Having trouble with +Blogger on +Google Chrome on OSX Yosemite.

I use a custom theme called BMAG (http://themeforest.net/item/bmag-magazine-responsive-blogger-template/8933899)

As of yesterday, my blog worked fine. Today, when I posted a new item, something went hinky:
1. If I try to visit the blog (http://filsalustri.blogspot.com/), it never finishes loading.
2. If I have the blog editor open in one tab, and the blog itself open in another, the blog never finishes loading and when I close the blog tab, the editor tab craps out (the "Oh Snap!" page).

I tried restarting Chrome; no help.

Even weirder, everything works fine in Safari.

Anyone got any ideas?
(I'm already looking into whether there's been an update or something to the BMAG theme.)

As with so many others, though, science and medical science are conflated, which makes it seem that so much more is wrong with science and engineering research than is actually the case.
Still, it's an excellent article that makes clear by example just how important it is that we not sit on our laurels.

Using reddit for science "outreach"

PLOS connects scientists to the public via reddit AMAs.
Successful AMAs get PLOS more clicks, which is how PLOS convinces authors to pay it's publication fees, so I can see why PLOS is doing this.
But it seems to me that reddit Science AMAs are really just preaching to the converted. And while it important to secure one's base in any conflict (in this case, the one between science and anti-science), that's not really what most people think of as outreach.
And that an article like this should appear on a site claiming to be "moving journalism education forward" yet be so... superficial, also makes me wonder what the point of it is at all.

In these days of mediocre reboots and never ending franchises, it's refreshing to see the Canuckistanians stepping up with two entirely new #sf TV shows, both of them quite fun.
Killjoys is about space bounty hunters and mixes interesting characters with very well executed action stuff.
Dark Matter is about 6 people who awaken on a spaceship having been robbed of their memories. They all have questionable histories, but not in the way one is first led to believe.
I don't know that either one is quite on par with the epic Orphan Black, but I think they're both worth watching.

12 year old girl married off by her father, then gets pregnant and miscarries, all because her father's insanity has been enabled by Islam.

Religion played a heavy hand in this tragedy. It provided the framework of a belief system that holds women to be immoral and spineless, and that excludes every other authority (e.g., medical science) from consideration. In other words, Islam is just plain wrong.
The imam in this story is a malevolent misogynist who enabled (and probably provoked) this horrible abuse. The father is criminally insane for having accepted these particular beliefs and having acted on them in a most sickening way. The husband is mentally ill at very least. How they're not all locked away for decades each is a travesty of justice is beyond me.

Hacking US immigration

The most interesting is Greender, billed as "Tinder for Green Card Seekers."
While part of my brain is thinking "That can't possibly end well," another part of my brain wonders if this isn't just a logical evolutionary adaptation of society to byzantine and obsolete notions of "nation."
I also think the one most likely to actually be both possible and beneficial is the one that helps immigrants who are bakers make foods using recipes from their home countries.

While this blog post is from Nov 2014, it at least seems to squarely place responsibility at the feet of http://luxurygetawaygroup.com/.  It also provides decent information on what you can do when you get these calls.

Some excellent observations about democracy in a globalized world.
While the running example is Greece, the real meat of the piece are about the unavoidable redistribution of power in a globalized society.
The problem, however, with this perspective, is that by casting the discussion in terms of power structures, it assumes some kind of general intent and influence by the participants to bring about the current state of affairs. That is, there's an an undercurrent to the piece that the Greek situation was intentionally created by actors who had the power to make it happen.
This cannot be true for two reasons:
1. The current set of players haven't been in power anywhere near long enough to have influenced the last few decades of European history. In some ways, the Greek crisis goes right back to the founding of the EU, which set in place the processes that led to the development... more »

That is, there's an an undercurrent to the piece that the Greek situation was intentionally created by actors who had the power to make it happen.
This cannot be true for two reasons:
1. The current set of players haven't been in power anywhere near long enough to have influenced the last few decades of European history. In some ways, the Greek crisis goes right back to the founding of the EU, which set in place the processes that led to the development of the institutions that today house the non-Greek individuals who are making decisions for Greece.
2. No one could have predicted the modern Greek crisis when the EU was founded more than 2 decades ago. Yet prediction is necessary if influential agents are to have brought it about. Indeed, this is the stuff of conspiracy theories.

There's no question that today, as things stand, power relationships are out of whack in the EU. But I think it's better to think of this situation as a systems problem without adding in the power relationships directly, but rather as natural and unavoidable feedback loops arising from he EU's structure. It stops us from thinking of blame and finger pointing, and keeps us focused on the essential task of looking for a way out of this mess that won't cause any more harm.
It also, hopefully, makes us wonder how we can fix North America, and even the rest of the world.

Ars Technica blows it big time.
This post suggests the University of Toronto has approved a course spewing anti-vaccination filth.
That's not true. As noted by a comment on the Ars site, UofT canned the course in question. The statement from UofT is available at http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/office/Provostial_Statements/July72015.htm.
What really irked me is that the program did not until recently have a program committee in place to ensure consistency across the program. Seriously?

The Indiegogo Greek Bailout failed, but it's not over yet

Almost 2M EUR were pledged for the bailout project, and all that money has been returned. Thom Feeney thought: Well, that's a shame.
He's got a new Indiegogo project that's seeking "only" 1M EUR.  That should be easy, but just to be sure, Feeney is flex-funding it - so all the money will be delivered even if the goal isn't met.

This time, Feeney is working with the group Desmos to get as many young people working as possible.  The younger generations are those that will suffer the most from continued misery in Greece, yet are those with the greatest potential to change things.

I'm kicking in 10 EUR.
