As we head into a lame duck session in Congress and debates over the "Fiscal Cliff" continue, we wanted to look at the data to see what issues the deciding swing states were most interested in over the past three presidential election cycles.
While the "purple" states have been consistent on some of the key issues, there have been dynamic shifts in "national debt," "tax cuts," and the "unemployment rate."

The +Google Consumer Surveys team worked throughout the 2012 campaign season to poll voters on issues, candidates and debates. Now a few polling experts have weighed on how accurate their results are—turns out, very!
Nate Silver of NYT’s FiveThiryEight blog—the "wizard" of statistical polling data—concluded that Google Consumer Surveys was the #1 most accurate poll online and the #2 most accurate poll overall, surpassing many well-established and recognized traditional polls. The Pew Research Center also evaluated the tool in detail and said it will likely be an important addition to the research tool kit available to pollsters.

In the two weeks leading up to the election, the +Google Voter Information Tool and the Civic Information API were used to find voter information like polling places, sample ballots, early voting sites, and voter ID requirements.
Now that the dust has settled, we wanted to share a few stats:
+ 23 million voter information queries were served across our sites and third-party apps.
+ Over 100 developers built apps using the API including the League of Women Voters, Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, and AT&T.
+ More than 600 sites embedded our tool including CNN, the Huffington Post, and both the Democratic and Republican Congressional Campaign Committees.
