This week's #NewBirdPoker is all about Shots You Really Like
"For what-ever reason".......
If you would like to, you can tell us a bit about why you like it ..
#BirdPoker was created by +Phil Armishaw

In March 2015 I spent a week in Florida with a professional togger exploring various parks and bird sanctuaries. I could easily post dozens of photos from that trip. Near the Cape Coral public library we found lots of Burrowing Owl nests ... errr ... burrows. What I like about this shot is how the owl on the right is stretching so he's eye level with the one on the left. They are comical little birds and they are staring at each other, making me wonder what they are talking about.

N is for Northern Flicker
I posted a good picture earlier today. This evening I took a short hike, mainly looking for butterflies. (I found a couple.) I spotted a Flicker in a tree and when I got closer I realized that there were 2 birds. When I got home and saw my photos on a big monitor I discovered that I had captured 5 birds. I was using my 70-300mm instead of my big birding lens. Right after this I shot 2 Goldfinches in a dead tree. Later I heard the 2 Barred Owls that live in the woods (I live a couple of miles away) but I couldn't find them.

I'm well chuffed! A few weeks ago a new microbrewery opened in my town. The owners asked the Harford Artists' Association (I'm a member) to supply artwork. The interior is industrial in style (it used to be a car body shop) so I submitted 2 B&W prints and an aged color photo. Last night the HAA held their party there and I got to see my work on the wall. The B&W stateroom on board the SS John W. Brown Liberty  ship was on the wall at the left side of the bar and the antique Chevy in front of the Brown was next to the door to our room. I looked at all the other photos and paintings and couldn't find my third photo. Holy mother of Buddha, it was smack dab in the center behind the bar! I was so excited that I forgot to take my empty dish home and I have to fetch it tonight.

Saturday was the official first day of Bald Eagle season at Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River in Maryland. (The Chesapeake Bay starts a few miles downriver.) There were more paparazzi along the fence up at my level. It will look like this until January. While we have resident Bald Eagles year round, for about 3 months the numbers grow with migrating eagles who stay here for the fishing at the base of the dam. The hawk and owl were some of the rescues on display during Saturday's event. There is a huge Great Blue Heron rookery on the island.

I try to be accurate with my bird photography. My new project is to apply appropriate effects for an "artistic" look. While I don't want to get all Instagrammy I still prefer B&W from my film days. Today I toured Gettysburg and I thought what could be more appropriate than a wet plate look using Google/Nik Analog Efex Pro 2? (I started with a 5-shot HDR.) Here is Robert E. Lee with his horse Traveller.
