Brian Matiash1,500,697I recently announced that my brand new +SmugMug portfolio site went live (http://portfolio.brianmatiash.com) and that prints are now available for sale! We had so much fun with the announce that I wanted to continue the good times today. With Valentine's Day in full swing, what better way is there to show yourself how much you love YOU than by winning a 1 YEAR Membership with SmugMug? :) Before we get to the contest details, I want to share a crazy deal that any _new customer_ can take advantage of - SmugMug has been extremely generous and is letting me offer a *25% discount* off of *any* of their four tiered membership packages. To get in on this deal, just use the coupon code *BMASH* when you set up your new account. That is a ridiculously good deal and like all good deals, it expires on _Feb 23, 2013 at the stroke of 11:59PM Pacific/US._ Now onto the contest details - which are very straightforward. I want to you to share your *one, single* image that you think would benefit most from having its own SmugMug Gallery. Just share your image right here in this event and tag it with #SmugMash . *Now, creativity and strength of vision count here!* If you want to share a little ditty about what makes this image so important to you and why you'd want to share it on your own SmugMug gallery, be sure to include that. The contest will run for one week, ending next *Thursday, February 21st at 11:59AM Pacific/US time*. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. The first place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Business* membership. The second place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Portfolio* membership. Finally, the third place winner will receive a complimentary 1 year SmugMug *Power* membership. If you're already an existing SmugMug member (good for you!) and you win, you will be upgraded to the respective tier that you placed in or if you placed in the tier that you are currently a member of, SmugMug will extend your account by 1 year. Please tag your comments and/or posts with #SmugMash  to make aggregating the entries easier! So who will be judging this contest? Aside from me, I am so excited to have three amazing SmugMug friends helping out. First, we have _the_ go-to person for all of SmugMug's friends, the lovely and insanely sweet +Katherine Cheng. Next up is SmugMug's social butterfly, loyal father of Rocky the Dog, and the harvester of  #Bonocorns far and wide, +Michael Bonocore. Finally, the co-founder of SmugMug, crazy lover of hanging gigantic prints of jaw-dropping images, and the generally huggable +Chris MacAskill.  One more thing - if you're a new customer who takes advantage of the 25% discount code ( *BMASH* ) today AND ends up winning one of the prizes, SmugMug will automatically tack on another year to your new account. Pretty, pretty, pretty sweet if you ask me. So that's that. I hope you all have fun with this contest. We can't wait to see the amazing work that you guys 'n gals posWin some LOVE! Well… some SmugMug LOVE!2013-02-15 00:00:00131

This is my most popular photo here on Google+. I haven't quite figured out what makes it get an average of 113k views a day. I am up to over 65 million views for this image. Yes, it is a good image, but it is somewhere with a lot of eyeballs! Any ideas?

Love what +Seán Duggan wrote. It was a good conversation. One we need to have more often.

None of us live forever, and this week on TheFIX on +This Week in Photo (TWiP), I'm joined by +Erika Thornes to discuss what happens to your treasured digital family photos after you're gone. Our conversation includes some simple workflow steps you can take to ensure that your important family photos can be easily accessed by your family in both digital and print form, even though you are no longer around. Erika has put a lot of thought into this question after a close friend of hers passed away and she was asked by the family to help sort out her friend's 250,000 image Lightroom catalog and separate the most important family images so they could be dealt with more easily from a non-photographer perspective (i.e., accessed by people who don't know  #Lightroom , and have no idea what a raw file is, but just want to be able to see and share the images as simply as possible).  Erika's tips and suggestions can provide a framework for creating some simple solutions that are easy to implement in your own imaging workflow.___Love what +Seán Duggan wrote. Today, I was going through portraits I shot underwater using different lighting techniques, and I came across this one. I totally forgot about it, as I don't have it in the files or galleries I see very often. So exciting to see images I haven't looked at in two years. What a fun hidden gem! using Joel Olives textures.http://www.joelolives.com/

So, this past week I went to Photoshop World in Vegas, hosted by +KelbyTraining.com. I got to meet the +Photofocus®  team, and I invited one of their authors, Lisa, into the pool at Mandalay Bay Hotel. The wave pool was far better than I could have ever imagined to shoot in. Truly incredible. I can't wait to dig through the photos and find even more fun images. I thought I'd share this one in the meantime. So beautiful, and so much fun.

