Evolution likes us tall and smart, but doesn't much care if we get sick, so long as we can reproduce.
Assuming the findings are verified, this underscores the differences between nature's goals and what we have come to believe is important.
One could argue that nature evolved us to outperform itself.
(Not that #evolution has any intent, of course.)

Let's help save Greece

This is such a crazy idea, I can't help but get behind it: crowdfunding a bailout for Greece.

Let's stop dicking around, people.  Sure, the Greek governments over the last few decades have borked things up.  So what?  If this crisis keeps growing, the Greek people will suffer miserably, and the ripple effects could well spread very, very far.  (Like the Dow's recent 350 point drop.)

Will it work?  I don't know.  But I'm not going to sit around with my thumb up my ass and let bureaucrats and politicians ruin the cradle of Western civilization.

Let's all help out.  I'm giving 10 EUR.

It seems Collections have partially replaced hashtags on #GooglePlus

It appears that Google has removed the autohashtag feature (i.e., that G+ automatically added a few hashtags to your posts) at just about the same time as it introduced collections.

Too bad.  I was starting to like the autohashtags.
As for collections... I'm unconvinced. At the moment, when I look at collections of people in my circles, I see a mangled mess of utterly disjointed piles of posts.  Not to say that each collection isn't very well curated - many are.  But when looking at all the collections of all the people in many circles.... I'm just not sure they're helping at all. Too many (partial) duplications; too many differences in collection names....

Three rules to create vision (in a fruit fly)

At the right level of abstraction, one finds surprising simplicity in how a brain develops.  Here's an instance of that.
What I found most interesting was this: "...growth cones do a better job finding the right target when they can detect one another converging from different directions than when they rely solely on a signal from the targets themselves."  That is, the growth cones + target together form a system that seeks a "stable" configuration, and that system operates better than just a cone and target alone.

I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually discover that the direction and speed of growth is oriented along some chemical gradient in the medium supporting both targets and cones.

I for one am damned glad that creationism has been banned from the classroom in UK.
+Laurence A. Moran raises some excellent points to support his claim that the ban is in fact bad, but I disagree.
The details will have to wait till I get my thoughts in order, but in a nutshell creationism was created for immoral, selfish, and harmful reasons. Banning the teaching of it is not the same, as Prof Moran proposes, as banning the teaching of evolution. It's the same as banning the teaching of racism as if it were true and moral.

This article completely misses the point of the OED.
It was always intended to capture the living language and not, as some other dictionaries, to be prescriptive or normative. Any edition of the full OED captures the entirety of English right back to its earliest documented forms, without prejudice or judgement.
The OED is one of the best ideas ever.
And as for this misguided article?

Deciphering circadian rhythms.
One protein guides it, and it affects everything about us - our emotions, our energy levels, our disposition, our attentiveness....
The true awesomeness of nature is how "big things have small beginnings."
Some people refuse to believe something like a protein can so completely rule us; they fear the simplicity. I think I can sympathsize, but only at an abstract level. I personally revel in it, it reassures me of the inherent simplicity and the complexity it creates.
