Landscape Photography Show13,606*Landscape Photography Show #47: Fill the Frame* "Fill the Frame" is often the first advice given to a beginning photographer.  That's what we will focus on in this event.  For landscape photographs, that can be done in one of two ways.  1. Do it with through the viewfinder.  Move yourself to the proper location and angle or zoom in/out if your camera does this until you get a pleasing image that "fills the frame".  You don't want any extra space or elements that will distract from your composition.   2. Crop your photo to eliminate that meaningless extra space that doesn't contribute to your composition and eliminate distracting elements. *Special Rules* 1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a scene where you have "Filled the Frame". 2.  In a comment on the photograph tell us about this photograph. Where is this place located?  What were you trying to achieve?  What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?   We want to know the details about your photograph. THE COMMENT IS REQUIRED. 3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well. 4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL.  If you post the work of someone else, you will be removed from the event. 2) You MUST have complete EXIF data for your photo.  Within the event, select your photo and view it large.  Look for the "photo details" on the right.  It should be complete with the date the photo was taken, camera and lens information, ISO, f stop, speed etc.  Photos that don't have complete EXIF data will be removed.  Others will learn from seeing what you have done. 3) Only ONE photograph per person is allowed.  If you submit more than one photo, all of your photos will be removed. 4) Circle the @114888971165518552849 page. 5) Photos must be posted no later than Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT.  Those posted after that time will be removed. 6) Curator favorites will be shared to the @105588730866970114510 theme page.  Circle the curators and engage them in conversation.  You will learn lots from them!! 7) Curators of the @114888971165518552849 and the @105588730866970114510 theme may participate. 8) Technical Requirements: Enable "sharing" on your photo.  If it receives honors, we want to be able to share it!!  Enable "comments" on your photo.  We want to say how great it is!!  Enable "plus ones" so everyone can give it a big plus!! *Voting:* Feel free to leave positive encouraging comments on the entries at any time.  You know our photographers will love the attention.  Engage in conversation and see what you can learn!! *AFTER Monday, July 27, 2015, 10 am CDT (when the event ends) and BEFORE Friday, July 31, 2015 at noon CDT, you may add another comment and include the hashtag, #LPSFavorite LPS Event #47: Fill the Frame2015-07-20 17:00:00394

Landscape Photography Show13,606*Landscape Photography Show #45: Vertical Rule of Thirds* In the last event, we explored how to set a horizon using the horizontal rule of thirds.  We're continuing with this strong rule of composition by looking at the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  This event will be starting later today so you have a chance to carefully read all the rules. Some landscape photographs really appeal to us and others seem boring. Do you know why?  Your brain is being stimulated by composition, color, and contrast and it's all subconscious.  Your photos can be more interesting and appealing by knowing rules of composition and when to break those rules. Remember in the last event that you imagined two horizontal lines in your viewfinder that divided the space into three equal spaces.  Now, also imagine two vertical lines that also divide the view into thirds.  You now have a grid much like the tic-tac-toe game.  The four points where the lines intersect are called focal points.  We will have more about them later.  For now, we will focus on the vertical lines.  Does your landscape have a strong vertical element that you want to capture?  Let's say it's a single tree.  We often like to put that tree smack dab in the center of the photo.  We may capture the tree but the photograph is boring.  Try putting that tree along one of the vertical lines separating the space into thirds.  Now the photograph has some drama and added interest.   That's what we want practice with this event.  Use one of your vertical lines to capture a strong vertical element.  Don't forget the Horizontal Rule of Thirds and Horizon that we had in the last event.  We want both rules of composition used in this event!! Knowing when to break the rules is important too but make sure you have a good reason to break the basic rules of composition.    *1.  Share your landscape photograph that displays a strong vertical element using the Vertical Rule of Thirds.  Keep in mind the horizon from the last event.*   *2.  In a comment on the photograph explain how you used this technique in your composition.  If you break the Vertical Rules of Thirds, tell us what you are trying to achieve.*   *3.  Other participants will be discussing how you used this technique and asking you questions.  Please join the discussion on other photographs as well.* *4.  This event is all about PARTICIPATION and DISCUSSION.  Please don't post a photo and leave.  The LPS reserves the right to remove photos without your comment.*    *General Rules:* 1) Your photo MUST be ORIGINAL. 3) OnlyLPS Event #45: Vertical Rule Of Thirds2015-06-22 19:00:00408

