ePublish Unum - Education for Authors152,710Last weekend Evo and Jeff emceed and presented at an indie author conference in Phoenix. Nearly a hundred authors and authors-in-training gathered to learn tips and tricks on everything from social media promotion to legally protecting your work. In turn, we learned what people were focusing on, were worried about, and were excited over.  On the next epsiode of The Books & Beer Hangout, we'll look at what we learned from attending an indie author conference, and what it might imply for the state of the indie author world. _The Books & Beer Hangout_ is a weekly video chat on topic related to something in or around the world of digital publishing … with beer! ePublish Unum - Education for Authors152,710The world of fiction and non-fiction books may not seem that different to readers, but there are good reasons few authors excel in both categories. But does that really need to be the case? Recently Jeff Moriarty made the switch from fiction to non-fiction author, and hit more than a few potholes along the way. If you've thought about checking out the grass on the other side of the fence, he has some survival tactics that could save you some of his headaches. On the next episode of The Books & Beer Hangout, we'll look at survival tips for fiction authors looking to enter the world of non-fiction. If you’ve made the switch yourself, join us and share your own ideas. _The Books & Beer Hangout_ is a weekly video chat on topic related to something in or around the world of digital publishing … with beer! Evo Terra1,571,562*Save the Date: No Pants Light Rail Ride 2014* Last year 350 people took to the Light Rail in Phoenix and took off their pants – and we’re doing it again! The 6th Annual No Pants Light Rail Ride is coming up on Sunday, January 12th at 1pm. This is part of the Global No Pants Subway Ride started by Improv Everywhere in 2002. What started as 7 people doing a prank on the New York subway has expanded into an international event involving tens of thousands of people in dozens of cities all over the world. The rules of the event are pretty simple – show up at the designated place and time with your light rail pass, take off your pants, get on the light rail, and act like nothing strange is going on. You have no idea why other people around you aren’t wearing pants. If you have trouble keeping a straight face, you may want to bring your earbuds and listen to your music. Warm or cold, rain or shine we’re doing this. As the date gets closer, we’ll bring you in the loop about where the starting points will be and where the group is meeting up. We had an awesome time last year riding the rail sans pants and meeting up at Angel’s Trumpet Ale House. Check out the photos and video from last year’s event to see for yourself.Phoenix No Pants Light Rail Ride 20142014-01-12 21:00:008
ePublish Unum - Education for Authors152,710For many of us, indie or self-publishing follows the same flow as traditional publishing, but we're in charge. OK... but what if that's not the optimal way? What if we need to completely rethink the entire process? I'm not talking about cutting corners, but I am talking about a new concept called _lean publishing_? On the next episode of The Books & Beer Hangout, we'll cover this new process at a high level and give you our take on the process. Is it for you? Heck, is it for us? That's what we'll find out. _The Books & Beer Hangout_ is a weekly video chat on topic related to something in or around the world of digital publishing … with beer! ePublish Unum - Education for Authors152,710In a recent survey of would-be authors, it was found that most are unaware of the difference in royalty payments between indie publishing and a traditional deal. Almost all are under the illusion that traditional publishers will take care of marketing for them, and more than two-thirds are convinced they are unable to make a quality book without a traditional publisher. Of course, _you_ don't think that. You know the score. But knowing what others are wrong about can help you better position yourself and take advantage of the less-educated masses. On this episode of _The Books & Beer Hangout_, we'll dissect the survey a little more, have a good laugh, and hopefully point you in the right direction. _The Books & Beer Hangout_ is a weekly video chat on topic related to something in or around the world of digital publishing … with beer! Evo Terra1,571,562*How to stop doing things | Show Up Sundays* If you've noticed, my Google+ profiles shows me working at _helping people figure out what not to do_. Sure, that's a little flippant, but it's also fairly accurate. I've done a lot of dumb things the hard and wrong way in my time. Evo Terra1,571,562*Re-state your assumptions.* Assumptions are rather like dust-bunnies. They build up and take on a quasi-sentient nature if you let them. Kevin Lanni1*Seating is limited* Go to the official page to RSVP! From the official site: Carl Sagan once said that there are four large bodies other than the Sun in our solar system, and the rest are debris. But these debris, small as they are, are themselves vast worlds with secrets waiting to be discovered. In the last decade, NASA has sent an unprecedented number of missions into space to explore the mysteries of these debris – specifically Mars, our Moon, and asteroids. The Planetary Society is proud to invite you to an evening with scientists working on the Mars Curiosity and Opportunity missions, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Odyssey, and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. This is a casual event and suitable for the entire family. Grab a snack and a drink and learn about the latest scientific results and stunning images returned from our missions of exploration. Questions and discussion are encouraged. A representative of the Planetary Society, Casey Dreier, will also be in attendance with the Society's own touchable Mars meteorite. The event is located on the third piece of debris from the sun, at Spokes on Southern, an alehouse in Tempe, AZ. Parking is free. We will start gathering around 7pm. There will be free chips, salsa, guacamole and happy-hour prices on drinks and food throughout the duration of the event. Speakers start around 7:30pm. *The event is free and open to all* so bring a friend and get a unique perspective on NASA's exploration of the solar system. *Guests* Dr. Jim Bell (ASU) Jim is an active planetary scientist and has been heavily involved in many NASA robotic space exploration missions, including Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR), the Mars Exploration Rovers, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the MSL Curiosity rover mission. He is also the author of multiple books, his most recent being "The Space Book: From the Beginning to the End of Time, 250 Milestones in the History of Space and Astronomy," and is available to sign any you bring. Fraser Cain985,572Join us every Sunday night for another @100902337165997768522, where we stream the view from several telescopes into a live Google+ Hangout on Air. We'll stream whatever's in the sky right now. We'll answer questions, take requests, and generally geek out about astronomy. What's on the agenda this week?  - The @101461771579697778955 is perfect so we'll probably have several views of it - The planets are too low on the horizon, so no luck there - somebody might be able to get @106397393735580644683, though. - The summer constellations are fading, and now the fall constellations are coming up. We should be able to see both, including the Eagle Nebula, Swan Nebula, Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, Ring Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, and more. - If we're lucky, we'll also get a view from the other side of the planet, showcasing a live view of the @116479286515493152582 and its current sunspots. (the image for this week's Event is the Eagle Nebula, captured by @107852824321756704184, and a good example of the kind of stuff we'll see) You don't need any special technology to enjoy our star parties. Just join this event, and then you'll get a notification when we go live. Then you'll be able to ask us questions, request objects, and generally learn about astronomy and astrophotography as a hobby. See you on Sunday!Virtual Star Party - August 26, 20122012-08-27 05:30:00119

