Deprecation of web hosting in Drive

Last year, we announced last year the deprecation of Google Drive web hosting for users and developers, and that the service will be shut down on August 31, 2016. Marking up the world with Google's beacon platform

Earlier this year, Amsterdam began deploying a new, open beacon network using Google’s beacon platform (http://goo.gl/wXXFQz). This platform allows cities like Amsterdam to build a powerful beacon networks, associating data with beacons and making them available for all developers to use, unlocking powerful new proximity-based experiences for users.

You can use the beacon network in Amsterdam by following our codelab (http://goo.gl/psDfJN) with the network's guide (http://goo.gl/AE2Pof), and join the network’s Google Group https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/amsterdam-open-beacon-network.

New metrics on Hangouts and changes to Google+ activity metrics

We are pleased to announce that new metrics on Google Hangouts usage are available via the Google Apps Admin SDK's Reports API. These new metrics help track calls and length by platform. In addition, a number of Google+ components and integrations (i.e., Hangouts, YouTube Comments, Photos) have been unbundled from the core Google+ product, meaning the new metrics reflect users of Google+ only. These changes began rolling out to all Google Apps domains last week. Find out more:

Memory for billions

More users means more device types and operating systems. Today’s tip is a best practice to help you keep pace with an increasing variety of device specifications for billions of users:

On Android, adjust your memory footprint dynamically to ensure compatibility across devices with different RAM configurations - methods such as isLowRamDevice() and getMemoryClass() help determine memory constraints at runtime and allow you to use lower resolution images, for example, on low memory devices.

We're happy to announce there is now a dedicated AngularDart team.

This is great news for users of all three flavors of Angular 2.

TypeScript and JavaScript developers will be able to focus on a single language in which they are already experts, making it easier to contribute patches and get reviews. Read more here: http://goo.gl/kRJ0UI

Dart developers will enjoy an increased rate of improvement, including features that make the most of Dart's capabilities. Dart developers can also look forward to a set of pure-Dart Material Design components that Google uses in production. Read more here: http://goo.gl/iYv4Iv

Conserving data for billions

Data is expensive, so to retain data-sensitive users (like those on pre-paid plans) you need to optimize when and how your app or site uses data. Today we bring you a tip on benchmarking and reducing your data use for billions of users:

Today, we're extending the Gmail API with new endpoints for managing settings like filters, forwarding addresses & auto-forwarding, IMAP & POP settings, send-as aliases, signatures, and the vacation responder. This means developers will have now the ability to: Retrieve and update signatures for send-as aliases, configure forwarding to external addresses, use HTML in vacation messages, and manipulate settings for gmail.com accounts. Build architecture now that allows localizing later - tips for building for billions on Android and Web:

Building content for billions

Have big international ambitions for your business? Even if you’re just starting out, there’s a lot you can do now to set your content up to support global users and commerce when you’re ready. Today’s blog post (http://goo.gl/yItDd4) will walk you through the full list, but to get you started, here’s a tip on building content for billions of users:

Design to localize (eventually). On Android, building text-holding elements with more space than necessary for your language will save time as you expand to new languages. On the Web, plan to use a single language for content and navigation, and keep content for each language on separate URLs. Setting up your architecture to support this now will save you re-working later.

This is the first of five posts we’re sharing on how to build Android and Web products for billions of users. Check out our full set of resources and tips at developers.google.com/billions.___Build architecture now that allows localizing later - tips for building for billions on Android and Web:
