Justin Hill22,601114 HDR Photographers :- Here's my second circle share for the weekend. I have two circles for photographers and this is my second which concentrates on those that indulge in HDR photography. Some in this circle use the technique all the time and others only once in a while. Each and every one of them is a great photographer in their own right which is why I added them and created this circle carefully over time. You won't see much overblown HDR here, they are all very good at what they do and their images prove it. Once again this circle was put together by me and all within it were hand picked due to my likes and preferences. If I have left you out then I am sorry but I simply cannot put everyone I see in a circle so i have been deliberately selective.  Please feel free to add them all to your own circles or pick your way through and select just a few. By all means share if you so wish. Enjoy...2013-10-13 20:19:15114202CC G+
Georges Pauly14,521Thomas HawkShared publicly  -  30 Aug 2013 2500 Kick Ass Google+ Photographers (part 2 of 5)This is the fifth time I've shared my photographer's circle on Google+.  I'm going to share it in 5 posts.  Yesterday I shared last name A-Da.  This one , part 2 of 5, today, represents Da-Ho.  I'll share the remaining three next week.  I originally shared my photographers circle at 500, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 photographers.  I'll probably share it again eventually when it gets to 3,000.A few notes about this circle. The criteria that I look for (and don't always get right) in this circle is that the photographer produce interesting and engaging photography.  I also look for people who are active in the community, post mostly their own work, and post regularly.  I'm looking more for people who post their own work and less of the noise stuff (gifs, links, non-photography, promotions, etc.).  I also like people who are positive, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. and dislike people who are mean, snarky, jerks, disrespectful, etc.I have a pretty well known bias against signatures and watermarks.  You will see very few photographers in my circles who use them.  I really hate the watermark debate and would rather not have it with folks.  I just don't like them -- it's my circle that I have to look at.  There are likely a few folks in here who use them who are friends of mine, but for the most part, this is a pretty watermark free circle.  It's totally cool if you love your watermark, it's just not something I really want to look at.  Please don't hate me for my aesthetic preference.  Finally, the photography community on Google+ is probably the best one on the internet today.  There is no way that I can possibly include all of the fine photographers worth following on G+.  There are wayyyyy too many.  These are just 2,500 that I personally have noticed.  I'm sure I left out some really amazing ones -- like you if you are not in this circle :)  I'll probably also totally kick myself when I realize that I accidentally left out a really obvious good one who may even be a friend of mine -- again, maybe even like you.  :)Stay tuned for parts 3, 4 and 5 and thanks again to all of the great photographers on G+ who make this place such a delight to hang out.Part 1-5:  http://goo.gl/17ujpn*Note, Google Circles are terribly wonky.  It wouldn't let me add some photographers in my circle into these circles because of domain errors.  If this affected you, sorry about that.2013-09-01 19:56:06482204CC G+

Matt Shalvatis20,92250 (or so) Fantastic Photographers Friday#50FFF - Support your fellow photographers.  Please share! Here are 50 (or so) photographers who have posted something within the last week that has got my attention.  I gathered these from my stream, weekly photo themes, some photo communities, and random postings I stumbled upon.  Regular photography, HDR Photography, Paintography, and some other photos of interest. And that is my criteria for this circle.  They got my attention.  Well, OK, there is just a bit more.  • I checked their streams to make sure they’ve posted a few other photos in the last week.  But they don’t have to be all photos, all the time.• Made sure the best I could that the photos were their own. • Made sure they are lesser known photographers.  The well known ones don’t need more promotion. • Nothing unusually strange or bizarre in their streams.  If you’d like to be considered for the next weekly circle, post a comment below and share this circle.  This guarantees that I will look at your stream.  It does not guarantee inclusion in the next circle.  Get my attention, and you're included! This circle will be all new every week.   2013-02-01 17:50:0249022CC G+
Brunner Nathan1,086The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  There are NO requirements to share this circle.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.  Each profile has been verified by me.  Most have < 10,000 followers (when they were put into the circle).  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!  I have included myself in the circle and also the landscape page.  Some are new to G+ so please make them feel welcome!!Landscape Photography:  I invite everyone to check out the +Landscape Photography  #LandsacapePhotography theme.  If you want to impress me, that’s the place to do it!!  Post a great landscape that will get my attention.  See the About tab for all the details.I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!There’s a really great photographerr that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you!#Circleshare   #Sharedcircles2012-12-24 08:19:0850022323CC G+
Eileen O'Duffy11,884This is my Irish circle of friends. These people are either Irish or living and working in Ireland. They include a mixture of photographers, artists, writers, educators, technology, business people and more. Some don’t post very often, some only share limited to their circles. But they all have one thing in common: I know them, they are good people and genuine people and I always enjoy their posts. If I’ve left somebody out by mistake, please let me know. I’m so delighted to have met some of you through this Ireland community over the last week, I’d never have found you otherwise! 2012-12-20 23:22:44362215CC G+

