3 reasons to stop hating one-on-one meetings

All too often, managers and team members reject a regular check-in because they think it's a waste of time. But when done well, one-and-one meetings are a great way to build trust and rapport. That weekly time slot is a predictable time for feedback and coaching. Even when a manager and team member get along well, a regular one-on-one is an opportunity to impart information privately, to raise emotional issues before they fester, to address career challenges, and to help managers make better decisions with team input.

Yes, I wrote that -- and I'm damned proud of it. It's also accompanied by an in-depth white paper (linked-to from the article) that shares I-promise-you-useful advice about doing one-on-ones well.

How to Start a Business at Any Age: Part 6

I’m still in business! I netted $28.20 since Feb. 22, when I launched. My gross profit was much higher, of course, but after I subtracted the base price of my shirts and mugs (Cost of Goods Sold), the money I paid the designers from Fiverr (Contract Labor), and what I paid for Facebook ads, it all comes down to “retained earnings” of $28.20, and I didn’t even keep those, because I promised 10% of the gross to SySTEM Schools, the STEM charter school for high needs kids in downtown Phoenix, so I gave SySTEM $41.00.
After six weeks, I haven’t myself taken anything from the business, InspirationsFromFrancine, but I’m not there yet. I’m still learning all the things I thought I knew from being a coach, but have learned in a new and deeper way from operating the business.

Contract labor can give you a product that isn’t what you wanted if you don’t make yourself clear enough the first time
Facebook ads don’t really convert for physical goods, unless you get your audience narrow enough, and that is amazingly difficult to do
Your own friends will support you once, and then cease to engage. After all, how much stuff can they buy.
My mugs sell better than my t-shirts
Messages that are meaningful to me sell better than random messages
The “sport” of internet marketing requires unbelievable focus, concentration and perseverance
All those gurus who tell you how to sell using Facebook ads must be followed to the letter, which is incredibly labor intensive, for them to work
8. Each pivot brings me closer to the goal: I’ve changed ad strategies, product mixes, contractors and messages in an almost constant iterative process, which is right out of the Lean Startup methodology — and which really works. I take all customer feedback.
9. Money is important to most people, who do not have any to throw around. I throw more money around to support the endeavors of strangers on IndieGoGo than my Facebook friends have thrown toward me. This could depress me if I let it. I don’t.
10. Even micro entrepreneurship, like what I’m doing, is energizing and compelling.
My next move: after attending Laura Fitton’s workshop on inbound marketing, I realized that I was using my Facebook brand page all wrong. I was using it as too much of a selling tool and not giving anything back. So I am going to make a slow transition of it into an inspirational blog. I still think people need inspiration. I know I do.
NB: When I started, I named my page InspirationfromFrancine, and then named my ViralStyleStore “InspirationsFromFrancine.” I’m trying to decide whether the names should be the same for brand consistency, or different since all the items in the store ARE plural and the Facebook page is singular:-) Experts?___

The panel was terrific this week -- +deirdre breakenridge, +Francine Hardaway, and +Christine Perkett joined me for a lively conversation on (among other things) the truly awful layoff announcement from Carrier Corp., the blowback from a Meltwater white paper advocating the use of AVEs as a metric for PR, and how social media will affect the race for the White House.

Very complicated decision about online privacy today from the EU. TL:DR is that US Safe Harbor doesn't apply. Max Schrems, an Austrian grad student sued the Irish Data Protection Commisioner for allowing his data to be transferred off Facebook's Irish servers to the US, where Snowden's revelations about surveillance have freaked Europeans out about privacy violations.  More than this I am not competent to report, but here's the article from EU Politico: http://www.politico.eu/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/schrems-judgment.pdf

It's a big deal in Europe. Feel free to add to this thread and/or correct what I've said.

I Went Paleo and Now I Hate Everything

Please put aside whatever religious sentiments you have about the Paleo Diet, and read this because it is simply the funniest thing I've read in months.

Recently, I went pseudo Paleo.

I say pseudo, because, like most things in my life, I’ve jumped in headfirst without putting any thought or research into it (this is also how I ended up taking a workout class called “Insanity.” Afterwards, I was drooling and delirious. So I guess it delivered).

It just happens to be by Geraldine, the wife of +Rand Fishkin, and I don't even know why I mentioned that because she'd be just as good a writer if she were actually sleeping with "the guy from the farmers market" instead of Rand (read the piece!).

