Ballynafagh Lake, Co Kildare, Ireland

Just recently discovered this small lake close to my house. I had shot at the nearby ruined church of the same name, but never ventured to the lake.  For a first time visit, I got lucky with the sunset.

Aashleagh Falls Creation Wars edits

Thanks everyone for the feedback on the photo, it is much appreciated and really interesting to get some different views.
+Mason Marsh I have posted the colour version for comparison - it is not a full edit but close enough.

What I really wanted to capture in the photo was the curved flow of the water in the foreground.  I could see the path of the bubbles, so I composed to try and get a sweeping curve.  The photo was taking early evening but was quite overcast with the heavy clouds moving in.  I chose black and white to really emphasise the movement in the water, which I think doesn't come out quite as well in colour.  I also think the colour version lacks a bit of pop or drama - there was no magic light on the day.  For me, the black and white adds a bit of drama to the photo.

For the re-edit, I took your advice and took some contrast out of the sky, particularly on the blackest cloud, but still leaving it with the dramatic effect.  I also cloned out the building and the poles in the background.  The smudge in the foreground was blurring of the grass due to the length of the exposure, so I dropped in another exposure and masked in the still grass.

Thanks for the feedback,

Greig___

Check out my friend +Ugo Cei on the wonderful The Candid Frame podcast.

I Was On The Candid Frame!

I am sure most of you know about The Candid Frame, +Ibarionex Perello's venerable podcast about photography. Over the course of more than 250 episodes, Ibarionex has interviewed about as many great photographers and industry experts.

So I had to pinch myself when I received an invitation from Ibarionex to be a guest on his show. I can say I was surprised and greatly honored by it.

Ibarionex is such a great interviewer and he asks all the right questions. You will certainly agree with me, if you listen to the podcast episode, that has just been released. We talked about travel, photographing in your own backyard, inspiration, gear, and other.

Now whether I was able to provide good answers to his great questions, you'll have to judge by yourself :-)___Check out my friend +Ugo Cei on the wonderful The Candid Frame podcast.

Hi Valerie, I have a question you might consider for the podcast.

Who would you consider as the person(s) who have had the greatest influence on your photography and why? This could be creatively in your art or professionally in your business.

Thanks and looking forward to your answer if you chose this question.

Giro D'Italia

The first of this years cycling's grand tours, the three week long, 3449.9km Giro D'Italia, held its Grande Partenza in Belfast before rolling into Dublin in day three.  I caught the action on the Quays in Dublin, 2km from the finish, just as the Sky Pro Cycling (right), Cannondale Pro Cycling (middle) and Team Giant Shimano (left) got into formation for their lead out trains for the sprint finish.  The stage was won by Marcel Kittel of Team Giant Shimano to strengthen his lead and continue in the red jersey of points leader.

Michael Matthews of the Orica GreenEDGE team survived a crash during the stage to continue into Day 4 with the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey) as the leader of the general classification.

Back from a short absence from the google+ world after a hectic few months.  Not all bad though as part of the time was spent on another amazing workshop with the great +rohan reilly shooting the best of Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland on Rohan's Causeway Coast Workshop.

I haven't shot many portraits or models so this was very much a venture into the new for me.  Shot on location at a workshop at the National Stud, Co Kildare, Ireland with my local camera club.

Please feel free to express any views or feedback.

We were working in small groups of 2s and 3s each with a model.  The other person I was working with was also of a similar experience, so we were slow getting started but soon got it to the swing of it.  I've read and attended workshops in the past, so I knew a bit but was lacking the hands on experience.  It started to rain so we dived inside the museum for 10 mins to let the shower past.  Inside, their was a small alcove with full height glass windows on both sides.  Despite the rain, there was just enough natural light coming in the windows to light the model, so I didn't use the speedlite I had with me.  In hindsight, Iprobabl... more »

Bull Island, Dublin, Ireland

Sunrise time, check, sunrise position, check, tidal times, check, ferry times .......
Not on my normal check list for a dawn shoot, but shooting outside of the main port in Dublin, I probably should have checked.  A very large ferry departed Dublin Port just as the sun was hitting the horizon, leaving the port and cutting behind the beacon in the background. Fortunately I was at longer focal length than I expected so I was able to compose the shot to avoid it.  On the plus side it created this nice little bow wave which stopped at the submerged breakwater leading all the way out to the beacon.

I purchased some Lightroom Presets from Craft and Vision recently and have started to play around with them.  I have both the sets from David duChemin and Dave Delnea and have found a couple of presets which work really well.  I particularly like the Milford Greens, the Golden Hour (both duChemin) and Custom Tones 001 through 004 (Delnea). The Golden Hour was used as a starting point for the shot below.

Isolation

First outing of the Christmas period yesterday due to the lousy weather. Headed up into the Wicklow Mountains at sunrise to the old miners village. Great views down the Glendasan River Valley to Laragh.  The early morning mountain mist was rolling off Brockagh Mountain to the left and Carnaderry to the right with just enough high clouds above it to reflect some of the light from the rising sun.  I was heading back up the valley to the car when I spied this lone tree on the ridge with the mist behind it.  Shot at 300mm on my Canon 100-400 and cropped to pano format.

