. They are a lot of fun and it doesn't matter what camera you have - cell phone to big medium format.

Happy #NationalAviationDay  ! This is a Boeing B-47E Stratojet at Castle Air Museum (http://www.castleairmuseum.org/) in Atwater, CA. It's a great place to stop and spend a few hours if you going up/down Hwy 99. They have a huge display of aircraft many of which are either restored, or in the restoration process. Since I last visited they've even added a former Air Force One aircraft!

On Sept 3 they're having their next Open Cockpit Day with all sorts of special activities for young and old.

Check out +John Chvatal , +Gazing Skyward TV , and the #NationalAviationDay  hashtag for more aviation posts!

#TBT - I can't quite make out who's in this photo, I think it's my Dad and Grandpa. It was shot by my Grandma back in 1972. It hadn't rained in the Grand Canyon in nearly a year - but of course we went and it poured - the day after they hiked back up. :) I was just wee small.

With so many (maybe all?) social media sites switching from an orderly time based feed to their algorithm of the day, they are ceasing to put my relationships first. They're turning sharing into a marketing game not just for businesses but for individuals as well. And they wonder why we are less engaged. Instead of allowing us to easily search for our own content they are shoving unwanted content in our streams, making it that much harder to find what we actually want. It makes everything less genuine.___

Washburn Point, Yosemite

I've probably said this many times, but Washburn Point is my favorite overlook in Yosemite. It's quiet, peaceful, you can sit and watch and listen to the waterfalls across the canyon. And late afternoon it's shady enough to be able to play with #ICM  without the need for ND filters.

This was such a peaceful day. The thing I love about Yosemite, is that even in the midst of a busy summer day in the Valley, it's possible to walk a few minutes and be completely alone. The Merced River was just below my feet, there were two itsy bitsy baby ducks sitting on a rock in the sun, and not a single human in sight.

I stumbled across this fun little website today - http://thecolorof.org

You enter a hashtag and it pulls colors from posts on Instagram with that tag. You can adjust the number of bars, blur, rotation. This one happened to be from #28ToMake  But it's fun to try random tags to see what comes up.

California Buckeye - Aesculus californica

These trees are rather cool and unique. They're native and only naturally grow in California. They are deciduous, but exactly opposite most other trees. They drop their leaves in the summer, as a way to conserve water use. They have huge flower spikes in the spring that attract butterflies, then drop their leaves to become little sculptures with their twisted trunks and branches.

While this covering will eventually crack open to reveal a chestnut looking nut - they are mildly toxic to people - causing "intestinal distress".

So hopefully my #fridaysarebokehlicious  and #funkygoat  friends won't try and eat one :)

The Aldebaranians are a lot like us. They love cows, lone trees and windmills. It's a tough life there, the winds are always blowing and the tidal forces from the huge moon are always mucking with things. But because of that, they have the best hot air balloon races in the solar system ;)

Special thanks also to +Robin Griggs Wood for reminding me to play and always feed my muse! :D

If you aren't following +Lori Carey you should be! :)

She's one of the hosts of #SignSunday but also a fantastic "serious" photographer too. And a genuinely nice human being. :)

Congrats again on the exhibit!!

(please comment on Lori's post!)

I'm incredibly excited that my photo is one of 35 that have been selected by juror Jane Fulton Alt for exhibition at The PhotoPlace Gallery's "A Sense of Place". I've been spending so much time lately photographing Jeeps to pay the bills while my heart is really in fine art and struggling with finding balance, and since I like to photograph strange things I find in the desert it can be hard to find a good fit for images, so this is a great mental boost for me on many levels. I'm doubly excited because of the qualifications of the juror -

Jane Fulton Alt’s photographs explore universal issues of humanity and the non–material. She is the three-time winner of Photolucida’s Critical Mass for her Katrina and Burn portfolios, recipient of the 2007 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award, and multiple Ragdale Foundation Fellowships. She has authored two books; Look and Leave: Photographs and Stories of New Orleans’s Lower Ninth Ward, and The Burn. Her Crude Awakening portfolio was published worldwide.
She received the Photo District News 2011 Curators Choice Award and the 2012 Humble Arts 31 Women in Art Photography award. Alt’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Smithsonian National Museum of American History, New Orleans Museum of Art, De Paul University Art Museum, Southwest Museum of Photography, Beinecke Library at Yale University, Centro Fotografico Alvarez Bravo in Oaxaca, Mexico, Center for Photography at Woodstock, Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, and the collection of William Hunt.

The Call for Entries:
Photographs that convey a “sense of place” blend the physical characteristics of a scene, landscape or object with the mysterious essence that emerges from gradually and perhaps unconsciously inhabiting a place over time. The photograph ceases to become an objective document. Instead, it takes on a particular feeling that is invested with something that is often intangible, revealing a deeper understanding of what lies beneath the surface.

A special thanks to +Marc Briggs for his personal guided tour of Carrizo Plain, mostly in the rain! You helped me feel the Sense of Place in a way that I wouldn't have discovered so quickly on my own. I hope to be able to join you out there again one day.

...the funny thing is, I've been so busy with Jeeps that I haven't even finished processing all of the photos from this trip or made the gallery public on my website yet.

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NOT DEAD!!!

I just had the bestest customer service experience from +PayPal . I applied for the card reader, and in doing so had to answer some security questions - including one I missed because it was a bit obscure :) . That triggered putting a hold on my account and having to answer some more questions - one of which I wasn't able to to the nature of my business.

So I looked up their support number, it gave me a code to enter when I called, which nicely brought up all the details of my issue so I didn't have to repeat everything. Within a few minutes the kind agent had my account all cleared up and back in business. YAY!

Thank you! It's so nice to see businesses - especially online businesses do this well!

#Plusfinity  !!!

Are you new to Google+?

I've seen a lot of new faces in the past few months and it reminded me of my first few months on G+. I remember what it felt like when I first joined about four years ago. I had no idea how to see content from other G+ members. Google has fixed that problem and new users have lots of content to choose from. You may want to be a consumer of content and that's it. Great. There are many others like you.

Some of you may want to participate a bit more but don't know exactly how to do it. That is what I felt like four years ago. This is where I can give you a little help because I've been there. Just follow these three easy guidelines:

1. Comment on posts that interest you.

Did you see something that you liked? Did you read something that you had a reaction to? Do you watch a video that inspired you? Yes? Well type something about your feelings, ideas, reactions as a comment on the post. Or read the other comments and reply to those.

2. Post about things that interest you.

Thinking about something and want some feedback? Post about it. Is there something you know a lot about and like sharing that information? Post about it.

3. Circle people.

Did you like a comment that someone made on a post? Circle that person. Do you like what a person is posting? Circle that person.

Basically, interact. Interact like you would at a party. If you don't talk to people, they won't talk back. People want to interact with you, not a meme so it's better if you do more than reshare posts. Be the original person that you are. Tell the world about you and what you know.

Need help getting started? Check out this post https://plus.google.com/+DenisLabelle/posts/h7sCsFe7DaU.___ #Plusfinity  !!!

After sitting in the woods for so long, I decided it was time to head home. But on the way there was a bright flash of light and suddenly I was in orbit far above the earth. Surprisingly the aliens were not interested in tests, dissection or other nasty things. They simply needed an objective judge for their swimming race! :)

After the race they dropped me back off at my truck, so I was able to edit while hanging out with the +Leo Deegan +Mai Huong +Yvi San and +Cilla C Happy Friday everyone!

+Alien Abduction Friday

After sitting in the woods for so long, I decided it was time to head home. But on the way there was a bright flash of light and suddenly I was in orbit far above the earth. Surprisingly the aliens were not interested in tests, dissection or other nasty things. They simply needed an objective judge for their swimming race! :)

After the race they dropped me back off at my truck, so I was able to edit while hanging out with the +Leo Deegan +Mai Huong +Yvi San and +Cilla C Happy Friday everyone!

You know that feeling when you are sitting in a dark forest, it's warm, there's just hints of sun coming through the thick fir, pine and ceder trees? Maybe a few bugs catch the light now and then. You start to doze off and everything stretches and blends together?