Eileen O'Duffy8,684Guaranteed Irish Circle  #Ireland #GuaranteedIrish #SharedCirclesThis is my Irish circle. It includes artists, musicians, educators, technology people, business people, writers, historians photographers and much more. They all have one thing in common: they are Irish and either living in Ireland or Irish people living abroad. Some post limited i.e. share news of Irish interest only and some have drifted back to Twitter and I’m hoping to get them back here on G+ again. I’ve also included +Dirk Talamasca and given him honorary Irish citizenship as we manage the +Ireland  page together with  +Micheál Walsh. The +CircleCount  database is also useful if you are looking for Irish people http://www.circlecount.com/ie/popular/BTW I don’t normally share awesome/engaging/interactive circles as everybody I follow is awesome/engaging or I wouldn’t be following them in the first place! My circles are open, i.e. everybody I follow is public on my profile, not just a selected few VIP’s! Sláinte! 2012-09-02 20:16:01266633329CC G+

Essentially if I have to go back more than a screen on your profile before I hit original material, there is a good chance that I may drop you from the circles. Of course there will be mitigating factors...2012-07-03 10:31:18362524CC G+

The waterfall into the sea the main attraction in this section of the coastline, but there are plenty of tiny rocky inlets to play with.  Played with different exposure lengths and timings to get the patterns I was looking for.

Giro D'Italia

The first of this years cycling's grand tours, the three week long, 3449.9km Giro D'Italia, held its Grande Partenza in Belfast before rolling into Dublin in day three.  I caught the action on the Quays in Dublin, 2km from the finish, just as the Sky Pro Cycling (right), Cannondale Pro Cycling (middle) and Team Giant Shimano (left) got into formation for their lead out trains for the sprint finish.  The stage was won by Marcel Kittel of Team Giant Shimano to strengthen his lead and continue in the red jersey of points leader.

Michael Matthews of the Orica GreenEDGE team survived a crash during the stage to continue into Day 4 with the Maglia Rosa (Pink Jersey) as the leader of the general classification.

Heart of Stone

Back from a short absence from the google+ world after a hectic few months.  Not all bad though as part of the time was spent on another amazing workshop with the great +rohan reilly shooting the best of Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland on Rohan's Causeway Coast Workshop.

This was my very last frame of the trip taken in a cove next to the Giants Causeway.

Lots more to come from the workshop, but had to share this one today for #minimalmonday

I haven't shot many portraits or models so this was very much a venture into the new for me.  Shot on location at a workshop at the National Stud, Co Kildare, Ireland with my local camera club.

Please feel free to express any views or feedback.

We were working in small groups of 2s and 3s each with a model.  The other person I was working with was also of a similar experience, so we were slow getting started but soon got it to the swing of it.  I've read and attended workshops in the past, so I knew a bit but was lacking the hands on experience.  It started to rain so we dived inside the museum for 10 mins to let the shower past.  Inside, their was a small alcove with full height glass windows on both sides.  Despite the rain, there was just enough natural light coming in the windows to light the model, so I didn't use the speedlite I had with me.  In hindsight, Iprobabl... more »

Bull Island, Dublin, Ireland

Sunrise time, check, sunrise position, check, tidal times, check, ferry times .......
Not on my normal check list for a dawn shoot, but shooting outside of the main port in Dublin, I probably should have checked.  A very large ferry departed Dublin Port just as the sun was hitting the horizon, leaving the port and cutting behind the beacon in the background. Fortunately I was at longer focal length than I expected so I was able to compose the shot to avoid it.  On the plus side it created this nice little bow wave which stopped at the submerged breakwater leading all the way out to the beacon.

I purchased some Lightroom Presets from Craft and Vision recently and have started to play around with them.  I have both the sets from David duChemin and Dave Delnea and have found a couple of presets which work really well.  I particularly like the Milford Greens, the Golden Hour (both duChemin) and Custom Tones 001 through 004 (Delnea). The Golden Hour was used as a starting point for the shot below.

