Clint Eastwood has been sliding slowly into irrelevance for years.
He's now passed all the way over to the other side and is now doing more harm than good.
Kind of like how Charlton Heston became a demented gun-freak as he aged.
What really disappoints me is that Tom Hanks was, apparently, a willing participant in this tripe.

I have zero problems saying it out loud: too many of the students I teach are unqualified to be in university.

They've been let in for bullshit political and financial reasons.

And I do everything I can to get them out of the program as quickly as possible, so that they can get their lives in order and move on.

What shall be done about the risible administration? Dunno. Above my pay grade. Can't fix other people's work ethics anyways.

Accidentally watched a few minutes of the TV show Chicago Med.

And nearly hurled.
In those few minutes, a man stayed alive and conscious without a heartbeat for more than a minute for the sake of seeing his newborn grandchild, and then a senior doctor advised a resident that etymology of psychology was "healing the soul."

Seriously? Could we get a little more bullshity?

Let's set aside the methodological flaws of these rankings.
It still leaves the matter that too many Canadian universities have lost all sense of what their role in society is, and that they are perfectly happy to bend right over for politicians and corporations, which will end up eviscerating academia and ultimately contributing to the collapse of civilization.

Well, here's a good idea!
See, the underlying idea of a fine is to deter bad behaviour by imposing a financially meaningful fine. To be financially meaningful, it's got to be proportional to the relative wealth of the individual offender, which is pretty well-approximated by income.
So, hell yeah, I'd be in favour of this.

#Soylent is good when you have a "stomach bug"

Guess how I learned this one....

Anyways, since it's "vegan," Soylent is the kind of food one can have even when one has a stomach bug. It's probably too heavy for really bad cases, but for moderate stuff, I have discovered its great.

Usually, doctors will put one on the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, apples, and toast. But those are not particularly complete from a dietary POV. Since soylent has literally everything in it, it provides a much better balance than BRAT.

I'm not a doctor or expert on such matters. I'm just telling you what I've learned from experience.

My latest daily #fountainpen - a Jinhao 188

Regardless of how much I love my Pilot Decimo Vanishing Point, I have so many other pens. So I reluctantly decided to put the Decimo aside and try out another recent acquisition - a Jinhao 188 in burgundy, from Wonder Pens (1). I bought it a few months ago and have stupidly forgotten the exact price. But it wasn't more than $10.

Now you'd think that a $10 pen couldn't possibly compare to that lovely - and expensive - Decimo. But you'd be wrong. I've loaded it up with Herbin Lie de The (2) ink, and I've been using it a couple of weeks now. And I must say, I'm damned impressed.

Regardless of how much I love my Pilot Decimo Vanishing Point, I have so many other pens.

It was its smooth and minimalist design that first attracted me. It's got a very smooth exterior and appears to be painted with a lacquer. Feels that way too. The nib is medium but it writes like a fine if you keep a light touch; this is great for me as I write lightly and prefer fine nibs. It's innards also impressed me. It appears to be fully metal - except for some parts of the converter - and the threads are smooth and made to surprisingly tight tolerances. The thick clip is very stiff, but it's spring loaded onto the cap, so it still opens easily enough to clip onto relatively thick materials. Because of its metal construction, it's quite heavy and solid. I find it sits very comfortably in my hand.

I was also very surprised by how smooth it writes - so unexpectedly smooth that I let out an audible gasp when I first used it. By comparison, the Decimo was scratchy. In the time I've used it, though, I have found it a bit on the dry side. This is most problematic when I write my signature, which is big and splashy and fast. When I'm writing normally, though, it performs quite well. Oddly, though, the nib does not dry out much even after not using it for a day or two.

I'll remind you again that this pen costs $10.

The one problem I have with the pen is that the snap-on cap requires significant force to pull off and click back on. It's probably the tightest cap of any fountain pen I own (over 200 now, I'm ashamed to say). It's quite distracting to have to yank that sucker off. I noticed it when I was mucking about with it in the store, and I tried a couple of other 188's to see if perhaps that one was a bit of a dud. But they were all quite challenging to uncap. C'est la vie; considering how well it writes and how good it looks, I guess I can accept a flaw or two for $10.

Did I metnion it costs only $10?

Overall, I give this pen a solid B+. It's a great pen for everyday use that nonetheless has a touch of class. Load it with a nice ink, and you'll have a winning combination.

Duplicate calendar entries?

Here's an admittedly weird situation.

Background: On my Note 7, I'm logged into my work Google account and my personal Google account. The accounts' calendars are aware of each other. So in Google Calendar on the Note 7, I see each of my various individual calendars listed twice, once under my work account and again under my personal account. Let's consider one such calendar, C, that appears green in my personal account and red in my work account.

Now, in KWGT, in Settings, I see a single list of calendars that appears to be the union set of all the calendars from both my work and personal accounts. No problem, so far. In fact, I like that idea.

Here's the problem: when I have an event in my work calendar, it shows up twice in my KWGT widget. And when I paint them by their calendar colours, one comes out green and the other red.

This suggests to me that KWGT is actually pulling events from both my accounts. But since it shows each calendar only once in Settings, I have no way to get rid of the duplicate.

I don't remember this happening with my old nexus 6. I got the Note 7 on 19 Aug, and I'm not sure if the problem is in the Note 7's version of Marshmallow or in KWGT. But I thought I'd ask here.

Any ideas?___

Probably the most useless bit of news you'll hear today.

Considering the suffering she actually caused*, which the Church in typical fashion continues to deny, she should be named Misanthrope of the Year.

A system loop from hell.
Lack of education makes people irrational.
Irrational people destabilize society.
Everyone fear destabilization.
Democracy only works with rational agents.
So totalitarianism takes hold as the only alternative.
Totalitarianism encourages a dumb citizenry, and therefore further undermines education.
Wash, rinse, and repeat till your civilization collapses around you.

I can't get my phone to focus better than this on it. It's dead centre against the dark background running diagonally to right to bottom left.