Founded in 2014 by Reese, Knowingly offers a number of websites and services, including iforetold.com, where people can log predictions about the future, and Correctica, a tool which catches errors in documents and websites that spell checkers miss. ___

The building industry is about to get a kick in the pants. Buildings won't be allowed to be "sick" anymore. And what a wonderful next step for my good friend and former "boss" Wendy Vittori #Intel, #motorola, HEALTH PRODUCT DECLARATION COLLABORATIVE NAMES WENDY VITTORI EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Accomplished business executive will head building industry standards group dedicated to transparency and disclosure of material contents and health information The Health Product Declaration Collaborative (HPD Collaborative) is pleased to announce that Wendy Vittori has joined the organization as its new Executive Director.“We are excited to welcome such an outstanding leader to our organization. Wendy’s commitment and enthusiasm for our mission - to bring a new level of transparency to the building industry - have been evident in the work she has done for us as a strategic consultant to the organization since its inception. Her deep experience bridges the worlds of green building, information technology and executive leadership. As we move forward to the next phase of growth for the Health Product Declaration (HPD) Open Standard, we could not be more pleased to have Wendy as our new Executive Director,” said Amanda Kaminsky, HPD Collaborative Board Chair and Sustainable Construction Manager for the Durst Organization. Wendy Vittori has over thirty years of executive leadership experience in the technology industry, where she was an executive with the Intel and Motorola corporations. During her corporate career she was a corporate officer and had P&L responsibilities at the division level. She also was a leader in the development of several industry computing standards. Since 2007 she has been the founder and principal consultant of Vittori Consulting LLC, a strategic consulting firm. With clients from the for-profit, non-profit and governmental , her work has focused on improving strategic organization implementation and performance. She has a distinguished record of public service as a member of boards and commissions focused on the economic development and sustainability of the Arizona- Sonora region. She is an associate faculty member at the Non-Profit Management Institute the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation, where she teaches in the field of strategic management. “This is a pivotal moment in the evolution of transparency in the building industry,” said Vittori. “In three short years the Health Product Declaration Open Standard has been embraced by many leading customers and manufacturers in the building industry. It has been incorporated into several of the most important certifications for green building, such as LEED® v41 and the WELL Building Standard®2. I am excited and honored to be asked by the HPD Collaborative’s Board to assume this leadership role at this critical juncture and be able to use my past experience, particularly in the open standards innovation sphere, to build on the excellent accomplishments of the HPD Collaborative’s first three years.” Vittori replaces John Knott, who served as Executive Director for the previous two years. “The Board is appreciative of the contributions that John has made to our growth, the successful uptake of the HPD Open Standard Version 1, and important harmonization efforts with HPDC partners,” said Board Chair Kaminsky. The HPD Collaborative is currently in the process of finalizing Version 2 of its groundbreaking HPD Open Standard, the first voluntary, customer-led industry standard of its kind focused on the transparent disclosure of material contents and health information. Over 50 manufacturers are engaged with the Collaborative and its Technical Committee in the development of this new version, as well as the updating of the HPD Builder to support Version 2.  The group is also participating with others, under a grant given to the U.S. Green Building Council by Google Inc., to explore mechanisms to harmonize the HPD Open Standard with other public and private product content information tools. The rapid development and deployment of the HPD Open Standard is already beginning to transform how both customers and manufacturers think and act about the contents and health impacts of building materials. The next few years are about accelerating this progress in disclosure, and using this to catalyze innovative manufacturing practices resulting in high performing healthy products across the construction industry, at a scale that will ensure affordable pricing. With the growth of these results, for the first time designers and specifiers will have a real option to select from a meaningful range of products where health impacts are understood,” said Vittori. About the Health Product Declaration Collaborative The Health Product Declaration Collaborative is a customer-led organization committed to the continuous improvement of the building industry’s environmental and health performance through transparency and innovation. The HPD Collaborative created, supports and advances the HPD Open Standard, a format that enables transparent disclosure of building product content and associated health information. It is freely available to all at www.hpd-collaborative.org. 1 The U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® green building program is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of high-performance green buildings. Starting to get requests to meet with me at Wearable World Expo. I don't ever make appointments in advance; I like to write the opportunistic things, and I don't know them until I see them.

It does need fixing, but not shutting down.

How to fix Google+.

(Read my column: http://goo.gl/TFqqXy )

Through much of its existence, Google's social network has often been criticized as a "ghost town" that's "dead" and about to be shut down. The criticisms always come from non-users.

Google+ fans always chime in to rebut those criticisms, often flooding the story or post with disagreement. With all those passionate users, how can it be a ghost town?

The controversy about Google+ engagement never seems to end.

But whatever the current level of activity on Google+ is, it could be vastly higher if Google itself wasn't holding back users by suppressing public posts, removing comments, hiding amazing content and failing to fully use the technology it has already developed.

Here are 10 ways Google could radically crank up the engagement on Google+:
