"Dus gij weet, waar het dossier is, en..." En toen gaf hij de geest. Net voordat hij iets over de bergplaats leek te willen zeggen.

Het verhaal over het gestolen paneel 'De Rechtvaardige Rechters', onderdeel van het door Van Eyck geschilderde Lam Gods in de St Baafs in Gent leest als een Hollywood scenario, ware het niet dat het verhaal waar gebeurd is en dat het originele paneel nog steeds niet terecht is.
De zaak leefde weer op toen een getuige de KRO reporter uitzending in 1995 zag. De getuige, een vrouw, had als 12-jarig meisje te horen gekregen nooit met iemand te spreken over wat zij, angstig achter een grafzerk gezeten, op het kerkhof had gezien: een Duitse officier met 2 soldaten, die ze, zo later bleek in opdracht van Hitler, graven zag openen op zoek naar het gestolen paneel.

Here is another sculpture by Chiharu Shiota seen at ARNDT during Art Basel Hong Kong 2013.

A sea a black threads attached to a metal frame suspends a horn in mid-air. The threads create a cocoon, a place for the musical instrument to float in air like magic. It feels like that you should be able to reach it, but you cannot as the web is in the way. The thread web creates the volume, even though the volume is mostly made with air. It is contained, yet it is not. 

It is an academically sound creation. Serious yet fun at the same time — and it is easy to see why I absolutely adore this artist by the end of the show.

What happens when you string hundreds of hexagonal pieces of mirrors with vibrant concentric stripes together? A magical 3D kaleidoscope, it seems. 

This installation titled “Supertaster” by Los Angeles-based artist Pae White is nothing short of being magical. With each step that viewer takes, the sculpture seems to change. And perhaps even more incredible is that its appearance changes depending on where the work was installed, as its myriads of mirrors reflect the sights from its surrounding.

In this stunning work, the insignificant becomes extraordinary. Highly recommended.

NSA whistleblower lost faith in Obama: now depends on Hong Kong
 The Guardian revealed today that they got their revealing documents from Edward Snowden. A former CIA technician who worked for the NSA and says that he gave up  _"a very comfortable life" that included a salary of roughly $200,000, a girlfriend with whom he shared a home in Hawaii, a stable career, and a family he loves. "I'm willing to sacrifice all of that because I can't in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they're secretly building."

He fled to Hong Kong as he is aware the US government will come after him and he expects more safety in the Chinese enclave than on American soil. Hong Kong has autonomy over extradition so it won´t be the Chinesegov... more »

Forêt pétrifiée

Les milliers de troncs fossilisés de la forêt pétrifiée datent du trias (environ 200 millions d'années). La région était alors occupée par le delta d'un fleuve sur les rives duquel poussaient des arbres géants. Après leur mort, ils furent enfouis sous des dépôts sédimentaires riches en silice, ce qui favorisa la conservation de leur structure. La silice remplaça lentement la matière végétale et fossilisa les troncs. Progressivement, la région s'enfonça et fut ensevelie sous des strates sédimentaires. Son soulèvement récent, conjugué à l'érosion permit la mise au jour des troncs fossilisés.

p.s. I don't like the use of the technical phrase "top down" since it isn't accurate. The most "top" is our consciousness, and we can't consciously force ourselves to perceive the data correctly; pre-conscious processing trumps our conscious will.

China's Growing Ranks of Elderly Beset by Depression, Study Says - Bloomberg

China’s old people are plagued by depression, illness and poverty, a survey showed, illustrating the challenge the country faces as its restrictive family-planning policy results in a surge in the elderly population.
Among people 60 years old and over, 22.9 percent, or 42.4 million, live on annual income of less than 3,200 yuan ($520), compared to 15.1 percent of people age 45 to 59, according to the survey, conducted in 2011-2012 by a team of academics from China, the U.S. and the World Bank which surveyed 17,708 people across China.

Nike Sports Factory News NOT REPORTED in the USA.

At least 23 workers were hurt in Cambodia when police used stun batons to end a protest over low pay at a factory that makes clothing for sportswear company Nike. They are demanding an increase in pay to THREE DOLLARS a DAY!
Over 3000 women in Cambodia are striking with the goal to raise their monthly income from $74 to $96 dollars.

Nike certainly shows how much it cares for women's rights. Sun Vanny, president of the Free Trade Union (FTU) at Sabrina, told Reuters news agency the injured had included a woman who was two months pregnant and who had lost her child after military police pushed her to the ground.

Memorial Day Beginnings Historic Tid Bit...

KNOW YOUR HISTORY: Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated.

Thanks to Abstrakt Goldsmith for this nugget of history that most of us never learned in school.

Sounds logical... If the country decides on giving a low tax-rate to lure in some big multi-nationals... Then they shouldn't complain these companies pay that low tax-rate... 

Interesting thought also... What if a company wouldn't mind to pay a higher tax-rate... How would you do that?

And even if they could pay a higher tax-rate in UK... wouldn't that lead to an obligation in all other countries where they are active?

+Eric Schmidt makes sense here... These companies aren't doing anything illegal... If a country wants more tax incomes from these companies, just change the law... :-)

The team at Studio Lebedev (www.artlebedev.ru/everything/stubus/)  designed the ‘Stubus’ Watch to be lightweight and waterproof. The device is banded together with high quality leather and has a circular glass face over the wood rings. At first glance, the piece looks like a small cut of a tree trunk, but if you look closer, you’ll find the second hand and the hour hand cut into the wood.  A complicated device, hidden in a simple object.
