Let me begin by apologizing; I really don't want to start yet another OS war thread — there will plenty of those for us to suffer through for the next few days — but, frankly, I need to vent. I don't understand Apple's new design direction with iOS. I literally can not wrap my head around how they felt what was shown today was ready for public consumption.
This is the exact same UI that was leaked in the media weeks ago and everyone laughed at as a fake — iOS fans (like myself) included — because nobody believed Apple would ever deliver something so... frankly, amateur looking.
What happened to Apple's software design philosophy and vision? It feels like it's been slipping away ever since Lion. I realize competition in the smart phone arena is fierce right now, and Apple is getting a lot of pushback from innovation in the Android space right now, and they couldn&... more »

Introducing Google Keyboard – smart and easy typing on Android
Starting today, you can get the smart-and-easy Nexus typing experience on your Android phone or tablet, by downloading Google Keyboard on Google Play: http://goo.gl/W63Lu
Google Keyboard has Gesture Typing (which lets you glide through letters to form a word, just lift your finger to enter a space), automatic error correction, and word predictions. You can also tap the microphone to compose messages with Voice Typing when you’re on-the-go. Together with dictionaries for 26 languages (plus keyboard layouts for a dozen more), it provides a fast, accurate, and reliable typing experience.
Android is an open platform, so you can customize your device to your liking; choosing your own keyboard is just one example of what’s possible – and there are a lot of great keyboards to choose from on Google Play. (... more »

Pure is a new CSS library from Yahoo. Unlike Bootstrap, it's quite small (just over 5K minified/compressed). Bootstrap 3 is more mobile-targeted, though, so I will be curious to see how it compares.

New trailer for Bungie's "Destiny." I applaud their use of Giancarlo Esposito, I can't get enough of that guy, but I found the trailer a bit uninspired. I'm psyched to see what the game play looks like at E3, though.

New Nexus 7 rumor puts revamped Nexus 7 coming in July
We haven't had a Nexus 7 refresh rumor in a while. The latest one comes from Digitimes, whom has a track record for hit or miss when it comes to reporting tech news. However, they were correct this time last year, when they reported on the original Nexus 7.
Elan Microelectronics, a Taiwanese supplier of integrated circuitry for touchscreen devices, is reported to have already begun shipping touchscreen controllers for the next generation of the Nexus 7.
Thanks to the order for Nexus 7 controllers, Elan is said to boast increased revenues in May and June. This tells us that the device itself is being manufactured in June, which goes nicely with the earlier reports about the release of the Nexus 7 in July.

Excellent new feature from the Mozilla crew, "Health Reports."
It takes a pulse of your Firefox installation's overall performance and stability over time, and suggests ways you can improve your experience (by removing unstable addons, tweaking settings, and so forth.)
It also collects this information (anonymously) and pools it with other Firefox users so Mozilla can produce up to date metrics on how Firefox is performing globally.

You told us what you would do #ifihadglass, now’s your chance to show us
Our Explorer Program started last year at our I/O conference when developers signed up to be the first people to try Glass. Last Tuesday, we finished inviting these developers to officially join the Explorer Program and we’re already seeing amazing things come from them. They've really embraced the Explorer spirit — the spirit of someone who’s ready to jump in, get their hands dirty and take on a challenge.
In February, we opened up the Explorer Program by asking people across Google+ and Twitter what they would do if they had Glass. We were looking for bold, creative individuals to become our next wave of Explorers — and wow, did we get them. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be slowly rolling out invitations to successful #ifihadglass applicants. If you were one of the successful applicants, p... more »

The newly redesigned Apple Store (https://store.apple.com/) uses SASS. They make a few minor faux pas in their implementation, but I'm just glad to see SASS continuing to gain broader adoption. It's an amazing tool.

Pretty disappointed by the Xbox One reveal today. Some neat tech to be sure, but I'm not really interested in yet another set top box for my living room — I was excited about new breakthroughs in gaming, and I didn't come away from the event seeing much to be excited about there. I hope they'll have more exciting things to show at E3.
Most of what was revealed today felt like a too many chefs in the kitchen situation, and gaming was pushed largely to the sideline. And what's the deal with no backwards compatibility support for 360? That feels like a huge Achilles' heel to this whole thing.
Alas, I think I'll be going forward with my plan to build a custom Steambox/HTPC.

If you dig the Google Now scenery from the Search app then you might give GoogleNowWallpaper HD app a try.
It updates your phone's wallpaper throughout the day with time-appropriate versions of Now scenes. You can pick from all of the location themed scenes (SF, NYC, Seattle, Chicago, and so on) or the default mountain view. Best of all, it's not a Live Wallpaper, so there's no nasty battery drain.
I do wish there was a shuffle mode to randomize what scene I was shown, just to add some spice to life. It also doesn't scale very well for tablets, but that's seems to be a limitation of the scene resolutions available rather than a problem with the app.

I've been looking for a decent Forecast.io (Dark Skies) based weather app for Android for awhile, and I think Arcus Weather might just do the trick. It's lightweight, has an attractive UI, and integrates well. It comes with a DashClock extension too, which is super handy.

Chrome Packaged Apps can now decide in Google Chrome Canary which files they can handle by specifying the file extensions on top of the mime types.
Cool thing is that you can specify "*" to be able to open any file with your App. It can be very useful for a binary file analyzer like HexReader for instance. See

I'm incredibly excited - our first Kickstarter is live! BRCK is an insanely cool device that the Ushahidi team has been working on for quite a while, and it's finally ready for primetime. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1776324009/brck-your-backup-generator-for-the-internet We call it a backup generator for the Internet, and it really is. You should go watch the video and read up, but here's the skinny:
* It's a stand alone WiFi hotspot that can keep your computers and devices seamlessly connected to available WiFi, ethernet, 3G or 4G network connections; BRCK will maintain your WiFi connection, and in the backend intelligently switch to the best available data pipe. The point of BRCK is to keep you online anywhere, all the time, without a fuss.
* It's battery powered and rugged so you can take it anywhere. In your backpack, at the coffee shop, on the road or in the... more »

Just wrapped up a great Google+ Hangout with +Brian Herbert, +Heather Leson and +Rob Baker (and dog) in which we talked about today's +Crowdmap beta launch — what's new, why we're going the direction we are, and what you can expect down the road. We also answered viewer questions and shared a few easter eggs. (Brian's "burrito dance" is not to be missed, I assure you.)

I wrote about today's public beta launch of +Crowdmap over on Medium. Here's the repeat. :)
Last year +Brian Herbert, +Brandon Rosage and I met up in California and on a whim asked ourselves: ignoring what we know Crowdmap to be today, what would our ideal crowdsourced mapping service look like? As it turns out, we’d all already been considering this question for a while in our own heads, and our conclusions were strikingly similar.
1. It would put a strong emphasis on users and their content. That content would be presented in a big, beautiful fashion and delivered front and center to visitors — people want to know what’s going on as it happens.
2. Users would be able to post about anything at anytime from anywhere. A map shouldn’t have to already exist, and users shouldn’t have to hunt one down, before sharing something they care about.
3. It would make ... more »
