Scott Jarvie429,378*POST YOUR GOOGLE+ ALBUM OF PICTURES* It's been very very popular event in the past and I'm finally doing it again tonight. _This time it will be more organized, more heads up than usual and even a live event._ *SHARE AN ALBUM/GALLERY LINK* It's simple and easy but a lot of work and very fun for all. You simply share an album here and I'll be going through every single one of the albums. Then I will +1 the pictures in the album that I'm really drawn to. *BENEFIT* Well it's simply if you'd love to know which pictures I like most.  I always loved knowing which pictures people really love of mine because it helps me have an eye for which pictures are best received. It's a huge part of becoming a better photographer in my opinion. _*To be able to put out great art is first to know what great art looks like*_ *ON AIR* This will be something new... I'm going to go through all the albums Live, Online as an On-Air hangout. I'll talk a little bit about what I'm doing. If the show goes well I'll keep it for later viewing on YouTube... if the recording isn't great I won't. *SPECIAL GUEST* Because I want to have an outloud conversation about what and why I'm doing things  I will have my good friend and great photographer @109486822103622036238 on the show to facilitate the discussion. She will also visit a lot of these albums and +1 pictures as well. We ask that everyone add her to a circle ... not just because she's awesome (though that's reason enough) but so that if any of these albums are by mistake limited access she will have access. *DIRECTIONS* 1. Paste a link of a Google+ image gallery 2. Put a title or description of what we'll see in the album 3.  *IMPORTANT* If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and perhaps your profile in a recorded Youtube video. 4. Make sure the album is Public access 5. Add @100962871525684315897  @109486822103622036238 to your circles 6. Return the favor. Take some of the other people's albums and +1 some of your favorites. *IMPORTANT* It bears repeating: _If you post a link you hereby give us permission to use a screenshare view of all those pictures and your profile (maybe) in a recorded Youtube video._ Do not post a link if you are not ok with lots of people visiting that link in addition to us and are not ok with it being on video as well.Share your Album- A Jarvie PlusOne Critique Experience2012-09-12 05:30:00143

The blog has been pretty quiet lately because I've been busy with client work and a new project I'm excited to announce today. I've started a brand new podcast called The Photocast.

Going beyond the typical gear reviews and photography tips, I want to head into subjects that surround working photographers. Things like business, marketing and how I maintain my sanity balancing work, family and faith. This will also be an interesting show for amateur photographers who want to make the jump into full-time photography.

I need your help getting this started and off the ground. The easiest way you can help is by subscribing to my podcast. Next, If you know someone that might interested, let them know.

I'm also interesting in finding other working photographers that want to be a guest on the show. No broadcasting experience required :P

I was strolling through some of my early work this afternoon and found this shot I never processed. With more hot summer days behind us than those in front, I processed this like one of the  summer sunsets we've had recently.

I've got an opportunity for someone who'd be willing to model for me. I need some simple shots for a lighting e-book I'm working on. If you're interested, please message me for details. Someone in the Red Bluff through Redding area please.

Sometimes you can look through images that you've taken in the past and one of those older photos will hit you harder than the first time. This is one of those photos of Michelle at her wedding.

How about it everyone? Lets do this little experiment proposed by +Tamara Pruessner to shake up what the algorithm shows us in our streams.

New Day's Hope

I have been doing a lot of thinking about how my main stream no longer shows everyone, or even a few and their newest posts, about how my own posts get increasingly smaller interaction, and how if my posts are doing that, then everyone's are.  I think the algorithm that governs what we see and what others see of our own stuff has gotten too restrictive.  And it frustrates me to no end - especially when I have 100 new posts in my stream and most are either 24 hours old, something I have already seen (and plussed or commented) or both.  Fresh isn't happening anymore and it is FRUSTRATING.

I don't normally notify anyone of my posts but for this, I am (and I am not even sure how many will get the notification - over 3500 in my circles).  What I am proposing is an experiment of sorts.  To all of those that comment on this post, I will go to your stream and plus the heck out of you, comment as much as possible, and over the next week, share a few my favorite posts.  Here is the catch - you have to share this post or something similar, calling your own circles to action.

Let's see if we can shake up the algorithm a bit.  Let's see if we can take back control of our streams LIKE WE SHOULD HAVE.  Let's see if our streams start showing our favorite people again.  A week from now, I will make a new post so I can see if my stream has changed... hopefully, mine will and so will yours.

It's a brand new year and while I'm not much of a resolution kind of guy, I do have one aspiration to reach for. Create More

It's simple and sometimes doing client work lacks any creativity at all and I want to actually create more this year.