Blue

The other day, I posted this image here on Google+. Today, while playing around, I accidentally deleted it. Opps. We all make mistakes. But.... I love it. I really love it, and I wanted to make sure to share it with you again. So, please forgive my double post. shot it with my Sony a6000 with an underwater case out here in Del Mar, CA. It was about 30 minutes until sunset, to the light was a little low, enough to give a depth to the water color, without being too dark. This was the color I saw when I was out there. It was an amazing night. It makes me want to get out IN the water more, instead of staying on the shore. For some reason, the image gives them anxiety. Worried about what is beneath. For me, it brings a sense of calmness. Almost meditative. A perfect place for me to relax and reflect... Then there is that bubble. Oh, I want to pop that bubble.

Sometimes, I arrange photo sessions with people I know well. With family friends. When that happens, I get the opportunity to have one of my children come and assist on the shoot. Izzy asked to come along, as she loves the family I took photos of, and was excited to meet them at the beach. She asked if she could bring her hula hoop. Of course. Yes, of course, she could. I got a few photos of her playing with the hoop in the sand that were adorable before we started, and she asked me to shoot her hooping after our session was over. She was a great help getting the baby, to pay attention, and I'm so glad to have been able to spend the time with her. Of course, this image, wasn't too bad either. It is just great to get out and spend time on the beach with our families. They seem to come alive when we are at the beach.

Back to Shooting...

It feels like it has been a while since I've been doing what I love. I have been growing my Canon lens collection for quite some time, and I'm afraid, that instead of enhancing my creativity, it has been holding it back, too much weight, too big, so I would just leave it at home.

Yesterday, I got myself a new camera for me to take with me. Something smaller than my big beast, something I could stick in my purse, and have fun with. I went down to the beach last night with my new Sony a6000, and had a bit of fun playing with long exposure. I loved the glistening of the rocks, but knew they needed more. Tonality Pro was great in bringing out the details in the rocks.

I'm so happy to have the #sony     #sonyalpha   #a6000  It really is a great refreshing change for me. #sandiego    #sunest   #ndfilter   #blog   #macphun  #tonalityP... more »

Wow. +Derek Kind this is incredibly awesome and inspiring!

THE SIGN UP for the next
+Chrysta Rae Photography Scavenger Hunt will be held on
SATURDAY, MARCH 14th AT 12 NOON Mountain time zone.

Be online, and watching my stream at that time,
when the sign up post comes,
be one of 500 people to say "I'm In"
and you will be entered into the 15TH Round of the Hunt.

IF the time zones have this in the middle of your night, or IF you have plans and cannot be online at this particular time, FIND A PROXY to sign you in.

Please note - I will only take ONE "I'M IN" per post. The only way for me to control the 500 entries is by the comments themselves. When it hits 500, the post closes. I will ONLY take 500 people. IF you are doing a proxy for someone, enter yourself in first, then enter in the person you are helping out on a separate comment. Proxies say "+__ is IN" - again on a separate post from the one you did to enter yourself.

The Photography Scavenger Hunt is a FUN, community-based event open to ANYONE who loves photography.
ANY level of skill is welcomed!!
You will learn a ton of new things while entered in the round, you will make new friends, you will have a ton of fun and you might try some new things you wouldn't normally be inclined to do.
There is zero reason to hesitate!!!

MAKE SURE TO BE ONLINE, ON TIME.
The 500 spots have gone in under an hour for previous rounds.

(PS - photo by +Derek Kind who light painted this backwards at 4 a.m.!)___Wow. +Derek Kind this is incredibly awesome and inspiring!

ADVENTURE IN THE WOODS

I've been able to borrow the Canon 200mm F/2.0 lens from Canon this past weekend. Oh my is it a dreamy lens. It is so sharp and clear. It is big, heavy, and expensive, but I was able to use it hand held without any problems. I'm utterly impressed with the quality of the images from it. It opens up a new way of shooting for me, as I'm normally a fan of wide angle lenses. But, with this lens, I've discovered an almost magical viewpoint on the world. The Canon CPS program is fantastic, and I'm thankful they have this loaner program. I don't want to send it back!!!

So, I have a local photography group that is pretty amazing, and sets up some incredible things for us. +Joshua Mitchell in conjunction with +WPPI Rangefinder   organized models to come out, and got everything in place for us to get a glimpse of what shooting pro models was like. I have to say, I was utterly impressed. I can't wait to see images from the event. The ones from the past impress the socks off me.