Lotus Carroll1,773,235This is the Event for our November Self Portrait Challenge: *Cinematic*. What this means is let your images be inspired by the look and feel of moving films, cinema, movies! Basically, they'll look like stills taken from a movie - drama, mystery, and action are all great genres to focus on. Location, lighting and angles will play key roles in your imagery, as well as your post processing technique for color, cropping, and more. Here is where you enter your ONE Cinematic Self Portrait. Your photo must have been captured during this month. This Event remains open until 11:59 CST November 30th, so you have until then to create and enter your best photo from this month. (The dates on the Event are truncated, but you can submit a photo anytime, all month long.) Please read all rules (scroll down). Not adhering to rules will get you disqualified. *Tips & Inspiration* Like most things, there are many ways to achieve this kind of look (just as there are many styles of cinema!), so find a style that suits you and work with it. This @111480916026711337375 article has some interesting information that you might enjoy: http://goo.gl/KhWR79   A good thing to remember when creating your image is that _movies tell stories_. As such, the story being told by your photo will have a huge impact on how "good" the finished product is - does your one image effectively pack the punch to tell a story? I think that the greatest cinematic images have great scene, lighting, angles, post processing (color, cropping, etc) and ALSO have been set-up such that they tell a story with impact. Moderators of the Art of Self Portraiture Community are not eligible to win, but we will also be putting our photos into the Event in the hopes that you'll be inspired. The header for this Event was created by @112528921891703025888.  If you have questions or need help, please pop into the Community http://goo.gl/W69Ohj and ask away! We have a category for discussion and questions and are happy to help with anything.  *Prizes* *1 Year @118357019708110162087 Portfolio Account http://www.smugmug.com/features *$150 Gift Certificate for @108289626026839048870  http://www.borrowlenses.com  *@100266938567862344330 Blue Citywalker 10 http://goo.gl/qSqyOl *@101789561086090624750 Gift Code in the amount of $43.95 http://www.capturingcouture.com and @100424993750772730018 Free One Month Awesome Acct Please circle these sponsors - we love their products and services and it's great that they support our learning and growing together. Olav “ᚢᛚᚹ” Folland39,450So, my employer owns a cabin in the Truckee area, and believe it or not in the twelve-ish years I've never actually used it.  What better way to kick it off with a photowalk in the mountains?   I can't promise snow, but it's the shoulder season so either way it shouldn't be very crowded.  It also doesn't look like the Kings fire will affect the area so there should be plenty of scenery along the way. We can accommodate 15 people, maybe 20 if folks are willing to bring their sleeping bags.   Lodging in the cabin is *free*, and there are also hotels in the area for those that would rather have more creature comforts.   Either way, it should be an awesome time.  I'm not super familiar with the Donner/Truckee area to be honest, but we're researching and also hoping to crowdsource some venues as well. I'm generally inviting my "North Bay Photowalks" circle, but feel free to invite anyone else as well.  Cabin space is first come, first served however. edit:  This is timed to coincide with the full moon (which is on Thursday) so not so good for star trails, but fun for night-time landscapesLet's go to the Mountains!2014-11-07 12:00:005

