Vorwort zu "The Last Witchfinder" - rescheduled to Nov 142012-11-14 19:00:004

Vorwort17Ein Buch - sechs Geschichten. Was dabei herauskommt?

Now playing: Firewatch

I really enjoyed this game. The scenery is beautiful, the dialogues are witty and engaging, the story is interesting and suspenseful, and there's enough to explore outside of the story as well.

My two main complaints about the game:
- The unnecessary crosshair that can't be disabled and ruins the looks (and the screenshots)
- The short length. I wouldn't have minded playing through all the days that were skipped in the story, actually doing the job I was there to do.

I See... People

To get a better understanding of the new Google People API I created a small (of course Polymer-based) demo, since playing around with the API Explorer can be cumbersome.

https://scarygami.github.io/people-api-demo/

This demo will fetch one "page" of results from the people.connections.list method and display the raw JSON for each contact.

You can then click on "load full data" to fetch the rest of the contact information via people.get for each contact.

In this blogpost you'll find some of my takeaways from what I've seen so far.

TLDR:
Great replacement for the old Contacts API, not really adding much value when working with Google+ contacts.

Interesting... will have to investigate more tomorrow...

Google now has a dedicated People API which should make working with user profiles easier as up til now you had to call both the Google+ and Contacts info to get everything you wanted. This also is set to supersede the Contacts API in the future.___Interesting... will have to investigate more tomorrow...

Now playing: The Witness

This game basically jumped at me when I opened Steam the other day. I knew immediately without actually reading too much about it, that this game would be for me and I wasn't disappointed.

Which starts of a as a sequence of simple maze puzzles, soon turns into more with the puzzles becoming more diverse and challenging.

And then you start discovering all the puzzles you walked by without noticing them at first... and (without hopefully spoiling too much) end up sitting around for one hour to solve one particular puzzle that simply can't be solved any faster than that.

If you enjoy puzzle games like The Talos Principle, Portal, Myst or Rhem, definitely give this one a try. I think I have solved all of the major puzzles and a lot of the side-puzzles by now, but there is probably still a lot of things I've missed.

Polymer in a corporate network
(a.k.a. The Things You Do For Money)

Working as a developer in a non-tech company can be challenging since usually the corporate IT infrastructure and regulations aren't designed for developer tasks but for day-to-day office business. So when I took over some new responsibilities at work and had the chance to finally include Polymer in some internal web projects (with the biggest stopping point of IE8 finally gone) I had some hurdles to overcome to make use of the full Polymer-related tool chain I've come to love for my private projects.

This is going to be interesting. The closest hotels are like 45 minutes walking distance away. Reserved a room at the Hampton Inn for now, just in case :)

Exciting news: we’re only 18 weeks away from Google I/O! 2016 is going to be a special year for us -- we held our first developer day 10 years ago at the Googleplex. To celebrate our 10th anniversary of developer gatherings, we’ll be hosting I/O in our backyard at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA from May 18th - 20th. We’ll have 3 full days together to dive deep into developer content, code labs, and more. If you can’t make it in person, you can still join us via I/O Live and through an I/O Extended event in your local community. Stay tuned to #io16 and +GoogleDevelopers in the coming weeks for more details.___This is going to be interesting. The closest hotels are like 45 minutes walking distance away. I spent a lot of my Christmas vacation time to create a photo book for our trip to the Galapagos islands in 2014.

The hardest part was selecting some of the many great photos we have, so I wouldn't need a full book for each single day, but it was totally worth it :)

You can find the full collection including all those that didn't make it into the book in this collection with travel reports:

Google Photos sharing has become a frickin mess.

Why in the world would you display the profile photos of people who joined an album, that was just shared for public viewing? They can't add/contribute anything to the album!! And there's no way for an album owner to hide/remove/adjust the list...

Once you figured out the mess you made, I might consider using Google Photos again, until then I'll be back to other photo platforms.

PS. Yes, I'm aware of the feedback option, and yes I used it, but this is just too bad of a mess to let it go by quietly.

Experimenting with photos I needed a quick way to get image data into my wep app, so I created a Polymer element for that :)

`user-media` is a type extension for the HTML5 video tag, that requests and displays a webcam stream and allows capturing the current frame, so that getting image data is as simple as including

<video is="user-media" capture-mode></video>

on a webpage and then calling the capture method on that element to get a Data URI.