My new +f-stop tilopa bag is packed and ready to go exploring (shown here with the large slope icu). All I need now is for the storm force winds and rain to pass and then I'm off into the Wicklow mountains for sunrise to take it through its paces.

Think I'll end up switching some of the smaller gear such as the remote and some filters to the top pocket. All the other pockets are empty at the moment - this bag will hold a lot of gear!

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Rathcoffey Castle, Co Kildare, Ireland

Photo from a few weeks back at the beginning of the month. I wasn't planning on going out on the evening when this was shot, but when the sun started to dip in the sky I could tell from the light it had the chance of being a good one.  It was a case of grabbing the camera and running out the door.  Always useful to a selection of local favourite places for situations just like this.

What is your photography roadmap?

The new year is soon upon us which has had me thinking over the last few weeks about the direction that my photography going.  For me, this has mainly been about a camera body upgrade which I will get into, but what is your roadmap for the future?

This could be photography style, change of business, turning pro, gear or anything related.

What started me on this were thoughts behind upgrading my camera body.  I currently shoot a Canon 550d with a Sigma 17-70  f2.8-4 as a general workhorse including street and travel and then a Sigma 10-20 f3.5-5.6 for landscape work.  I have recently added the Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 for tight landscapes and a bit of a wildlife/sport when the chance arises.

For 85% of my work, the 550d is a great camera and has served me well, however the limitations of the body mainly relate to low light performance and frame rate.  I would like better low light performance for my travel work when it is not always ideal to be carrying a tripod (although I do have a light travel tripod which I use). The better noise performance would also help by being able to bump up the ISO with the longer lens to give the necessary shutter speed for sharp shots at longer focal lengths.   I would also like a faster frame rate (currently 3.5 fps) and more focus points (currently 9).

This would lead me down the full frame route, but if I did this then I would also have to replace my wide angle and zoom lens as these are both crop factor lenses and things start getting very expensive fast even if I went for the 6D never mind the 5d MK III.

Mirrorless cameras could be an option, but for some reason I am not completely sold on this. There are some amazing mirrorless cameras about, but as with the full frame I would have to start again from scratch in terms of building up lenses etc.  That would mean I would either have sell all my existing gear or retain and carry about two different systems.

That leaves me with a new APS-C body. The 70d looks great with 19 focal points, 7 fps and good reports on low light performance. However, I am holding out for an upgrade to the 7d or a new equivalent.  The latest rumors on the spec from Canonrumors.com are 20 or 24MP, Auto-Focus system similar to the EOS 5D Mark III (61 points), 10-12fps, weather sealing , WiFi & GPS. Price is likely to be around $2000. This would tick all the boxes for me with the additional bonus of weather sealing , WiFi & GPS.  Fingers crossed this is announced in 2014! I am trying to save hard to fund this and they will fly off the shelves like hot cakes if it does happen.

Going the APS-C route would allow me to gradually replace my lenses over time, particularly the 17-70mm which I would replace with the new Sigma 24-105mm f4. My plan would also be to convert my 550d to infrared which would mean I could use my lenses with both cameras for maximum efficiencies.

What is your plan?___

I'm done with apple's podcast app as it won't let me download any podcasts. It will stream then fine but can't download them to the phone. What is the best alternative app for podcasts, paid or free?

These truly are majestic creatures. Taken at Dublin Zoo thankfully behind the glass! Real shame that soon this will be the only place we will end up seeing them.

A trip to Dublin zoo on Sunday provided this shot of this magnificent sumatran tiger. The perfect model, she gave me a 100 yard stare straight down the barrel

The Old Clare Island Ferry

This wreck is actually the old Clare Island Ferry, Rossend, which was washed ashore on Clare Island, Co Mayo, Ireland in a storm of 1993. Split into two, only the bow remains as a stark reminder of the cruel nature of sea travel when Mother Nature decides to show her full force.  The shape of the vertical struts making up the bow combined with the port hole near the middle reminded me of a the throat of a humpback whale with the porthole forming the eye.

Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop Bundle

Lots of opinion on the creative cloud subscription model, but it hard to disagree with the latest offer for both photoshop and lightroom for 11 Euro a month.   I've been in the cloud for the last 15 months, having previously owned Lightroom, but never the full version of photoshop.  At that time my demographic of no children, amateur and out of university meant no cheap photoshop deal for me to own the full version and therefore I was happy to commit to the cloud. The cost at that time was right at the limit I was willing to spend at 22 euro a month.

When the photography deal was announced a few months back for existing photoshop owners, I was slightly annoyed but again could understand Adobe positions. I would have happily settled for Lightroom to be included in my subscription at my existing price point of 22 euro.

Therefore to hear of the news that not only do I get Lightroom but also for a reduced monthly price of 11 euro was just incredible.

I would speculate that the reason for this is to try and get all the photography cloud subscribers onto essentially the same pricing point and subscription package.  This will be easier for them to manage when going forward particularly with any future price increases.

Still at this time, you can't complain (although there are always some who will!)___