Alan Shapiro4,134,255I'm continually flabbergasted (I love saying flabbergasted. Say it with me. Flabbergasted. Now say it ten times while pretending you just got your tongue pierced. Cool.) at the sheer number of certain products available for photographers. Choosing a camera bags has got to be one of the more time consuming and frustrating experiences. And a bag is one of the products that is really important right? We're carrying expensive gear around and want to protect it. But then it has to be comfortable. And easy to use. After spending far too much time searching online and walking the aisles of B&H, Adorama. PhotoPlus Expo most recently in search of the perfect camera bag, I decided to ask a friend, +Peter Waisnor from +Tenba to spend a half hour with me to talk about choosing a bag and what to look for in a bag (while promising me to stay as neutral as possible despite making *the best bags in the world.*) Join us tonight from 8:30pm - 9:00pm EST (5:30pm - 6:00pm PST) for our Hangout On Air (which will be recorded so if you can't make it, no worries. You can watch it online later)Picking a camera bag...what to look for and how to decide what's right for you2013-10-28 01:30:0079

Christi Nielsen33,922*Everyone get ready for the G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk!*   Woot! We're meeting at Union Station at 6:30pm.  If you like architecture, Union Station has fabulous ceilings, lines, arches and more. We'll venture out into the surrounding area as well, and we just might end up on Olvera Street for some LA history and margaritas! =D Invite anyone you know who might be interested. They don't have to be on G+! *Photo contest!*  The categories are: Macro, Wildlife, Portrait, Landscape, Architecture, Black and White, and Sunrise/Sunset. The photo needs to be taken during the photowalk, and you cannot enter it in more than one category. I'll have more info at the event. You must be a member of G+ to enter the photo contest, so if you're bringing friends who aren't on G+, encourage them to create an account if they want to enter.  ****UPDATE:**** Here's the plan folks: We'll spend some time at Union Station, then head to Chinatown (7:15). Sun sets at 8:08 so we'll still have some light before the sun goes down. After that, the lights at night in Chinatown are pretty cool. Then we'll head back to Olvera Street (which is right across from Union Station). For those who wish to stay, we'll pop into one of the mexican restaurants there for food and margaritas!  I expect to be back at Olvera Street around 8:30, but you know things always take longer than you think, especially with photographers!  *We'll meet at the main entrance to Union Station* (Alameda street). If you come to Union Station via the metro lines, you'll need to walk down that long corridor to the other side. You can't miss it, you'll instantly see the high ceilings and fabulous architecture. If you don't see anyone with cameras, look for a Circus Circus wig. That'll be me.  I tend to like to know a little info/history about where I'm shooting, so here's a bit to get you started if you're interested. Union Station - "Last of the great railway stations" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(Los_Angeles) Chinatown - Was demolished to make room for Union Station - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatown,_Los_Angeles Olvera Street - Birthplace of Los Angeles - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olvera_Street   *Here is a link to info about photography and the Metro*. Keep in mind you *CAN* use a tripod in Union Station if you fill out a short form. You'll have go to the Security Office right inside the main entrance. If you can't find it, ask the Information Desk  (in the picture above). I'm pretty sure when you get to the other side (long corridor where you board regular metro trains) that regular metro rules apply (no tripods). But no worries. Just ask the security office for specifics when you fill out your form. http://www.metro.net/riding/getting-started/non-commercial-photography/ Wear comfy shoes! Let me know if you have questions or suggestions. Cheers!G+ 2 Year Anniversary Photowalk - Los Angeles, California2013-06-29 18:30:0063