Offline Location History?

I always thought location history would only be recorded while being online, but I've been tracking some of our hikes and tours via "My Tracks" while being completely offline and all of this information is now in my Google Maps timeline without doing anything extra, which I think is awesome since that way I have a far more accurate record of our vacation.

Pinging my geo-export +David Schmidt to see if he knows more about this :)

Colombia 2015 - The Fruits of Colombia

Tasting as many different fruits as possible was one of our main goals for visiting Colombia.

Guanabana / Soursop / Annona muricata

Our favourite fruit ever since we first tasted it on the Seychelles. It has a very unique sweet and sour taste. The pulp is white and has a lot of inedible black seeds. Unfortunately you can hardly get them in Austria, and then only for ridiculous prices, so we have to make the most of it while we are here.
At the Laguna de Sonso we were allowed to take on fruit fresh from the tree with us. It was still hard and stayed good for almost a week. As soon as the fruits get soft you have to use them in a couple of days before they get bad, which is impossible due to the size of the fruits.

Charichuelo / Garcinia madruno

It's related to mangosteens and also is similar in taste and consistency, so definitely not the worst fruit to try. We had never heard of them before getting them offered at the market. Funnily no one we met seemed to had heard of it either.

Chontaduro / Palm peaches / Bactris gasipaes

We didn't taste those raw, but got them cooked with some salt, which is the usual way to eat them. They are more a vegetable than a fruit, comparable to potatoes or maybe chestnuts.

Guayaba / Guava / Psidium guajava

Taste good, not much more to say about it.

Banana / Musa

Not the most unusual fruit we tried, but the wide variety and freshness of the bananas here can't be compared to what we get in Austria.

Platano / Plantain / Musa

More frequently than bananas you will encounter plantain in Colombia, both the unripe fruits in savoury form and the ripe fruits as dessert. Patacones, which are pressed, deep-fried plantains, are the most common side dish you will get with Colombian meals.

Tomate de arbol / Tree tomato / Tamarillo / Cyphomandra betacea

The experience somehow reminded me of eating Kiwi, but with a different, unique taste.

Aguacate / Avocado / Persea americana

Another "usual" fruit, but we needed something to eat for lunch with some bread. They are much bigger but the taste is not as intense compared to the ones we get in Austria.

Pitahaya / Strawberry pear / Hylocereus

The yellow fruits they have here are much better than the pink variant we have tried before. A little bit sweet, a little bit sour, but not a very intense taste.

Lulo / Naranjilla / Solanum quitoense

They are like very sour tomatoes, but taste rather good. They are better if prepared as juice or milk shake with some sugar though.

Maracuya / Passionfruit / Passiflora edulis

Unfortunately the first fruit we got wasn't quite ripe yet, so it was mostly sour but without the delicious passionfruit taste. We had more luck with the second fruit which was nicely yellow all over. The most delicious passionfruit we tasted had a red skin.

Jaboticaba / Myrciaria cauliflora

At the top of the Nirvana Reserve they had a Jaboticaba tree with lots of ripe fruits and we were allowed to take some with us. You are not supposed to eat the hull (and it doesn't taste great anyway) but you can squeeze the fruit open between the teeth and suck out the delicous sweet and sour pulp. The taste can probably be best compared with grapes, but is still very unique.

Curuba / Banana Passionfruit / Passiflora mollissima

This longish version of a passionfruit is sweeter and less intense than the round ones but has a pleasant texture.

Zapote / Chupa-Chupa / Quararibea cordata

Tastes a little bit like melons and/or pumpkins and has very fibruos pulp sticking to big seeds.

Mango / Mangifera indica

I only like Mangoes when they are really ripe, fresh from the tree, and not like the ones we usually get in Austria, picked unripe and left to ripen on the shelf.

Mamoncillo / Honeyberry / Melicoccus bijugatus

The effort to eat those fruits might be relatively big compared to how little pulp you get by sucking on the big seeds , but they still taste nicely sweet, so don't let this stop you from trying a few.

Archucha / Caigua / Cyclanthera pedata

We've been growing those in our garden for a few years now, but the ones you get here are so huge that it's actually possible to fill them, which gives them the most common name people seem to know it by here "Pepino de rellenar" (cucumber for filling).