Isolation

First outing of the Christmas period yesterday due to the lousy weather. Headed up into the Wicklow Mountains at sunrise to the old miners village. Great views down the Glendasan River Valley to Laragh.  The early morning mountain mist was rolling off Brockagh Mountain to the left and Carnaderry to the right with just enough high clouds above it to reflect some of the light from the rising sun.  I was heading back up the valley to the car when I spied this lone tree on the ridge with the mist behind it.  Shot at 300mm on my Canon 100-400 and cropped to pano format.

My new +f-stop tilopa bag is packed and ready to go exploring (shown here with the large slope icu). All I need now is for the storm force winds and rain to pass and then I'm off into the Wicklow mountains for sunrise to take it through its paces.

Think I'll end up switching some of the smaller gear such as the remote and some filters to the top pocket. All the other pockets are empty at the moment - this bag will hold a lot of gear!

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Photo from a few weeks back at the beginning of the month. I wasn't planning on going out on the evening when this was shot, but when the sun started to dip in the sky I could tell from the light it had the chance of being a good one.  It was a case of grabbing the camera and running out the door.  Always useful to a selection of local favourite places for situations just like this.

What is your photography roadmap?

The new year is soon upon us which has had me thinking over the last few weeks about the direction that my photography going.  For me, this has mainly been about a camera body upgrade which I will get into, but what is your roadmap for the future?

This could be photography style, change of business, turning pro, gear or anything related.

What started me on this were thoughts behind upgrading my camera body.  I currently shoot a Canon 550d with a Sigma 17-70  f2.8-4 as a general workhorse including street and travel and then a Sigma 10-20 f3.5-5.6 for landscape work.  I have recently added the Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6 for tight landscapes and a bit of a wildlife/sport when the chance arises.

For 85% of my work, the 550d is a great camera and has served me well, however the limitations of the body mainly relate to low light performance and frame rate.  I would like better low light performance for my travel work when it is not always ideal to be carrying a tripod (although I do have a light travel tripod which I use). The better noise performance would also help by being able to bump up the ISO with the longer lens to give the necessary shutter speed for sharp shots at longer focal lengths.   I would also like a faster frame rate (currently 3.5 fps) and more focus points (currently 9).

This would lead me down the full frame route, but if I did this then I would also have to replace my wide angle and zoom lens as these are both crop factor lenses and things start getting very expensive fast even if I went for the 6D never mind the 5d MK III.

Mirrorless cameras could be an option, but for some reason I am not completely sold on this. There are some amazing mirrorless cameras about, but as with the full frame I would have to start again from scratch in terms of building up lenses etc.  That would mean I would either have sell all my existing gear or retain and carry about two different systems.

That leaves me with a new APS-C body. The 70d looks great with 19 focal points, 7 fps and good reports on low light performance. However, I am holding out for an upgrade to the 7d or a new equivalent.  The latest rumors on the spec from Canonrumors.com are 20 or 24MP, Auto-Focus system similar to the EOS 5D Mark III (61 points), 10-12fps, weather sealing , WiFi & GPS. Price is likely to be around $2000. This would tick all the boxes for me with the additional bonus of weather sealing , WiFi & GPS.  Fingers crossed this is announced in 2014! I am trying to save hard to fund this and they will fly off the shelves like hot cakes if it does happen.

Going the APS-C route would allow me to gradually replace my lenses over time, particularly the 17-70mm which I would replace with the new Sigma 24-105mm f4. My plan would also be to convert my 550d to infrared which would mean I could use my lenses with both cameras for maximum efficiencies.

What is your plan?___

The World Press Photo 13 Exhibition is currently on show in Dublin at The The CHQ Building, Dublin until 22 December.  The exhibition is showcasing 150 image shot by photographers from 33 countries. The preview photos on the website looking amazing so I think I may have to pay a visit to this exhibition before Christmas.

I'm done with apple's podcast app as it won't let me download any podcasts. It will stream then fine but can't download them to the phone. What is the best alternative app for podcasts, paid or free?

These truly are majestic creatures. Taken at Dublin Zoo thankfully behind the glass! Real shame that soon this will be the only place we will end up seeing them.

A trip to Dublin zoo on Sunday provided this shot of this magnificent sumatran tiger. The perfect model, she gave me a 100 yard stare straight down the barrel

The Old Clare Island Ferry

This wreck is actually the old Clare Island Ferry, Rossend, which was washed ashore on Clare Island, Co Mayo, Ireland in a storm of 1993. Split into two, only the bow remains as a stark reminder of the cruel nature of sea travel when Mother Nature decides to show her full force.  The shape of the vertical struts making up the bow combined with the port hole near the middle reminded me of a the throat of a humpback whale with the porthole forming the eye.

Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop Bundle

Lots of opinion on the creative cloud subscription model, but it hard to disagree with the latest offer for both photoshop and lightroom for 11 Euro a month.   I've been in the cloud for the last 15 months, having previously owned Lightroom, but never the full version of photoshop.  At that time my demographic of no children, amateur and out of university meant no cheap photoshop deal for me to own the full version and therefore I was happy to commit to the cloud. The cost at that time was right at the limit I was willing to spend at 22 euro a month.

When the photography deal was announced a few months back for existing photoshop owners, I was slightly annoyed but again could understand Adobe positions. I would have happily settled for Lightroom to be included in my subscription at my existing price point of 22 euro.

Therefore to hear of the news that not only do I get Lightroom but also for a reduced monthly price of 11 euro was just incredible.

I would speculate that the reason for this is to try and get all the photography cloud subscribers onto essentially the same pricing point and subscription package.  This will be easier for them to manage when going forward particularly with any future price increases.

Still at this time, you can't complain (although there are always some who will!)___

St Finan's Bay Pier, Co Kerry, ireland

Another shot from the recent coastal visions workshop down in Co Kerry.  This small pier is hidden in a little smugglers cove just around from Ballinskelligs Beach.  The water was this amazing cobalt blue colour, but in the end I went for the moody drama of a black and white.  For moodyness there is only one time of the week...

Derryclare Lough, Connemara, Ireland

Getting in some long exposure practice before the +rohan reilly and +Athena Carey Costal Vision workshop in County Kerry in October.  The scene has been photographed many times before, but it was on my bucket list of Irish landscapes so this my attempt.  The little causeway seems like it was made for photographic purposes acting as a perfect lead-in line to the island.  Go wide, get low and wait for that 2 minute exposure to elapse.

Shame about the power lines but then there is some software to take care of those!

Looking forward to road testing the public beta of Perfect Photo Suite 8 when it becomes available in October.

If it delivers as it looks like it could then goodbye to my creative cloud subscription. I could easy work with a work flow of Lightroom, Perfect Photo Suite 8 and a few other plug ins that I already own.

Having never owned a full version of photoshop the creative cloud was ok for me to get access to photoshop through the single app subscription but still a little pricey.

Fingers crossed!

'Black and White', Samuel Beckett Bridge, Dublin, Ireland

I posted one of these two images on google+ a few weeks back, but back then it was only half of an emerging concept.  The problem was that I was struggling with the white half of my black and white diptych. I couldn't get the photo  the way I wanted in photoshop and eventually I gave up.  I gave it another shot today but with a different photo and am really happy with the results.

Inspiration
On the back of Podcast 382 where Martin was talking about inspirations, I decided to check out the work of Sebastiao Salgado. As soon as I saw the cover of his latest book Genesis the credit card came out and the book was purchased.  The book arrived today and it is huge!!! I am only a tiny bit into the book and I am blown away by some of the images. There is no hyperbole when I say how incredible these images are.  I was just doing some further reading and noticed there is an exhibition of Genesis in the Waterhouse Gallery of the Natural History Museum in London.  Think I might be jumping on the short fight from Dublin to London....

You can see some of the photos here, but they need to be seen in print.

The Prince's Trust is a UK charity which provides practical and financial support including the development of workplace skills for 13-30 year olds who have struggled at school, been in care, are long term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law. My wife and I were lucky enough to be invited to the inaugural Prince's Trust Clay Pigeon Shoot which was held yesterday at Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire, Scotland. The event raised an incredible £120,000 for the charity. As a complete novice at clay pigeon shooting I felt I held my own in the amateur category but I am definitely better shooting with a camera rather than a shotgun. Shoulder a little tender today, but thought I would share some iPhone snaps of the day.

Updated my portfolios on my website over the weekend.  I was looking for a new wordpress theme and just could find one that ticked all the boxes especially with the galleries.  With all the hype about the new smugmug the last week I ended up giving a try and was hooked. Beautiful layouts and so simple to use.  My portfolio is now a sub-site of the main site which is not really what I wanted but the interlinkage between the two is ok. LInk to my portfolio site below.

Cheers,

Greig

Ballynafagh Ruins, Co Kildare, Ireland

After my recent shoot here last weekend I was updating my collection folders and I came across this shot from my very first visit to this location. I had favourite shot from this trip which is still probably one of my all time favourites so this shot never saw the light of day until now.  I had previously processed this shot, but decided to go back and redo the conversion to black and white using Silver Efex Pro.