Thomas Hawk7,954,560The one and only @111863388502434056486 Guru @103519655975029093996 is coming to town and we are going to celebrate in style.  Join us on Thursday, October 11th for a special dinner / photowalk.   We are going to start the evening off at 5:30pm at Henry Hunan's on Sansome Street in San Francisco (note there are several Henry Hunan's, this is the one on Sansome in North Beach).  We'll enjoy some of San Francisco's best chinese food and then head up to go shoot the tallest building in SF, the Transamerica Building at sunset/dusk.  We'll shoot the building from the Montgomery Street overlook -- one of the best locations to shoot This iconic William Pereira spire from.   Afterwards we'll float around North Beach shooting more of the historic architecture and night life before ending up the night at Specs' Twelve Adler Museum for a few later evening adult beverages.   Specs' is a throwback to old school San Francisco that the SF Weekly describes as "one of the few bars left where you can ask for a martini and get a cold glass of gin and a little vermouth without having to answer a bunch of damn fool questions." Rumor has it the smoothest dude alive @101651096660571767183 will also be joining us from NYC and @105873814765821560444 will be up from Los Angeles.   What a great night for photography this will be.  Come on out for a great G+ Photography evening!A San Francisco Dinner/Photowalk with Gordon Laing2012-10-11 17:30:00136

After waking up to more spam on my posts - and spam directed at real people kind enough to genuinely comment on my posts I've had to limit my settings to who can comment to extended circles. If that doesn't help they'll be shut off completely.

I hate doing this as I get comments from people who I have no obvious connection to. I'm sorry to have todo this. If you find yourself unable to comment, you can always do so on my website where I can filter spam before it is visible to everyone else.

Thanks for understanding.:/

I FINALLY REMEMBERED #SIGNSUNDAY - before Monday rolled around! This was a brief break in the rain last week. Waves hi to +Lori Carey +Jetski and Janice, who I can't seem to find to tag.

P.S. Uploading a photo from my phone is a horrible UI experience.

P.S.S. So is tagging people.

I need help from my Scandinavian friends! I've been looking for a good recipe for Norwegian Flatbrød. We used to get a box mix that had several kinds of flour ( I think oat, barley and wheat ). I have tried oodles of recipes on the internet and none of them taste quite right. Unfortunately the company that makes the mix has gone out of business, and the last box was thrown away :(

Anyone have a good old family recipe they'd be willing to share?

Yep. This. Algorithms by all companies seem to be less and less relevant to what I want to see. Even when I specifically say I want to see "X" in my stream, search results, etc. I keep getting shown "Y" only to find "X" buried somewhere.

The other problem - more so in Social Media feeds than in Search/email results is that algorithms seem to think if I like/plus/heart a post about something, say cows, that it means I want to be buried under an avalanche of cows. Now I DO like cows, but I also like fish, pigs, trees, tomatoes, grains, stars, and a gazillion other things. Algorithms seem hell bent on compartmentalizing us.

The other danger is I see more and more of my friends stuck in their own little echo chambers. This only leads to more and more misunderstandings (deliberate and unintentional). And quite frankly flat out ignorance as to other... more »

A friend reminded me that I have not posted for a while - the last month or so has been very busy (mostly in good ways!). One of the really fun things I did two Fridays ago was be a second shooter at a beautiful wedding in Yosemite.

#plusfinity  this.

At this moment in history I feel a need to take inventory and separate out what I KNOW from what I believe.

Here are 10 things that I KNOW:

1. I KNOW that the Earth isn’t flat — We don’t live in the two dimensional world depicted on maps. We live in a beautiful, iridescent, interconnected and interdependent biosphere teeming with life.

2. I KNOW that we are stronger together — Our nation’s greatest accomplishments have all come from us banding together and rallying behind a common cause. The biggest problems facing our country and our world will only be solved when we figure out how to set aside our differences and work together.

3. I KNOW that fear is one of the most destructive and divisive forces on our planet — Fear is a natural response to a real threat but beyond its evolutionary importance it can also be counterproductive to long-term peace and security if we allow it to divide us.

4. I KNOW that Labels can be counterproductive to progress — The labels that we put on ourselves and others can box us in, they can erect walls and barriers to cooperation that separate people and groups that hold unique and often critical pieces of the puzzle. Failure to incorporate all the pieces of the puzzle prevents us from solving our biggest and most seemingly intractable problems. This is why I don’t label myself. I am not a Democrat or Republican. If you feel you must label me, the most accurate would be, American Earthling.