Following up my first successful (hey, it served the purpose I wanted) Collection on a less-well-known place in China, I'm cultivating a new Collection of the tiny town of Le Haut-Corlay in the Brittany area of France. And unless you're from there, you've probably never heard of it.

https://plus.google.com/b/106620677626010575042/collection/kG06kB

As mentioned in the first paragraph, I've something specific I'm trying to do with these collection. They're a sort of bridge (?) between disparate social properties, a bit of an archive, and of course a showcase of the best photos we took on our travels. But there also a new way to tell stories in interesting new ways.

Comments welcome!

While the science is far from settled, it's looking like researchers have found a way to make metallic hydrogen.

Why is that a big deal? Metastability. That means it should retain it's properties (e.g. superconductivity and remaining a metal) at room temperature. Which means we re-wire... everything.

Why Nationalism sucks for space travel.

There's plenty of uproar over recent #travelban executive orders that make traveling to the US difficult for some. At the same time across the pond, the UK's march toward the publicly mandated #brexit may make it harder to get to... outer space?

[sigh]

This is why we can't have a nice future.

I'm in Finland to keynote #NBEFinland and #Matka2017, a travel conference. I was on my own for most of the first day, so I did a little self-guided tour around the harbor area. Below are the pics from my phone. Provided without context, because that's actually funnier in this case.

Help me find the right CMS.

Hive mind! Help me find this service I'm sure already exists:

1. Provides a "content vault" for building a library of hundreds of audio/video files
2. Easy management of that vault, compete with basic descriptive info/meta data
3. Drag-and-drop of some vault content to playlists/pages that are hidden/private/paywalled

All done on a web/mobile interface. Current LMS options are close, but too education-focused. I want to build shelves of content and give certain people/companies access to that specific shelf.

What's out there that's close? I could kludge together private YT playlists or use premium casting via Libsyn, but I'm hoping for something a little more brand-able for my client.

I totally feel like a double-naught spy.

Prepping for our first trip back to the soon-to-be-made-great-again US of A, so I fished out my American money out of my pile...

I'm not sure where we got the Mexican pesos. Ringgits, HKDs, Yuen, and Dong (so much Dong!) make sense. There's roughly $35 USD worth of those. But a peso is worth $.50, so I thought I had a couple hundred bucks. But then I realized those are pre-devaluation notes, and each are worth 2 pesos now. Godsdammit.