Ciruelo / Mirabelle plum / Prunus domestica

Those fruits seem to be closely related to the wild plums we get in Austria (Kriecherl). Ours taste better though.

Níspero / Sapodilla / Manilkara zapota

The first one we got wasn't ripe yet, which made it inedibly astringent. We tried a ripe, very soft one at the market. It was mainly sweet like honey with a little bit of apple/pear taste.

Feijoa / Acca sellowiana

Related to guavas, they are smaller and less intense in taste, but still taste good.

Cherimoya / Annona cherimola

Didn't like the taste, we'll stick with Guanabana / Soursop from the same family.

Cacao / Theobroma cacao

While most people know the usual product made from cacao, many probably haven't tried the cacao fruit itself. It has white soft sweet pulp around the cacao beans, but you have to be careful not to eat the brownish pulp in between which doesn't taste so good.

Yacón / Smallanthus sonchifolius

Not really a fruit since it's actually a root, but it tastes sweet, a little bit like pears.

Borojó / Alibertia patinoi

You don't get to buy those fruits in a way you could eat them directly. They are sold in small bags when they are very soft, almost liquid already, and are used for juice or jam. We tried some fresh Borojó milkshake from a street vendor which tasted a little bit like chocolate milk.

Pomarrosa / Malay apple / Syzygium malaccense

Doesn't taste like much and is a little by astringent.

Piña / Pineapple / Ananas comosus

Yes, you can get pineapples all around the world, but probably nowhere they will be as fresh, sweet and juicy as they are in Colombia. They also have several different variants but we never tried/bought some since we got pineapples at breakfast every day.

Granadilla / Passiflora ligularis

Another passionfruit variant they regularly had at breakfast but compared to Maracuyas they taste like nothing.

Mora / Blackberry / Rubus

They might be called blackberries but the species of Rubus they have here didn't taste good at all compared to the ones we know.

Jatobá / West Indian locust / Stinking toe / Hymenaea courbaril

We didn't notice the bad smell that gave those fruit the "Stinking toe" nickname (but the smells on the market were overwhelming already), the taste of the raw fruit wasn't really that good and left a sticky, dusty feel in the mouth. Supposedly they get better when you mix them with milk as a drink.

Guama / Ice cream bean / Inga edulis

Probably the most unique fruit we tried so far. From the outside they look like big bean pods, on the inside the "beans" are embedded in white pulp that you can eat. Unique taste, definitely worth a try.

Guanabana / Sauersack / Annona muricata

Chontaduro / Palmpfirsiche / Bactris gasipaes

Guayaba / Guave / Psidium guajava

Aguacate / Avocado / Persea americana

Lulo / Naranjilla / Solanum quitoense

Maracuya / Maracuja / Passiflora edulis

Curuba / Bananen-Granadilla / Passiflora mollissima

Zapote / Chupa-Chupa / Quararibea cordata

Mamoncillo / Honigbeere / Melicoccus bijugatus

Archucha / Inkagurke / Cyclanthera pedata

Ciruelo / Kriecherl / Prunus domestica

Cacao / Kakao / Theobroma cacao

Pomarrosa / Apfeljambuse / Syzygium malaccense

Guama / Inga / Inga edulis

Colombia 2015 - Day 18-19 (2015-11-17/18) - Leaving Colombia

Before leaving for the airport we went on a final mission to buy some fruits and root vegetables to bring home to Austria. Then in the evening Anna left for Vienna via Amsterdam and I took a flight to San Francisco via Panama early the next morning.

Colombia 2015 - Day 17 (2015-11-16) - Iguanas at the Zoo

After the Origami breakfast we spend a nice day at the zoo with some of our new friends. While it had been cloudy and rainy the first time we visited the zoo, it was sunny this time, which made the iguanas come out of their hiding holes. They seem to be living wildly all over the zoo which is understandable considering the availability of free food.

Colombia 2015 - Day 14-17 (2015-11-13/14/15/16) - Origami Convention

From Friday evening to Monday morning we attended the Origami Colombia Convention in Cali. Besides the exhibition and Origami classes you will find at any Origami convention there was some cultural program and some fun activities, like Chocogami:
There's a brand of chocolate in Colombia that comes with a sticker depicting something from nature (bird, mammal, plant, landscape, ...). The task was to use the chocolate wrapping to fold whatever the sticker shows you, and most of the results were astonishing.