On that note, here's a cool shot from a high school wrestling match. The used the Tilt-shift blur tool from the Photoshop blur gallery to enhance the DOF a bit further than the f/2.2 50mm netted. It really helped to separate them from the spectators behind them.

So how's the G+ community doing these days? I haven't been nearly as active this last year because much of my business has been very local and Facebook is much better for that.

It looks like only a fraction of the people I follow are active anymore and I would say the same for those that have circled me. My last post has zero interaction after four hours. Not one +1 from 59K followers. Kind of sad. I used to really like this place.

Got my hands on the Nikkor 200-400 f/4 today. The thing is a beast. It's taking a lot of strength to hand hold this steady enough to get a shot. I'll definitely be using a monopod at the hunt dog test I'm covering tomorrow.

Hahaha, I was looking at someone's portraits taken on a railroad track and my mind instantly started thinking about how train track shots were so cliche and overdone...but then I remember that I committed that sin early on in my career too.

Here's a notable one. You can tell the older one wasn't really into it. Aren't we all guilty of this one?

As my boys grow into their teens, they seem to loose some of their sweetness everyday. When I can get a picture that still has a piece of that, it seems to resonate with me more.

Don't let the time slip by, have photos taken of your kids before their grown and gone!

I got some prints and an album delivered today. Before I delivered them, I wanted to get a few nice pictures of them for the website. So I setup a simple lighting setup in the living room.

Lighting Info: I used a single Einstein softened with a large gridded softbox. I rotated the softbox towards the camera to prevent glare on the shiny surfaces and to feather the light. Notice how the top of the images have a natural gradation from dark to light. That's all in-camera.

Getting as much camera gear strapped to my back so I can ride across Shasta Dam to do a photoshoot. Where we're going, only a bicycle can go, so I've got to pack it.

Also, if you're wondering, I'm not auditioning for the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie!

In the pack is one camera body, two lenses, an Alienbee 800, Vagabond Mini battery pack, a Speedlight with battery pack, a shoot through umbrella, a beauty dish two light stands, some wireless triggers and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting. Nothing but net!

You often think of full sun as the enemy for portraiture. When you're shooting something like team sports, you don't always get to choose the time and location. You have to think on your feet and get great results.

These boys just came off the field on a 108 degree day. I put the sun behind them (providing the rim light) and used a single AB800 with a Beauty dish and sock. I couldn't have done this with a speed light because it didn't have enough power to compete with the sun.

I used a mild BW layer to build up some contrast and I sharpened the image. Otherwise, very little post processing here.

The age ole' debate over whether clients should get digital files or prints after their photo shoots may never get put to rest.

As a small business owner you've got both deliver a product your clients want and all the while it needs to have enough value that those same clients are willing to pay for it.

How do you choose what to offer?

I was strolling through some of my early work this afternoon and found this shot I never processed. With more hot summer days behind us than those in front, I processed this like one of the  summer sunsets we've had recently.

I've got an opportunity for someone who'd be willing to model for me. I need some simple shots for a lighting e-book I'm working on. If you're interested, please message me for details. Someone in the Red Bluff through Redding area please.

This needs more animated GIF

I've never made my own custom animated GIF before. Learned something new in Photoshop.  Who know such wizardry was possible?

These girls were doing a super cute pre-game "Pump it Up!" cheer.

This was just three frames shot by hand, auto-aligned in Photoshop and then animated to a GIF. Google it!

I've been working on re-working my website today. I want to focus on the photography I actually want to do, so I'm trying to put together a new portfolio. Wow this is hard!

Matt is paying homage to gangsta rap. Straight #thuggin #yo

Lighting info: Gridded beauty dish for the main light just above his head. A speed light above and behind aimed at the back of his head focused a narrow 105mm to give a slight rim light.

Today, I wanted to explore some different emotions. Like so many other photographers, I automatically jump to the smile. Why are we afraid to capture other emotions besides happiness?

So you are a photographer and put up a website to make it official. You are open for business. The only problem is your portfolio website probably sucks and you don't even know it.

Today I wanted to talk about three common pitfalls new photographers make when putting their portfolio together. There's no reason your website can't be awesome and attract new clients.

As a photographer, we naturally want to please people with our photographs. For many of us, we can go down the road of people pleasing which is a stifle to our creativity. We'll play things safe and get stagnant because if you're trying to make EVERYONE happy, you'll make yourself miserable catering to every whim and opinion.

Why not forget about all of that, produce what you love and attract people who are like minded?

I tackle this topic in my post today.

Tonight was game four in the Tournament of Champions (TOCs) for the Red Bluff Rebels. While tonight was their last night, I'm still proud of them and the great (and highly underrated) job Neil did growing this season.

I had my camera ready in the dugout as the losing error cost them the game. As you can tell, it hit him hard! :)