Featured Collections of our travels continue to grow! I've just share the initial five shots from the six weeks we spent in Northern England last year and will be adding new shots daily.

Expect fog, drizzle, rain, clouds, and other generally damp photography, because that's England in late winter/early spring. As we learned!

Farcical tale of Copenhagen travels has begun!

We spent three weeks in Copenhagen in the dead of winter last year. That made for a funny story for us two desert rats, hopefully of which I've captured in the 20 images I've chosen for this new Collection.

The first five up are up, with new ones added daily. And I took +Nina Trankova's advice of adding a short pinned post at the top of this (and every other) collection. Great suggestion!

Google News flushing of bad content winding up all in my feed?

We need to talk, Google News. I know it's been a couple days since I pulled you up, but it seems a pretty short time for you to completely lose your mind. And I know there's a lot of craziness in the world right now (spoiler: there always is), but you don't need to add to it.

Maybe this is just five flips of a bad penny in a row, but I can't imagine why you'd think I would give two shits about a TV comedy host's childhood, an obvious click-bait article from a site I can't even access in Thailand, or two pieces of fake or exaggerated news about two figures I do have a legitimate interest in.

Seriously. Stop it.

Wedding 2.0 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

For our 25th wedding anniversary, my wife and I renewed our vows in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We she took a sugar boat-load of photos, and I'm sharing the best of those in this new Collection.

I'll add new photos daily for a bit (thanks for the tip, +Rupert Wood) until I've cover all the good stuff. Oh, and I'll be adding snarky comments along the way, as is my wont.

Tall Tales Made The Man

Curious what makes a storyteller and showman? A larger-than-life role model who didn't let anything get in the way of making a good story great.

I'll miss you forever, Gramps.

Though it's plenty warm in Bangkok, I've started sharing a Collection of the best photos we took (mostly Sheila) while we were in Le Haut-Corday in the Brittany area of NE France. All the shots are from January, 2015. Comments and shares welcome, but please follow the Collection to get future additions, as I'm not sharing every photo on my feed!

I'm finally taking the advice of +Shane Dallas and using Google+ Collections to showcase some of the travel photography we've collected over the years as +The Opportunistic Travelers.

I started with https://plus.google.com/collection/ITLunB and have a few more shots to add before it's "complete". Well... until I find more great shots my lovely wife took while we were in Chengdu, China. Our first time to the mainland!

(Next up, winter shots from the tiny town of Le Haut-Corlay in the Brittany region of France. But I'll share that Collection at another time.)

When I talk about crazy things like space tourism becoming a reality in my life time, I get about an equal mix of both head nodding and shaking. But most just look at me with that puzzled RCA dog look.

So when I tell you that the fashion and cosmetics industry are preparing -- seriously preparing -- for products that make us look good when we're weightless, it's OK that it strains your brain a little.

(Note to self: Will the current weight loss industry be able to change brands to "mass loss"? I need +Terry Simpson to weigh in ((ha!)) on that one.)

Yesterday, my world lost the greatest storyteller it had ever known. My grandfather, Vic Rodkey, spent his last moments in the woods on a beautiful autumn day. Binoculars around his neck, bag of feed in hand, and for some reason a 12'' hunting knife sheathed on his belt. Hey, there could have been an undiscovered pack of wolves nearby. Or a bear. I'm pretty sure he told me about seeing bear scat in the area recently.

My grandfather survived polio. He built warships and served his country with honor in WWII. He built damns and relocated entire populations of prairie dogs to save them from the rising waters. He was a boxer. A turkey-herder. An educator. And so much more.

He was and remains my hero. My inspiration. He taught me that even a guy with an 8th-grade education can be the smartest person in the room. That a stubborn "screw you, I'll do it" attitude is... more »

He was and remains my hero. My inspiration. He taught me that even a guy with an 8th-grade education can be the smartest person in the room. That a stubborn "screw you, I'll do it" attitude is often the first path through or around obstacles. He taught me to question divine truths, and that history is more about storytelling than relaying what actually happened. If my grandfather had one credo, it's that a good story made great with embellishment is way better than the cold, hard truth. If he had two, the other was owah tagu siam.

So the next time I take 5 minutes to tell an anti-joke, you'll know from where I draw my strength to go on that long. And you'll laugh, dammit.

(Picture not included because no image can fully represent a man this large. Though he would have loved the idolatry.)___

Unfortunate sign placement that 1/2 the electorate can get behind.