5. I KNOW that empathy, understanding, reason and truth are keys to real progress.

6. I KNOW that Climate Change is Real — Human activity is contributing to an increase in planetary temperature with catastrophic implications if not mitigated.

7. I KNOW that in many cases people living in poverty are enterprising, resourceful, creative and hard-working but are being held down primarily by circumstances beyond their control. Changing those circumstances will not only help those impoverished but also, in the long-run, it will help all of us.

8. I KNOW that the political playing field is stacked against us — Corporations, special interest groups and those that can afford to buy political influence have entirely too much power in our nation. Special interests are normally narrow interests and do not take the long-term, overall well-being of our nation or our world into account.

9. I KNOW that the overall well-being of our nation is vastly more important than the increase of political power of any political party.

10. I KNOW that regardless of the outcome of this election, we need to band together as Americans to repair divisions, heal our nation and fix a broken political system.___ #plusfinity  this.

Sometimes you search and search for the right thing to say only to realize there is no right thing. Oil is not more important than treaties, respect for the dead, or other's property. I had hoped the U.S. government had learned from how poorly we treated the pre-European settlers, but no.

Today was slightly insane. So I'm at the Oceti Sakowin camp at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, and I had just finished an interview with Linda Black Elk, the liaison between the herbalists and the campers, and Dr. Sara Jumping Eagle, a physician on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, outside of their der (pronounced like bear...apparently the real name for a yurt), when a truck came by. The driver saw my media badge and instructed me to head towards the ridge - something was happening. We looked up towards it and there was a line of police officers and DAPL security all outfitted in full riot gear with rifles all pointed in the camp’s direction. Behind them was a visible piece of the pipeline being moved while tractors prepared its path on the other side. So I jumped in a van with Dr. Sara Jumping Eagle who took me towards the action. We stopped in a thicket of brush to watch from afar for a little while, and started noticing a group from the camp start to make their way up the ridge towards the officers.

They were face to face.

Things were tense.

As I was standing there shooting some footage, a pickup full of tribe members came by and told me to hop in the back, so without thinking (in retrospect probably not the best practice to get into), I did. I jumped in the back of the truck and headed towards the action. I jumped out when I started to feel I was getting a bit too close for comfort. I set up my camera and tried to figure out what was going on. Horses with whooping indigenous Native Americans came flying by me, drum lines came passing by, and prayer began on the riverbank below the officers on the ridge. There was obviously an agenda on both sides, but it was unclear what that was. Several rumors began to circulate. One was that some water protectors were crossing the river to test the waters and see if they can get to the construction site to block the pipeline. Another was that the DAPL side was using that as a diversion while they proceeded with construction on an unseen portion of the ridge.

I still don’t know.

But I do know things were definitely coming to some sort of head.

Meanwhile, helicopters, private planes, and drones with facial recognition were allegedly violating no-fly zones to keep a watchful eye on the 'savages.'

Now here's the fucked part - the original permits for this thing apparently had the pipeline routed to cross the Missouri River 30 miles upstream near Bismarck, the capital of North Dakota, but they denied it because...get this...they were worried that it might contaminate their water!

So they decided to move it downstream.

Less than a half mile from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and their main source of water.

And here we are.

Anyhow, the crowds dispersed and regrouped in various parts of the camp.

Soon after, while I was offloading and decompressing back at camp when I heard some hoopla near the spirit fire, a communal gathering place in the center of camp, a base for announcements, ideas, prayer and ceremony. While the action was happening, a member of the UN was at camp, and this was a bit of a debriefing of what was said and is being done.

After the briefing I got a chance to speak with Roberto Borrero of the Indian International Treaty Council, human rights observer accompanying Grand Chief Edward John of the U.N., about his role in the report that will be presented to the U.N. regarding human rights violations as well as the issue of criminalizing the water protectors, and the man that was standing right next to him, who happened to be Doug Good Feather, the Executive Director of th Lakota Way Healing Center and…get this…grandson to Sitting Bull.

