Things I've been thinking about lately:
1: Slack is like email now except more annoying because it's constant and there's no thought put towards sending a message. At least with email there is a thin veneer of decorum and forethought when composing a message.
2: Dependencies that shuffle away functionality into the realm of "magic" are probably inherently bad when there is the possibility of onboarding new folks onto projects.
3: college students who only have classwork to show are in for a rude awakening and will quickly learn that the only jobs that hire devs that don't show some passion for what they do are the jobs that no one that knows better wants to do.

Ok going to sleep.

I started my day angry that Allo has weird sms comparability and ended with the sobering conclusion that it's the only solution that keeps it interoperable with iOS.

Can't send SMS on iOS, so you're forced to rely on an external sms client to handle all that. It's gross, but what other option is there?

If you're a fan of phone number based messaging apps, want a fast and super reliable messaging service that works across Android, iOS, and anything that supports SMS, or want to see what this whole 'Google Assistant' thing is about, I'd give Google Allo a look.

Google seems to be marketing their upcoming event and the Pixel like no other

In the past, Nexus phones received a random blog post or a private press invite, that's it. Google seems to be going all in with the Pixel this time around and that's just awesome.

They're advertising this event all over the place from TV advertisements to web ads to huge billboards. Here's a Pixel / October 4th event advertisement photo from New York City.

I'm excited.

Costs to remove a gallbladder: $92,500 give or take a little. Another reason why universal healthcare is necessary to keep people from ruining their lives.

I'm in a fairly good place, with a fairly high paying job with good health insurance, but I can't imagine the effect something as simple as having a gallbladder taken out has on those with less than optimal life conditions. It's ridiculous.

RIP in pieces.

There are three companies in the country which run almost all of its private prisons: GEO, CCA, and MTC. This is a plot of the stock prices of the two public ones (GEO and CCA) today, after the Department of Justice announced that the Federal government was done with private prisons: the Deputy AG has directed the department to "substantially reduce" or decline to renew expiring contracts with all of them. [1]

It would be hard to find a set of companies that I would be happier to see fail. If you had to come up with an outrageous example of "perverse incentives," private prisons would top the list: these companies' contracts with states and localities specify minimum numbers of people that these governments must imprison, at which point they are handed over to these companies for use as "free" labor. [2]

One of the key motivating factors for this change was good journalism in action: an investigative reporter went undercover as a guard in a private prisons, and the resulting article is incredibly worth reading. If you haven't, check it out: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/06/cca-private-prisons-corrections-corporation-inmates-investigation-bauer

[1] http://www.businessinsider.com/the-department-of-justice-is-ending-the-use-of-private-prisons-2016-8

[2] Many people don't notice the loophole in the 13th Amendment: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." It took about seven years after the Civil War for people to realize the full economic value of this loophole, that you could arrest people on any charge and then use them as slave labor. Elaborate systems of kickbacks to judges and arrest quotas showed up almost immediately, and have been immensely profitable ever since)___RIP in pieces.

The comments on this are pretty spot on re: why military has militarized weapons and police should definitely not. It's all about training and accountability. Key one imo being accountability. When you can hide behind a union and blind public support in a lot of transgressions, people tend to be a little loose with the use of force.

Like that first comment states, _There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people._