It's early in Bangkok, but I'm out with a bunch of pinko commies to watch the results. (They'll be less likely to turn to torches if things don't go there way.)

Populist drivel from lack of abundancy v. scarcity knowledge.

I'm getting used to short-sighted thinkers and their knee-jerk reactions every time a long-term thinker says something.

But seriously, people. It's not Elon's job to figure out the socioeconomic impact of the future that is coming. When you ask him about about "the feels", you're not getting a well-crafted and researched answer. So don't be surprised if it sounds a little calloused. If that's how you're reading it you probably missed the point all together.

It also features one of my favorite people in the world, my buddy George Hrab. The boy has mad skills and is remains a constant source of inspiration for me. Go buy all of his albums. And memorize them, as I have.

Newsflash: The smartwatch fad is over.

Not to say I told you so (just kidding, I say that all the time), but the cool factor has largely dissipated for consumers of "smartwatches."

As I said some 2 years ago when Apple's CEO spent the first 15-minutes of the AppleWatch launch event on how accurate the device tells time (so you're saying the clock on my phone isn't accurate?), the form factor sucks.

Smartphones -- completely changed the phone form factor. Mobile phones are no longer pocket sized phones with dial pads. They aren't even miniaturized computers with keyboards. They'e a touch/gesture/location aware interface to the world. A great form factor.

But with smartwatches, we saw zero meaningful form factor change. Watch band. Watch face. Yes, the face displays more than the time, but it's still a watch face.

I'll give smartwatches marks for being a stepping stone, but so was the Treo 650 (says this proud prior owner.) Wake me when you've done something unexpectedly cool that changes the form factor to something I might want to actually wear on my wrist, manufacturers. ___

Yes, my #ramendiet is stupid.

But only in name. I'm losing weight because of math, not because of the magical powers of mass-produced carb bricks flavored with goo and powdered things.

What's more stupid are the people who actually try the tapeworm diet. And when you consider there really isn, according to this article at least, any historical evidence that such a regiment ever did exist (anecdotes do not add up to evidence, and history is full of fantastical tales).

Me? I'm three days in with a stupidly low caloric intake (~1200 per day). I've figured out how to read "protein" in Thai, which will allow me to keep that at around 50 grams per day. I'll increase the calories as my stored reserves start to deplete themselves and I feel I need it. So far, I'm good with my current setup. If you're curious, here's the... more »

Day 2 of #ramendiet:

So, I really need to figure out how many grams of protein I'm getting, because I'm sure it's not enough. Tomorrow, I'll try my best to translate the nutrition information and see how much -- if any -- I'm getting from those packs of pork instant noodles. Two eggs won't cut it. But I did add a beer to the regiment tonight, so I've got that going for me.

And I've only had 1200 calories per day the last two days. That'll change when I start to feel hungrier, which I bet happens tomorrow. Ah, day three!

Yet another unconventional (crazy?) diet plan for me!

I'm fat. Again. While I managed to actually lose weight the first year of our travels*, nine months of living in a single place has caused me to pack on the pounds. Or kilos, as I'm no longer living in the USA. I've no idea how much I've gained, nor do I care. All I know is my shirts are getting a little tight, my moobs are back, and this shit has to change.

Those who've been with me a while will automatically assume I'm starting up +The Beer Diet (a brew story) again. Yes, it worked quite well for me several years in a row, shedding fat while drinking quality craft beer. Only now I'm in Thailand, and quality craft beer comes at a premium price. So that can't be the base of my diet.

Sausage-based diets (see above) are also out. There are some tasty sausages on the streets of Thailand, but the selection isn't nearly as varied as I'm used to, and I'm afraid I'd get very bored very quickly, ruining my long-term plan.

With my two go-to packaged goodness unavailable, I'm turning to an unlikely source: ramen. Specifically the cheap-ass ramen that has an entire aisle -- not a just a section -- in every Bangkok grocery store. The calories are easy to count (roughly 440 in these big-assed packages designed for two), they're ubiquitous, and they take just a few minutes to prepare. Best of all, I've learned that art of "doctoring" with various other components.

So it begins. I'd tell you my current measurements, but I don't have a cloth tape. So I'll go by clothes fitting. That's more important, anyhow.

My chosen topic: The DOMI, or Direction of Maximal Interestingness. I've been following Venkatesh Rao for some time now, so I hope he accepts my apologies for any gross errors I've made as I applied his concepts to the world of travel blogging.

And to all the MBA-thinking people who will read this and call me a complete moron: Welcome.