A BLANKET TO SHARE

Day 16, A Portrait a Day, Today, while out shooting a family shoot, I received a loaner lens from Canon. The Canon 200mm F/2.0. Oh boy. It is a BIG lens. Heavy. I convinced the girls to come scout a location with me right before dusk. I drove by it last Friday, and have been dying to shoot there since. I can think of so many wonderful things to shoot in this spot. I can't wait to get out there with my kids in costume. It would be a blast. It is a good portrait day when I can get a great image of all my girls together. The blanket was made by my Grandma with my Aunt's old dresses. The basket is a gift from Iris, and the stuffed animal is one we got on our summer adventure. Glad my girls still want to cuddle together, and have me take their photo. What a blessing! #blog

LIGHTHOUSE HUGS

Really working on shooting a new portrait each day in 2015. Today, we went to the Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego. The kids asked for a photo at the base of the stairs. I can't deny them that... It was fun seeing the lighthouse staged as it would have been 100 years go. But, even more fun were the tide pools below the lighthouse. We'll be sure to go again. Edited with +Macphun Software Tonality Pro. #blog

I'm Being a Brat...

Well, not really... I thought I'd share a photo that made me laugh, and let you know that  below I'm posting a link to a totally great sale on Macphun editing software, with some awesome attached incentives (Free Smugmug, free Creative Live, Free Magazines), It is an affiliate link,  hence the brat face.

Regardless, laugh at the photo, tease me in the comments. But know the software is as good as I am silly. I edited in LR, for simple corrections and then brought it into Intensify Pro and used two of their presets,  Focus Preset and Even Balance Detail enhancement. I'm having a lot of fun with it, as it pushes my images in ways that LR can't.

I really wish I had some reindeer antlers on her. Then she could be "Olive, the other reindeer" because  she used to laugh call him names... Ha. Yeah. I might need betterjoke... more »

I was telling +Laurie Rubin and +Kevin La Rue all about how wonderful +Tanya Rochat's work was today, and I wanted to share with all of you some of her amazing images. They are 100% digitally manipulated PHOTOGRAPHS. Yes. Layers and layers and layers of adjustments of PHOTOS. Simply stunning. Tanya, you are in inspiration.

My first Matte Painting inspired by some of the examples I saw during my studies to help me get the technique under control.

I had numerous requests to explain how I have done it and have a pdf that I would love to share with you

This is a quick overview: This is my first matte painting. I studied matte paintings and got inspired by some of my tutorials which guided me to create this as a test run. I created concept art to help me with the element selection. Then I started to look around for the elements to use in the matte painting. Whenever I found something I felt was a potential fit I would photograph it or search for a photo in my (constantly expanding) photography library. Sometimes it would take weeks before I managed to collect all the required elements. Once I had all the elements together it could take another 160+ hours to put it all together. I used Photoshop and also have a Wacom Cintiq which makes the concept art much easier. (Yes I know I could create some elements in software like Maya, Cinema4D, DAZ etc but I wanted to make sure it is all photographic content)

I was going through images tonight and came across this one I edited over a year ago. I shot it at 1.8 on my 85mm lens. It had so much chromatic aberration that it took me forever to remove it properly, as it was so close in color to the other colors she was wearing, and nothing automatic would work. I cursed that lens after this shoot, and never used it again. (even though I was the one who shot it backlit and wide open). Tonight, I discovered the defringe brush in lightroom. Yes, I had seen it, but it didn't occur to me that it would have been wonderful to spot correct using that tool instead of layers of selective color adjustments masked in... It has been fun looking through old images. It makes me want to get out and create even more!

My Tamron 28-75... My most used lens

(There are 19 images in this gallery, and they are all different, I think you'll like the variety, so I encourage you to click on the link, and see more than the preview few).

I was talking with a friend on Friday about Tamron lenses. They had just come to San Diego on a tour. I didn't hear about the tour until they already passed through, but I was remarking how much I loved the Tamron lens I own and she told me how excited she was about Tamron.

