scary-cookie

Being really bad at naming things, while at the same time not wanting to confuse people by prefixing my elements to match the official elements (iron-..., carbon-...), I decided to start my own collection of scary-elements because Scarygami is the nickname I got stuck with at some point. (But that is another story and shall be told another time.)

This collection will mostly consist of elements I need in the course of developing demos or while migrating some of the internal web projects at work to Polymer.

In this specific case I decided to adopt the (seemingly) abandoned polymer-cookie (https://github.com/PolymerLabs/polymer-cookie) which I originally sent some PRs to, in order to make use of it for (annoying, but legally necessary) cookie consent informations.

I added some tests (testing anything cookie-related is really "fun"), created a docs and demo page, improved some things and planning to maintain this component from now on.

Gegrillter Rhabarber schmeckt echt gut, mir zumindest. Alle anderen konnten damit irgendwie nichts anfangen. Egal, bleibt mehr für mich.

Grilled rhubarb tastes really good, at least to me. All the others didn't really like it. Doesn't matter, it's more for me then.

Polymer and the [hidden] attribute

hidden is a convenience attribute to hide page elements that are not relevant in the current context/state of the website.

It is especially useful in a Polymer web app, since you can use attribute binding to show/hide elements based on (computed) properties.

There are several cases where you will have to be careful with this attribute though.

Now playing: DOTT

Even after all those years Day of the Tentacle hasn't lost any of its charm, making it one of the best adventure games of all times. I still remembered most of the riddles which made this a rather easy playthrough but I definitely got more of the subtle jokes hidden everywhere than I did before.

The new graphics are nice, but I didn't really like the new control style. It was easier to use the new control style with a controller, but I prefer playing with a mouse so I switched to the original controls at some point.

If you have played it before you will probably need no convincing to play it again. If you have never played it before, you are in for a treat.

Oh my, first the refurbished version of DOTT and now a long-awaited sequel for Samorost. All the goodies coming at the same time :)

Samorost 3 is finally out after five years of development. The game is available for $19.99 through various stores, most importantly on our own official website samorost3.net. Samorost 3 Cosmic Edition - containing the full game, 90-minute original soundtrack by Floex (MP3 and FLAC) and 170-page digital art book (PDF) featuring design drawings from Jakub Dvorský – is also available for $24.99. In both versions you'll find download links for Windows and Mac files and a Steam Key.

Visit samorost3.net for more info.___Oh my, first the refurbished version of DOTT and now a long-awaited sequel for Samorost. All the goodies coming at the same time :)

When are you going to fix the annoying "feature" that lets random people join your non-collaborative albums, to be prominently displayed on the top of your album, without any way for the album owner to remove them?

No matter how "smart" you make the albums (and I have to agree that the new feature is really neat) I won't be sharing Google Photos albums until this is fixed.

And yes, I have submitted feedback through the normal functionality as well on a regular basis since the shared albums launched, but nothing has changed in the months since.

Old recipe and photos, new layout.

I want to give the new "smarter" Google Photos albums [1] a try, so I added the actual description to an old photo recipe album of mine (yes, you can edit your existing albums), and the result is actually quite good.

Note: not sure if this is rolled out to everyone yet. If not you will only see a regular photo album.

Now if they could make the sharing options and behavior a little bit more logical and friendly I would actually be tempted to come back to Google Photos for regular sharing again.

#Polymer quicktip:

If you are developing web-based business applications or generally applications with the main focus of data entry and data display, you should definitely have a look at the web components developed by Vaadin.

https://vaadin.com/elements

Since I have the possibility at the moment to include Polymer in some internal web-apps at work, components like the vaadin-date-picker [1] and vaadin-combo-box [2] have proven to be very, very useful.

Some of you might still know my old discovery-check page that would keep track of changes happening to Google's discovery-based APIs, and allow quick discovery of new APIs appearing
https://discovery-check.appspot.com/

I felt it was time for a refresh and instead of building on top of my "antiquated" code I decided to do a full rewrite/rethinking of the site, moving the backend to Firebase and creating a new frontend in Polymer.

For now the checks are only done on request from the client-side but I'm looking into having a regular job running to check for new updates. I'm also looking into moving/converting some/all of the historic data from the App Engine datastore to Firebase.

Some of the changes you will see in the diffs are only a new revision without any other changes to the docs, which mostly likely means they are working on some fixes that don''t affect the look or behavior of the API. But sometimes you will come across some more interesting changes, and new APIs popping up.

I will publish the source code of this new version soonish, after I added some more features I want to add , and cleaned and documented the code a bit more.