I couldn’t help but realize at that moment what an honor it was and how lucky I was to be here.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to capture many pictures as I was there for a job, but fortunately, that job was to capture a lot of this on 360 video for Al Jazeera America (AJ+), and they’ll be releasing bits later this week and next.

With all that being said, do not believe any of the bullshit of the ‘violent’ protestors. Literally everywhere you turn, it’s prayer circles and ceremonies. Literally.

The only violence so far has been perpetrated by the DAPL side. I’ve already spoken with a group of medics who were beaten, arrested, marked and thrown into dog kennels while they were treating injured protectors. I also met another journalist who had taken pictures of a horse that was tasered and had to be put down, as well as an elder as the riot police tore his ceremonial peace pipe from his hands before knocking him to the ground with batons.

To add insult to injury…imagine this…your uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins, parents, brothers and sisters are buried on your property. The U.S. government sells that piece of your property to someone that isn’t related to you at all, despite a long standing treaty that you have the rights to the land. An oil company comes in with tanks, an army of armed police, a fleet of bulldozers and digs them all up. Do you think you’d experience a bit of trauma? Well, that’s EXACTLY what’s happening to all the people here. That’s what’s been happening to the indigenous communities for over 500 years. Is it all coming to a head?

So if you don’t care, goddamnit start caring. Because if you don’t care about water, then you don’t care about life.

It really is as simple as that.

#WaterIsLife #NoDAPL #StandWithStandingRock #ClintonsACoward #DonaldsADick #StandingRock #NorthDakota___Sometimes you search and search for the right thing to say only to realize there is no right thing. Oil is not more important than treaties, respect for the dead, or other's property. I had hoped the U.S. government had learned from how poorly we treated the pre-European settlers, but no.

Whooooot it's Friday already!? Really how did the week fly by so fast? I'm both trying to get work done, and listening to the lovely rain come down. It's not too cold, and not windy so I can get away with having the window open a bit to listen and let the sweet clean smell waft in.

Hope everyone has fun plans for the weekend! I get to tour a haunted town tomorrow night :D Should be lots of fun!!

Congratulations - you've made it to Friday - and #fridaysarebokehlicious  I'm feeling a little bit like this dried up leaf right now, but like it I can see the golden light at the end of the tunnel.

Even though a nice storm is supposed to be heading this way! I'm oddly excited about that actually, rain will be a welcome change here.

Argg. This isn't the best preview link - but the short version is Panoramio is going away as of November 4th. It's not terribly surprising, but not much advance notice either.

It's a bit disappointing that Google recommends becoming a local guide instead - the two are quite different in my experience! And there's no interaction like there was on Panoramio.

If you ever contributed to Panoramio there are a few options to choose from to handle your photos.

Never miss another great Community post

Great conversations make for vibrant Communities, and there’s no better conversation starter than an interesting post. But with all the activity lively Communities have, even the most compelling posts can slide out of view before you have a chance to see them. To make sure you never miss out on what’s up, we’re changing the way Community posts are displayed to show you the good stuff first.

Starting today, whenever you visit a Community, you’ll see the most high quality, relevant posts up top, rather than the just the most recent ones. Of course, if you’d like to switch back to chronological view, it’s easy to do so from the Community Settings / Preferences menu.

We’ll be rolling this out gradually, so please visit your favorite Community and let us know what you think!

Yesterday I was chatting with +Denis Labelle about how I manage my G+ notifications. I've primarily changed to viewing them through GMail instead of Mr. Jingles or browsing G+ Streams.

There are a number of reasons why I do this, but basically it boils down to it's just easier for me as I have more control over what I see, and GMail search is pretty awesome.

I wrote about it on my blog, as it needed quite a few pictures to show each step. And if you find an error, let me know so I can fix!