Some of my favorite images were taken with my Tamron SP 28-75 F/2.8 Di lens on my Canon camera, and our conversation prompted me to dig through my catalog of images and hunt out my favorite photos to share with her. It is such a great lens to just always keep on my camera. It is lightweight, has amazing versatility, and can shoot well in low light. I've done fun shoots with it, I've used it with clients, and it has been the default lens I leave on my camera when I don't know which lens I'll want to use. I have even won a few awards using this lens (I forgot that, until I went back and started digging through my images!). I found over 23,000 images in my catalog where I chose my Tamron. My Tamron out paces even my Canon L glass in the sheer amount of images I have shot with it. It is such a special lens to me, that even while getting, and now selling the Canon 24-70, my Tamron 28-75 stays with me, as it is sharp, light, and easy to use. Funny how you get attached to a lens, but I really am attached to it. I thought I'd share the images I pulled out to show my friend with you all. I still think that it is quite a remarkable little lens, even after owning it now for about 4 years.  ___

I'm on Day 4 of my 5 day black and white challenge. This photo just intrigues me. It might be just me, but that is okay. He is mostly skin and bones, but she loves this cat. and he was remarkable to see. My cousin Laura was with me when she was talking and talking about this cat.
So... Laura... I'm challenging you. I'm challenging you to post 1 black and white photo a day for 5 days. You're welcome to pull them out of some of your old favorite shots, or to shoot a new one to post,or to... more »

He is mostly skin and bones, but she loves this cat. and he was remarkable to see. My cousin Laura was with me when she was talking and talking about this cat.
So... Laura... I'm challenging you. I'm challenging you to post 1 black and white photo a day for 5 days. You're welcome to pull them out of some of your old favorite shots, or to shoot a new one to post, or to convert a color that you think would look nice in black and white.
Thank you +Laurie Rubin   for asking me to participate in this challenge. It is rewarding.___

Day 3
My sister in law, +Sarah Thornes  went spelunking with me and my youngest daughter Emery last summer. My 5 year old climbed crazy things, she was passed over 40 deep foot crevasses, and she giggled with glee as we slid down an ice slide. We had to climb up over 150 feet over giant boulders to get out. I stayed at the bottom while I watched everyone climb up. My 5 year old was already out, and Sarah was carrying her bag and walking towards her. It was a great experience. One I'll never forget. Thank you McCloud Outdoor Gear Exchange for the great trip.
As my friend +Jan Kabili  was telling me yesterday, high contrast images can be tough to process in black and white. This one was especially challenging, but I wanted to try. It took me over 20 minutes to get it exactly how i liked it.
Today, I nominate +Cindy Meyers  Yes, you'venever do... more »

Great-Great Grandparents Barn
Day 2 Black and white Challenge.... +Laurie Rubin  tagged me to post a black and white photo each day for 5 days. It is harder than I thought it would be. Color adds so much to my images, that finding ones that work BETTER in black and white vs. Color is the challenge. Shooting in or for black and white is a totally different than shooting color. I think Laurie is pushing me to a new level. I'm thinking of doing a personal shooting FOR black and white only for a while, even changing my JPG preview to black and white.
Thanks for the push Laurie. I needed it.
This photo was taken on our epic 2 month road trip. In Wisconsin. At the farm where my Grandmother grew up.
Today, I nominate, one of my dear friends, +Cora Reuter. We were lunch hall buddies back in High School. Why would we eat in the cafeteria when we could hang out in the hall in front of the... more »

Today, I nominate, one of my dear friends, +Cora Reuter. We were lunch hall buddies back in High School. Why would we eat in the cafeteria when we could hang out in the hall in front of the band and art classrooms... We talked, we played, we had fun... then we went to college together. We painted together for hours... (She's a better painter than I am). Over the years, my fondness for her has grown. I can only imagine the trouble we'd get into if we spent more than a day or two a year together. Cora. You can do it. One a day, for 5 days, BLACK AND WHITE BABY!

Waiting For a Meal
Day 1: Almost two months ago, +Laurie Rubin invited me to the zoo. I had not been in a long time, and I had never been with a great long lens. It sure was fun and different from my normal shooting. The sun was bright, and it was hot, but all and all I had a great time. It was wonderful to get out and I'm happy to share some images I captured then...

I was nominated by +Laurie Rubin  to take on the #fivedayblackandwhitechallenge   ‪ in which I get to post a Black and White image for 5 days, and then nominate someone else to do the same each day. Oh boy.... I can do it... :)
Today I nominate my good friend Shelly Shuey to post a black and white each day....

Went on a +Scott Kelby world wide photo walk today hosted by +Laurie Rubin  at the San Diego Zoo today. I took a lot of photos. My kids took a lot of photos, but this one was my favorite. My daughter climbed under an elephant statue and well..... You can see what happened. ‪#‎WWPW2014‬ #blog

Growing corn for the first time. It is amazing to see it grow from less than 6 inches to 6 feet in just a few weeks time. Looking forward to harvest.
