In The New Digital Age we asked a now inactive Navy SEAL, who, incidentally, participated in the Osama bin Laden raid in May 2011, what he anticipated for combat units in the future. First, he told us, he envisioned units equipped with highly sophisticated and secure tablet devices that will allow soldiers to tap into live video feeds from UAVs, download relevant intelligence analysis and maintain situational awareness of friendly troop movements. These devices will have unique live maps loaded with enough data about the surrounding environment—the historical significance of a street or building, the owners of every home, and the interior infrared heat movements captured by drones overhead—to provide soldiers with a much clearer sense of what to target and what to avoid. Really excited that The New Digital Age (newdigitalage.com) is now #7 on the New York Times Bestseller list, up from #8 last week. Please help +Eric Schmidt  and me spread the word. We wrote this book because we were tired of the debates about is technology good or bad, a question which ignores the inevitability of it. Instead, we wanted to look ahead at both the good and the bad that awaits us when 5 billion new people come online.

The perfect example of a collision of many things on the Internet today, all of which we talk about in our book   http://www.newdigitalage.com/

1. 3D printing can in principle be used to build a personal weapon hard to detect
2. Plans are uploaded to the Internet and becomes a big story
3. The government asks the information be removed, but as there is no delete button copies are kept on foreign sites
4. The resultant publicity makes the problem worse.

As 5 billion come online, innovation will increasingly come from the margins, with entrepreneurs and inventors building for different audiences and incredibly specific problems.

Consider 24-year-old Kenyan inventor Anthony Mutua, who has invented a chip that can charge phones with footsteps (a reminder of how problematic the lack of reliable and affordable electricity, and to a lesser extent short battery life, is for many people).

Mutua’s chip is now set to go into mass production. Innovation really can come from the ground up.

How Chinese users get around censorship today, a topic covered in our new book http://www.newdigitalage.com/ .. the key are services that are dual use (ie for business as well as for consumers) as they block the consumer and Tor-type services.

I met Jared Cohen about four years ago in Baghdad as a member of a delegation engaging with Iraqis on whether and how technology could help them rebuild their society. Jared and I weren’t sure what we might encounter or accomplish in a country that had been a conflict zone for six years. The answer stared right back at us: everywhere we looked, we saw mobile devices.

Four years later, we’re about to release The New Digital Age, a book about the future of people, nations and business (available April 23 - you can already pre-order!). My belief is that the future — a world of virtually unlimited internet connectivity, speed and processing power — can be a very bright place. In the next decade, the number of people connected to the internet will rise from 2 billion to 7 billion. What will that mean for the world? What will it mean for the internet? And how will individuals, states andorganiz... more »

Mort is very right here; we need more high skilled immigration into the US and we need to stop kicking people who we train with PhD's and other skills out of the country because of a ridculous, harmful and stupid limit on high skilled immigration in the US.  This is probably the most self defeating of all the bizarre policies of the US government.

"Without the Internet, our children will be blind, as we are." -- from an opposition leader, jailed for 18 months by the Generals

Myanmar (Burma).. a country of two different worlds.  Tourist Burma is a terrific place of Buddhism with a local culture undisturbed in fifty years.  Kingdoms from a thousand years ago built cities of pagodas, monuments and the rural world of the past.  Helpful people, calm and friendly wearing colorful clothes, local and great food, and a sense of uniqueness very hard to find in the world.  A giddy feeling that something is happening in the air, as its all happened in the last year.  That's Tourist Burma.

Country of Myanmar coexists with Tourist Burma but seems radically different when you arrive.  Over the last few decades a strong military has run the country, been isolated for it, and ruthlessly maintained power up to and includingkilli... more »

Yes, the Taj Mahal is really as beautiful as people say it is.

A decade of yearly growth at 5-6-7% solves many problems and India, the worlds most complex democracy, is booming.  The asian model of very crowded cities and a growing middle class brings huge pressure on infrastructure like roads and housing, and of course politics in this part of the world are complex anyway.  Its always been a mystery to me why Indians who are so sophisticated lagged in Internet penetration compared to their peers.  This is about to change.

Perhaps the success of the BPO/Outsourcing model in the last decade confused things.  Foreign companies built private networks to handle the call center load and run business operations while a much more valuable resource, a shared Internet, was not built at the same time.

Todays India is thought to be about 600 mobile phone users, 130m Internetuser... more »

The Raspberry Pi is a magical device; 22 british pounds or under $40 Linux computer with a phenomenal graphics engine.  Programmed in Python or any other modern language, kids everywhere can learn how to program at impossibly young ages(!) and make a world that is colorful, fun and eventually build a new set of companies, software and friends.   Designed in Cambridge UK, and meant for the whole world.  Just plug into your HDMI TV and you are all set !

A Week of Africa

After a week of business meetings in the cities of sub-saharan africa, we can surely say three things are new for the continent:

a) the despotic leadership in Africa from the 1970s and 1980 is in decline, replaced by younger and more democratic leaders
b) a huge youth demographic boom is underway, with a majority of the population of 25, or even under 20
c) mobile phones are everywhere, and the Internet in Africa will be primarily a mobile one

Many of the older problems are still severe, including a lack of electric power, the general trend of rural to urban migration, and pervasive corruption.  Every country we visited had an internal security problem, or a significant border problem, and the elites are sheltered from this pervasive concern behind guarded walls, hotels and restaurants with gates and security checks, and ubiquitous guards.  I tryt... more »

Here is an edited version of my comments when Governor Richardson's delegation returned from Pyongyang:

I wanted to thank Governor Richardson for inviting my crew along on this trip. This was a private visit to North Korea to talk about the free and open Internet. The North Koreans showed up, listened to us and asked us a lot of questions.

Overall, the technology in North Korea is very limited right now.

There is a 3G network that is a joint venture with an Egyptian company called Orascom. It is a 2100 Megahertz SMS-based technology network, that does not, for example, allow users to have a data connection and use smart phones. It would be very easy for them to turn the Internet on for this 3G network. Estimates are that are about a million and a half phones in the DPRK with some growth planned in the near future.

There is a supervised Internet and a Korean... more »
