Vorwort zu "The Last Witchfinder" - rescheduled to Nov 142012-11-14 19:00:004

Das erlesen wir - und was wir gefunden haben, tauschen wir aus. Am 19. Now playing: Dreamfall Chapters - Book 3

Note: might contain some spoilers, but I tried to refrain from facts and screenshots that haven't been revealed in the trailer for this part anyway.

Returning to the twin worlds of Stark and Arcadia, this part is rather short especially compared to the extensive book 2, but it also progresses the story the farthest. It seems the previous books were only a build-up to finally get the story going, especially on Zoë's side, with her finally regaining her memories (in a rather unspectacular way without changing anything really), leaving Propast (which has become quite an unliveable place under martial law) to return to Marcuria and teaming up with Crow again (who's role is far too small in this book, hoping for more in the next).

Production so far this year (not all in this photo):

4 bottles of elderflower syrup - collected in the wild

3 bottles of apple-herb syrup - herbs from our garden and the wild, apple juice from the super market, until we hopefully have our own next year

10 jars of strawberry syrup - with strawberries picked ourselves in a strawberry land, we eat all that grow in our garden...

6 bottles of red currant syrup - from our own fruits

Today we harvested our first cucumber, which ended up in some salad for dinner, our first eggplants, which ended up on the grill, and about 3 kg of red currants, which ended up being cooked, sieved through a food mill, mixed with sugar, cooked again and filled in bottles as syrup.

Data Binding vs. Event Handling

Refactoring some of my projects from Polymer 0.5 (or earlier) to Polymer 1.0 I found myself using data binding and computed properties for situations where I previously had event handlers doing the "hard work". Since I think this is a rather nice and clean pattern  I thought I'd give some examples for this.

Now playing: Kholat

I've seen several mentions and great reviews of this game over the last few days and so I decided to give it a try myself, and wasn't disappointed (even though I only played like an hour so far).

The game has very captivating and beautiful scenery, some impressive weather physics and a nice soundtrack to lead you through the story. Not sure how the story will develop yet, but the world has enough interesting things to explore to keep me going for a while. I'll have to be a bit more careful though since I already managed to die twice...

I really like that there is no HUD, you can use a compass and/or a map, but that feels more like if you are actually holding those items. I'd wish more games would take this approach as opposed to having the screen overloaded with information all the time.

When they started advertising the first Dishonored they showed off a lot of different and creative ways to kill people using a mixture of magic and tech. I found it far more interesting and challenging though to move through the game in a completely stealthy and non-lethal way, not leaving any traces behind me. Looking forward to trying the same in the sequel :)

Pizza from the Grill - Take 2

Our first attempt several weeks ago turned out a bit of a disaster with the pizza falling apart while trying to get it unto the pizza stone.

This time around with more experience and the knowledge that slightly smaller and thicker pizzas are easier to work with, things turned out much better :)

Polymer Quicktip - Attributes vs. Properties

One of the more frequent questions/issues on Stack Overflow and the Polymer Slack channel is related to how attribute names are mapped to property names, details about which are a bit hidden away in the docs [1][2].

So here a quick summary and reminder of how the new mapping works.

discovery-api-elements

Making good progress on my Polymer element that automatically creates Polymer elements to access discovery-based APIs.
https://scarygami.github.io/discovery-api-elements/components/discovery-api-elements

1. Reading and writing API methods are now supported.

2. There is a new `discovery-api-docs` element that allows you to get a documentation for the automatically generated elements to help you in the development process (based on iron-component-page[1]).

Sample for the Google+ API: https://scarygami.github.io/discovery-api-elements/components/discovery-api-elements/demo/demo-docs.html

3. Since the elements are using the API Client Library for JavaScript [2], authentication can easily be achieved via the `google-signin` [3] element. Once authentication is done all API calls will automatically be authenticated.