A different sort of #bokeh  for all my #bokehlicious  friends because among other things #fridaysarebokehlicious  . Always. Have a great weekend and do the #funkygoat  !!!

Since +Chinh Luong keeps posting photos of one of my favorite places, I had to go and dig this up. This was from one of my favorite birthday roadtrips. It's quite a different place in fall compared to spring when Chinh visited. While his oozes with lovely primary colors, when I was there it was a dusty self induced monochrome fuzzball. But I still loved it! :D

And it's time for the second installment of the wacky things people in my neck of the woods either do themselves, or call the police for. :) I'm kind of disappointed in them actually - between the 4th of July and the County fair things were rather quiet. Just not a good couple of weeks for bears or produce!

4:53 p.m., — Two juveniles stole two melons from a melon patch on Tuolumne Road at Wards Ferry Road.

3:03 p.m., — Something was stolen on Cemetery Avenue.

9:47 p.m., public intoxication — A group of drunk women caused a disturbance in a Greenley Road parking lot.

1:10 a.m., — Two people played a game on their cell phones while inside a car parked on Bay Avenue.

7:44 p.m., — A man and woman stole watermelons from a Wards Ferry Road farm.

10:01 p.m., — A Main Street person heard a loud band playing in a barn.

10:50 p.m., — A man was on Westhill Road at Nall Street yelled obscenities and something about his dog.

3:23 a.m., — A “skinny white guy” tried to get into a cabin on Highland Way.

6:37 p.m., — Someone stole a Donald Trump sign from a lawn on Longeway Road.

3:15 p.m., — Residents at a nursing home on Greenley Road slapped each other several times at breakfast. Neither person was injured or later recalled the incident.

7:20 a.m., — A man on Gibbs Drive wanted to know if there were bears in the neighborhood and if it was a safe neighborhood.

7:49 p.m., reckless driving — A driver, who appeared to be under the influence, fell asleep in the drive-through of a Mono Way fast food restaurant.

4:29 a.m., controlled substances — A woman walked along South Washington Street with her breast exposed.

I was looking around in my old film photos and found this. And it made me chuckle. Someone had set a series of stuffed animals along the fence posts on a backroad near me. I hope everyone finds a way to discover a bit of calm, whimsy and love this weekend. ♥

The other day I was trying to decide where to go for fireworks. My favorite spot to view wasn't having them this year because of the drought/fire danger. And the other options just didn't sound as appealing. So, last minute decision we decided to go up to the pass and do some star gazing instead.

Ever since I saw this article http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/06/10/481545778/light-pollution-hides-milky-way-from-80-percent-of-north-americans-atlas-shows?ft=nprml&f=1007 I was just so sad. I'm fortunate to be in the 20% and a short drive from some pretty dark skies. I cannot imagine living in a place where it's not visible at all.

It was a fun, but quick trip. It was cold!! And I didn't plan on going here when I left my house in the morning. I went from a high around 100, to near freezing when I shot this. Soooo I must go back. And plan ahead... more »

Soooo I must go back. And plan ahead and rent a faster lens! This photo really doesn't do the sky justice. It was bright enough that you really can imaging reaching up and touching the stars, and each minute your eyes adjust makes another batch of dim stars visible. Happy sighs. :)___

So how did it get to be July already? I seriously don't remember it being June! Sunflowers are one of my favorite summer flowers - especially the wild ones growing along backroads. I could sit and watch them dance in the wind all day. As long as I'm stocked with iced tea.

Happy early 4th of July, late Canada and happy weekend to everyone outside the US and Canada!

Happy 5th Birthday Google+ !!!

This is one of my earliest, fondest memories of G+. A few months after it started I heard of this photowalk hosted by +Trey Ratcliff . I had no idea what to expect, I don't think I even knew what a photowalk was at the time. But that night opened up so much to me! In this photo are many people that I've laughed, learned, taught, been inspired by, and simply enjoyed many great adventures with.

