The linux bash environment that just arrived on Windows 10 with the mega anniversary update, might just be the solution for a lot of problems you could run into while developing on a windows machine.

No searching around to get all the setup files you need for git with a cygwin or mingw terminal, node and npm, python, and whatever other tools you might need, and then struggling to make them all work in the Windows environment.

Just enable the shell, install everything you need with some simple apt-get and npm commands, and you are all set to go in a couple of minutes.

Lao is a fun language to learn.

The only consonants that don't come in a multitude of indistinguishable tones (at least for a western ear) are j, y and A(!!).

When I heard that Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman released a new album I was excited... until I actually listened to the album.

Switching through the album felt like switching through the soundtrack of the musical Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires), which is an awesome musical with awesome songs. That wouldn't be a problem since Steinman has already re-used lots of his previous works in Tanz der Vampire.

The real issue with the album is that Meat Loaf has totally lost his voice. It feels awful to listen to him... back to listening some of his old works to get the terrible voice out of my head...

Sneak peek - Polycasting

I'm currently working on a set of Polymer elements to make developing both Chrome Sender Apps and Custom Receivers for Google Cast as easy as possible.

The elements are very much pre-alpha at the moment, but my scary-cast-sender can already start and connect to a scary-cast-receiver running on Chromecast.

https://github.com/Scarygami/scary-cast-sender
https://github.com/Scarygami/scary-cast-receiver

After properly implementing all the details of session management (which can be quite a hassle with Google Cast...) I'll move on to some simple message passing and then work my way through the Google Cast API stack, trying to keep to Google Cast UI/UX Guidelines as good as possible.

Stay tuned for this to develop :)

No Man's Sky - Day 17

I have walked the world, beheld its wonders... °

Not finding any hints near the portal, I decided to leave my ship as a marker and go off in the direction indicated by the portal, which happened to be in the direction of the rising sun.

Following this direction always keeping the marker of my ship behind me, I travelled for several days, learning about the language and the history of the Vy'keen, finding abandoned buildings and weird rock structures.

I found some interesting monoliths that were different from the others, and seemed to be linked to the portal in some way, having a similar style, and teaching me some words of the Atlas language in addition of Vy'keen. I started to collect the gifts received from these and other monoliths, in the hope they will allow me to open the portal.

By then my navigator started to fail, with the displayed distance to my ship getting smaller, even though I was still walking away from it. Apparently it thought the quickest way to get back to my ship would be to drill a tunnel through the planet. Ignoring this problem for now, I continued roughly in the direction I originally intended to.

It must have been when I was about half-way around the world, that the navigator got completely unreliable, pretending I could be at my ship in just one hour and constantly changing the direction I should go to reach it. I really would have loved to have a proper compass then. Instead I waited for the morning sun to show me the right direction, and discovered a planet that I could follow easily during day and night.

After endless hours my path brought me back to my ship and the portal, having travelled once around the whole planet. But none of my efforts enabled me to open and use the portal.

I might just give up for now, leave this planet behind and try again another day on another planet...

No Man's Sky - Day 12

Found a Portal!

No idea where it leads or how to even open it, but it's sure different from anything I've seen so far on my long travels through the universe.

The planet has nothing much else, and the sentinels are a real pest here. But the waters are nice.

Left my ship near the portal to find my way back to it. Going to investigate on foot, to see if I can find any hints about the portal.

No Man's Sky - Day 8

Came across a planet with caves filled with Vortex Cubes. I think I might stay here for a while, get rich, improve my Exosuit and buy a better ship. Maybe learn some Korvax along the way.

It get's a little bit hot during the day, but you can always jump into the nice reddish waters to cool down. And there are some huge dinosaurs roaming the lands, but nothing I couldn't run away or hide from.

Might have left my ship alone too long though, since it decided to leave without me... or have I left the keys in the ignition?

PolymerCubed

I've recently started using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services for reporting purposes at work, and while querying the cubes worked great, the visualization options were rather unsatisfactory, especially when it came to building web-based dashboards.

And while there are several vendors offering solutions in this area, I decided to give it a try myself and started creating a suite of Polymer elements.

A recipe for Zwetschgenkuchen (zwetschgen/damson/plum cake), since we just harvested ours.

The most difficult part about this recipe was trying to figure out what the correct English word for Zwetschge is, only to discover that Zwetschge seems to be the only word used in English for this fruit as well.

It's a kind of plum that's very common in Austria. It looks similar to damsons, but apparently has very different properties.

Jumping on the hype train (and yes, I'm 37 and having fun playing Pokémon Go when I have the time, deal with it) I've created a Polymer element to cover all your needs (or at least some...) for building websites with lists, stats-pages, tips and tricks, and a multitude of other things concerning Pokémon Go (or the first generation of Pokémon in general).

For example just include <poke-icon name="Dratini"></poke-icon> and you have a lovely baby dragon displayed wherever you want it.

Only small icons at the moment. If you have a source for SVG images of all the Pokémon, I'd love to hear about it :)

Recipe is essentially the same as my recipe for mushroom cream soup, except with cauliflower instead of mushrooms: https://plus.google.com/+GerwinSturm/posts/Ke6WtJ4QgAA

scary-elements

As I mentioned before I wanted to put all of my Polymer elements (all the useful ones at least) together in a collection.

To give them a proper home I have now adapted the Polymer Element Catalog (https://github.com/Polymer/polymer-element-catalog) for my needs, to have all the docs in one place:

https://scary-elements.firebaseapp.com/

More elements will be added whenever I develop something I consider useful and stable enough for wider usage.

discovery-check v2.1
https://discovery-check.firebaseapp.com/

After a total rewrite of my discovery-check tool earlier this year [1], I spend some time after I/O to integrate some of the new features announced to improve the site even further.

I now have a cron job using Node.js in the App Engine Flexible Environment [2] using the new Firebase SDK [3], so no more missed diffs if no-one checks the APIs manually.

Source code: https://github.com/Scarygami/discovery-check/tree/master/server-task

The web-frontend now makes use of the app structure, elements and tools suggested by the Polymer App Toolbox [4], with an app-shell, lazy-loading of fragments and a service-worker generated during the `polymer build` process for offline-support.

Can't make use of the full PRPL pattern [5] just yet, because Firebase hosting doesn't support HTTP/2 just yet, but I might try uploading it to App Engine with HTTP/2 Server push enabled to test the difference in performance.
