So I walked through my Circles and wanted to highlight, for you, 100 of my closest friends from Google+, whose posts I regularly enjoy, engage with, and many of whom reflect my offline relationships as well.No pages or brands are in this "Top 100". But you won't go wrong by adding this circle of sharp, engaging, humorous, clever and unique people. Thank you for being part of Google+. Didn't make this list? We're moving your data!

User experience is hugely important to us. As a global Internet company, we really care about speed and we're also fully committed to storing our users' data securely at all times.

In early 2014, we kicked off a massive internal effort to expand our server infrastructure globally in order to better serve Mi fans everywhere.

Our primary goal in moving to a multi-site server architecture was to improve the performance of our services for Mi fans around the world, cut down latency and reduce failure rates.  At the same time, it also better equips us to maintain high privacy standards and comply with local data protection regulations. This is a very high priority for Xiaomi as we expand into new markets over the next few years.

This server and data migration process is taking place in three phases.

Phase 1: E-commerce migration

Earlier this year, our e-commerce engineering teams started migrating our global e-commerce platforms and user data for all international users from our Beijing data centers to Amazon AWS data centers in California (USA) and Singapore.  We also began using Akamai's global CDN infrastructure to speed up static page loads.

This migration process will be completed by the end of October and will benefit users in all of our international markets — Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan.  Users are already experiencing website speed boosts of at least 30% in markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and as much as 200% in India.

Phase 2: MIUI services migration

We have also recently started migrating our MIUI services and corresponding data for all international users from our Beijing data centers to Amazon AWS data centers in Oregon (USA) and Singapore. This migration includes Mi Account, Cloud Messaging and Mi Cloud services.  We are expecting to complete this migration by the end of 2014, with some parts being completed even sooner (e.g. Mi Account servers by the end of October).

With this migration, we are expecting to cut network request latency for users in India by up to 350ms, and users in Malaysia to experience 2-3x faster Mi Cloud photosync.

Phase 3: Going local

In 2015, we are planning to take on a new challenge to further improve the performance of our services for users in large and fast-growing markets such as India and Brazil.

In these markets, where Amazon AWS services aren't yet available, we will be working with local data center providers to set up our service infrastructure.  Once that has been completed, users in these markets will be much closer to their data and enjoy even faster speeds by connecting to local servers.

We will continue to keep everyone posted!

"So far from being a copycat, Xiaomi presents a knotty disruptive challenge to the largest smartphone manufacturers. As it continues to expand in developing economies by marketing to the emerging middle class, it remains sheltered from the competition by its margins and the way it makes products profitable. Sooner rather than later, as it continues to propagate its new business model, this disruptive competitor is going to change how this industry works."

A quick update to India Mi fans using the Redmi 1S:

1) OTA UPDATE: Today we released an over-the-air system update (v45) for the Redmi 1S. This release incorporates feedback received from a large number of users and addresses a few important issues:

Issue #1: Heating & battery life

Many users in India tell us that their Redmi 1S gets very hot (sometimes above 45C), particularly in warmer areas of the country. We’ve improved our thermal control algorithm to better regulate temperature and keep it under 38C in normal usage conditions. In our internal tests as well as with our feedback group, we’ve found that these changes significantly reduce the device’s overall temperature while also improving battery life. We’re going to continue to optimize temperature control in future builds so please keep sending us your feedback.

Issue #2: RAM availability

Some users in India have pointed out that background apps are sometimes getting killed more aggressively than they would expect (for example, music player stopping while user is playing a 3D game).  We have looked at this closely and made a few significant improvements in how MIUI manages RAM on a 1GB device, which has resulted in noticeable improvements.

Issue #3: UI performance

We also received some feedback from users whose devices were suffering from performance issues such as frame rate drops and UI lag. These issues were particularly prevalent during computationally intensive tasks like gaming. The majority of these problems were a result of CPU throttling due to overheating and lack of RAM availability, which the fixes above have addressed.  We will continue to monitor user feedback in this particular area.

2) DEVICE SPECS: Many users had concerns that the Redmi 1S device specifications for the processor and battery were not correctly represented on Flipkart, Mi.com and the device itself. We wanted to clarify.

Processor specs

The Redmi 1S comes with a 1.6 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 MSM8228 as correctly noted on Mi.com and Flipkart but some 3rd party apps report a MSM8226. Typically, these apps get their information from the build.prop file inherited from the chipset driver, which represents itself as MSM8226 in both processors (MSM8228 is based on the original hardware and driver of the MSM8226). This is the reason why you see MSM8226 in apps such as CPU-Z even though the actual processor is indeed a MSM8228. This situation is also seen in other devices with the same chipset, such as the Xolo Q1100.

Battery

The Redmi 1S has a Lithium-ion Polymer (sometimes shortened to lithium polymer or li-poly) battery. While the spec on the battery label is correct, our product page on Mi.com incorrectly listed “Li-ion.” We have updated the website to reflect the correct battery specifications. Additionally, some 3rd party apps incorrectly reported a “Li-ion” battery, which was the result of a similar issue to the processor mismatch described above. In this case, we were able to find a simple fix and will be rolling that out in the next OTA. ___

Today is my first year anniversary living in Asia and being part of the Xiaomi team.

The last 12 months have been extraordinary – 10 months living in China, 2 months living in India. It's been a whirlwind journey that has flown by insanely quickly.

We've since added over 50 brilliant colleagues to our teams across China, Southeast Asia, India and Brazil. We're accelerating faster than ever and rising up to some of the biggest challenges any of us have ever experienced. It's scary and awesome.

MIUI Cloud Messaging & Privacy

Xiaomi is a mobile Internet company committed to providing high-quality products and easy-to-use Internet services. We believe it is our top priority to protect user data and privacy.  We do not upload or store private information or data without the permission of users.  This Q&A aims to address privacy concerns raised over the past 48 hours.

Q: What is MIUI Cloud Messaging?

A: Xiaomi offers a free service called Cloud Messaging as part of its MIUI operating system.  This service allows MIUI users to exchange text messages with each other free of SMS charges, by routing messages via IP instead of using the carrier’s SMS gateway.

Q: How does Cloud Messaging work?  Does it store any private user information?

A: When a Mi phone is turned on, the Cloud Messaging service is automatically activated through IP communication protocol with Xiaomi servers, in order to provide the user with the free text messaging capability.  MIUI Cloud Messaging uses SIM and device identifiers (phone number, IMSI and IMEI) for routing messages between two users, in the same way as some of the most popular messaging services.  Some technical implementation details are provided below.  Users’ phonebook contact data or social graph information (i.e. the mapping between contacts) are never stored on Cloud Messaging servers, and message content (in encrypted form) is not kept for longer than necessary to ensure immediate delivery to the receiver.

Q: How does this relate to the privacy concerns raised about Xiaomi over the last 48 hours?  What’s your response?

A: A recent article in Taiwan and a related report by F-Secure raised privacy concerns by stating that Xiaomi devices are sending phone numbers to Xiaomi’s servers.  These concerns refer to the MIUI Cloud Messaging service described above.  As we believe it is our top priority to protect user data and privacy, we have decided to make MIUI Cloud Messaging an opt-in service and no longer automatically activate users.  We have scheduled an OTA system update for today (Aug 10th) to implement this change.  After the upgrade, new users or users who factory reset their devices can enable the service by visiting “Settings > Mi Cloud > Cloud Messaging” from their home screen or “Settings > Cloud Messaging” inside the Messaging app — these are also the places where users can turn off Cloud Messaging.

We apologize for any concern caused to our users and Mi fans. We would also like to thank the media and users who have been sending us feedback and suggestions, allowing us to improve and provide better Internet services.

Q: How exactly does the MIUI Cloud Messaging system handle phone numbers?

A: For those interested in specific details about the MIUI Cloud Messaging implementation:

- The primary identifiers used to route messages are the sender and receiver’s phone numbers.  IMEI and IMSI information is also used to keep track of a device's online status.

- When a user sends a text message, if there is an Internet connection available, the Cloud Messaging system will attempt to route the message via IP.  If the receiver is offline (i.e. not immediately reachable via IP), the system falls back to sending a normal SMS message from the sender’s device.

- When a MIUI user opens a text message or a phonebook contact, or creates a new contact, the device connects to the Cloud Messaging servers, forwards the phone number of that contact and requests the online status of the corresponding user, which is indicated by a blue icon when that user is online or gray icon if that user is offline (or is not a Cloud Messaging user).  This allows the sender to immediately know whether they can text that user without incurring SMS costs.

- In any of these flows, the receiver’s phone number is only used to look up online status and to route messages.  No phonebook contact details or social graph information (i.e. the mapping between contacts) is stored on Cloud Messaging servers, and message content (in encrypted form) is not kept for longer than necessary to ensure immediate delivery to the receiver.

- The OTA system update made available today (Aug 10th) adds an extra layer of security by encrypting phone numbers whenever they are sent to Cloud Messaging servers.

- We will continue to make changes and improvements to this architecture as needed over time.___

Privacy

Q: Online articles recently referred to some privacy issues with the Redmi Note, claiming that photos and text messages are sent to China secretly. Are they true?

A: An article severely misinterpreted a discussion thread asking about the Redmi Note's communication with a server in China. The article also neglected to refer to a Chinese version of this Q&A already posted on the Xiaomi Hong Kong Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Xiaomihongkong/posts/799059896795602). Q: Does Xiaomi upload any personal data without my knowledge?

A: No. Xiaomi offers a service called Mi Cloud that enables users to back up and manage personal information in the cloud, as well as sync to other devices.  This includes contacts, notes, text messages and photos. Mi Cloud is turned off by default.  Users must log in with their Mi accounts and manually turn on Mi Cloud.  They also have the option to only turn on backup for certain types of data. The use and storage of data in Mi Cloud fully respects the local laws of each country and region.  Strict encryption algorithms are implemented to protect user privacy.

Q: Can I turn Mi Cloud off?

A: Yes. Just go to Settings > Mi Cloud to turn it off. If you would like to use a cloud back up service from another provider, there are options from Google, Dropbox and many others.

Q: Why should I believe you?

A: Xiaomi is serious about user privacy and takes all possible steps to ensure our Internet services adhere to our privacy policy. We do not upload any personal information and data without the permission of users. In a globalized economy, Chinese manufacturers' handsets are selling well internationally, and many international brands are similarly successful in China – any unlawful activity would be greatly detrimental to a company's global expansion efforts.___

Crowd-sourced goodness

MIUI — Xiaomi's Android-based OS — is built from the ground up with a lot of help from our fan community.

Here’s an awesome example: the Malaysia MIUI build was fully localized by a group of volunteers working on their spare time. Led by Imran Zakaria (big thanks to Mark Hedley for finding him!), the group went through many sleepless nights translating more than 50,000 strings over 2 months, racing against the clock before Xiaomi reached Malaysian shores.

We’re so thankful to them that we decided to burn their names permanently onto the MIUI ROM that ships on all devices in Malaysia — in Settings > About Phone (see image below).

If you'd like to help with future MIUI translation projects, come join us at http://translate.miui.com/.

Today we're celebrating the closing of an exciting half-year for Xiaomi.

In H1 2014, we shipped about 26 Million phones globally (3.7x H1 2013), with revenues of about USD 5.3 billion (2.5x H1 2013).

A huge thank-you to our loyal Mi Fans and partners — we couldn't have done this without you!

Ang ganda ng Pilipinas!

To celebrate our first Mi launch in the Philippines tomorrow, we've created a beautiful customized theme especially for our Pinoy fans, complete with even a Jeepney clock widget :)  Download it from the MIUI Themes Store and tell us what you think?
