My wife just asked me to get the paisley table cloth.
Then she said: You know, the beige one with stripes.

This is what she meant.

"Quantum spookiness" may finally be a real thing

The best version yet of the Bell Experiment shows #entanglement is just as we thought it was.
But the article itself leaves a little to be desired.

"This did not work every time. In total, the team managed to generate 245 entangled pairs of electrons over the course of nine days."

Really? If you've just told someone you have the bestest, rightest answer to a question, you don't follow it up with, "but only sometimes." Honestly, couldn't the writer have given a bit a clue about why it didn't work every time? Was it just experimental error, or could it have been cuz entanglement is only part of the answer?

Sheesh.

Reasonably nice piece about the reactionary fools trying to stop #Uber and similar companies from taking over the taxi industry.

Even so, I think some important pieces are missing.

Like rampant corruption in the taxi companies and how they interact with local government, and the strong connection between ride-sharing and the "sharing economy" (the latter idea of which is one of the best we've had in many decades). Most people who are against Uber can't even tell the difference between Uber and UberX, and have drunk the kool-aid being offered up the taxi companies - in particular, that all the costs of a taxi are absolutely necessary. They're not, and Uber (and Lyft and the other similar companies who aren't in the news) have unequivocally shown us that they not. They're not, and Uber (and Lyft and the other similar companies who aren't in the news) have unequivocally shown us that they not. The taxi companies are, at this point, delusional if they think they can go back to how things were pre-Uber.
People didn't complain about taxis as much before Uber because they didn't even know an alternative was possible. Uber has let the genie out of the bottle, and it will not go back in.

Not to mention the rampant irrationality of the arguments against ride-sharing, which are rife with instances of the Tragedy of the Commons, excluded middles, overgeneralizations, etc.

Not that Uber is perfect, mind you, but that's what happens when human beings do things - they make mistakes. Many self-righteous prats have told me how they could have done it right and avoided all this fuss that Uber has created. And I laugh. Uber and similar companies are working is a nightmarish regulatory regime, in dozens of different cultural settings, with a bazillion different types of technologies.... Uber is solving a "hard problem," and anyone who thinks they could - on their own - do better than them, is displaying arrogance on a cosmological scale.

Luc Besson and strong female characters

Watching Lucy for the umpteenth time - because, well, Scarlett Johansson - it suddenly struck me that Luc Besson has a real penchant, comme on dit, for female characters who overcome impossible odds in bizarre situations.

Not that Besson only makes these kinds of movies, but does seem to come back to this idea regularly.

La Femme Nikita: druggie street urchin (Anne Parillaud) becomes powerful, self-assured assassin and turns the French Intelligence Service inside to escape and live free.

The Fifth Element: literally completely inexperienced alien (Milla Jovovich) becomes the "perfect being" and defeats an intergalactic evil, with moral support from Bruce Willis.

Lucy: ditzy student accidentally overdoses on a drug that pretty much makes her a god even though a significant portion of the Yakuza is trying to kill her.

I would like to think this is a good thing, but I can't really tell myself how women see these movies.

Cool novel wood construction techniques have the steel and concrete industries all butt-hurt.

The real question for me has to do with the life cycle impact of the production of the specialized wood products intended for use in these large constructions. It ain't just old fashioned timbers. I wouldn't mind seeing analyses of this engineered wood vs steel vs concrete, both at the manufacturing end and at the disposal end. I suspect that the wood will, overall, come out on top, but it'll be the evidence that decides it in the end.

#Wikipedia is not as reliable for politically controversial topics as for other topics.
#NoShitSherlock

I agree that transparency is needed, even if only via pseudonyms. Wikipedia needs ways to rate the value of contributions of editors, and then to ban publicly those most responsible for the lies, showing what they lied about, how often they did it, and the calculations that pit them below the threshold for legitimate editing.

We need this because, like it or not, Wikipedia has become far too important a resource for the general public worldwide. Personally, I still think that Citizendium (http://en.citizendium.org) is more robust, but at least for now there's little doubt Wikipedia is the champion.