Before this I never even considering meeting someone I met online - but the first two folks I met were +Chris Chabot and +Karen Hutton  and they are two of the best ambassadors for people. Period.dot.com. :)

Thank you Google plus for bringing us all together - I look forward to the next 5 years!

#GPlus5

Here's the group photo from tonight's +Trey Ratcliff photo walk at Stanford. It was great to meet everyone and put real faces to the Google+ profile photos! Thanks again to Trey for organizing this.

A few people asked for the details on how this shot was done so here it is...

This was by far the largest group shot I've ever taken and I wasn't sure how many rows of people were going to be in the photo until right before I took it. Assuming the worst, I setup four Ranger Quadra packs outfitted with bare heads and wide reflectors. You can see two heads in the photo lighting the front and middle. The other two heads are high camera left and right on C stands aimed at the back in a cross pattern.

The Quadras were set at ~3.5 power giving me ~f/11, ambient light was dialed in at 1/60 s.

I was going to put the camera on a tripod but didn't feel like messing around with it on those steps. Instead, I wound up shooting the Phase One IQ140 with a 35mm lens, hand held, at ISO 400.

I think there are over 150 people in this shot. I've tried counting heads on my screen a few times but it's late and I keep losing track of who I already counted...help.___Happy 5th Birthday Google+ !!!

I'm starting a new Collection today. It's not really like anything I normally post about, so I understand if anyone chooses to unfollow

It's mostly going to be a collection of random goofy things that happen near me :) The joys of living in a rural area are endless! They'll be some photos, some humorous articles, and like today, the "best of" the local emergency calls. I didn't make these up... honest!

3:14 p.m., — A man, described as about 20 years old with a black eye, claimed he walked to Joaquin Gully from Jupiter with an animal inside a jar of dirt for his daughter.

7:38 a.m., — A man said a woman on Oak Street assaulted him with a frying pan while he was sleeping.

6:23 p.m., — Roommates argued over mayonnaise getting put down the drain on Wards Ferry Road.

This is a really sweet article about him, and his buddy the Zonkey

"I would like to see us get this place right first before we have the arrogance to put significantly flawed civilizations out onto other planets, even though they may be utterly uninhabited. "

-Patrick Stewart

On mornings like this I can imagine this area being another planet, far far away. Perhaps the sunbelt of Hoth. It was bitter cold, everything coated in glittery diamond frost, but there was a fog belt over the river, and especially over the hot springs dotting the area. It really was one of the most beautiful mornings I've ever seen.

Somewhere running around was +Derek Kind (the tracks are from a rabbit, not him !)

This makes me so sad. I'm so grateful I can look put my window at night and see the Milky Way. And even a short drive gets me to even darker skies. I think I'd go nuts living in a city for this reason alone. There's something very soothing and grounding about looking up and seeing star after star after star.

A happy #FridaysAreBokehlicious  day to all! This is one of my favorite plants in the Sierras - Snowplant - Sarcodes sanguinea (which translates to bloody flesh thing). A Saprophyte, it's one of the few plants that does not contain chlorophyll. Instead of producing it's own food, it is a parasite on Mycorrhizae fungi in the soil which has a partnership with the conifers in the forest. Often it will sprout up before all of the snow has melted which is where the common name comes from.

It was a welcome sight to see so many of them last weekend, the last few years they have not been as plentiful.

See http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/plant-of-the-week/sarcodes_sanguinea.shtml for more information about it - (my favorite line is Snow plant is difficult to confuse with other plants, and indeed stands a better chance of being confused with a misplaced piece of meat.

Happy #WorldsOceanDay  !

No matter what part of the world you live in, or how far from the coast, oceans are vitally important to the health of the planet. They drive weather (good and bad), provide food, transportation, recreation and serenity.

When I was little we lived in SoCal and sadly my clearest memory of the beach was having to clean the tar off my feet because of oil spills. It was only much later and in NorCal that going to the beach became fun for me again. And for a few short years I was fortunate enough to live close enough to hear the waves crash late at night. While I'll always be a mountain girl, I love the northern coast, with it's rocky crags, tidepools, and glimpses of the redwoods in the mountains above.