The most interesting of the convention (at least for me) were the blind folders who took part and gave classes like anyone else, and were better folders than many others there.

Because the meeting place was only available during the day we met up for dinner and more folding at different restaurants each evening and also went to a Salsa club one night. On Monday morning we had a final breakfast together to conclude the convention.

Kolumbien 2015 - Tag 14-17 (13/14/15/16.11.2015) - Origami Treffen

Colombia 2015 - Day 13 (2015-11-12) - La Ermita & Dance Festival

After the adventures and exciting days we had this was a more quiet day. We went for a stroll close to the hotel mostly in the area around the Ermita church and found a huge supermarket to buy some snacks for lunch. Compared to the other days (on weekends) we had been out in Cali before, the streets were now full with vendors selling all kinds of stuff from their carts, including movies on USB sticks. We also walked around the Jorge Isaacs park where the Cali dance festival was currently happening.

In the evening we found one of the few restaurants in Colombia that wasn't live-streaming the football match between Colombia and Chile and had some nice dinner.

Kolumbien 2015 - Tag 13 (12.11.2015) - La Ermita & Tanzfestival

Colombia 2015 - Day 12 (2015-11-11) - Puracé

We left Popayán to drive up into the mountains to the small village of Puracé and continued further up to the "Rock of the Condor" at about 3300 meters above the sea. There our local guide put up some rotten meat to try to attract a condor, the national bird of Colombia. While waiting we admired the nature around us, with wild orchids growing inside of bromelias on the trees. Unfortunately the condor decided to stay away but several of his smaller relatives, i.e. vultures, and some caracaras came instead.

At the end of the trip we came to a huge area of volcanic springs with hot water bubbling out of the ground everywhere and the sulphur colouring the rocks and plants in a bright yellow. Despite the smell it was an amazing experience.

The way back to Cali in the evening was long and uneventful.

Colombia 2015 - Day 11 (2015-11-10) - Silvia & Popayán

Leaving in the morning again, our destination this day was Silvia, in the south, where the indigenous market is being held by the Guambiano every Tuesday. While not having the biggest variety (we had expected more) we still got to try some new fruits. We continued to visit two Viveros (plant nurseries) which were quite different from what we have in Austria, and also made a small stop at the market of Popayán.

Popayán definitely deserves its nickname "White City" with its colonial architecture and many white churches. At one place in the center they were advertising Yacon and Jaboticaba as natural remedy, which was interesting since hardly anybody we had met so far knew about Yacon even though we saw it growing everywhere in the wild.

So yeah... the leafcutter ants were fascinating... but this is still a strange automatic compilation of them with some random shots of our last day in/travel away from Colombia.

Leaving early on another tour with Julio from Cali Tours (https://www.facebook.com/Cali-Tours-1617987561767805/) we first drove through the mountains to Córdoba. From there the only way to reach San Cipriano is via rails, and with no trains in operation the locals have invented Brujitas, i.e. small wooden motorcycle-driven railway vehicles. The ride was quite an adventure, going at high speed through the beautiful nature over sometimes rather big bumps in the rails.

From San Cipriano, a small town in the middle of nowhere, we continued on foot into the jungle to reach some beautiful bathing spots with crystal-clear water and amazing waterfalls. We had some lunch in San Cipriano before going back via Brujita.

On the way back through the mountains Julio's car started overheating so we had to wait at a rest stop for a service car. It was quite nice there though with a good restaurant as well as hummingbirds and other birds to watch. We eventually got back to the hotel with a cab.

Kolumbien 2015 - Tag 10 (09.11.2015) - San Cipriano

Changing billing accounts

Having to maintain separate billing accounts for each of my projects that needed it was a major annoyance for me, especially when it came to updating the credit card information on all those billing accounts separately.

Not sure how long this has been around now but at least in the newest iteration of the Google Developers Console [1] you can easily change the billing account for projects, by going through the billing accounts and moving the linked projects to another billing account. Took me just a few minutes to consolidate all my projects into one billing account and remove the old billing accounts.