For now, here a quick overview of the technologies/components used:

paper-elements [1] for layout with neon-animated-pages [2] for the transitions between list and detail view

A <discovery-apis-list> element for fetching the current APIs from Google's API Discovery Service [3], with the element being automatically generated from the discovery document of the API Discovery Service [4] via my <discovery-api-elements> element [5].

firebase-element [6] for read/write access to the data stored on Firebase.

jsdiff [7] to create the diffs between different revisions of a discovery document on the client-side, running in a WebWorker [8] so it doesn't freeze the browser.

Busy day in the garden again.

Started putting an edging around the path in our greenhouse to prevent earth from getting on it when watering the plants.
Planted a Cornus kousa "China Girl"
Prepared our vegetable patch for the season.
Renewed the limewash and protective glue on all the fruit trees.
Planted some new violets.

And all the plants are starting to wake up from their hibernation. The rhubarb is coming out of the ground and our apricot tree is starting to bloom beautifully.

One of our first big projects for this garden year which kept us busy (in addition to making our Speck) over the last few weeks was to rearrange the side of our garden where two old sour cherry trees were standing. While they were beautiful trees and it was a bit sad to remove them, we didn't like the taste of the sour cherries at all, and decided to replace them with fruits we actually like. Removing the trees was a lot of work because of deep and long roots close to the path/fence. With the trees gone we planted a new quince tree, and some red and white currants along the fence. A few weeks ago we had already planted an elder bush in the corner.

Unfortunately it was already dark when we were finished with the work today, so some of the photos didn't turn out so great.

I've had some fun over the past few weeks to force Polymer to work on Blogger, or rather to force Blogger to work with Polymer, and here are my results, some of which might be more useful than others.

Our pork-shoulder has been smoked for several hours over night now and rested during the day. Already starting to taste good but will be smoked some more times over the next few nights.

Our pork shoulder has now been cured for over a week. After getting well washed and dried it now rests in the fridge and will be smoked the first time tomorrow night.

Our next project after the salmon success:

A full pork shoulder to be turned into speck over the next couple of weeks.

Ingredients per kg meat:
~50g of coarse salt mixed with the appropriate amount of "pink" curing salt as per instructions
~1Tsp of sugar
Reasonable amounts of pepper, juniper, garlic, rosemary, bay laurel, marjoram and any other herbs and spices you like.

We rubbed the mixture all over the shoulder and then vacuum sealed it to cure in the fridge for at least 1-2 weeks.

Cold-smoked salmon

For completeness here's the full recipe we used.

For 1kg of salmon filet (thicker pieces are better), you will need

125 g coarse sea salt
70 g sugar
15 g coarse pepper
3 Tbsp Oregano (or any other herbs/spices you feel like adding)

A little bit of a high-proof spirit (Whisky, Gin, Schnapps, anything will do really)

Mix salt, sugar, pepper, Oregano and any other herbs/spices you want together.

Put the salmon filets skin down on a wire rack in a pan and cover them all over with the salt mixture.

Leave them in the fridge for about 24 hours.

Wash away the salt mixture completely and pat the filets dry before putting them back on the wire rack.

Brush the filets with the high-proof spirit for sterilizstion.

Let them rest in the fridge for another 24 hours.... more »

Prepare a cold-smoke generator with sawdust (beech or any other wood you like).

Smoke the salmon for at least 8 hours.

Depending on how smoky you want it you can have several smoking periods, with at least 4 hours of rest in between.

Cold-smoked salmon, cheese and egg are all done.

The cheese is great, but I like cheese a lot anyway, and the egg is good, but didn't really need the smoking.

The salmon is almost too smoky and salty towards the tail end, but get's really delicious once you get to the thicker parts, so for the next time (and yes, this experiment is definitely worth repeating) we will try to get two whole salmon filets to have more of the good parts.

Things you might not know: You can find this edible fungus (jelly ear, Judas' ear, or whatever you want to call it) out in the wild growing on elder trees/bushes.

So after a good night's rest the salmon together with some cheese and cooked eggs went on our kettle barbecue with a cold-smoke generator.

It wasn't quite done smoking in the evening but we couldn't resist trying a little bit which already was quite good. Final results tomorrow :)

Nice day in the garden today.

Harvested some last broccoli for dinner today which turned out great and some carrots for dinner tomorrow. Also got around to pruning all our fruit trees.

Salmon was left in the salt/herbs/spices crust over night and already the meat has gotten a lot firmer. Already tastes good as well ;)

Now it will rest in the fridge for another night before being smoked tomorrow :)
