Why You No Watching Agent Carter?

Okay so the second Season of Agent Carter is firmly underway now and the ratings are... shit. As in it's achieving series lows and it's vastly under-performing not just compared to Agents of SHIELD but other ABC dramas too.

So why aren't people watching it?

Well it's a tea rose to be precise and you can't smell it at all because, you know, it's a photo, but quoting Shakespeare makes me sound clever and stuff. I'm still practicing with my new camera lens. The previous shots were mostly about taking advantage of the low light capability. Here though there was plenty of light and I wanted to work with depth of field.

Once you get down to f1.7 it gets really tricky to get the right bits of the image in focus. I actually misjudged this slightly and the stamen are out of focus, but the petals are nice and sharp so I can live with it. The value of that shallow depth of field is obvious though because it isolates the flower from everything else which fades into a nice blurred background.

Also look at the shutter speed when the lens is this wide open. There's not much risk of camera shake at 1/2500 of a second. This is what... more »

Spring Morning

Spring in the Washington DC area is a season of wild fluctuations. One day it's 25 degrees and freezing cold, the next day it's 70 and beautiful. In fact it's quite capable of covering 30 degrees within 12 hours. It's a mystery to me how the flowers know what to do. On this occasion though it was a beautiful and incredibly bright spring morning.

The second season of Marvel's Daredevil is not as strong as the first, but calling it a sophomore slump would not only be cliched, but overstating things. Much of what made the first season of the show enjoyable remains but there are some pacing and focus issues that mark things down a notch.

The first four episodes of the season form what I have internally referred to as the first Punisher arc. While what happens here is built on later they do feel like a complete story that could have been told on its own. It's bleak and slow moving (particularly in the first episode) but narratively coherent.

The show in general has been great concepts and characters that don't seem to gel well, but this one... yuck.

We have the tedious flashbacks that try to make us care about Rip Hunter's dead wife (we don't). We have the Time Masters who turn out to be an organization will pointless rules. While it started out looking like a semi-faithful adaptation, at this point The Shannara Chronicles has drifted so far from its Elfstones of Shannara Chronicles that it's headed into "inspired by" territory.

They've pulled in characters from later books; they've made stuff up completely and they've also omitted quite a lot.

In and of itself this isn't a horrible thing. I can enjoy a very loose adaptation. Unfortunately though every decision they've made has been to make the story more predictable and cliched.

It's still not a bad show, it's just not actually very good and the wasted potential is hard for me to set aside.

When you read about his behavior 20 years ago suddenly his recent outbursts against Megyn Kelly no longer seem like petulant bullying but instead part of a larger and very disturbing pattern.

Your world will not end because Doctor Who is off air for a year.

Re-watch episodes, read the books, listen to the audio dramas.

Or watch other things...

This is not a tragedy, you are not re-enacting Romeo and Juliet. Hell it's not even the worst thing to happen to you this week.

Legends of Tomorrow S01E02 - Pilot Part 2 mini review

Well it was definitely better than the first episode, but it has the same basic weakness. Any time the primary plot comes to the fore (or the Hawks get screen time) everything bogs down in tedious exposition. And it's still happening far too often.

But this time we get a lot more of the stuff that works. Big superhero team battles, absurd time travel conundrums and just wonderfully over the top comic-book stories. I can even excuse the abominable lack of strategy in the Hawk's attack on Vandal Savage given that the entire episode proved that this team is not good at working together.

That said I do wonder if the show wouldn't be a lot better with them just bouncing around from timezone to timezone without having to bother about Savage at all.

So Iron Fist Has Been Cast?

Or at least Mike Colter (Luke Cage) seems to think so. It's not often they manage to keep this stuff secret.
