Reduce battery consumption for billions

Battery life is precious on low-cost phones and over intermittent power supplies. Today’s tip offers best practices to reduce battery consumption on Android and the Web for billions of users:

First, understand your app or site’s battery consumption using Battery Historian and Batterystats (walkthrough - https://goo.gl/M0Vqbl). Then, further conserve battery by reducing user actions required to access your content, such as detailed logins, long menus, or multiple sub-pages, to keep things lean.

On the Web and with native apps, you can usually reduce battery consumption by checking for and eliminating unused or duplicative network requests, content reflows, and limiting ‘expensive’ animations or sensor use. Periodic audits of those functionalities helps build a battery-efficient experience.

Does your app have personal content? Help your users find it directly from the Google app for Android, even when they’re offline.

We’ve opened up early access to our updated Android API for Firebase App Indexing, with new functionality to index personal content from your app.

Content from your app can then appear for relevant queries in the Google app on Android in the new “In Apps” tab, or as an autocomplete suggestion: http://goo.gl/fk1STx

Searching personal results happens entirely on users’ phones, so they can search even when not connected to WiFi or cellular network.

We’re starting with an initial set of apps, and will continue expanding over the coming months. If you’re interested in early access, let us know at http://g.co/appindexing/personal.

Increased account security via OAuth 2.0 token revocation

Late last year, we announced a planned change https://goo.gl/FHWsW4 to our security policy, whereby OAuth 2.0 tokens would be revoked when a user's password was changed. We later decided not to move forward https://goo.gl/jd8HWI with this change for Apps customers and arrived at a less impactful update, deciding to limit its application to mail scopes only and to exclude Google Apps Script tokens.

This updated policy is now ready to be rolled out, taking effect on October 5, 2016. We encourage developers to make any necessary changes to their apps to handle invalid tokens as a result of this policy implementation.

Setting Expectations for Accessing User Data via OAuth

Google knows that our users love using third-party applications, and we recognize that our users often want to share some data with these applications in order to derive the most benefit. While we want to facilitate this open and stimulating dynamic between developers and our users, the privacy and security of our users’ data is very important to us. We’ve always expected developers to treat Google user data with transparency and concern for user choice, and recently we published expanded policy guidelines for developers who wish to access Google user data using our API services to make our requirements more accessible to everyone. We hope this guidance will help developers and Google users interact in a manner that is informed and consistent with user expectations.

Your emails, optimized for every screen with responsive design

Later this month, you’ll be able to use CSS media queries with Gmail to ensure that your message is formatted the way you intended, whether it's viewed on a computer, a phone in portrait mode, or a tablet in landscape mode. You’ll be able to change styles based on width, rotation, and resolution, allowing for more responsive formatting to optimize your email for every device.

You can find the full list of supported CSS rules in the developer documentation (https://developers.google.com/gmail/design/css). We hope this reference helps you create more feature-rich, responsive email for users. Happy formatting!

We are pleased to announce that new metrics on Google Hangouts usage are available via the Google Apps Admin SDK's Reports API. These new metrics help track calls and length by platform. In addition, a number of Google+ components and integrations (i.e., Hangouts, YouTube Comments, Photos) have been unbundled from the core Google+ product, meaning the new metrics reflect users of Google+ only. These changes began rolling out to all Google Apps domains last week. Find out more:

Announcing Android add-ons for Docs and Sheets

We’re excited to introduce Android add-ons for Docs and Sheets, a new way for users to get more work done, from anywhere—whether it’s readying a contract for an e-signature or pulling in CRM data on a tablet for some quick analysis. Android add-ons give developers a chance to build innovative integrations and reach Docs and Sheets users around the world.

They’re basically Android apps that connect with Google Apps Script projects on the server-side, allowing them to access and manipulate data from Google Docs or Sheets using standard Apps Script techniques. Android add-ons are available today as a developer preview. Find out more at http://goo.gl/409Y6p___

Memory for billions

More users means more device types and operating systems. Today’s tip is a best practice to help you keep pace with an increasing variety of device specifications for billions of users:

On Android, adjust your memory footprint dynamically to ensure compatibility across devices with different RAM configurations - methods such as isLowRamDevice() and getMemoryClass() help determine memory constraints at runtime and allow you to use lower resolution images, for example, on low memory devices.

This is the fourth of five weekly posts we’re sharing on how to build Android and Web products for billions of users. Check out our full lists resources at g.co/dev/billions.

We're happy to announce there is now a dedicated AngularDart team.

This is great news for users of all three flavors of Angular 2.

TypeScript and JavaScript developers will be able to focus on a single language in which they are already experts, making it easier to contribute patches and get reviews. Read more here: http://goo.gl/kRJ0UI

Dart developers will enjoy an increased rate of improvement, including features that make the most of Dart's capabilities. Dart developers can also look forward to a set of pure-Dart Material Design components that Google uses in production. Read more here: http://goo.gl/iYv4Iv