4. You can also create elements for your own cloud endpoints [4] hosted on Google Cloud Platform. To demonstrate this I've implemented the infamous Tic-Tac-Toe sample using this element.
Demo: https://scarygami.github.io/discovery-api-elements/components/discovery-api-elements/demo/demo-endpoints.html

And just because I can this is using cloud endpoints running in Dart on a managed VM as backend using my dart-endpoints library :)

On the Saturday after I/O we first went to the farmer's market at Ferry Plaza, then strolled along the pier passing the Exploratorium to re-visit our secret garden on the way up to Coit Tower.

And then we had to be on our way to the airport for our long journey back home.

I'm currently not sure if I will keep this collection untouched and create a new one for SF & I/O 2016 next year, or if I will just rename it to SF & I/O and reuse it for all the next years. Thoughts?

A new API just appeared in the Discovery Service which for the first time allows you some access to your projects in the Google Developers Console.

Google Cloud Resource Manager API

Not only can you list your projects (even though you only get id, name and creation date), you can actually create and delete projects.

Not sure how helpful automatic creation of projects is since you can't really do much automatically from there since the automatically enabled cloud services require billing to be enabled before you can use them.

No official documentation available for it yet, but here's the discovery document:
https://discovery-check.appspot.com/cloudresourcemanager/v1beta1

With no official announcement or documentation out yet, you should use this API with care, but it definitely looks interesting. Hoping for some more programmatic access to projects, like querying current quota limits for APIs (something people request on a regular basis).

Finally catching up with some of the albums I haven't shared from our stay in SF yet.

On Wednesday after I/O registration we first went to China town, not the touristy street but one of the parallel streets where you have all the supermarkets selling weird stuff, like all kinds of dried products from mushrooms to lizards, sea cucumbers and deer penises.

We then went up to Coit Tower and down the stairs to one of our favourite "hidden" places in SF, a garden full of different flowers and inhabited by several humming birds.

We continued down to Pier 39 to visit the seals again before heading to the Intel Pre-I/O party.

Want to create elements to access Google's discovery-based APIs?

"There's an element for that."
(Everyone at the I/O Polymer Session)

;)

Very much WIP, but I started creating a Polymer element that automatically generates Polymer elements for discovery-based APIs (i.e. most Google APIs + cloud endpoints) to access the API declaratively. Simple GET requests working already :)

Preliminary docs:
https://scarygami.github.io/discovery-api-elements/components/discovery-api-elements/
Demo:
https://scarygami.github.io/discovery-api-elements/components/discovery-api-elements/demo/

While the demo doesn't look impressive, I really like the source code for it, which is just a bit of HTML with essentially no JS to write:
https://github.com/Scarygami/discovery-api-elements/blob/master/demo/demo-app.html

This loads the Client library and creates elements for each api method on the fly:
<discovery-api-elements name="plus" version="v1"></discovery-api-elements>

This will do the actual API request and store the result in `data`:
<plus-activities-list
    user-id="+GerwinSturm"
    collection="public"
    response="{{data}}"
    auto></plus-activities-list>

This uses the data to display a list of posts as soon as data is available:
<template is="dom-repeat" items="[[data.items]]">
    <p>[[item.title]]</p>
</template>

Now that I know that this approach actually works I will go ahead and clean-up and complete the functionality of the project. As a first step I will probably create some behaviors for the common methods/properties that each API method will need.

I've updated my picasa-album element to Polymer 1.0

https://github.com/Scarygami/picasa-album

As a proof-of-concept following the discussion on my blog post about developing with Google Photos yesterday [1] the element now also allows you to specify a "tag" instead of an album ID. Apparently the automatic image recognition features of Google Photos generate hidden tags for the photos that can be searched via the Picasa API (even though they don't appear anywhere visibly otherwise)  [2]

Here an example searching for the tag "sunset" in my public photos:

So at least we have some programmatic access to "new" features in Google Photos. Note that this feature has probably been available for a while, but it never occured to me to test it.

Everything is growing nicely in our garden (including grass and weeds). We had our first bigger strawberry harvest with many more on their way, a first taste of sugar snap peas and I especially like our orange cauliflower :)

PS. It seems sharing albums from the mobile photos app only works via link. When sharing from a desktop browser you still get the album properly included in Google+

I still have a few posts lined up for this SF/IO collection, since I didn't get around to post all the photos with I/O keeping me busy.

And then I will have several posts in my "Code, code, code..." collection as I dive deeper into some of the I/O announcements.

"It is about the people."
Allen Firstenberg, 2015

I probably mentioned this on several occasions already, but this phrase really is the most important part of I/O for me (or any other event for that matter).

Yes, the announcements are nice, and the setup is amazing, but you can catch most of this remotely.

Yes, the showcase areas have amazing things to try out, but mostly you find yourself queueing up for a while until you actually get to try them.

But nothing can replace the direct contact and insightful conversations with a multitude of developers (both Googlers and Non-Googlers) from all over the world.

With that I want to thank all the ones who found time to talk with me, even though I'm very sorry to say that I might not remember your face or name next time we meet (like that one Norwegian guy, you know who you are :P), I have a... more »

And now it's time to say goodbye...

And just like that... things started to wind down. The displays closed. The work crews arrived to get ready for the next conference. Farewells were bid to friends whom we wouldn't see for another year, perhaps. Pictures were taken.

I've said many times that Google I/O isn't about the technology. It isn't about the sessions, or presentations, or displays.

It is about the people.

The Google engineers who we meet who help make the tools we use. The DevRel people who are there to help us learn The GDEs and GDGs who become our daily contact. The project managers and executives who drive the company, as a whole, forward with their visions. The guy you sit down to have lunch with.

+Gerwin Sturm and +Anna Kastlunger have become wonderful friends over the nearly five years we've known each other. I finally met Gerwin for the first time at I/O 2012, and still can't pronounce his name correctly. I met Anna a year later at I/O 2013. I follow the progress of their garden through the year. Perhaps this will be the year I get to Europe, and I hope to visit them while there. But till then... it is farewell for now.

This ends my semi-live notes from #io15. I'll have a few more posts over the next few days and weeks as I write longer notes about things, or watch the video from some of the sessions I couldn't make. I want to thank all of you who followed from home or from an I/O Extended event, commented, challenged, and asked questions. I hope you got a flavor of what the I/O experience was like. My thanks, especially, to +Linda Lawton, who couldn't make it to I/O this year but covered it from home for the +Google Developer Experts page.

Hope to see you at I/O 2016.___"It is about the people."

And thank you +Allen Firstenberg for sharing the pain (and fun) we (willingly) have to go through with some of the Google products :)

I/O Day 2

Polymer

The main event for me personally on the second day of I/O was the big Polymer session with the official release of 1.0. (1)

With this release the performance compared to 0.5 has improved significantly across all browsers making Polymer actually feasible in a production environment.

Many people often have concerns with new tools by Google that they might be discontinued because they aren't used inside of Google either. The examples of the new Google Translate community, the Santa Tracker and the Google I/O Web App might not convince those people that this is not the case here since they are relatively small projects with small audience, but one of the announcements in this talk was that YouTube is actually working on a new UI using Polymer.

There are also a couple of bigger external partners who are already using Polymer now.

Maybe the coolest announcement of the talk was that there's going to be a Polymer Summit in September, which for a change is in Europe, Amsterdam to be exact, meaning I can get there more easily, and I will definitely try to attend. (2)

ATAP

ATAP has been doing some pretty cool stuff, innovating the way we interact with devices, and while I don't expect anything of this being available in any devices soon (especially in Europe) it is amazing to see them pushing the boundaries of what is possible. (3)

After hours

With the GDEs being an active part of I/O this year (which was a great experience as I wrote about yesterday) we also got the unique possibility to join the Googlers at their After-I/O-Party. In addition to having lots of food and an open bar, this also allowed to connect with Googlers and GDEs in a much more relaxed atmosphere, with no one having any obligations (for now).

Thanks to everyone who made this event possible, it's been great, looking forward to the next time :)
