I will again remind people that a "third option" can lead to vote-splitting.
This can in turn lead to a Drumpf presidency.
Which is what no one (with a functioning brain) wants.

If you would have voted Libertarian anyways, then fine - go ahead.

However, if you're considering voting for Johnson because you cannot bring yourself to vote for Drumpf, then reconsider. The odds are hugely against a Johnson presidency. Clinton is the only candidate who can reasonably be expected to beat Drumpf. If you really don't want Drumpf, your best bet to ensure it is to vote for Clinton.

Awesome progress on understanding how blood flows

What isn't explicitly covered in the article, but is my own biggest takeaway, is that a typical reductionist explanation still appears entirely sufficient and, more importantly, there is no evidence to think a non-reductionist explanation will ever be needed.

And a not so new paper: AN EXPLORATION OF THE HUMAN ELEMENT IN COLLABORATION
by Hunter & Salustri

Abstract: In this paper, the authors propose that there is an inconsistency in the understanding of collaboration and of the collaborator because of a contradiction between human attitudinal and behavioural characteristics on the one hand, and that which is required from a collaborator and through collaboration on the other. We will argue that the sources of this contradiction are an overdependence on scientific quantification, and certain factors that affect the sociological and psychological formation of individuals and their relationships. We believe that this misunderstanding can be corrected through proper training and we suggest some avenues in that regard.

New paper: Cognitive mapping links human factors to corporate
strategies
by Village, Salustri, and Neumann

(Well, it's not that new, thanks to silly embargoes by publishers, but there you have it.)

Abstract: Human factors (HF) can improve business performance. Our objective is to harness individual tacit knowledge from senior directors about human factors as it relates to strategic goals and to make explicit their shared managerial thinking with an aim to identifying improvement opportunities using HF. Individual cognitive maps were drawn during one-hour interviews with seven senior directors of a large electronics firm. The maps were then merged on a common strategic goal of ‘improving quality’ into a group map containing 221 concepts and 900 loops. The maps were then merged on a common strategic goal of ‘improving quality’ into a group map containing 221 concepts and 900 loops. In a two hour workshop with the directors, reducing fatigue, improving systems design, and reducing repetitive activities were concepts that emerged as critical-to-quality. Workshop discussions identified untapped improvement opportunities. Directors viewed the maps as a dynamic indicator of their HF performance. Making the connection between HF and strategic goals explicit can help an organisation identify opportunities to improve human, and therefore business, performance.___

Drumpf-alikes in Italy are just as fucked up as they are in US.
(For those who don't know, the Italian MP in question is a member of Forza Italy, a relatively new populist party led by Italy's own Drumpf, Silvio Berlusconi.)
Here's a benefit of having more than 2 political parties - when one of them implodes, you've got a Plan B. Both Forza Italia and the GOP are on the verge of imploding. But the results for Italy and US will be vastly different. Italy will barely notice.

Another gem by +Sabine Hossenfelder about philosophy & science

"Before we start I have to warn you that the paper speaks a lot about realism and underdetermination, and I couldn’t figure out what exactly the authors mean with these words. Sure, I looked them up, but that didn’t help because there doesn’t seem to be an agreement on what the words mean. It’s philosophy after all."

Don't even know where to start complaining about this lifeboat design.

First of all, when it's wide open and when 10 or 20 panicky people are trying to get into it, it'll just fold up like a pile of flotsam.
Second, when it's all closed up, with 3 or four people inside, and it's getting tossed around in 3m swells (as suggested by one of the images), the people inside will be pureed to paste.

Another quite stellar #design #fail

On the joy of being a "loner"

If psychological growth & development really improve from living single, then a population of singles is more likely to have better overall mental health, be more emotionally mature, etc. - thus leading to an overall improvement of societal well-being. This would be another nail in the coffin of the notion of life-time commitments, families, etc.

There is a bit of a conundrum there, though: singles enjoy and participate more fully with family and friends. But being single really limits the odds of creating a new family. Not to mention dampen the ability to reproduce and make more loners. So a population of singles will undermine one of the sources by which their own development and growth is promoted - family. The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either white meat (Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).

P.S. Don't bother writing back to tell me that this is a hoax.
I know Squirrel is not a red meat.___

+Sabine Hossenfelder knocks one out of the park again.
"For the last ten years you’ve been told that the LHC must see some new physics besides the Higgs because otherwise nature isn’t “natural” – a technical term invented to describe the degree of numerical coincidence of a theory. I’ve been laughed at when I explained that I don’t buy into naturalness because it’s a philosophical criterion, not a scientific one. But on that matter I got the last laugh: Nature, it turns out, doesn’t like to be told what’s presumably natural."

17,614 idiots want Rotten Tomatoes shut down because of crappy DC movie reviews.

Set aside the question of whether DC movies are any good. The question is on the utter blather of trying to shut RT down.

Here's the thing, as far as I can tell: idiots have always existed. Now, however, they are allowed to roam free and consume valuable bandwidth - not to mention our time, attention, and even in some cases tax dollars (I'm thinking of climate change denialist idiots, anti-vaxer idiots, etc.) - whereas in the past, they would have just been told to go to bed without dinner.

We need to stop thinking that idiots can just do things like that and get away with it. Granted, shutting down a movie review site is pretty insignificant in the grander scheme of things, but it's typical of a much, much broader and more serious problem.

Granted, shutting down a movie review site is pretty insignificant in the grander scheme of things, but it's typical of a much, much broader and more serious problem.___

Drumpf's Taj Mahal in Atlantic City is closing.

Math blind
[Img Src: LifeScience ] Why must school children suffer through so much math which they will never need in their life?
